Items Selected: Toasted Sesame Bagel with Cream Cheese Toasted Blueberry Bagel with Blueberry Cream Cheese Peanut Butter Cookie Oatmeal Raisin Cookie Chocolate Chip Cookie Challah Bread Pudding with Rum Sauce Carrot Cake Cookie Sandwich Located in Norfolk's historic Ghent district and owned by Greg Peterman since 2006, Yorgo's Bageldashery is considered by many to be the best Bagel Shop in all of Virginia and although it was indeed the only bagel shop visited during a prolonged stay in the state of my birth I can attest that the bagels were indeed quite excellent, as was nearly everything else sampled as part of Valentine's Day breakfast following a redeye out of Las Vegas. Small in size and friendly in service, the sort of place where even first timers are likely to be welcomed like old friends, ordering at Yorgo's follows a grab-and-go or counter-side order format and with several items available at each the most onerous part of the process is deciding which items sound best, a "bakers' half-dozen" providing plenty of carbs for our party of two...and likely several more. Beginning first with the restaurant's signature item, suffice it to say that each hand crafted and housemade ring proves a substantial upgrade on the doughy pseudo-desserts at Panera or the flavorless prefabrications at Einstein or Great American and with several house-blended schmears only serving to upgrade the crunchy exterior overlying a soft, stretchy core the best bet is to simply follow one's gut - the sesame seed iteration eggy and pronouncedly nutty while the blueberry bagel was only lightly sweetened by fresh berries, the berry-imbued cream cheese slightly less subtle with the combination conveying a lovely balance of savory and sweet. Moving from breakfast to things trending far closer to dessert it was perhaps an effect of the early hour and questionable 'day-old' status that saw a carrot cake sandwich cookie trend far too soggy to be properly enjoyed but moving onward to three other cookies, all confirmed as fresh baked, one would be hard pressed to decide which of the trio was best but at only $1.80 each one would be best advised to explore the options for themselves, though certainly not at the expense of the house-made Challah Bread Pudding - a rich, eggy block, heated to order, and doused with boozy caramel sauce that proved to be not only the highlight of the meal but also one of the best deli-style bread puddings experienced to date. read more

It's as if a giant plucked a bagel shop from a street corner in Manhattan, and placed it here in Ghent. Great tasting Jewish-style bagels, not the airier Greek bagels are the standouts. Just like what I remember from NYC, these bad boys are maxed out with cream cheese! Although the nova with cream cheese is a good one to try, my all time fave is a toasted sesame with scallion cream cheese. Don't forget the "cawfee" with "extra, extra." Thanks, giant! This place is legit yo! For seriously. Outside of NYC I have yet to get a bagel this perfect! Actually .. The bagel I just had blows the two bagels I had on my last visit to NYC out of the water! Firstly the everything bagel was coated in everything goodness on the top AND the bottom. Secondly the scallion cream cheese was plentiful. Which is what I love about bagels from NYC. And lastly they toasted my bagel, per request. The last time I ordered a toasted bagel I was in NYC and they forgot to toast it. Highly disappointing. Anywho. This place rocks. I got to say, this place was pretty good! I'm used to my bagels from up North but this will do since I no longer live in the NY/NJ area. I walked into the place with no line and ordered with no hesitation, of course, I got the Everything Bagel with Plain Cream change. This place has some amazing vegan options. We went and tried the vegan buffalo chicken, vegan philly cheesesteak and vegan bbq chicken. The herb Vegenaise they use on the buffalo chicken is delicious, but the barbecue chicken is the most delicious sandwich ever. I'm vegan, and they have so many delicious vegan options, but my favorite is definitely the vegan bacon egg and cheese on a bagel, it's the tastiest thing I've ever put in my mouth. I travelled to this establishment based on the reviews. Bagel was decent; Cream cheese was smooth and flavorful; Service was offensive. It was my first visit to the establishment and the employee who rang up my order was exceptionally terse and irritable; the individual rushed the order ("is that all?" Multiple times) resulting in receipt of an incorrect (simple) order. In most cases I make a minimum of 2 visits before deciding on whether or not I will continue patronage; this instance was so disconcerting I will assuredly not be returning. read more

This is generally my go to quick breakfast or lunch option in Norfolk. For less than I would spend at Panera, you get a much better meal. While I think the bagels are always very good, I have had better. But, they do a great job of putting together great flavors and quality ingredients to make some really tasty lunch and breakfast sandwiches. I usually go with "the grinder", "so cal" or the deli egg depending on my mood, and they have never once let me down. In short, this is a great fast casual option at a good price point! read more

They may not sound appetizing to some but , I live off them, their cream cheese bagels melt in your mouth it's nice inside I'd love to have a full on breakfast one day if I wake up early enough! LOVE Yorgo's, hate that they close at 3pm! This was a regular breakfast/lunch spot for my coworkers and I, especially since we were right down the block and could walk over. The seasonal cream cheeses have been good (I like the pumpkin!) as well as the lox spread. The lox sandwich is also top notch. As for the breakfast sandwiches the cheese is melty and they bacon is woven together (like a lattice top pie) so you get some in every bite and you don't accidentally pull the whole little piece out at once, like at some other places. Yum! Everything is awesome. We go almost weekly to get our bagel fix. Lots of options for every palate and diet/lifestyle. I always get the everything bagel because it is top notch. It's a little gem in the Ghent/Norfolk community, serving up delicious bagels (every kind you can think of) with tons of cream cheese options (Heeellooo, Honey Pecan!). My love affair for Yorgo's started as a Saturday morning ritual for Crossfit757 athletes after a grueling workout. We all head down there, you can't miss us because we usually take up several tables and maybe stink a little ;) From Vegan options, fresh bagels, or delicious breakfast wraps with his famous chorizo, there's endless choices! Fresh salads, fruit bowls and tasty fresh baked goods such as brownies or breakfast bars are also available in the fridge by the registers. Coffee is always brewed fresh and never tastes like the 7-eleven oil that has been burning for 4 hours. If you're on a date and want to show him/her your hipster foodie side, take them to Yorgo's. Want to enjoy your morning newspaper with a bagel and coffee? go to Yorgo's. Have a big group of friends that want a delicious lunch together? ...you get the point. This combo is just one of the many you can do from their selection of delicious bagels! Though I don't tend to vary my order, those I've breakfasted with at Yorgo's have and have loved everything they got! I had the Deli egg on a jalapeño bagel. The egg omelet was delicious, plenty of meat and cheese. So yummy! The taste of the bagel was really good. I loved the little bit of heat from the jalapeños. I want to come back and get some of their sweeter bagels and try with cream cheese. The only thing I had to complain about was they didn't toast the bagel to my liking. It is a personal preference so I won't knock the stars too far down. I had to remove the top part of my bagel sandwich because it was too chewy and I could eat the sandwich together. The two best sandwiches I've ever had were at Yorgo's. Its difficult to find good vegan food that is worth the price, but Yorgo's fits the bill. Messy good food, that's filling, but not at all one note. An excellent blend of consistency and variety. Sadly, I'm moving out of state and theres only one Yorgo's in existence. When I come back to Virginia, I'll have to visit Yorgo's each time. On top of amazing food, the service is super friendly, the wait is pretty short even when they're busy, and the atmosphere is friendly and hip without being alienating to anyone. For my fellow vegans, I highly recommend the vegan breakfast sandwiches (I always add vegan cream cheese) and the vegan Philly Cheesesteak, both of which go great on onion or garlic bagels.
