Yankee Kitchen is an old-time diner style restaurant that is famous for their omelets and burgers. This location on Market Street has been open for over 40 years. I have eaten here often in that time span. The food is good.... In fact this restaurant was visited for lunch by Barack Obama and Joe Biden when they were campaigning for the 2010 election. For breakfast today, I opted for a special that included two eggs, breakfast meat, home fries, and toast. I had the eggs over medium, crispy bacon, and Texas toast. Yankee Kitchen has some good breakfast! 7:30 a. m. on a Springy Spring morning, two eggs, country fried steak, rye toast, and a big serving of Yankee Kitchen home fries! Which, you can get green peppers added for an extra .40 cents. Wife had a grilled cheese on Texas Toast. And she asked for and got it nice and brown-ily toast-woasty. Yippee, I mean, grilled cheese for breakfast? Commie! I on the other hand got a big delicious country fried steak with snausage gravy and rye toast and homey fries. And two eggs over medium. My favorite breakfast joint!! Great food with better prices. Hometown feel to it! Bring cash!!!

Not the best place for breakfast, and certainly not the worst. For those people who rate them lowly and bitch about their cash only policy, here's some news for you. They make these things called "automated teller machines", or "ATM" for short. They dispense this stuff called "money", or as it's also known as "cash". Credit card transactions cost the business owner 2-3% for each transaction, so because of your laziness and inability to carry cash, we're all paying higher prices for our food. You should always have some cash on hand anyways in case the card readers don't work, or for a place that takes only cash. Service was attentive without being annoying. Our server kept the drinks filled and brought ketchup and hot sauce for our breakfast unprompted. Two things that prevented me from rating them higher. One, for a place that's known in this area for allegedly having the best home fries in the area, I believe they're severely lacking. The best home fries are cooked on a grill with a mixture of crispy and well done pieces. The potatoes here are done to a consistency of boiled potatoes, as if you were getting ready to make mashed potatoes. They're kind of soft and soggy, so if you're looking for crispy home fries, look elsewhere. Secondly, the bacon appears to be deep fried, see the picture I attached. While bacon isn't exactly a health food, deep frying it doesn't help. It ends up so crispy that it disintegrates into a bunch of pieces, as if you took a hammer to peanut brittle. Bacon should be crispy, but grilled, not deep fried. Hell, you can get decent consistency on bacon in a microwave oven. That's all, folks. Give it a shot and see what you think. read more

Free wifi is offered (ask for password). There's also another dining room in the back (covered up). It feels like the 1980s in here with homey and inviting atmosphere. The main open dining room has counter seating, table seating and booths along the windows, and various framed pictures on the walls. Each of the shiny table surfaces (excl counter) has embossed colorful ads of local businesses. The breakfast menu offerings consist of omelets, egg dishes, pancakes, French toast, waffles, and sides. Full breakfast meals include coffee or tea. Most full breakfasts priced $3.98-$8.50, Egg Beaters $1.50 extra. The regular menu offerings include salads, sandwiches, triple deckers, burgers, soups, chili, steaks (top sirloin & ribeye), sides, and 20 Famous Platters (includes salad, choice of potato, roll & butter, soup, and scoop of ice cream for $7.99 each) such as ham steak, chicken strips, fried chicken, hot turkey, fried shrimp, English white fish, liver, chicken parm, veal parm, eggplant parm, pasta w meatballs, BBQ chicken breast, 3/4 chopped sirloin, and other choices. I took a seat at an open booth and the waitress promptly took my drink order (ice water) and gave me a menu. For lunch, I decided on the Eggplant Parmesan Platter ($7.99) with choice of spaghetti or rigatoni. The side salad in a bowl was fresh, which had iceberg lettuce, tomato, cucumber, green pepper, dressing on the side. The minestrone soup was very hot with a mix of vegetables, beans, and elbow macaroni (very soft). The dinner roll was soft and warm. The Eggplant Parmesan with Rigatoni was a good sized portion which had round deep fried breaded slices of eggplant (greasy) topped with melted mozzarella cheese and a side of soft rigatoni, smothered with ample thick marinara sauce with onions (slightly sweet). I did have some of the food in a to go box, so I could enjoy a scoop of chocolate ice cream for dessert. Stuffed! Overall, a good lunch, nothing fancy at a small price. The service was good. My sister and I had an early lunch on a Sunday morning about 11:00 am. No surprise, the restaurant was busy but we were quickly seated and our server promptly came to our table. We both ordered hamburgers which were tasty and hot. While sitting at our table, another server came by with a cart handing out free rice pudding dishes. The server made a point of explaining to each table that the pudding recipe "was his mother's recipe" and there was no doubt he was proud of the pudding. One interesting note were photographs on the wall near the front that were from a visit of Obama and Biden to the restaurant. If I recall, it may have been in 2008 prior to election but I could be wrong about the date. In any case, that must have been an exciting day to have the upcoming President and Vice-President of the United States eat a meal at the Yankee Kitchen. Overall, this is a restaurant with a solid reputation in Boardman and consistently serves food that is very reasonably priced with good portions. Breakfast at Yankee Kitchen. Dollar for dollar the best breakfast in town. I had a Ham & Cheese omelet, with a side of home fries. No they are not like the ones you get at most restaurants, they are cooked like my mother used too. Boiled, peeled and cooked on the flat top, seasoned with a dash of paprika. I especially like it when you get a few crispy ones. The omelet is large and full of ham and cheese. You also get an order of toast with this breakfast. Bottomless coffee for just a dollar more! My wife got the French toast which consisted of 3 slices of Texas bread. She got an order of grilled ham on the side. She could not finish neither item, therefore I got one of her slices of ham! She got the bottomless cup of hot tea with her meal. As an added bonus, we each got a serving of homemade rice pudding, which is the owner's way of saying " thank you ", Sundays only. The french fries my gf ordered were obviously shipped in frozen, and the coffee wasn't that good either. A bad dining experience from a man that seldom gives bad reviews. Continuing our quest for good breakfast places in the Boardman-Poland area, we visited Yankee Kitchen on Sunday. It was fairly busy when we arrived with several tables waiting for food. Our waitress was prompt with coffees and water but we did wait a bit for our food. We heard the waitress tell a couple other tables that they were backed up because, "Andy is on vacation" so we'll blame to slow food on Andy whoever he is! My western omelet was good but I forgot to order it with cheese which would have made it better! My husband had the gyro omelet which he said was quite good. We both ordered home fries but we should have split a single as the servings were very large. Home fries themselves were just "ok" as they could have used some more seasoning and tasted like they might have been sitting on the grill for a while before serving. Only two waitresses one with the long black pony tail was rude to other customers when approached. The other one was nice. As I was looking around the place I saw both go from one job to the next like handle cash transactions, cleaning up, making toast, grabbing rolls out of packaging, bringing out food and taking orders. I understand they were/are short staffed but I didn't find it very sanitary. There was one girl in particular who saw him standing there with a menu at the register, but she still refused to acknowledge my 6'1 BLACK Boyfriend! Found this restaurant online when looking for a place for breakfast-for-dinner on a Tuesday night. When pulled up only 1 car but looked open. Went in and were nicely greeted and seated. There was another couple in a booth and 2 more people came in later. A clean and cared for place. The waitress said the owner/cook is Greek and makes a lot of food from scratch, especially the Greek options. Ordered a breakfast special and the food was good. Only snag was when the bill came and they don't take cards. However they do have a cash machine inside with a $3 fee. Overall a good find and we will return. read more

Even though I told the waitress I needed to order lunch. When she finally asked me if I needed a menu 10 min had passed and I said it would be nice. she then smarted off to me as which point I decided I no longer wished to eat there. not a good first impression. Not the cleanest place. Ketchup bottles are reused/refill......yuckie stickie. Turn off. As was as the salt/pepper shakers - I think never washed ! I have discovered this on each visit. Typically eat breakfast here, quantity/portion size is good. Though the food quality lacks. Under cooked potatoes. The bacon is horrible. Good portion but obviously old bacon from the day or days before - very little attempt to ever reheat before serving it. I strongly suspect the bacon is not cooked on the grill but they deep fry the bacon in a fryer ! The toast is made on the counter out front in full view by the waitresses - here is the CATCH. Watch the waitresses make your toast - no gloves no hand washing. I have sat and watched on several occasions different waitress walk away from handling money at the register directly to making toast - no hand washing - NOTHING ! Over all, the place could be much better if they paid attention to detail. Side note, they do not accept credit cards but the owner has a credit card machine on site where you can withdraw from but for a hefty fee which "lines the pocket" of the owner. Four stars? Really? Haven't been to a place this BAD in years. Stopped in for the first time today (a Monday, around 10 am) for breakfast. Place has been here forever, so what could go wrong, right? Rrrrrright...where to start? The old school diner decor is charming initially, but it fades quickly when, upon taking a seat at one of the booths, you find the heel of your shoe sticking to the floor (god please don't wear sandals or flip-flops if you come here!). Felt like somebody had poured syrup on the ancient grimy carpet. Now, I've eaten in many dumpy-type places that have more than made up for their lackluster or even dingy ambience with delicious food. I'm way more adventurous than your average diner. Looks can be deceiving, and some of the best kitchens are hidden in some of the least likely places. Not so the Yankee Kitchen. My sister ordered the chicken and waffles special because why not? -- where better to try than a classic American diner. Apparently, anywhere but the Yankee Kitchen. She was served a pre-fab waffle with 4 thin McNugget-style chicken fingers. Seriously? I ordered the hash browns with my eggs, for a reasonable extra charge, but what was delivered to the table was a generous portion of God knows what. It appeared to be a pile of potato-like substance, about the color of overdone scalloped potatoes, mushy, without the requisite crispiness that defines any self-respecting hash brown. For the record, Yankee cooks -- hash browns should be white, except for the golden brown crispy bits. And they must be made from real potatoes, as opposed to whatever these were. Neither I nor my fellow diners could determine just what was wrong with them -- but something was very wrong. Suffice it to say that they smelled and tasted (gag!) beyond off. As in maybe instant potatoes way past their expiration date, simmered in rancid cooking oil, and finished with a scoop of moldy dust from the back closet of a thrift store. Major fail. Almost laughed out loud when the waitress offered to bring a box! -- no thanks, we're good! Why is this place still open? How did it get ANY good reviews? Why would anyone eat here? What is the Democratic party thinking by making it a regular campaign stop for candidates when they come through town? Are they trying to kill off their own candidates? No wonder we lost the election. Take my advice -- if you only listen to one review, listen to this one and DO NOT STOP HERE, DO NOT PASS GO. Keep driving until you hit Rte 224 and then pick ANY other place to eat. Or ignore this warning and​ sign on for a year of food nightmares. read more

Yuck. The waitress was rude. The home fries were a glop of greasy potato mush that tasted like old rancid oil like it's been on grill for days. First time I ever ordered food and left. The place smelled like natural gas to start when I walked in the door. I ordered a scrambler mess and my wife ordered a waffle. I love this place! Been going with my friends for years, service is on point. Whenever we go in the am and they are busy within a minute someone is there to greet us and the breakfast is out within 5 minutes top.
