I'm going to be very honest and with very important information: restaurant deserves 4 stars but you will be disappointed if expecting an OG traditional dim sum experience. This restaurant serves higher priced dim sum with higher quality ingredients and more friendly service than your 'usual' restaurant in Chinatown. If you want a more affordable, greasy yet delicious comfort food while having to flag down aunts/uncles on staff, don't come here. Wow. Yelp is basically spot on with the 3.5*. I had a very mixed experience with Yank Sing. Came here on. Sunday around 11:30. There was a nice buzz going and we were able to get seated right away. You have both the option to order off the carts and they have some sort of digital tracking system. And there's a QR code on the table that you can order from and pay -- the food is brought to you when ready. I did a mix of both. The food is delicately portioned and mostly delicious. I am obsessed with the wonton soup, but it came out lukewarm -- I would have liked it hotter. So, why 3*? I'd rate the food 4 - 4.5*. Everything we had was well executed: siu mai, cha siu bao, lotus leaf sticky rice, phoenix shrimp, wonton soup and green beans. It comes to the portions and pricing. The delicate portioning means you can try more items. However, for how much the items are priced, a casual lunch here with the hubs and daughter clocked in at $100. So 2-3* on value averaging to 3-3.5*. Somehow, experience-wise -- if we wanna be going for a $100 lunch, I'm looking for something where the service & ambience feel special and serving temp of food is more on point. We got to Yank Sing right as they opened on a reservation and were seated pretty much immediately, and man are they fast! The food-carts have very friendly and patient service for a Dim Sum place, which we really appreciated. They took their time to walk you through everything on each cart and gave you a little sales pitch for what you might like (not pushy at all, just excited for you to try). All the dim sum was very strong, their soup dumplings were great, and it was some of the best chicken feet I've ever had. My wife doesn't eat pork or shrimp, but they had a really nice large menu of veg and chicken -- she got the veg curry dumplings and loved them so much that we got a second order. I am from San Diego and my twin lives in the city so, every time I come to the city, we come here as a treat since the prices can be a little steep for a meal. The food is always good, of the dim sum I would recommend the pork Shanghai dumplings, the crispy tofu, or the honey walnut prawns. All the deserts and teas are good, my personal favorite being the sesame balls. The restaurant is clean and well lit. The tables can be a bit close together but nothing out of the norm for San Francisco. Their outside patio area is nice and staff is quick to have you seated. Now, for the negatives of our experience. The service was difficult, exacerbated by them being busy but we noticed tables with younger patrons were neglected longer than those with older customers or families. We would go long periods with empty water glasses and dishes before someone would come to fill them/ offer more food. We also, on two occasions, had staff make comments on the amount of food we had ordered. I could understand this comment if we were ordering and not eating but only two plates had gone uneaten (them being new foods we had tried and not liked). We cleared every plate since we were excited for our trip to Yank Sing and, in return, my twin and their partner had felt embarrassed over the food we had gone to enjoy. It very much spoiled our experience and I, for one, will not be returning. There are other dim sum restaurants in the city that I can try. read more

After visiting the Modern Art Museum the girlfriend said she was hungry & in the mood for dim sum so we walked here for lunch since we were around the corner, I'd say it was about 1:30 when we sat down. We generally visit the Yank Sing on Spear St as we knew that location has the larger menu. The menu here is rather limited maybe because it is a smaller location? Perhaps it is the late hour but I thought the dim sum weren't fresh. The har gow was barely lukewarm and the pieces stuck together as though they had sat in the kitchen for a long minute. Same with the feng zhou and spare ribs. The XLB was the freshest item on the table. The service was great. I told the girlfriend we will stick to the Spear location henceforth. read more

This place is beautiful, delicious and operates like a machine. The dishes come out quickly and they have so many options to choose from. We ordered the green beans, shrimp dumplings, shrimp tempura, and some veggie noodles. The green beans were unbelievably good, so much flavor and I love the sauce they were doused in. The shrimp dumplings were also very good and they were very fresh tasting. I also loved the shrimp tempura because the shrimps were massive--they did not mess around. The noodles were a great pairing with everything we ordered and I loved the mushroom additions to it. The honey walnut shrimp was soooo good, it was the best version of honey walnut I've had. My daughter is closer to their second location on Stevenson. We got there around 1:45 PM and the place was not busy. We were seated immediately. A much smaller and more intimate setting, they still managed to have the push carts to show the variety of dim sum (which I like). We ordered something different this time, chicken and mushrooms dumplings. As usual, we ordered the Siu Mai, Har Gow, steamed BBQ pork buns. They have little carts that go around the restaurant, similar to traditional dim sum locations. The quality is extremely top notch and tastes more like "clean" Chinese food than greasy. The xiao long bao is a must try, just be careful and wait a few minutes or you might pop the dumpling. I would recommend making a reservation since they are quite booked and busy. I wouldn't recommend ordering the Peking duck bao, you only get one piece of duck and it's $7 per piece. Very busy and family friendly location. read more

The food here is OK and the service is excellent, but it is very cater towards Americans. I think reservation is necessary and early morning spot is guarantee get better view, if not you stuck on the back with less nice ambiance. Some of the best dim sum I've ever had and some of the worst service I've ever had. The good: All of the food was good and fresh. The only things I didn't like were just a personal taste preference, but everything was made well and had robust flavors. The gyoza is the best I've ever had and I lived in Japan for 10 years. The carts come around often so you'll always have full plates. The restaurant is clean and feels higher end. The not-so-good: They don't bring water unless you ask. Then you have to ask for refills. Also, most of their items are on the carts, but there's a menu where you can order things like beef and chicken dishes. It's maybe a dozen items? Anyway, for some odd reason you have to use a QR code and go to a site where you order and pay for that item. Super convoluted. It also took a long time for the food to arrive. The bad: The service. The cart waiters are very, very quick to leave your table. To give you an idea a gentleman at the table next to us leapt out of his chair to stop the waitress after she turned and left before he was finished. Their English wasn't great and they don't seem to realize that you're still looking at your options. If you mention a dish, for example asking people at your table if they want X, the waiter will put X on the table. There are just a lot of nuances they miss. We paid the tip in cash and there was no thank you or anything like that. Just took the money, turned around, and left. So....if you can handle bad service with really good food then give it a try. We're visiting family in San Francisco and ate here for lunch. This place is near the waterfront, is family owned and has been here for a long time. It is Dim Sum, so we all shared the standard fare like shrimp dumplings, steamed pork buns, soup dumplings, etc., which were all delish. We also had honey walnut shrimp, but they had an off the menu sea bass we decided to try and it was AMAZING! I used to really enjoy yank sing. There would always be an hour+ wait on Sundays with people lined down the alley. As a traditional Hong Kong style dim sum place, you'll always notice the push carts. Something so nostalgic... However, the last time that I went was kind of a bust. I thought the food quality was pretty similar to before, however, the pricing seemed too high for what it's worth. We are also talking about portions. For 3 people it was $150 for about 5 kinds of dumplings & 2 special items. We ordered the salt and pepper tofu, which was $10, and we thought we were getting a big plate. However, a tiny plate with only 12 pieces of small, bite sized tofu came out. Not authentic dim sum :( I was so excited about trying Yank Sing and especially how it was on the Michelin Guide but it was so not worth it. There is a long wait as to any dim sum restaurant but once we got seated the service was amazing. The carts kept coming around with food and the ladies were so sweet. I grew up eating dim sum and it's one of my favorite things to eat. Everything here is super not authentic. The menu is super small compared to other Dim Sum restaurants. The hai gow had the thickest skin and the sui mai was so dense. I went with my Chinese friends they weren't a big fan also. Have been looking forward to eating at this Dim Sum mainstay for quite some time. Located in the southern part of Financial District, Yank Sing is an easy lunch spot for workers nearby, or an upscale cart dim sum brunch for those with reservations and a group. We were under the expectation that the restaurant would be closer to Dragon Beaux or Palette Tea Garden in ambiance. Instead we were treated to high end service paired with a casual dim sum cart experience, with servers pushing steamed trays of goodness ready to eat. The menu is relatively small but everything is excellent. From Char siu to Xiao Long Bao, each dish is delicious, fresh and quickly delivered. Staff was quick to address any questions and everything came nearly within the minute of us being seated. Logistics: Parking near the restaurant is scarce with some private garages nearby. This is one of two locations with the other being closer to Ferry Building. Some parking garages around, but more transit, walk friendly than most restaurants. My whole team enjoyed the dim sum selections and said it was one of the best lunches we've had in downtown. I would definitely say that the long life noodles were one of my team's favorite items. This is not the style service many are used to, they roll the cart around to your table. If you're not sure by the look of the dim sum, you may not know exactly what you're ordering. There is a menu for you to read and ask for the right one. The soup dumplings were not as full or warm as I would have liked, found them disappointing. However, the scallop and shrimp dumplings WERE amazing. I'm not a fan of Pork Buns, these were perfect ratio beard to filling. Great ambiance with glass walls, can watch the crazy world go past.
