The photos honestly do not do it justice, especially for takeout. Everything arrived hot, fresh, and packed with flavor. The Mongolian beef was tender with the perfect balance of sweet and savory, the rice was cooked perfectly, and the hot and sour soup was some of the best I've had in a long time. I was fully prepared to think it was overpriced, but after eating it, I get it. The quality, portions, and flavor were all there. If you're on the fence because of the price, just go here. So I am biased here as I first ate at Henry's Hunan on my first trip to SF in college in 1986. It was the best I remember as I was really into spicy Chinese food. My buddies I drug there not as much. So this is a newer location and concept run by Henry's grandson and pretty small yet clean. My wife humored me and we opened the place up literally as he opened the doors at 11 on Sunday morning. We needed to get to the airport but I needed my Hunan fix. We just got the hunan dumplings and "harvest pork" with white rice side. He agreed with my assumption that it's twice cooked pork. I make these all myself and I use this pork dish to rate a Chinese restaurant quality. The dumplings were basically a steamed potsticker in a plate of light soy sauce, scallion, and small red chili pieces. Slightly spicy and very average but well made and tasty. The pork was fantastic from my standpoint, mostly because I didn't have to go through the twice cooked process and it was very well done. Unfortunately it was too spicy for my wife and she couldn't eat it..... she said she likes mine better but I don't spice mine as hard in consideration for my family and just add chili sauce to my serving. We were not hungry and didn't have time nor use for leftovers or we would have ordered the dry fried green beans and a noodle dish as well but I look forward to another shot earlier in a trip of eating in SF to experience more here or at the other Henry's location. This place tastes like my mom's cooking to me in the absolute best way. It has authentic Chinese home cooking vibes that you can't really find at a lot of restaurants these days. I'd recommend getting a couple different dishes and some fried rice or plain rice and just go to town! I loved the Hunan pork belly and would definitely try the smoked pork belly too. The staff was nice accommodating our large group and attending to our needs. We ordered a ton of dishes so we were constantly running out of table space. But most dishes were quite delicious. Even the vegetable fried rice was quite fragrant. Most meat dishes were great, not too salty nor gamey (nor the sweet and sour beef too sour). And the vegetables were good too. And now it is SoHunan. My recollection it was bigger but the restaurant now is small and tight. The servers were fixing the table where we can have a space for mom's wheelchair. The 4 of us finally sat down. The decor is the normal Chinese accents. We asked for hot tea first and the server came with a teakettle. The spoons given were like there are stains from being old that we did not use it. We asked the server for mild preparation. We started with Meat Pie. We also Henry's Special, Humana Dumplings, Salt & Pepper Beef w/ Hunan Pickles, Salt & Pepper Pork Ribs, and steamed rice. We ordered for mom the Fresh Egg Drop Soup. The flavors were delicious but little spicy although we asked for mild. We had to ask for more napkins as we felt our mouth was on little fire but bearable. Service was good. I was told by the server to pay the bill at the cashier. There was the automatic 20% tip for party of 5. I did not realize asking for a 2nd teakettle had a minimum charge. I was very satisfied with the Hunan cuisine offered here, as an avid fan of spicy food, everything was perfect. I also ordered some of their house tea which I found to be very enjoyable on a cold winter day. Please keep in mind that this restaurant is quite busy during dinner time, so expect a long wait for, especially if you have a large party size. I personally didn't want to wait 45 minutes to be sat, so I was able to quickly order and received my food to go within 10 minutes which was surprisingly fast. I found this spot on Yelp while I was craving Chinese food and since I love spicy dishes, Hunan cuisine felt like the perfect choice. We stopped by on a Thursday around 4pm, and it was totally empty, so we got to sit wherever we wanted. The menu had so many things that looked good, we decided to just go for it and try a bunch. We ordered the Hunan dumplings, kung pao chicken, smoked pork belly, chicken chow mein, and Hunan pork belly. The food came out fast, maybe 15 minutes tops, and every dish was delicious. Everything had a solid kick, but nothing was overwhelmingly spicy (though if you're sensitive to heat, fair warning, it might be a bit much!). If you're looking for Hunan style Chinese food, this definitely is the place to be. They have two menu, the Chinese menu and the English menu, ask for the Chinese menu because the spice level is much spicier. The restaurant is nice and clean with an upper level for additional seatings for bigger parties. Is the upper levels ada accessible? Not really, its a flight of stairs but the first floor seating should hopefully accommodate that. The staff all are very sweet and diligent. The meal has a good spice to it, enough to make you want to take a sip of water here and there. The slices of beef are soft and on the smaller side. Plenty of green onion and regular onions. As a concierge working at a luxury hotel nearby on California Street, I've been looking for some better than R & G Lounge or at least similar type Chinese restaurants within walking distance that isn't a hole in the wall. Looking for some place that I can recommend as an alternative to R & G lounge to our distinguished guests somewhere around Kearny and Sacramento Street away from the Chinatown crowds. And this is not it. Upstairs dining room is spacious and modern, but you really have to ask for it. There is no sign, only a small door. Today I asked if I could eat upstairs but he didn't really tell me where it was until a group of Chinese diners came and went straight upstairs. And then after that he told me to also check the dining room upstairs. Food was decent, smoked pork belly $17.50 + rice $3.00. It's an order and pay first type of restaurant.
