We decided to go to Yama for our anniversary dinner. We ordered edamame to start and then a No Name roll, Forest Gump roll and a Tekka Don sushimi bowl that came with miso soup. My husband loved the sushimi bowl but I wasn't as crazy about it as he was. Way too much rice for me! The soup was nothing special either. They did give a nice portion of fish. The No Name roll was my favorite. It was a very tasty roll piled high with stuff! We actually ordered a Volcano which we have had before but they accidentally brought us the Forest Gump roll. It was a roll I normally wouldn't have ordered because it is topped with jalapeño. I just took the pepper off and I really enjoyed the roll. It was served with a side of onion straws that I of course completely finished! I thought the edamame was just ok. I will skip that in the future. read more

Woo hoo, I'm home and today my hubby and I cleaned out our garage. We were pretty hungry after a day of hard labor...Lolol. I wanted everything tonight, so I chose 2 salmon skin rolls from Yama. They were big rolls and full of salmon skin, veggies and sticky rice. The owner is always there and greets you warmly upon coming in to the restaurant. This gem is in a strip mall in Fallbrook. We went at 7pm so there were some parking spaces near the restaurant. If you want fresh sushi, this is the spot. Now let's head over to another restaurant along the same strip mall that my husband loves. Yama has an extensive menu. Noodles, udon, katsu, rolls of every type and sashimi. Japanese owned Japanese restaurant! Staff here is phenomenal! Everyone is so nice, personable and attentive. Sitting there we can tell there's a lot of regulars here. They have a VIP card system that we just jumped on board with. You can watch the sushi chefs working hard making all the different sushi's. We ordered mix tempura, tekka maki, and 2 specialty rolls. Tempura was crunchy just how I like it! Tekka maki was rolled perfectly. Some places do such a sloppy job when they cut it and the rice is usually falling out. Not here! All the waiters and the waitresses are so super attentive to all the guests needs. All of them are very knowledgeable and willing to assist. Very busy busy place with all the tables taken, to go orders being ordered and online orders coming through. They all still manage to keep their cool and keep on chugging along. Love the ambiance! Do not go there! I have been an avid customer for years and today I had a horrible experience. I had one more bite of sushi roll left on my plate and I saw something green moving on the edge of it, I turn my plate and saw a green ctapillar type of insect crawling on it. I immediately handed my plate to the sushi chef and he quickly swipes my plate from me, take the insect into his palm and tosses it on the floor. He said "it's lettuce and moves like that". I argued with him that it's not lettuce and it's an insect and he kept denying it. I talked to the owner and told him about this and about how the chef lied and he pats me on the back and said sorry. I walked towards the door and said I'll never be back here and he said wait, your next order on me. I said I'll never be back. He never offered to credit me since I already paid for the food. So disgusted l, this shows they don't clean their produce and makes you wonder how fresh and clean the fish is. read more

Ordered a lobster bake to go, which is not far from therestaurant and my lobster bake was cold and the crawfish was watery and bland. It tasted like they just defrosted the crawfish and threw it on top of California rolls. There was hardly any masago on it. It was not worth the $30 for the order. My my and I have been coming here for about 3 years. We usually sit at the sushi bar. I like the Charger roll and she likes the Tiger roll. The ones we have had are always delicious. The owner Steve is a good, hardworking guy and takes pride his food. Always consistent flavors and fresh. I ordered the Chirashi don and my better half ordered the beef teriyaki and California roll lunch combo. My wife luvs California roll and gives her stamp of approval. My Chirashi don was above average. The tamago, tuna, snapper, mackerel, faux krab and sushi rice were good. But, the salmon reigned supreme! If I could, I'd order this Chirashi don with only the salmon. If you want to have a "Melt in your mouth experience" then order the salmon. We were excited to try this local place as the reviews looked promising, but we were very disappointed. The food lacked flavor to the point where my 9 year old even told me she couldn't taste anything in her food. She had a Fried rice bowl with beef. We got two sushi rolls, both the fish were warm and I got a sushi burrito which was just only spicy tuna inside. When I sent it back because the fish was warm and did not taste good, the owner felt that he should only take 20% off of the item instead of fully removing it from the bill. I have NEVER experienced this. On top of that our server was non existent so that did not help either. Not sure where she was as this is a super small establishment. Lackluster sushi, and they're not at all consistent. If you order a roll you like and then go back to get it again in the future, it wont taste or look the same. Went for happy hour today, which is advertised as 230pm - 450pm. Sat down at our table at 220pm and noticed a sign saying that happy hour only applied to food ordered AFTER 230pm. We asked the waitress what was on happy hour and she let us know, we said ok, we'll wait. We ordered our food at 238pm. When the waitress brought the bill, nothing was discounted, and she was immediately offering an excuse as to why it wasn't discounted. She said it was because we sat down and ordered a drink at 220pm, keep in mind we ASKED about happy hour several times before ordering, so she knew why we were there. When we let her know that we weren't happy about the communication or the so called "policy", she left us sitting for a while and went to the back. She came back about 10 mins later and told us that her boss said he won't discount it. I told her I'd like to speak to him. The owner came out and told us that since we sat down and ordered a drink at 220pm that meant we weren't eligible for happy hour. If that's the policy, fine. I think it's silly, but ok....All the waitress had to do was let us know we wouldn't be eligible for happy hour and we would have left and came back or just left period. Instead, the owner was determined to get his $100 from us and refused to honor the happy hour discount that is clearly printed on the wall next to where we were sitting. Don't offer a happy hour if you don't plan on honoring it. Also, maybe train your staff better so they can let customers know if they will or won't be eligible for happy hour. It shouldn't be that hard. We'll gladly drive to Oside or Vista for a better experience from now on.... read more

Don't let the modest and unassuming decor and dining room fool you. The quality of the food was excellent! I mean excellent! They serve fresh, delicious and large portions. The two waitresses who waited on us were friendly and timely. Yama Sushi has a clean atmosphere. It was my mom's birthday and they even offered a complimentary dish of green tea ice cream in a cute margarita glass with a birthday candle. It wasn't a cheap little scoop either.
