Blah, blah, inexpensive, blah. This place does a brisk business despite mediocre yogurt, no on-site seating, and a very predictable flavor and add-in lineup. I chose it because others said it had some no-sugar-added options, and indeed it did: choc and vanilla. Whee. The vanilla was passable, but the choc had a chemical taste that has increased in the 10 minutes since I finished. The prices here are rock-bottom. At least there's that. read more

The yogurt was good, but that is where it ends. The staff were apathetic, on phones, no greeting. The price was very high at $0.52 per ounce and we were charged for the weight of every bowl, lid, and portion cup. That might not be a big deal in general, but we purchased 7 bowls and the employee put them all on the scale together and put the lids on before weighing them. The toppings must be purchased in full portion cups, so you must pay for more than you might have wanted, 2-3 ounces each for the dozen or so toppings we selected. What the hell was I thinking! I was so missing out! That's what I get for being faithful to another chain for so long. I decided to stray a little over a week ago, only because my place had closed and I was in dire need of a fix. Well what do you know..this place's ghirardelli chocolate frozen yogurt (which they have everyday) is the best damn chocolate yogurt I have had anywhere! You take your first lick and that oh so yummy chocolate makes your saliva glands react (you know the feeling). Wow, the thing that blows me away is that this yogurt actually tastes like real chocolate. In the time I've discovered this place with this fabulous choco yogurt I've gone every night except three. They take credit card, bonus: show your student id for a discount and they have a frequent buyer card. My roommates go here all the time for yogurt, and sadly I'm often not around when they do. I finally got to try it recently and I have to admit it's pretty awesome. We went through a Cold-Stone phase at our last apartment, but that was way too expensive. This place is super cheap by comparison, and it's probably better that we're eating frozen yogurt not ice cream. Anyway, the first time I went was during the day, and it was pretty empty. But I went the other night and it was seriously packed! As the other yelpers mentioned, it seems to be chiefly SDSU students. It's not a problem or anything but as Walker S. mentioned the parking situation isn't ideal. It's self serve, which is kind of awesome because then you can have it exactly how you like it. The topping selection is fair, although as someone mentioned it's not fancy. I don't really look for gourmet when I'm eating frozen yogurt. I'm looking for cold, refreshing, teeth rotting goodness. However, they don't have pecans, and so they don't get five stars. Walnuts, almonds, peanuts, but no pecans?!?! What goes better with my vanilla-brownie-caramel-fudge mess than pecans? Boo. Anyway, I like how the price depends on the weight. That means if you don't want much, you don't have to pay for much. But even if you get a lot and save it for later it is still pretty reasonable. My first time here was right after they had opened in the morning. The place was empty, of course, besides me and the cashier, so I was able to browse the yogurt and toppings without the throngs of students that are known to frequent this location. Although the selection is not as vast as Baskin Robbin's 31 flavors, the ones that are offered hit the spot. Those flavors include, but are not limited to, classic Vanilla, Chocolate, Peanut Butter, and an Angel Food Cake option. They even offer frozen dessert options that are low in calories and sugar, and still taste great! The toppings are nothing out of the ordinary, but very abundant (oreos, graham crackers, gummy bears, peanuts, walnuts, sprinkles..). You're likely to find something to throw on top of your yogurt, no doubt. If I'm having a lousy day, and someone were to bring me a cup of Yogurt Express's frozen yogurt, I'd definitely have a smile on my face. Delicious. I found myself within a mile of Yogurt Express this afternoon, and based on all the yelpiness it's had going on, figured I had to try it. YIKES. This is easy. This is fun. This is CHEAP. This is pretty good yogurt, too. I wasn't all that big on the frozen yogurt thing when it was all huge in the early 80's, but this time I find myself kinda getting into it. But I refuse to say fro yo...I'm just not nearly that cool. Tiny place and virtually no atmosphere, but I was pretty much expecting that. Friendly staff, and they accept credit cards with no minimum - always a plus. WAY affordable, as others have said. I had four bucks cash, left my wallet in the car and grabbed my card instead since I was hungry and also knew I wanted a bottle of water. Imagine my surprise - a medium cup of yogurt with oreos AND a bottle of water (not a tiny Costco bottle either - a real bottle) for $3.47! And I got a punch card which I will promptly lose and a 20% card that's good til the end of the year, which I will try to keep track of. Mmmm...Yogurt Express. I have been hesitant about writing this review because i don't want you all to come here and force me to stand in line for the delish yogurt. But I can no longer in good conscience deprive you of this opportunity. What's so good about this place? The price and the toppings. I've traveled the globe (well i've only got as far as east county but i'm working on the rest) in search of tasty yogurt treats and keep coming back here as the bomb-diggity. What's so special? You get to pile on as many wonderful toppings as you want for a crowd pleasing under 35 cents an ounce. Oroes? check. Peanut butter cup? check. Nilla Wafers? check, captain crunch? check. You get the point. They typically have 8 flavors, rotating 4 of them out daily with 4 standards. so you can surely find something you like. Why only 4 stars? No seating anymore so cannot take the dog with you and sit outside, they don't expand into the tart and more fruity yogurts, and they don't have squat in the way of fresh fruit toppings. But bang for the buck it's the go to establishment. Just don't make me stand in line behind you! read more

This is probably my favorite frozen yogurt place in San Diego. The prices are incredibly cheap especially if you are a student. Plus it is self serve so you can put as many toppings on as you want instead of having to pay a set price for whatever the person constructing your yogurt wants to thrown on there. There is a constantly changing variety of flavors including low fat and sugar free options. During the day it is pretty quiet but at night is can be busy. I've never had to wait in line more than a couple of minutes even though there were a good amount of people in the store. It closes fairly early though. Somewhere around nine so it isn't somewhere you could stop after a late night out. Overall it is a clean cute little yogurt place with fairly friendly staff and a good atmosphere. read more

Never... unless too many PMSing girls from SDSU and various area High Schools are packed in like sardines with too much make up, Juicy Coutoure velour track suits, and grossly highlighted hair. Other than those broads, I love it there. See, I'm not a frequenter of the YE... I feel, like a fine wine or aged scotch, it should be enjoyed in moderation, and with patience. No brain freezes for me. Try the Angel Food Cake as a sample... too much is too much when it comes to that one. Coconut is meh. Vanilla Malt Wow Cow is where it's at, with brownies, a smidge of hot fudge, slivered almonds, and possibly a marshmallow or two. This place is a self serve yogurt place. The prices are cheap and the frozen yogurt is good. Its nothing super fancy with fresh sliced kiwis, crushed 70% cocoa Venezualan chocolate, or star fruit. It is more like crushed Butterfingers and cherry pie filling type stuff. This place is always packed with coeds. On any given night you see more SDSU sweatshirts than an Aztecs game. One night the whole frick'n womens vollyball team was here. Nothing makes you feel shorter than standing next to a college volleyball player. Anyway, even when there are tons of people the lines move really quickly. They give a good student discount and you can get a 20% off card even if you are not a student. Parking can be tight in this little lot, but if you come at night it is not too bad because many of the other shops are closed. read more

I felt like eating frozen yogurt. "We must have a yogurt place somewhere in La Mesa," I thought. Duh, check Yelp. After reading reviews for a few other places, this one won because of the self-serve/pay by weight thing. That way, it would be impossible to go home crying because "obviously the girl working there liked my brother more than me because she gave him more," which frequently happens at Coldstone. The first time I went I got....everything? I was a bit overzealous with the freedom of toppings. I'm used to paying per topping, so I usually only get 1. Now I could get all of them? It was hard to hold myself back. Still, I found myself in the car thinking "why didn't I get the rainbow sprinkles and try the carob chips too?" Next time, Yogurt Express. I love this place! They change up the flavors, all the time. And aside from Rocky's out by Kearny Mesa this is a true hot spot! It's really cheap once you get the card, and if you are a high school student or college student you also get a discount, which is always WAY awesome! Its a small place and get crammed with a rush. You create your own custom yogurt creation, add what you want get what size you want, but know that you are paying by weight and that is where it can get expensive. I have tried a few self serve yogurt places, and by far this one wins me. The people the run the place are pretty nice also. Parking is the downside, its in a small shopping area. So far, of all my experience of frozen yogurt-ing, this is the place to go for frozen yogurt. And the main reason is the price. I usually expect to pay around $5 for a full container of yogurt at other places like NuYo or Yog-art, but doing that at Yogurt Express cost me only $2! With my student ID, of course. The guy working there even let us sample whatever we wanted so I just tried out pretty much everything. Most places are pretty stingy with allowing samples. My favorite flavor was the boysenberry. The one thing I wish they had here were more "cold toppings". They have all kinds of "dry toppings" (nuts, candy, cereal, etc), but I was hoping they'd have more fruits or mochi or coconut jelly. But I really can't complain, since I hardly had to pay anything for it. Next time I'm just going to get the large cup and fill it up all the way now that I know how cheap it turned out to be for 23 cents/oz. I'm giving 1 star because this place is got GREEDY!! #1 As of Jan2012 They do not accept coupons anymore. #2 They do give out stamp cards though. Buy 10 get 1 free (up to $2.50 value) COOL RIGHT?! NOPE, the have stipulations. I always order the largest tub. Its $6.00 if you can close the lid. If its over you have to have it weighed. Well I bought one last week, I fit the lid on it. I give them my stamp card thinking they would take off 2.50. Nope, they said if you want to use the $2.50 off stamp card you have to have it weighed instead! WTF?! If it gets weighed it about $9.00! Ah good old yogurt express. I used to frequent this place all the time. Not only is it self serve, but students get 25% off the already super low prices. They used to have jelly bellys but they took them out. :-( Great selection of non-fat, low-fat yogurts but they're all too sweet for my taste. I've given into the tart yogurt and its gotten a hold of me. I would recommend this place to anyone who is into sweet frozen yogurt with lots of fatty toppings like cookie dough and hot fudge sauce. Mm... my first love when it comes to frozen yogurt would have to be Yogurt Express. Decor is nothing trendy, fancy, or anything. Just great tasting self-serve yogurt with a large spectrum of flavors and toppings. They always feature sugar-free and fat free flavors, which was a blessing for my friend Natalie. No, she's not diabetic. Too much sugar makes her back hurt. I know, sounds silly... but she's a silly girl. Sorry, no mochi, papaya, or taro here, but who needs that when you got HOT fudge. Not chocolate syrup, but HOT fudge. It's cheaper than most weigh-in frozen yogurt places. They also give a generous student discount. And when I used to live in San Diego, I received buy one get one free coupons all the time. The guy who worked there was friendly, too. If you ever need your frozen yogurt fix in the SDSU area, this is the place to feed your addiction. *Edit 09.06.07 I came here again, and I realize it doesn't have that many flavors to choose from, but the five star standing still stays, because the yogurt tastes delicious! Having been to Yogurtland and Tutti Frutti, I wasn't impressed with the selection of flavors. Although the yogurt is very good indeed. After a long day of apartment searching in the area, my friends and I were hoping for a refreshing spoon full of original tart yogurt with fresh strawberries! Yum!! Unfortunately, all they have are dried toppings like cereal, candies and coconut. Cons: No tart and No fresh fruits! (only some preserved ones). Yuck! Thanks Yelperoonies!... For helping me locate this gem. I stumbled upon Yogurt Express as I was writing a review. I was surprised at the that over 35 reviews yielded a 4.5 star rating. I had no choice but to check it out. This was my first experience with frozen yogurt; "froyo" as many of you call it. I'm an ice cream lover by heart but I can tell you... I have fallen in love with froyo thanks to Yogurt Express. This place is great. They had 8 flavors on tap. I really liked the fact that you could take as long as you want when taste testing all the flavors. Me being a froyo newbie, I had a great experience. Since I am trying to lower my calorie intake, froyo is a great substitute for ice cream. The calories and fat of froyo are really low. The Wow-Cow flavors are only 40ish calories per serving. All the flavor are awesome. Of course my fav has to be ghirardelli chocolate. The angel food vanilla is so good too. I'm coming back here soon. Everyday, they change a few of the flavors so you will not get bored of the same old thing. To top it all off, there are many many fresh toppings for your froyo. The nana granola topping... uhhhh (bliss expression) damn, I just can't stop thinking of this place. Thank you Yogurt Express! You've made a froyo lover out of me =) read more

(updated 3/23/12) Ok, so I'm a fan because one its in my neighborhood, it opens late and they will always have a flavor I love everyday of the week regardless of the change up the flavors daily. I love the vanilla. I'm a fan because I control how much I want in my bowl and the pricing is not to much for the amount I prefer to have. n I'm into the mini size (3oz.) at Pinkberry so self-serve is great for me. Now what I DON'T like about this place is not enoug fruit choices and the one they do have strawberry is out of a bag or can so nothing fresh there. Pinkberry has me sold on that. I love all the fruit choices and they are always fresh. With that being said, I typically will go with just the frozen yogurt. I will from time to time add almonds which is what I had this evening. OH MY GOD! This place is AMAZING!!!!!!! For those that have never been here, let me tell you a little about it. It is SELF SERVE frozen yogurt. You get to decide how much you want, what flavors you want to mix, and what toppings you want. They have like 20 possible toppings, and usually about 8 different flavors. All of the ice cream is non fat, i beleive, and most is sugar free. It is soooooooooooooooooooooo good. But the best part is, its only $0.23 per ounce!!!!!!!! I usually get a large cup overflowing, with sprinkles and it comes out to like $2.50. If you are a student, you get 25% OFF!!!!!!!!! Amazing place. I was craving frozen yogurt all day long- I didn't even care where I got it from! Both Sam's Club and Costco were closed by the time my boyfriend and I got there at 6:10 PM and 6:20 PM, and I was getting more and more upset by the minute while my cravings were getting stronger and stronger! Finally, my bf researched on YELP and came across this place =] Not only is it open until 11 PM, but it is VERY cheap at 23 cents an ounce (with a coupon or student ID)! I saved $0.90 last night with the coupon! Not to mention, they have little sample cups on the side so you can serve yourself samples. I was so excited- I tried almost everything (and pretty much satisfied my cravings, but it would've been messed up to not buy anything!). My bf bought me a medium cup filled with Thin Mint, Boysenberry, and Strawberry flavors. He ended paying only $2.70 (At Golden Spoon, you definitely would have needed to pay $3.50 or more for that amount, especially since GS keeps raising their prices and serves less and less as each year passes by). I am a frozen yogurt junkie. This place is the first I've ever had the pleasure of tasting the orgasmic taste of it. Other places have come close to topping it but not yet. The staff is extremely friendly and they do an awesome job with keeping the place neat. They are also receptive to suggestions and criticisms. They do not do tart yogurt, but only because it doesn't sell well and they don't have a unit that can adequately store Cheesecake bits. Other than that this place is perfect! So yummy! Probably the best frozen yogurt I have had and it's now (as of March 2013) $0.31 cents an ounce. My favorite combination is peanut butter yogurt with Butter Fingers and hot fudge! Seems to always cost me under $3.00 for a small which is actually pretty dense! I also love the cake batter flavor and adding rainbow sprinkles to it. Delicious! I used to live in La Mesa so I was right near there. I'm now in Pacific Beach and still regularly make trips there just for that yogurt! -1 though because they have no sitting whatsoever! They used to have 1 or 2 tables out front which are gone now. I end up sitting on parking concrete just to eat it. As of 2013 there is NO MORE STUDENT DISCOUNT!! =( I might end up moving back to La Mesa (I swear not just for this yogurt) so more trips for me! I can see some people not liking the yogurt here. So, I've been to a lot of yogurt places (Yogurt Mill, Golden Spoon, Yogurtland, Paradise Yogurt, etc.), and this is the best, hands-down. First of all, it's the cheapest place I've ever been, 24 cents an once for students, and they never check your ID. I also have a stamp card from there, and I don't even want to admit how many free yogurts I've gotten from it. They have great flavors, which they switch up everyday, and it's self-serve. I always sample the new flavors before I decide. One very important thing to remember- they're open until 11 every night! Actually, it's probably open latest out of any business on Lake Murray (I know, I used to live there) If you want to beat the rush, this place is usually empty later at night. I always feel bad coming in 10 min before close, but the employees are really chill and don't seem to mind. I've brought all visiting friends and relatives here, and everyone loved it. I really cannot offer much more praise than what has already been strewn around this review page, however - I will make it brief. AMAZING! Eight flavors of frozen yogurt, fairing from traditional (chocolate and vanilla) to more exotic (heath bar or ghiardelli chocolate) in a variety of nutritional values (low cal, low fat, sugar free, etc.). What sets this place apart is the fact that you can fill your own cup of as many flavors as you'd like, then place as many toppings as you'd like on the yogurt (we're talking at least 30 options), to finally have your selection weighed and given a heavy discount if you look around college aged. I can usually overflow a medium sized cup (which is huge) for about $2. What a deal! read more

Disappointed. Went there excited by all the flavors the reviewers boasted about. The mint and birthday cake flavors sounded so good. But when I went there I realized both these flavors were both sugar free...yuck (really bad for you and horrible aftertaste)! The rest were vanilla, chocolate, peanut butter; no taro or mango, or anything else exciting. Tasted all the flavors and left not purchasing any yogurt. My daughter and I are crazy about this place. A great place to go to when I want something ice-creamy without the guilt. I really like the self-serve because, let;s face it. it;s always great to get exactly what you want. The service there can be a little spotty. (the kids that work there can get distracted.)
