My favorite dim sum place in San Francisco is a humble place called S&T Hong Kong Seafood, at 2578 Noriega St. We've been going there for years. However, thinking it would be fun to try something different, I went on line and searched "best San Francisco dim sum," which brought up sites with recommended restaurants. The consensus was that Yank Sing in the Rincon Center was the best place in the city for good dumplings. When I saw on Yank Sing's website that they offer $4 dollar parking with validation, I was sold. There was a bonus. The Rincon Center includes the historic Rincon Annex Post Office, an Art Deco building built in 1940, now part of a complex with apartments, offices, and shops. It preserves New Deal murals by artist Anton Refregier. The post office closed in the 1980s, but the lobby with the murals is intact, integrated into the Rincon Center development. The old post office lobby is worth a look if you have any interest in New Deal art, Art Deco architecture, or the history of the US Post Office. But, back to dim sum. Yank Sing was a disappointment. It was fun to pick dishes off the circulating carts (a feature many dim sum restaurants have abandoned) and I liked the elegant glass teapots. The curry and vegetable dumplings were an unusual variation and the barbecue pork rice noodles were good, but, on the whole, I was expecting more from a restaurant with a Michelin rating. In addition, most of the offerings were not quite as hot as I would have liked (the xiao long bao buns were barely warm). The meal for two came to $138 plus tip, which I would have happily paid for a memorable experience, but, as I say, the food was mostly unexceptional. It felt quite overpriced. At S&T Seafood on Noriega, the same meal would have been about $65 and the food would have been as good or better. Additionally, S&T is always filled with Chinese families and friends speaking Cantonese, which adds to the charm (at Yank Sing, the only Asians present were working at the restaurant). Terrible service! We waited so long for the carts to come by and it wasn't crowded. We also ordered things from the wait staff that never came. Had to reorder again( waited AGAIN 25 more minutes), with no apology. Also there are specialties that were not available today even though the menu listed it. Very disappointing . As a lover of dumplings we were excited to try this place out as it was recommended by someone we know. One person in our party had been here before but prefaced that it was, "a long time ago". We had $200 worth of dim sum and it was awesome. It really is worthy of it's Michelin rating. It's a huge venue with excellent service. It's pricey, but there are other dim sum venues in the Bay Area which are equally expensive. Great place to take out-of-town guests. Highly recommended. read more

I have been using Yank Sing Rincon for my favorite dim sum location for 40 years. What was created by the founder no longer exists. My last visit with 6 guests was disappointing in quality and price. The quality is nonexistent and price for poor quality is way out of line expensive- $400 plus Dim Sum - reheated frozen type Noodles- only one selection Fish - poor excuse Sea Bass I am saddened by the apparent new owners who in no way offer what I was used to for 40 years. We don't go quite often to SFO. Normally just to get a flight to go somewhere or to pickup somebody from the airport. There are 2 Chinese restaurants that we go to (I know, need to discover more!) one is Fang and Yank Sing. I love how they still serve their dimsum the traditional way with carts going around. The quality of food has not changed throughout the years. They're still as good and still offer a wide variety. I love that you can also order Ala Carte to supplement the dimsum. The dimsum carts continuously go around throughout so you will never run out of dimsum. They're already there before you know it. However, table service for water can get a little slow when the restaurant is full and hectic. The ambience is casual. It can get a little loud, so likely not one to bring somebody for an intimate date. But great for friends and family. It is in Rincon Center which is great as you won't have problem with parking, which is usual in San Francisco. There is a parking garage in the building and they validate. read more

Amazing dim sum. Came here for lunch on a weekday with coworkers. Made a reservation for three the same day. I didn't think I needed a reservation for a Thursday lunch but I would recommend making one. It was very busy. We tried so many items. I think our favorite was a salt and pepper pork, the green beans and something that came wrapped in a long rice noodle. I went a little overboard on dessert. We had the sesame balls, egg custard and a mango custard. The mango custard was my favorite. Everything was so fresh and tasty. The service is attentive for dim sum. You can easily flag someone down if you want a specific item that you're not seeing rolling on the carts. Price was reasonable for bougie dim sum in San Francisco. I'm sure there are better spots in the Bay Area that are more hole in the wall. I don't think I have any photos of the food because we were all so focused on eating everything delicious. We came around 1pm on a Wednesday. The place was packed with people (some business folks, some families, others looked like a fun little meet up of retired friends. But there were at least a dozen tables open, so we got sat promptly. Atmosphere seemed welcoming at first, but once we sat down, we felt like we were forgotten. No one came by with food/carts, no one offered us anything else to drink other than someone with a cart full of water when we first sat down. Eventually, we were able to flag down one cart. The lady was nice enough to get us started with steamed shrimp rice rolls, but there wasn't enough for 2 orders. She said she will circle back. She came back about 20 mins later with the second serving. We also successfully flagged down another cart as they were rolling by. We grabbed a few fried items and asked if she could help us find the usual suspects like har gao and siu mai. She said she will try. They came about 25 mins later after I was able to make eye contact from across the room at this point, we had to run out to reload parking meter because max time was an hr and we were getting close. Here's what ya'll probably came for: the food rating. Just rating what we were able to try... disappointed that many items were unavailable. Xiao long bao: 4/5 - surprisingly not bad. Juicy inside, a little small, wrapper was a tad dry. Steamed shrimp rolls: 4/5 - hard to go wrong. Not a fan of the cilantro inside, though. The football-shaped fried item: 3/5 - oily and very little filling. Just alright. Fried gyoza: 3/5 - very greasy. But at least the filling had a decent amount and was juicy. Har gao: 2/5 - a bit tough and over-steamed. Xiu mai: 0/5 - should've trusted the reviews. They were dry, over-steamed, and tasted terrible. Tiny... and stuffing was chewy. Whatever that orange topping thing was on top... I took it off - it just looked unappealing. We ordered 2 orders, ended up not finishing. Steamed pork bun: 5/5 - had to request from kitchen. 2 larger baos with generous fillings. Would've ordered more but I was just ready to get the hell out. We came to this location as it has the better rating than the other one and is closer to Chinatown. There is no Chinatown aspect to this place as it is located in an office building with tight parking. We came on the weekend, so parking was free with validation for the first 3 hours. We had to circle the building and the underground lot for some time before finding a tiny spot that my wife had to get out of the car for me to fit into. Now that we were in with our reservation, seated immediately, it's time to eat! They had carts and the inside felt old school wedding ready. It was fancy, but old fancy. There are some items that you have to order through the QR code on the table, like the honey walnut prawns, which we got and were pretty good even though the portion was small. They also got our party a high chair, but it took a little time. From the carts, the shrimp chow fun was good and the sauce the right boldness. The soup dumplings were good as well, not great though and it is unique in my experience that a cart place would offer soup dumplings in its offering. I use to frequent this place for years for its delicious dim sum . Years later dim sum is available almost everywhere and even cheaper ( then there is convenience store dim sum). The competition for good dim sum is what keeps small businesses thriving all around San Francisco with lots of places offering dim sum somewhere on their menu. Inside the Rincon Center ( part historical art museum , part offices , and post office) is Yank Sing 2. This now award wining restaurant ( not surprised) has always kept its traditional cooking and adding modern day adjustments. I always enjoy having their dumplings for years and wanted to revisit it again . I decided to order the chicken and mushroom dumplings. This dumpling has a good combination of savory mushroom and chicken. It has a fresh tasty smooth texture. Then there is my favorite shrimp dumpling . This is my staple go to anytime I am at Yank Sing. There is a kick in this shrimp dumpling maybe a broth juice flavoring ( still trying to figure it out). This Yank Sing location is bigger and more spacious than the 49 Stevenson location . I always enjoy coming here for the ambiance and food. What an absolute delight. I haven't had dim sum in probably 20 years (hard to find many vegan options) and when this place was recommended we jumped at the opportunity. It did not disappoint! The dumpling wrappers were thin with the perfect amount of chew, fillings flavorful, and tons of vegan options. Staff was super helpful, too. This location still uses carts, which was lovely. The food is alright, nothing outstanding. personally I don't think it's worth the high prices since there are so many other dimsum spots here in SF. The ones that stood out to me were the shu mai, pork bun and steamed spare ribs, they were seasoned and cooked quite nicely and were pretty good. The rest were just alright, it kind of tasted a bit bland (especially the stuffed lotus leaf, it was 70% rice and not enough filling). One thing I will say is that the ambience is quite nice. It wasn't very full when we came in and the place was clean, the servers were tentative, and the decor was quite nice. I wouldn't come back here again. As an SF native, Yank Sing holds a special place in my heart. However, my visit today was extremely disappointing. Food - 3.5/5 Food was pretty good but not worth the price that they charged. At least with other upscale dim sum places, their dim sum and plating are fancy and have new twists so it feels like they try to justify their prices. The dim sum here was traditional but like something you can get from a takeout dim sum place for a fraction of the price. Secondly, there was very little variety. For example, they only have one type of steamed buns. No custard buns. No lava buns. Just bbq pork buns. That is incredibly odd to me considering that steamed buns are such a staple dim sum item. Also, none of their items contain beef so I sadly missed my beef cheung fun. The lack of variety in dim sum items left us very unsatisfied. Service - 3.5/5 I love that they still have the push carts. The staff was friendly and nice but the carts took a very long time to come by our table. Only special items can be ordered via QR code so we sat without food for a long time. It also took 20 minutes to get our tea pot refilled with hot water. This was on a weekday when the place was full so I imagine it being worse on a packed weekend. Parking - 3.5/5 Street parking around this area is a nightmare. Luckily, they validate parking at the Rincon Center Garage. With validation, parking is $4 on weekdays but complimentary on weekends. The parking entrance is on Spear Street, just past Penelope's Coffee. The garage is tiny and hard to navigate though so beware if you have a large car. Sadly, this will likely be my last time visiting Yank Sing unless I hear that the menu changes or expands. read more

Came here on a Saturday around noon. Lots of people inside eating but we were seated right away. They were pushing carts around and you can order from the carts. There are some items/drinks that you must order through the QR code/app site. We ordered: -shrimp dumplings -shrimp noodle rolls -siu mai (pork and shrimp inside) -fried shrimp thing -bok choy Overall it was good. Everything was tasty but I think for the shrimp dumplings and siu mai the texture of the wrappers are very different than most other dim sum spots that I go to. Not bad, but I prefer how other places have a softer texture. Taste of everything was good, I like their chili oil sauce a lot. Prices: expect SF prices, every item here costs way more than what you'd pay elsewhere (I live in the east bay) but it's also downtown SF so it's to be expected. I liked this place but I don't think I'd go out of my way again to eat here, only if I was in the neighborhood. Service was nice as well. Yang Sing has two restaurant locations which is great. The last time we came it was very crowded and it seemed a lot better regarding crowd size and wait time. There was only two of us, so we ordered only a few items - but there was a small selection to start with. The good news - Yang Sing still does cart style where you can see the food and then order from the cart. The even better news is that instead of stamping a piece of paper, everything is done electronically. An improvement opportunity for them, allow you to view what you've ordered to date from the QR code (right now, it allows you to order special items that are not on carts like noodles, fried rice and other specialty dishes). So we ordered the following: * Hao Gao (shrimp dumpling) - it was 3.5 out of 5. Best is still at Good Luck dim sum. It was smallish, but still flavorful and perfect thickness to the wrapping. * Tofu wrapped with port - it was 3 out of 5. Not enough veggies - usually has Wood Ear mushrooms but this one did not - it was meatier because of less veggies. BUT, still tasty. * Shanghai dumpling (siu lung bao) - it was 2.5 out of 5. Not juicy enough....and smallish in size for the price. We should never order these at dim sum places and if you're craving this type of dumpling - go to a restaurant that specializes in them. * Snap peas with chili sause - it was a 4 out of 5. Very sweet, refreshing and tasty . * Steamed pork pun - it was a 3.5 out of 5. Not the best in the City, but the filling was good and the BBQ pork was not fatty - so pretty good. Good size - a bit larger than what you expect from Dim Sum. * Pea Sprout dumpling - it was a 5 out of 5 - probably our favorite dim sum because it was generous with pea sprout minced very finely mixed with meat. Very tasty. * Egg Custard - for dessert - it came with 4 custards. Very flaky and buttery (maybe too buttery). The custard was not too sweet but thicker than what I'm used to. It was a 3 out of 5. Overall, enjoyed trying a different dim sum place than I usual place - but be prepared to pay premium. Nice to do once in a while, but not every weekend dim sum place. $50/person for tab (before tip) is pretty expensive (considering the items that we got above). read more

The food is literally piping hot whether it's from the rolling steam tables or from the kitchen. The salt and pepper tofu is a must as are the steamed buns. This dim sum place is very popular among both locals and tourists. Best to make reservations on weekends cause the wait can get pretty long. Most dim sum places don't use carts to pass food on anymore ever since pandemic. It's great to be able to experience dim sum in traditional way! Loved the stylish tea pots! The varieties on the menu were smaller than other places we have tried in the city. But they had all the classic dim sum fare that's for sure. The flavors were one of the best and the service was great. The xiaolongbao was very delicious, I find the Cantonese restaurants in the city make soup dumplings surprisingly well. I look at this place as an upscale dim sum restaurant that's worth visiting whenever we are in SF city! read more

This was my first in-person visit to Yank Sing in many years. Some things had really changed, which I knew, like the fountain, that always added to the ambiance in the courtyard area is long gone. It was also perhaps my first time sitting in the "outside" area, rather than inside the main restaurant, closer to the kitchen. Yank Sing now offers some items for QR code ordering from the table as well, but none of the items that are on the cart can be ordered that way. If you want cart items, e.g. the traditional dim sum, you just have to wait. Service was pretty neglectful. We were seated as far away from the kitchen as it gets, and carts rarely made it our way. And then they did? Not much left, and nothing warm. We had to aggressively ask for carts to be sent our way at one point when it had been 20 minutes without seeing any, and we had an empty table. Being in the outside seating area really is not recommended. I did order my old favorites from a server, the snow pea shoot dumplings, but they never arrived. Chinese Broccoli with Oyster Sauce. $9.50. Ah, the Chinese broccoli. The token vegetable that we do always seem to get, no matter who I go with. As always, it was fine. Exactly as expected. Steamed, light oyster sauce on top, served cold. It is what it is. Low 3/5. Shanghai Kurobuta Pork Dumpling. $16. The XLB were underwhelming. Mostly they clearly weren't fresh. I grabbed one and risked trying it immediately, and it was barely lukewarm. Being the first to grab one is supposed to be such a gamble, with the hot soup bursting into your mouth after all ... The wrapper was nice, soft and pliable, and it had a good amount of soup inside, but just not fresh. 3/5 Shrimp Dumpling. $9.50. The har gow was a good dumpling. Still not very warm, and not great or exceptional, but good. The wrapper was a bit thick, but it was loaded with big juicy succulent pieces of shrimp. My favorite item this visit. 3.5/5 Seafood Basil Dumpling. $9.50. Wow, I really didn't care for this. The wrapper was gummy. The wrapper was too thick. The filling was minced seafood that tasted a touch fishy, and wasn't very juicy or succulent like the har gao. I didn't even want the second bite of mine. Worst dish I had. Steamed BBQ Pork Bun. $7.50. The steamed bbq buns I thought were fine when I got takeout last year, so I tried one again. Our server nicely cut them in half for us. The buns were again fine. Soft and fluffy bun, decently saucy bbq pork filling. Reasonable amount of filling. Fine, but not special, and again, I couldn't help but think it could come from anywhere, including any random hotel buffet. 3/5. Phoenix Tail Prawn. $16. The Phoenix tail prawns were a first for me! My old dim sum group never really ordered fried items (it wasn't until I attended an event with the spring rolls and potstickers that I ever tried those common items!), so I just never encountered these before. I did really like the other fried items I had from Yank Sing though, even for event catering, so I was happy to try these. Like everything, they weren't hot. The dumplings at least held a little heat in the steamer baskets with lids on, but these were just sitting on plates on the cart, and were not even slightly warm. But they were nicely crispy, and had a big juicy prawn inside. I later saw they came with a special dipping sauce, but I didn't get it with mine. This was fun to try, and something very different. Definitely a heavier, heartier item, and I'd consider it again, although it made me wish I had seen the crab claws go by, as they are a similar item, and even more my style. 3.5/5 We finished with all 4 of the desserts. It was the birthday for one guest, and the restaurant actually put a candle in the middle of the platter, a cute touch. Because they brought these direct to us, as a bonus, these items were all actually appropriately warm and fresh! Sesame ball: These really are good sesame balls. Egg Custard Tart. The egg custard tarts were also good, and served appropriately warm. The crust was buttery and flaky, and it made a mess, in the same way a good French pastry does. The filling was well set, not too eggy, and lightly sweet. Like most Asian desserts, not quite as sweet as my American brain wants a dessert to be, but still quite enjoyable. 3.5/5. Mango Pudding. $8. It had been a looong time since I last had this! Brought back memories. It was enjoyable - good mango flavor, creamy, nice texture, and I loved the cubes lurking within. Decent place for dim sum pushed around in carts. The shrimp dumpling (ha gow) was meaty but on the plain side. The bbq pork rice roll was very enjoyable as was the pork and shrimp dumpling (siu mye). Both with plenty of filling and flavor. The xiao long bao (soup dumpling) was average with a skin thin enough to prevent the soup from spilling out. The menu selection was smaller than other dim sum restaurants in the bay area, but it did have a wider range of alcoholic options. It's a classic spot, but it's really fallen off over the years due to popularity. My family and I used to come here all the time for dim sum, but now we're looking for a new go-to spot because of Yank Sing's decline. Yank Sing has always been known as a more upscale/ pricier dim sum spot in the city. It drew a lot of attention because the quality and authenticity were unmatched, and there would always be long waits, especially on the weekends. However, these past couple of times, not only has the service been slow and dismissive, but the quality of the dim sum doesn't taste the same as before. Not only do we have to constantly flag down carts, but they often don't open seating inside the actual restaurant so that they're able to serve more people. When that's the case, you're sitting outside in an indoor plaza surrounded by way too many people. It's hard to justify paying the hefty price when you can just grab dim sum to-go in Chinatown. read more
