Tried this place on a recommendation. It was amazing. I had the teriyaki chicken bowl and an egg roll. The regular size was more than filling. The chicken was perfectly cooked and seasoned. The egg roll was tasteful and crunchy. As soon as we walked in we were greeted and our order was taken. Within 10 mins our food was in front of us. The restaurant is a small one but maximized seating area is a plus. Not a noisy restaurant by any means. I'll definitely be back to try the other dishes

This place has been here forever. I remember coming here in high-school and they are still busy. So that's a good sign. Loved how they updated their menu board and even the combo deals. Would say their chicken stir fry was a little too saucy and not enough rice, but I shouldn't complain as most restaurants now cut back on proteins. Always a favorite, I'd highly recommend adding this favorite to your routine takeout.

I've been going here for like 15 years the previous owners were so friendly. They sold it and some recipes stayed the same others changed in flavor but overall it's still good.

The atmosphere itself is very casual and makes me feel at home. The place is also very clean and well organized. Main dishes are comprised of rice bowls or yakisoba (a type of stir fried noodles from Japan), with some type of meat (chicken, beef, or shrimp) that are prepared in many different ways (curry, katsu (deep fried), teriyaki, orange, lemon, etc.) Personally, I've always ordered the number #1 large teriyaki chicken with light sauce. Today, I've also decided to grab a side dish in crab angels and they were delicious as expected. The people here really strive to give you the best customer service along with great food. Trust me when I tell you that they are very generous in trying to feed you. Just look at the size of the bowl I got! This place makes everything fresh so the wait can be a little long but it is very much worth the wait. One piece of advice I will give is that you should order ahead on the phone so when you get there, the food will be ready! I highly recommend this place to anyone who is looking for great Japanese food!

I've past by here quite a bit during my college days and didn't really know about this place. Well back in the area for a while and wanted to see what kind of places people were recommending in the area. Ive been to Japan lived there, been all over asian. I'll tell you this, it is NOT japanese food at all. They may have 1 or 2 items (yakisoba) that you may find in Japan or Japanese restaurants but these are more American style "asian" fast food more toward Chinese style. Got a combo C to try a few things at this sitting. House chicken is basically chopped up grilled chicken in a "chop suey" style stir fry with cabbage slivers of cabbage mushroom and broccoli. Tossed in a heavy soy type sauce. Imo was very salty and didn't finish it. I do not like wasting food and try to take things home etc but actually left the rest behind. 2nd item in the combo is Kaum Poong Kee. I've never heard of this dish before so really wanted to try this. Thick heavy tempura style batter chicken tossed in a sweet slightly spicy soy sauce. It was very heavy and the sauce was too much for me. I left a few pieces behind as well. Was super crunchy and freshly fried however. Overall was just too much salt for me. Maybe a simple teri chicken bowl would be better options here. If this is what you been going to for years more power to you and thank you for supporting small businesses but not for me sorry.

Some genuine Asian food, quality and great size portions. The combo was all this with a drink for $15

Started working in the area and I'm super strict with my diet so whenever I need something healthy and pretty cheap I always get their chicken teriyaki bowl. It's always consistent, ready in 10 minutes, and tons of protein with rice. The lady is always very friendly in the front as well. Would definitely recommend

We love this place. I have been coming here since they opened in 1993 when I worked next door. I would eat here at least once or twice a week to try their different plates. Our go to plate is #12 Kaum Poong Kee the hot & sweet garlic sauce over the twice cooked chicken is so tasty, making you want more. My 2nd favorite is #7 Sweet & Sour Chicken, the sweet & sour sauce is not too sweet, & the perfect portion of sauce poured over fresh vegies and chicken. They offer two bowl sizes regular & large, and the prices are reasonable for the amount of food portions. If you get a regular bowl after tasting their dishes you will wish you got a large. We were so sad when we moved out of state a few years ago as we missed our weekly favorite Yoko's Fast food. Now when we come into town each year this is our first and last stop for our visit so we get our fill. The owner Alex is super friendly & always comes out to say hi. Sincerely your Sactown friends

Always a lot of people there so it makes you want to be there. Restaurant wise they have really basic offerings. Places you can find in Mesa, and Tempe, and Scottsdale. Now.... What truly makes Downtown Gilbert special are the small shops that are hidden away from the "main strip". One of those places is Clever Koi. Hidden in the Parking lot space behind Shaq's Chicken spot is a small strip of shops. A book store, smoothie place, and my favorite Clever Koi. Our family has very different tastes when we move from one member to the next. So finding places that we all like gets tricky. Clever Koi makes that easy because we honestly have yet to run into something we don't like. Let's start with our favorite starter. The steamed buns (giggity). The pork belly is hands down phenomenal. An amazing bite that literally makes you want more and more. The lazy fries are just that, again pork belly is included, but that garlic aioli is what drives this dish. The tai salad is obviously classic. The short rib dumplings literally make you close your eyes and just say "Mmmmmm". My middle child is the hardest pallet to please at any restaurant as he only eats certain things, but the Chicken Katsu sandwich here is his second favorite chicken sandwich in all this world. The first time he ate it he spent the whole ride home raving about it. Mind you, we live in San Tan, so not a short ride. The shaking beef is always good. It has this firey kick that brings the heat upfront but does not linger. You cannot forget about the fried rice here. Rice is one of my weaknesses in life second only to pizza. Fried rice ranks right up there with my top favorite ways to eat rice and this ranks right up there with my favorite fried rice places. The main reason we come here is because of the noodles. Ramen, ramen, ramen. When you think of Ramen, I assure you this is what you are thinking of. The broth is oh so savory and reigns in the fresh veggies and proteins to meld them with the noodles for a flavor punch each time you have a mouthful. They have great drinks here as well, or so I've been told by the other adults I come here with. I always just get a sake and Sapporo so... LOL The service is always good here and we somehow always manage to miss the lunch or dinner rush which is awesome. All in all... this is by far my favorite dining spot in downtown Gilbert. Great food, great drinks, great service, great atmosphere, in the middle of a great little square. A must eat for me.

Our server Maya was incredible and extremely knowledgeable on all dishes, drinks, and so many details of the restaurant! I've never had this good of service anywhere! My wife and I had the Pad See Ew with the braised chicken thigh which was INCREDIBLE. Perfectly chewy noodles, great seasoning. I highly recommend adding some of the homemade Fresno chile sriracha for a kick! The pork ramen was also very delicious. Be warned it's a lot of pork! My wife preferred it with the green jalapeño sriracha. The drinks were also very unique and delicious! A sideline view for me and riding the line for my wife. Oh and the best part was the dessert Bananas foster hush puppy puffs. These were so unique, seasoned with cinnamon sugar and Chinese 5 spice. It took some getting used to but the more you ate it with the Carmel toffee sauce the more I enjoyed it. All in all I can see why people love this place! It's a 5 star restaurant for a 3 star price! If you're looking to expand your flavor palette and have a wonderful evening I can't recommend Clever Koi enough!

I love Japanese food so my decision was made. I drove over and parked in their complimentary lot. Ambiance (3.5/5): I've been to Japan and there are plenty of izakayas there. Think of them as small bars which often serve solid food. Zu fits that bit. It's a relatively small restaurant, probably seats about 30 people. and it's pretty no frills for a Japanese spot. I was seated at a booth in the corner of the restaurant. They have free WiFi which is always a good touch. Service (3/5): Service was friendly, though a bit inconsistent. My waitress wasn't as attentive as I would have liked. The type of service where you have to flag them down to get what you want and to close out. Drinks (4/5): Zu has a nice menu of Japanese and Korean beverages, including sake, soju, Japanese beer, and more. With that being said, I just had an iced green tea. Food (4/5): I got a nice variety. I went with the Japanese sausage off of the grill menu, the OBI mayo roll off of the sushi menu, and the cheese corn off of the appetizer menu. Let's start with the sausage. It's a small item, two small sausages, but absolutely delicious. The sausage was bursting with flavor and basted in a sweet sauce. Minus the portion size, perfection. The cheese corn also hit the spot, but the execution was off. The corn is served on a hot platter, and unfortunately some of the corn on the edges was badly burnt. The type of situation where they should start over. Which they didn't. Lastly, the OBI mayo roll is essentially a California roll with marinated warm shrimp on top in a mayo sauce. I didn't love the hot and cold combo (shrimp and sushi), but outside of the temperature, it was a delicious roll. All in all, a very food meal. My only gripe with Japanese food is that it can get expensive quick. Given that Zu is in Tempe, I was hoping that prices would be a little cheaper. With that being said, they do have a solid happy hour (and reverse happy hour) with both food and drink specials. Next time I stop by, I'd like to check out some of their Korean options. I focused on the Japanese stuff this time (which makes the majority of the menu). Next time around, the bulgogi is calling my name!

Lots of options for sushi, drinks, and appetizers on the happy hour menu. The spicy tuna roll was a refreshing roll with just the spicy tuna, cucumber and rice. A simple roll that still has a good spicy flavor but not too overpowering that it takes over your meal. The Vegas roll is a classic if you like fried rolls! Can't go wrong with this one. The nigiri was top notch. The yellowtail nigiri quite literally melts in your mouth and the flavors are buttery and soft. It's my personal favorite whenever I want nigiri. The salmon nigiri was also very good. Slights sweet but if you add soy sauce it balances it out. The jjambong pot was so filling. We ate this after the sushi. It's enough to be shared with 2-3 people and includes a mix of some seafoods, enoki mushrooms, onions, and ramyeon with a spicy broth. CONS- There's no valet service on the weekend, parking is limited. I asked if I can bring a small cake and was told they can't hold it in the kitchen only behind the host stand. You only get one flavor of the bottomless margaritas you can't switch flavors. The bathroom stalls have frosted doors with only about 85% privacy, check out my pic for reference. FYI- you can't take any food home so eat up :) Shout out to our server Eric he was fantastic!

The corn tortilla was so small and on top was a layer of ribeye meat. Topped with pickled onion. That's all ! It came with two small tacos. Small enough to fit in a woman's palm. Crazy. There was no option for rice or beans. The sauce itself was not very good and overall I left hungry. I do not recommend this as your entree and is not really even good for sharing as an appetizer. I will still return but I not likely to go out of my way.
