Named Yank Sing, I wasn't sure if as a Yank I would be called on to sing (this is SF after all) or what I was in for. This is a great dim sum place walking distance from the Ferry Building. I'd recommend getting reservations so you don't have to wait because it can get crowded at brunch/lunchtime. I think they do turn the tables pretty quickly though so if you don't have a reservation, it might be okay. Be careful not to over order like we did, because it's easy to do. The food came out lightning fast. Like I'm not sure how, but within minutes of placing our order they were already starting to bring it out for us. Here's my choices on my dining table, starting with a nifty large clear glass teapot of loose leaf pu-erh. Compared to tea restaurants' clay or ceramic versions, this one in Yank Sing shows an amount of water filled with loose leaf tea. The longer it steeps, the stronger and richer the tea flavor. Dark as night! My best dim sum is the Spinach Dumpling trio. Nice green color wraps on the outside, rich spinach filling on the inside. Why need condiments like soy sauce when my Spinach Dumplings are already tasty? Main course: a bowl of Long Life (Chow Mein) Noodles! Chow Mein has been my childhood favorite dish before the silver needle rice noodles (rat's tail). So good, that I finish the whole bowl! No need for dessert since it went passed my gift card limit. But I use it up anyway. Ehehe! *embarrassed* Overall, the way I dine in Yank Sing makes me think it's the best tea restaurant in SoMa, hands down. We were able to quickly make a reservation online for the restaurant but I think they had some free seats outside but otherwise it filled up fast and had good amount of people the whole time we were there. This place is definitely on the pricier end for dim sum in the city I'm pretty sure but it was very good. They didn't have all of the classics I remembered from when I used to go to dim sum as a kid down in South Bay but it had a good amount of them. You order at your seat and then they bring it out to you rather than them pushing the carts around. For all of their dishes they had a very good ratio of filling to bun/bone/wrap ratio. The spare ribs had a good amount of meat on each bone but they flavor wasn't really all there. The sweet rice dumping (which confusing name because it's a savory dish and isn't sweet) was nice and packed and had a really great fry to it, definitely my favorite. The stuffed lotus leaf as well was delicious with a great amount of meat along with the rice. The Har gow where jampacked with shrimp. I might try to find other cheaper places but with this place being close by and if I'm ever a little lazy I would not mind at all coming back here. read more

I'm glad that I read reviews earlier because I knew exactly what to try. We ordered several different kinds of dumplings and steamed buns, noodles, steamed spareribs, chicken satay. We dug into several dishes before I could get pictures! #TeenageBoys One of our favorites was the BBQ pork bun, but we loved everything except the steamed spareribs, which tasted ok but did not look very appealing. We finished the meal with jasmine tea, egg custard tarts, and mango pudding. It is pricey; we left with a bill for the 4 of us that was under $200 (included beer and a 20% tip). Would we return? Had a fantastic lunch here which was incredibly busy for a weekday. Process to order is simple and easy! Mark off on the menu quantities and what you want and things will just magically appear. The scallion cake is by far my favorite item, honey walnut prawns are next, chicken bun, and shumai. Their egg tarts are quite heavy and delicious! We came here on a Sunday morning for a 90th Birthday celebration for our Auntie and street parking was available (free on Sundays) and we only walked half a block to the restaurant which is in a cozy quiet alley on Stevenson Street. The celebration was held in the outdoor dining area divided by the rest of the customers with planters. There are heat lamps surrounding the outdoor area. We had seating arrangements and there was room for at least 54 people (9 tables of 6) and the food came out piping out as well as tall covered disposable cups of hot tea. We had Soup Dumplings, Pork Siu Mai, Chive Dumplings, Shrimp Dumplings, Steamed Pork Buns, Turnip Cakes, Chinese Broccoli with oyster sauce, Fried Spring Rolls, and Chicken Chow Mein! And to top it off light and fluffy Egg Custard Tarts, so yummy! Every dish was piping out when it came out to the table. Drink lots of tea as dim sum tends to be alittle rich. Even thou we were not able to make a reservation due to Father's Day but the front desk was kind enough to put down our name - the wait was about 25min. Dim sum quality was one of the best in the Bay Area. We were looking for egg tart and the waitress sent one to us right after they were baked. First of all, they do not have outdoor dining as their website and Yelp states. The dining area is large and tables widely spaced out with a very high ceiling (seems at least 10 floors high); however, I was disappointed to find that it was nonetheless indoors. Yes, it was a relatively Covid safe environment, but I believe they are conflating closed skylight windows with outdoor dining. I even asked if the windows were open and the staff said they were not. Recently enjoyed lunch with family. We made reservations and were seated immediately. The steam dumpling carts had plenty of choices and everything was piping hot. The cha siu bao was excellent! Great meat to bun ratio. The fried items while good were not hot, just sort of warm. Steamed rice noodle with pork was excellent, The long life noodles were over cooked and very bland- The restaurant has changed - they don't seen to have a bar menu. I saw beer being offers however no wines or mimosas- It was scaled down compared to years ago. I'm not sure I would return. There are quite a few places that offer better dim sum. read more

Made a reservation prior via OpenTable! Saw that they were on the Michelin guide, and wanted to try it out for myself. The food is good, and they get the basics done right. The portion sizes are perfect for dim sum, but the main pain point for me was the price- I wanted the food to wow me and go beyond my expectations, but instead the food was just good. I think the main thing you're paying for here isn't the food but the location, ambiance, and accessibility. It's located in the heart of downtown, only a few blocks away from the Westfield mall. The interior is spacious, with tall ceilings and spaced out tables. There isn't the chaos you'd expect from a typical dim sum place- it's calm and relatively quiet compared to the bustle in Chinatown. You can order on your phone via the QR code on the table, and that gets rid of the language barrier to entry for most non-Chinese speakers. The food came out steaming hot only a few minutes after ordering. And just to mention again, I was able to make a reservation prior online via OpenTable. Although this isn't as cheap as other dim sum places, the quality of the food and the overall experience dining here makes it worthwhile. Visiting Yank Sing was a nostalgic visit because the last time I visited the restaurant was definitely pre-Yelp. As I was out and about in the city I wanted to try out a restaurant that I haven't visited in a long while. Interestingly enough they require a reservation even for lunch. I was seated in a fairly small table for two. The restaurant itself was quite small and the staff definitely practised COVID prevention processes with masks and gloves. Ordering the food was fairly simple with a form you fill out. The first thing I noticed was the prices were on the high side which is why I took away one star for this review. Service was excellent and they seem to schedule the dessert portion after finishing the main dishes that were ordered. Overall the food itself was quite good and the portions were normal sized. They made a small mistake with my order giving me three portions of one item which I corrected it by referring to the original order form. I also noticed that the tea served was using actual loose tea leaves and instead of tea bags. Overall it was a good meal and service but the high prices made it a little difficult to swallow. read more

I wish there was more actual char siu bits in the bun tho, for that I felt like I was getting scammed of my $$ a bit. the char siu in the bun was also in small thin sliced rather than cubes which made the neat taste kinda dry. the bread they use isn't the traditional steam char siu bao bread, like it doesn't crack open at the top and also it's not as fluffy or sweet as the normal one. but regardless thus dish was very very good. lotus leaf wrap - this one was pretty good, nothing bad but nothing special, pretty on par with traditional flavor. also good amount of ingredients bean curd roll - this one was also really good and fresh, the bean curd on the outside was slightly crispy and the roll itself was pretty good quality and good texture and taste. PRICE - sooooo expensive but that was expected. the portion sizes don't seem that much at first bc they give less pieces, but each piece is p big so in the end we were both super full off of the things we ordered. with tax and tip our total came out to be 60 ish, which is prolly 20% more than what we would've spent at a normal dimsum place. We went to the one on the Stevenson which has limited menu. Make sure you check the place and menu before you go. Most of the Chinese places I have been to are rude, but this place is different they suggest their specials and must try items. All the dumplings are served super fast and fresh in the dumpling basket. We had chicken and mushroom dumpling it is the best overall and it tasted like a soup dumpling. Shrimp dumpling is good. Spinach dumpling is different the color of the dumpling made it very appetizing. Also the pan fried chicken buns are really good. Coming to the desserts, I recommend to skip them they are not that special. Mango pudding is made of concentrate and no fruity flavor to it. The ambience is nice, with a large patio outside (we didn't use it because even with heaters it was a bit too cold on that day). The menu is not particularly extensive but what they serve is good quality. All of the shumai we ordered was very good. The pork buns were okay -- a bit too sweet. The tea was good. The Chinese broccoli was not good -- cold and not particularly flavorful. The soup dumplings were decent (if you want really good soup dumplings then the Dumpling Home is the place to go).
