This business is in the intersection of new San Francisco and old San Francisco and it's located on Ellis street and Mason. It's called Old Siam Thai Restaurant. On a Spring stroll between the Tenderloin and the Downtown Union Square hotels such as the Hotel Nikko and Hilton Hotel which has a 46th floor aerial view of San Francisco I landed at Old Siam Thai Restaurant. When it comes to Southeast Asian cuisines the Tenderloin has it on lock . In San Francisco there is no better place to get food from Southeast Asia. There is Kin Khao and Bodega and there just less than block away from Old Siam Thai Restaurant. Inside Old Siam you will be transported to an old San Francisco feel and decor. There are hella Thai dishes on the menu like the Old Siam fried chicken and crab fried rice . When ordering I decided to stick to my Thai staples. I got the chicken yellow curry and it was savory not too spicy and had a good flavor next I decided on the Tom Kha soup with chicken and mushrooms. The taste of the broth was refreshing and not overwhelming. The Goong Hom Par also known as shrimp rolls which was okay but dipped in the sauce and it woke up my taste buds. Overall a good casual place to get some original San Francisco Thai food in the crossroads of the Tenderloin and Union Square. The pork belly was a standout and at the bottom was a bed of bean sprouts and on top was a delicious layer of the garlic chili sauce. Finally, my pickled cucumbers were a nice delightful crunch. They were a little more on the acidic side, but I can tell that's the flavor that they were going for with their pickling. I thought this was an excellent meal. We just got the hunan dumplings and "harvest pork" with white rice side. He agreed with my assumption that it's twice cooked pork. I make these all myself and I use this pork dish to rate a Chinese restaurant quality. The dumplings were basically a steamed potsticker in a plate of light soy sauce, scallion, and small red chili pieces. Slightly spicy and very average but well made and tasty. The pork was fantastic from my standpoint, mostly because I didn't have to go through the twice cooked process and it was very well done. Unfortunately it was too spicy for my wife and she couldn't eat it..... she said she likes mine better but I don't spice mine as hard in consideration for my family and just add chili sauce to my serving. Please note that there is no elevator in this restaurant. We came here for an event that had over 400 people. The food was surprising tasty. We had a table of ten and we virtually ate every scrap of food. Either it was that good or we were starving! The food on the platters we were served were not that big. The big eaters on our table finished whatever was left. Onward to the food. The fried rice looked like saffron rice - yes it was that yellow but it was delicious. They used a lot of bell peppers and onions in their dishes. The beef was very tasty and the ground pork soup was excellent. The tofu dish was cooked perfectly but there each person barely got two pieces of tofu. The fried fish was crispy and hot but you were lucky if you got two pieces. The Peking duck had no buns or hoisin sauce. Some of the pieces were lean and some were fatty. The worst dish of the night was what I would call the chicken katsu - the batter wasn't fried long enough and chicken was still raw! The red bean sesame balls were served crispy and hot out of the fryer. I enjoyed this over any red bean soup that we normally get.
