The service was amazing! It does look like it's one guy working the front so give some grace with waiting. But we're not rushed diners so it was perfect for us. He was attentive to our toddler and made our meal easy. He caught on to what she wanted and had her preferences made earlier so she didn't have to wait. The food itself was also wonderful. The portions are good. We got the veggie combo (pumpkin, spinach, and eggplant) as well as a side of Sieb (apple). We also got muntoo and kebab gosfund. The meat was well done but not overcooked. It cut easily too! Everything was flavorful and the bread was delightful to scoop everything up with. We finished with the milk pudding which was a delightful dessert. He brought it out for our daughter and was again super sweet. The restaurant itself is relatively small - lots of tables and not too much walking room. There are long tables so it works for large parties as well. We went for an early dinner on a Monday so it was really quiet. I did see someone's walker in the restaurant but I wouldn't bring a stroller especially if it was busy. read more

Very carbohydrate heavy but very authentic Afghan food!. They start you out with bread and it comes out warm with little bits of sesame seeds on top. The aushack is like ravioli, but I didn't stand out to me. The Sambosa was crispy but minimal filling--still good taste wise. The zamarod palow has a very creamy, curry like sauce with lots of spinach and rice. The sauce makes it look like there is a lot of meat but there isn't. Really fragrant and delicious though! Some of the best Afghan food I've had, and I love Afghan food. We walked in when it was quiet and it looked like it was an attentive husband/wife team and our food seemed home cooked. Ambiance wasn't fancy but was homey and cozy. Really nice portions and plenty of veg options. The seasoned rice options were lovely and my husband really enjoyed his tea. Appetizer was OK but the mains were superb and we were so full we couldn't finish. I got the seib, which was a main dish that primarily featured apples. I hadn't seen that before and I was skeptical before eating but wanted to try something different and it was incredible. My only pro tip is that when you order a veg main it's a lot of one thing, whereas meat mains come with a veg. Next time I will order the veggie combo option to get more diversity. Just terrific! As the website states, it very much is authentic Afghan food. The owner actually helped us decide what to order and delivered the food to us himself. He was so pleasant and kind and the restaurant had such a homey atmosphere to it. We had the aushack, salmon kebab, one of the chicken dishes, and ended our dinner with cardamom and rose ice cream. Fabulous Afghani. The quabli palow features tender lamb, saffron rice with carrots, raisins Samaaroq, and almonds. The sauce is tomato based. Our Samaaroq palow has chunks of chicken in a yogurt sour cream sauce tgat was different from the quabli. Tender chicken and another excellent sauce. It can with a side of flat bread. I've never had a home-cooked Afghan meal, but I feel like what you get at Zamarod is what you would expect from a great home-cooked meal. While I am a meat lover, one of the best things about the food at Zamarod is the vegetables. Pumpkin, eggplant, turnips are just some of the veg that you may not see on most menus...but are cooked in such a flavorful manner at Zamarod. There are many Afghan restaurants in the DC area, however many of them are Afghan just by name, i.e. - serving a very limited of Afghan food, mainly kebobs. Zamarod stands out to the contrary: the variety and flavors are totally unique and delicious. We opted for two entrees - Kadu Palow, Combo Kebob, and and a side - Banjan instead of an appetizer - turned out to be a very good choice. The Kadu Palow - Sautéed Pumpkin with chunks of lamb in tomato sauce on a layer of spinach rice and yogurt: the chunks of lamb melted in the mouth, and the accompanying ingredients joined to a symphony of really unique flavors like we haven't experienced before. The Combo Kabob consisted of grilled chicken, leg of lamb, and lamb chops, all grilled to perfection, soft and tasty on a bed of basmati rice with sumac. Along with the side of sautéed eggplant with Yogurt and tomato sauce we were treated to a bounty of delicious meal, that rendered us incapacitated by the end. Yet we couldn't resist trying the cardamom tea and a baklava (large, one was enough to share between us). Serving portions are very generous, prices are reasonable for this kind of a restaurant, presentation is delightful, and if you show respect to the owner (and patience waiting for the food) you will be rewarded with a hearty smile, as we received in our visits there. When it's rainy and cloudy in DC, we like to take the car and head over to a cozy dinner at Zamarod for some authentic Afghan food. I'm not half the carnivore that others in my family are, but I do not complain about the meat here -- it's all tender, fall-off-the-bone, not-a-hint-of-fat delicious. Some of my favorites include: -bulanee kachalu (pastry stuffed with potatoes and herbs -- a starter that's great for sharing) -aushack & muntoo (you MUST get one of these dumpling options -- they will whet the palate and get you ready for more deliciousness to come) -any of the meat palows (we usually get one chicken and one lamb -- the rice with carrots, raisins, and almonds is something else, a must-try) -the kebob combo (I rarely rarely crave kebob, but I definitely crave the ones at Zamarod -- the lamb is super high-quality without any fat or greasy aftertaste, the chicken is tender, tender (no dry breast here), and the beef is so flavorful. In addition to the above carnivore options, there are lots of delicious, flavorful vegetarian options -- the eggplant is to die for, and the pumpkin and spinach dishes really leverage and highlight the veggies used. Vegetarians won't starve here. Also, the BREAD is SO good. Wish we could order it in bulk. For dessert, definitely get the firnee (cardamom, rose water, pistachio pudding -- if that doesn't sound heavenly, then I don't know what does) which is so refreshing and worth it even if you already consumed all of the above. One of the best parts of the restaurant is the kind owner (he also takes the orders and serves you himself and always has great recommendations about what to get) who makes you feel like you're eating in his home.
