This is a very old school Asian restaurant. This place is also on a busy street and I am sure I have driven past it a hundred times at least because it doesn't stand out. I am so happy that I went to Yelp and found this place. The food was fantastic, the service was fantastic, the kindness was fantastic. We got there at the same time as apparently everyone else and yet it didn't take too long for the food to come out. It was extremely fresh, the best tasting dumplings I've ever had. I just felt like I found my next favorite Asian food place. David the server is absolutely 100% on the ball with all things. April will give you a sweet conversation and never let your water glass empty. They work as a beautiful team and I will absolutely be back. I am so happy to have found this place! It fits probably about quick guess 60 people, there were probably about 25 when we got there. I'm very happy that we found a place that's not far from us that has fantastic food. Oh I'm sorry I had chicken fried rice because that's what I was in the mood for which was cooked beautifully, my wife had shrimp and noodles and she said the shrimp was cooked perfectly! Wouldn't know how the food was. We walked after waiting 40 min for someone to take our order. You got a girl standing there doing nothing but waiting for someone's water glass to go below half otherwise she stands in a corner doing nothing. I will NEVER go back again!!! read more

We will never visit this place again. We had shrimp fried rice and chicken fried rice, both so overly salty I just could not eat it. Husband was so hungry he ate half his shrimp fried rice, he will be drinking water all night! The chicken was plentiful, however it was gross, chunks of chicken with fat and gristle attached. The egg rolls were just cabbage and carrots, lots of carrots. We should have been warned by the dirty worn door you had to open to enter. The one good thing I can say the staff are warm , friendly and give great service. Maybe we hit them on a bad day, maybe the cook quit and his cousin was filling in. My family dines here at least once a month. It is slightly expensive for Asian food, but we still feel it's worth it. We actually CRAVE their sizzling rice soup - when my daughter isn't feeling well, and wants something yummy with lots of flavor (- in a mild way, hard to explain the savory goodness!) she always asks for sizzling rice soup! I am surprised by some of the negative reviews- but I've not ordered those dishes... Our standby dishes which are great every time: moo goo, garlic chicken, chicken mushroom. We (I and my wife) just returned from an excellent dinner at the Yen Ching (Mesa AZ). Starting with our fabulous Sweet & Sour soup , then following the awesome Kung Pao Chicken were just to die for. To the spicy food we drank our favourite beer, the Sapporo. The impeccable service was attentive, pleasant and professional, just right to put us at ease. Great family restaurant, highly satisfactory from all points of view - the best Chinese restaurant we ever eat at (and we know quite a few!). And all that at a most reasonable price for rather generous portions! We shall return soon read more

I ordered takeout from this restaurant today: Orange Chicken and Crab puffs..The food was good....Portions huge.....The pieces of chicken were cooked nicely. They could have been a little crispier. The orange sauce was good and plentiful. The crab puffs were cooked perfect, and the filling was great.. My only not so great comment is that the inside of the restaurant smelled like old moldy feet...I don't think I would like to dine in. read more

I was very disappointed in the quality of the food. This was a while back and I don't remember what was ordered but it definitely measure up particularly with the reviews I saw. Maybe it was a bad nite or what I ordered wasn't a specialty. I probably ordered a cashew Chicken dish. Hard to mess up but easy to not put in all the goodes. Maybe I am spoiled having eaten a lot of Chinese and authentic Japanese in San Francisco in the late 60's..Used to eat in a little place where they still made Sukiyaki to order. Our friends like this place so we all came yesterday after the lunch rush. Clean restaurant, very good service and good food. Nice ambience. My Sesame Chicken combination lunch was exceptional. Everyone's meal was hot and fresh from the kitchen. Hot tea was above average as well. Sweetie and I like our tea a little stronger and more flavorful than many people I guess? First time at this restaurant. It was a very pleasant experience. Extremely relaxing atmosphere. They Have a big beautiful fish tank to look at why you eat. Probably a 75 gallon one. We're searching for a "really good" Chinese restaurant in Mesa, and decided to give Yen Ching a try after reading the usual mix of reviews here on Yelp. I'm in the "meh...I've had better" crowd... I ordered the sesame chicken combo dinner, which came with egg drop soup and chow mien. Soup was excellent (and temperature HOT), but the sesame chicken was tough, and if not for the sauce, would have been flavorless. The chow mien was equally bland. My brother-in-law ordered Korean ribs for an appetizer and shrimp in lobster sauce for his dinner. He liked the shrimp dish, but we both agreed the ribs were tough, and again, not a lot of flavor. The good? The staff works their tails off, and tries very hard to please! Nice people serving so-so food. The restaurant has been there a long time, looks clean inside and appears to have a strong group of locals that support them. The prices ranged approximately $8.50-$14.00 per dish. The dinner specials can easily feed two people, which I would consider a bang for your buck as far as pricing goes. 4/5 Conclusion: Overall, my experience was pleasant and nonchalant. We finally found a great Chinese restaurant! We have been looking for the basic chicken chow mein that you can enjoy every bite of! And we did at this restaurant. I hate to leave this review because this restaurant has been wonderful for many years. We've had a couple problems throughout but nothing major. It's always been a tradition we go here for New Year's Eve. This last time we went, we got raw ribs which unfortunately didn't notice until we ate a few bites so I'm hoping we will be fine since I'm writing this as I'm sitting at the table waiting for the rest of our food we ordered an hour ago. No one understands English except the gentleman running the place so it's hard to get anyone to understand anything. Still waiting for a bill and we want to leave. The gentleman apologized but it's too late. They need to hire help that can actually do the job. They just informed us they are now cooking the rest of the meal and we need to leave. Fantastic hot and sour soup made from scratch the best we've had since trying the hot and sour at Jade palace in Scottsdale. The chicken fried rice is also killer. Service is friendly maybe a touch slow but worth the wait. They instantly serve you hot tea and water when you sit down which is a nice touch. Large portions that are easily shared. Typical Chinese restaurant atmosphere with the pink walls and Lotus flowers and fish tank and very bright lights but super comfortable seating. We will definitely return very soon. My husband and I love their mushroom appetizer in garlic butter.... he also loves the chicken enchiladas in their delicious red sauce.... I love their Shrimp with those same mushrooms,what ever you choose you will be delighted.... The service is excellent, they are so friendly.... We went to Yen Ching for dinner. Just the two of us so we were looking forward to a couple of tasty dishes. We ordered Pot Stickers and Mongolion Beef. My husband also ordered a soda. The Mongolion Beef was absolutely horrible. It was dry and tough and appeared to have been sitting for days. When my husband asked for a refill on his soda he was barked at and told there was no refills. The restaurant was near empty and the two staff members merely stood in the corner staring at us. Something must've happened after COVID - we have not eaten since COVID started. Upon entering, there was an overwhelming smell of cat urine, ewwwww! We ate there anyway because we were hungry. At 4:30-5pm, not many people dining-in here (gee, I wonder why?!) The food has changed. Went with two other people, ordered the General Tso's chicken and the Spicy Braised Fish with the intent of getting a third dish if we were still hungry. The fish came with an option to substitute fried rice for white rice for $1.50, and I requested that. The fried rice came out way too fast for it to have been fried to order. It tasted like steamed rice seasoned with soy sauce, and there were maybe 5 carrots/peas in the entire bowl. It was too salty for me to enjoy, but I kept it on my plate hoping that the sauces from the main dishes would cut some of the salt. Spicy fish and chicken came out, neither had even the faintest spice but both were horribly salty. In addition they were overcooked to the point that I couldn't tell which meat was which, and had to rely on the garnish to tell the two dishes apart. The chicken was the worse of the two, because in addition to being salty and overcooked it was cloyingly sweet and buried under a thick (ketchup-consistency) sauce that was impossible to eat around. I told the waiter that we wanted to exchange the chicken for a different dish. He said that this was impossible, and that this is how General Tso's chicken is supposed to taste. I started to argue, but decided it wasn't worth it since even if we got a replacement, we'd likely be trading one inedible dish for another. We picked at the fish some more, and left hungry. When we got the bill, it turned out that we were charged three times for fried rice, even though we only requested it with one dish. read more

This review is in regards to the quality of the food only. The service was amazing and the staff was extremely attentive despite being so short handed today. I order the shrimp chow mein, beef with broccoli, and Mongolian beef. I really, REALLY wanted to love this place because I've had the hardest time finding decent Chinese food in Arizona. Basically, the food was super bland with very little flavor and the portions were super small for what I paid for. It was around $29 for all three entrees and they didn't even come with soup. The portion size is still bothering me. It was literally maybe one big scoop or entree drowning in sauce. But it's mostly the terrible taste of the food. I couldn't even swallow the Mongolian beef. They seated 3 more tables right around us, we waited and watched as all three tables seated AFTER us were not only waited on but two of them had their entrees served BEFORE they came over and attempted to take our order. Nice ambiance inside. My daughter took me here for lunch. They brought hot tea to the table which was a nice surprise. We had their lunch special which included soup. The soup was good and hot but if you want some crunchy noodles for your soup it's $1.50 a bowl, then they bring the appetizer plate which was a very good cheese puff and fried chicken drumette with a teriyaki sauce. Sadly these were cold. Deep fried food served cold is never a good thing. Our lunch special choices were lemon chicken and almond chicken. The lemon chicken was the worst I've ever had. The lemon chicken was served with a red sauce and the thick deep fried chicken breast was tasteless. Specials are served with brown rice, you are not offered a choice of white rice. Ive been coming here for almost 20 years, and the quality of food, staff, and decor have not changed one bit. Please, please, PLEASE check their hours before stopping. They tend to change. Now, when you get here, DO NOT be put off but the pink and blue 80's decor. The food is worth it. So, so worth it. Everytime we come here, we get the same older gentleman (who really is the *sweetest* guy) serving us. He's always prompt, attentive, and more than cordial. We always get a Bo Bo platter (also called a Pu Pu platter), tea, and 2 side dishes. The platter (for 2) comes w/ an egg roll, deep fried shrimp, crab puffs, foil wrapped chicken (one of my faves), spare ribs, and beef on a skewer (complete w/ a flaming platter to crisp it up). This place is one of the only places in AZ Ive found that serves this platter w/ flames. The tea is always delicious and hot. We opt for chicken fiend rice (some of the best in the valley) and chicken chow mein (crispy noodles), along w/ an extra order of crab puffs.
