Came here for Mother's Day and waited 45 minutes which wasn't terrible. I had the bbq chicken bowl which was good but in my opinion could have had a little more sauce. We came with my niece and nephew and there isn't a kids menu, but they were able to share some sliders. Our server was amazing and the inside is cute for families. Just okay. I went on a Saturday afternoon for brunch. I ordered a hummus wrap with sweet potato fries. They had several vegetarian options which was nice. The meal was okay. We sat in the back near the exit to the terrace and it was extremely hot. Not sure if ac wasn't working. Granted, it was hot that day but it was a nicer temperature on the terrace than it was inside. The waitress was kind, however they messed up my friends order. No big deal but she did have to wait quite a while for it. We went for brunch and had a great experience. Hidden gem in Bonsall for sure! This was my second time dining here and can't wait to come back. I ordered the chicken and waffles & wow... the picture I took doesn't do it justice. Everyone at my table loved their own meal, but definitely wished they ordered mine! We checked out this place as we were considering in ordering from this location for catering/breakfast order. Parking was at the top of the hill, and we got lucky with a spot. This place does get quite the busy crowd as we dropped in on a weeknight, and there was quite a line. We ended up being seated quicker as we didn't mind the option of being seated outdoors, and we were only a party of 2. We shared: TRUFFLE PARMESAN FRIES | Herbs, parmesan cheese, white truffle oil, garlic aioli. This was our appetizer as I was hungry and we assumed this would come out quick. It was pretty good and decent. HAWAIIAN PLATE | BBQ Beef, brown or white rice, mixed green salad with sesame ginger dressing, tuna macaroni salad, topped with a teriyaki glaze or katsu sauce on the side. We were definite fans of this one. My favorite thing on this plate was the tuna macaroni salad. I'm usually pretty picky on macaroni salad, but theres made all the difference. While we sat outside it did start to get a bit chilly. One of the ladies working there had tried to refill the heat lamp's gas, but it was one of her colleagues that looked behind us and changed it out. Before long, it was nice level of warmth. I did ask about their catering options while I was there. They let me know due to their limited kitchen space they weren't able to fulfill huge orders especially during prime time (like 11:00AM-12:30PM). They were more keen on fulfilling orders after 1:00 PM, as prime time was pretty uncertain. I hope they will get to expand as I think Z's Cafe has so much potential to add more value to their business if they have the space/workers to support the catering orders. Also hope they will work on their online menu site. It's quite difficult to navigate online when placing an order, and you can't place lunch orders until after 11:00 AM I believe. So tbh, I wasn't expecting much because this place was fairly hidden to me and I had just moved to Fallbrook so I'm finding my footing. I was super surprised by this place because the food was an eclectic mix of Hawaiian-ish fusion? As someone who's born and raised from the 808, finding local food is always a struggle but this was pretty good! I wasn't a fan of the onions in my Portuguese sausage but I'm sure someone else does. It was tasty with the white rice and just what the doctor ordered. My friend got the veggie omelette and she was about it bout it. The biscuits and gravy were not my thing, it almost tasted like a butter base instead of fat from the bacon or sausage so it threw me a bit. My friends and I love this place for happy hour and dinner. They have a HUGE variety of food that literally anyone can find something to eat! I just wanted to say that it's been 6 years since I first tried this restaurant and it still deserves 5 stars! I have never been disappointed and everything I've ever tried has been delicious. Yesterday I made it for breakfast for the first time in 6 years so that was exciting! I had to get the loco moco with over easy eggs and it was EXCELLENT! And under $10 for that I can't believe it. My boyfriend got chicken fried steak which comes with a biscuit and gravy on top of it! He said it was the best he's ever had. This place is probably my favorite restaurant all around. They have great happy hour and early bird specials which are unbeatable. I love their sushi! I always get 2 hand rolls for $5 on happy hour. Also Wednesday is buy one get one free burgers!!! Every one of the staff that we came in contact with on our visit was wonderful...friendly, engaging and helpful. I was there with a friend but was really happy after looking at the menu, that I knew I could come back with my picky husband. My friend orders Brussels sprouts appetizers wherever we go, and I think these Sriracha teriyaki ones were the best I ever had. I love that a half sandwich is an option, especially when I can have it with onion rings, portions are just too big and I hate wasting food. Decent food but management is socially and professionally inept. People come here because it's the only place in town (basically) in rural Fallbrook/Bonsall area. The wait staff all are high school aged and do not have any concept of time, space, management, or problem solving. Tourists or visitors: DO NOT COME HERE. You will be treated like garbage, the wait time will Be extraordinary, the dishes simple and jejune. If you make a simple request, like silverware or extra napkins, you will be greeting with the wide eyes of a 16 year old who looks at you as if they don't speak English. It's easy to see why Z Cafe is popular: it is an inviting open restaurant with a bar and large patio; the service is pretty friendly; and, for the cost conscious, the prices are considerably more reasonable than what you might find elsewhere in coastal California. The fact, too, that there are many breakfast and lunch offerings combined with ample portions makes this place a natural fave for many. But once you get a closer look under the hood, its many virtues seem less impressive. To begin, many of the plates offered are starch heavy and item light. The omelet offerings, for example, come with ample hash browns and toast, but the actual eggs themselves are somewhat on the thin side. Second and more serious is what is actually being served. The owners seem to be working on the "quantity = quality" theory of food service. This is something that was ubiquitous in San Diego County 20 years ago, a practice that has for the most part been thankfully abandoned. While ample amounts arrive on your plate or in your coffee cup (including offers to freshen espresso drinks with brewed coffee!), the actual quality is mediocre. Especially in the matter of fresh produce, they border on spoiled--limp lettuce, badly browned and spotted avocados, etc. Meats are thoroughly cooked through, which naturally raises questions about their freshness as well. Even the hash browns feel pre-made. In toto, a lot of so-so food does not make it good or even a good deal. Lastly is the service. To a degree, this is not the waitstaff's fault. The place gets busy, especially on weekends where waits for a table can be long. So it is unsurprising that there is a certain degree of slowness and disorganization, but it seems a bit worse than it should be. My guess is that this is a management problem--either they do not have not enough waiters and waitresses available or they are not being directed well (I suspect it is the former, but I don't know). Don't get me wrong. There is nothing intrinsically wrong with Z Cafe.But there is nothing special or remarkable about it, either. This is cafeteria-quality food gussied up and set in pleasant surroundings. read more

First of all I called to place a to-go order and was on hold for 5+ minutes... then i got hung up on. Second of all when we came in to pick up our order we had to wait a few minutes (which was fine) so we sat at a near by table to wait. We were approached by one of the staff members who had terrible attitude and told us we couldn't sit where we were and didn't redirect us to somewhere that we couldn't sit where wait. Back again. Lunch time high noon on a Friday. A 30 minute wait. Didn't seem that long. Huge and very tasty lunch plates. The Hawaiian chicken plate was predictably teriyaki. The, I think, macaroni potato salad was pretty good. Didn't try the regular Hawaiian salad that came with the plate. We also had the good Philly Cheesesteak with great sweet potato fries and side of some pretty excellent onion rings. The ranch dressing stayed where it belongs after dipping and was tasty too. The place and staff always seem to be pleasant and the food was served impressively lunch-break quick. I think it's pretty obvious this place is getting our attention. We didn't see sushi on the menu anymore. Perhaps it's only a dinner thing. I didn't ask. Still a bargain at less than $40 for two lunches and a couple of ice tea. It appears there is the trending 3% surcharge I had yet to discover indicated on their menu or website. Obviously a seasoned local crowd as the sport games were on the multiple TVs in the bar area. Friend ordered the Ahi Tuna Tower and I tried the Steak Stroganoff, which was more like a Penne Alfredo with tiny pieces of Steak -- after the 6th or 8th bite of steak and having to take grissel out of my mouth, I gave up on the meal. Embarrassed to make a big deal out of it and ruin the meal for my friend, I chose to call the restaurant with my complaint the following day. I told the Manager about my let down AND that our meals were served 20 minutes apart...all I got from the Manager was I should have said something while I was in the restaurant during the meal and they could have corrected the problem. Rejecting my plate would only further ruin both of our dinners. Recommend: don't order the Stroganoff -- very disappointing on the 'steak' !! read more

Seriously though, if you look at my picture you'll see my dinner was $4 wine and $5 for the Kalua pork sliders (note they usually come with Cole slaw but I don't do cole slaw). $9 bucks for my dinner last night (ok who we kidding I had more than one glass of that $4 wine lol).
