First of all, prices were beyond for a family restaurant. No family of four could afford to dine here. Portions were tiny and included no sides! Chicken parm sandwich was a frozen patty with a little sauce and a sprinkle of parm cheese on an old looking bun. My son said it looked like a school cafeteria sandwich, but the school sandwich was better! This served in the middle of a big plate! Not even a slice of cheese on a chicken parm sandwich!! No chips, fries, not even a pickle!! The bread was in a basket with no napkin - just laid in the plastic. Silverware was in another plastic basket, not set out at each place, as were the napkins. Flies buzzed around as we tried to eat. The tablecloths were made of oil cloth, and they were sticky from age. Our waitress stood at the counter and ate, while on her phone. Only came once to ask if two people wanted a drink refill. We didn't want to make a scene or we would have gotten up and left. An adorable old school family Italian restaurant made my day! My sister in law and I were supposed to go somewhere else and it was closed. We had a wonderful lunch. The restaurant is small but very inviting. I had the medium size wedding soup with 2 meatballs and their amazing bread. My sister in law got fettuccini Alfredo. This place is truly something else! It's not fancy. The menu is compact. But that's the fun part! The food was straight forward and good - fresh and hot. Staff was nice and they have a full bar. The tomato sauce is a topic of debate - some love it some and some say it's too simple. It is a pretty straight forward tomato sauce with no frills or thrills. Probably why some would compare it to a canned tomato sauce. But it also might be home made. Who knows. Maybe that's the kick you'll get out of going there. The cavatelli are more like gnocchi in my opinion but everything we had was tasty and hot and fresh. Portion sizes are not small either and we walked out with some left overs. I would ask for a table away from the back of the restaurant since that's where the restrooms are. If you want to share a dish with your date, there's a slight up charge which I wasn't used to seeing before I came here. So this is a place I wouldn't bring my in laws to meet me for the first time or I wouldn't host a business dinner there because it's not fancy enough but I would bring a date or friends or family for surer or a fun laid back meal. read more

Scarsella's Restaurant is well known in the Youngstown area for their Italian food. Their pasta and sauce is delicious and in my opinion the finest in the entire Mahoning Valley. Their home-made pastas are exactly how grandma used to make. It will certainly bring back a memory to anyone of Italian heritage. Tonight being Friday, I wanted to try their fish dinner, as I had heard from friends that it was really good. They were telling the truth! I got a good sized piece of plain fish served over shells and sauce. It came with a salad and fresh slices of Italian bread. My wife just got an order of the plain fish by itself. This place deserves a 0 star rating. The workers were extremely rude and instead of actually doing their job they were just standing around and talking instead of actually bringing the food. I saw that there were a hair in my food and when I asked if I could get a different plate the waitress told me that it was probably my hair and told me I was over exaggerating and I wouldn't be able to get a different plate unless I paid for it. So I asked a different waitress and she said the same thing. The hair in my food was ginger and my hair is black. I didn't catch their names, however, this is absolutely unacceptable behavior, these workers should not be working in customer service. read more

I truly stumbled upon this place on the way to Pittsburgh last year and now I think about it a lot and cannot wait to go back! I always go with the basics the first time I visit a restaurant because I figure if they can do the basics well, they'll do other things well. You know the kind that offers okay meatloaf and mystery meat "country fried steaks". So not a great first impression. What about second impression? Well... We are at an Italian place so my wife ordered a ceasar salad. They said "we don't have ceasar dressing". Umm... What? Bit that's Italian...? What about balsamic dressing? Nope! BUT they do have French dressing! LOL not kidding! They didn't have two of some of the most iconic Italian dressings but they had FRENCH! So when my wife and I ordered my fettuccine alfredo I really did not expect much, at all... What happened next will forever be engraved in my mind... I had probably one of the best, if not THE best Alfredo I have ever had! I stand before God and before man proclaiming the truth, the truth that this was amazeballs! Soo creamy... So rich.... I was stationed in Italy for two years and this is one of the most authentic places I've eaten in the U.S. Three visits and 2 out of 3 great service. Third visit not so much. Had the red-headed older waitress. Felt like I was bothering her when I placed my order. In town on business, I scouted a few local Italian eateries that would harken me back to my East Coast roots. When I happened upon Scarsella's, it reminded me of a little joint where my family used to go and I decided to give it a shot. This was what I was looking for and I wished I had brought a bigger appetite! The waitress recommended the Lasagna or house-made Cavatelli. Considering my stomach could not take such a large meal of Lasagna at 11:15 AM, I opted for the Cavatelli. Definitely was not disappointed! While the marinara ran on the thinner side, which is not necessarily an issue, the pasta was fresh and the accompanying meatball was delicious! I do recommend Scarsella's and look forward to returning for a full Italian dinner with wine- when I'm not on the clock! I trust that my next review of this homey little joint will be 4 stars or better on my next trip! read more
