This place was super disappointing. I saw it when I was heading to Lambda and decided to grab a cake before heading back home. I went in at 7pm, there were still lots of cake selections to choose from. I got a piece of the Napoleon cake. It was not good at all. It didn't taste fresh. The inside was supposed to be flaky and crispy like a waffle. Unfortunately, it didn't taste like that at all.It was mushy and chewy in the center. They added a lot of icing sugar to make it sweet and attempted to make it fancy looking. But that is just add on that I can go to any grocery stores and get and put it on any cake. the top 2 cracker pieces were not crispy at all. It was super chewy like it has absorbed a lot of moister that it is no longer fresh. I am not sure if they made the cake the night before or if it has been sitting for days unsold in the fridge. I have had way better cake before. The piece of cake was not worth $3.99. Note that this place is ran by Chinese and sells Hong Kong style cake. They do not make French pastries or cakes. They are also not a Japanese cake store. I have been to France and Japan and no their cakes don't look even close like their cakes. I will not be back and will not recommend coming here. For special occasions, my family and I used to always get cakes from this pastry shop, but recently, I've noticed that the service has become incredibly unpleasant and unsatisfying. We're going to start ordering from the place where we used to buy cakes since they have excellent service, and we won't be ordering from somewhere where a regular paying customer is getting yelled at for just clarifying what they want. This place has the best mango cake! It is only sold during mango season to ensure the mangoes are good and fresh. The lady that helped us (I believe she is the owner) was super friendly. This is my go-to mousse cake bakery that I've been going to for over 10 years. Their mango mousse is what got me hooked in the first place. The parents always love them because their cakes are not too sweet. My other favourite flavours are raspberry lychee and durian pistachio mousse cake. read more

Mmmm dessert. A cozy little spot with parking in the back, even though it is on a main street it manages a very quite calm atmosphere. There's only a 4 table seating area, but it's always quiet inside on my visits. They have a selection of 'japanese style' cakes, which come in a very many light mousse flavors. (The mousse is light but the flavors are amazing). They use real fruit juices to get the fruit flavors! I've tried everything from green tea to blueberry lychee to white chocolate passion fruit to mango, and all are a big hit. Japanese cheese cake is my personal favorite, because until traditional cheese cake it doesn't leave you bloated but still rich in taste. Have not had a dissappointing visit thus far, and still remains my favorite place for a treat. They also serve lattes and coffees/teas to go along with the sweet treats. read more

Yamato's is located on center street, just off of 16th ave. It is a cozy little cafe with serves cakes, coffee, and other little bakery sweets. It is a bit cramped and cluttered inside, but has room for you to sit down and enjoy their cake pieces. It is relatively quiet. Apart from that, the cakes I've had here are extremely satisfying. About 4/5 years ago, I bought a tiramisu cake from them for my dad's birthday. It was delicious. They have a very unique style of baking. They tend to have more of a Japaneses style cheese/mousse cake. The cakes are always full of flavour with just the right touch of sweetness. I am not a fan of your typical Co-op, Safeway, or Superstore cakes because I find them extremely sweet. Recently, my friend bought me a huge durian cake from them, and it was honestly to die for. I also recently bought the same tiramisu cake from them for my dad's birthday and it was definitely satisfying. Overall, I'd have to say this is one of my favourite place for cake. I came in about thirty minutes to closing, and all of the cases were empty! But after a minute, an older Chinese man came out to reassure my cousin and I that they still had everything--just name it, he'll bring it! So we got a Japanese Cheesecake and Green Tea Cheesecake. I ate the Japanese Cheesecake that night with my cousin. The cheese flavor is very, very light; it tasted more like a regular Asian cake... Fluffy and fruity. I left the Green Tea Cheesecake in the fridge for two days. My bad! I forgot. The green tea flavoring came out once in awhile if you concentrated really hard, but otherwise it tasted much like a coffee cake. I feel like this is only due to me leaving it in the fridge for two days, though... It would probably have a stronger green tea taste when fresh. This place has gone down hill. Especially from the customer service from the owner herself. There's only so much cake you can serve with that nasty, fobby attitude. During times like this when businesses are losing customers due to the pandemic, you would think that this lady would change her attitude towards every customer that places an order. I'll be honest with you the cake isn't even that good. I just had to place a last minute order through door dash to get it delivered. The quality of cake isn't even the same anymore. So it's a downer that there isn't much goodness within this bakery anymore. Def will never be ordering from this place again. If even I had to. In a delicious post-sushi haze from the nearby Shikiji restaurant, we decided we needed some dessert to top off the night. Enter Yamato dessert cafe, a fairly unassuming little dessert bar tucked away in a strip mall on Centre Street a few blocks north of downtown. We walked down and were greeted by the cheery owner and a display case full of cute little asian style cheesecakes, mousses and the wafting smell of sweet desserts. The flavours were varied but all delicious sounding, with white and milk chocolates, green teas and exotic fruits like mango and lychee. A friend swears by the strawberry lychee cheesecake, but I decided to indulge in the strawberry white chocolate cheesecake... to go. It was scrumptious. For those not familiar with asian-style cheesecakes, they are much lighter than the average new york style cheesecake. The texture is similar to a mousse with a strip of white cake in the middle and the flavours tend to be lighter and the cheese taste is also much lighter. The cafe itself is pretty small but cute, and you can sit in and enjoy and drink and some dessert or take it to go. You can also order whole cakes to go. Delicious. read more

This is a little cozy cafe on north centre street. Consumed a green tea red bean mouse cake and a regular coffee. The cake was delicious. It had that Hong Kong bakery taste to it. There are few tables in the establishment so it's very small, but some may like the mom and pop cafe feel. Could be a good alternative to going to a Starbucks or Tim Horton's. It's very quiet here, which can make it easy to have a face-to-face conversation where you might be the only people in the place. While eating my cake three people came in to order cakes for special occasions. I might give them a try next time I need a celebratory cake. My feeling is that this is their speciality. read more

There's a wide range of selections for cakes, you can order a whole cake for pick up or a slice to eat inside. I saw the decent reviews for this place and decided to try it. I'll never go back again. The pastries are not fresh here, but they charge like it is fresh. They literally pull their cakes from a freezer. The service was awful too, he really didn't want to do business and didn't even have eye contact. Just wanted to get us in and out. I used to come to this place primarily because of its independently-owned charms. It is located on a busy street swarmed by crowded transnational coffee shops, so it is a nice little hideaway for timely service and delicious food. Here, they serve a multitude of different slices of cake (floating around a price of $3.55 per slice) and although some may consider this pricey, the cake is home-made and the owners even take the time to top it with a side of mango and chocolate syrup. I am absolutely addicted to the white chocolate strawberry cheesecake, which is a a delicious strawberry cheesecake topped with white chocolate and a few fresh fruits. In addition to many different and delicious desserts, they also serve small appetizers such as chicken wings and Vietnamese subs. I also thoroughly enjoy the iced green tea drink which is slushy, cold and strangely addictive! The owners here are polite and friendly, there is also a bathroom located in the cafe. This is a great place for discreet meet-ups as each time I have visited there has only been at the most two other guests in the cafe. I would definitely recommend this cafe to anyone who enjoys eating in peace and quiet, or who needs a secret location for a discreet meet-up. read more
