A work colleague introduced me to the Brûlée Bakery on a nicely warm and sunny Saturday morning. We were walking down Electric Avenue, when she made a hard turn at an unmarked door and then hard left to downstairs. Upstairs was a cooking store and school, with the Metrovino Wine Shop farther through. She knows of this place as she lives in this general area and the next door spa she goes to serves Brûlée Bakery goods to their customers.. Her first reaction when I started asking for details of this place was "Don't write this place up on Yelp!" Too Late, as the secret of this wonderful little bakery is already out. I ordered a pecan roll that was the best warm and sweet piece of baked goodness that I had enjoyed in a very long time. And if actually lived in Calgary, I would be back often for the breads and the various tempting examples of Le Gâteau Élégant. I was so impressed that later in the afternoon, I circled back by myself and snagged a few breakfast scones for the next day and after. It was all good to the very last crumb.

I was walking down the street thinking about mundane things like how to better organize my closet and suddenly I felt like I was in a cartoon. You know when a cartoon bear is walking along and suddenly a smell cloud wanders through the air and he sniffs and follows it until he spots an amazing picnic through the bushes? It was JUST like that. Except the scent cloud in this case consisted of heavenly, cinnamon sugar. I followed my schnoz to this bakery establishment and the warm cookies tasted just like the air had smelt. Ambrosia! I have since ordered cakes from here and this is where Brûlée shines for me (as I don't just drop in to sample goods often). I have loved every cake I have purchased (and received lots of compliments on the choices) but my heart truly beats for the Ganache. Mmmm, in my dreams every fridge would open to left-over fried chicken and Brûlée chocolate cake...

Hidden gem alert! This place is fantastic! Seriously you guys, if you want a special treat or you just feel overly indulgent this is place to go. It's a tiny little bakery on 10th where everything is made fresh! There are tons of gluten free options, but since it was my birthday I opted for a mini-cheesecake with fresh fruit on it. My favorite part; the gooseberry on top. You see I have an odd obsession with gooseberries, I think they are fantastic and could eat them all day long! I brought my creamy delicious treat back to the office to snack on during the afternoon and it was even more delicious than I expected. This tiny bakery really out does itself, the melt in your mouth goodies are seriously worth it. They don't have a huge selection but that's what makes it unique - it's not overdone, and frankly it kind of reminds me of a European bakery or something you would find in New York which just makes it that much more desirable. Calgary has a lot of great cafes with baked goods but this place really trumps them all!

Mmmm... an underground bakery. Literally. Brulee dwells in the basement half of one of the buildings on 11th Ave. The first time I visited was to buy myself a piece of birthday cake. The second time, to buy a friend a piece of birthday cake. I was that impressed with my own piece. It's no wonder Brulee has such a good reputation--your dessert is baked and dressed to impressed with copious amounts of TLC in every bite. The cheesecake is next on my list to try as suggested by Gimlet B, but you'll be pretty safe with anything in there... unless of course you're looking to avoid satisfying your sweet tooth. In that case, run.

I got the chocolate Ganache cake for my 30th birthday and I loved it. The cake was decorated with fresh flowers and it was super tasty. I believe it's one of the best in town.

The cake before the big cutting!

See all

Best lemon slice I have had, and I am a lemon slice/tart/square lover. Open Tues-Sat so plan ahead. I will be going back soon.

It's a small bakery and not that easy to find, but it worth looking for. The service is great, and I really like their chocolate ganache

Simply the best food! My personal favourite would be the peanut butter mousse cups.

Literally THE BEST cake I've ever had. Pink princess cake was so pretty I didn't want to cut into it. But so glad I did, it was so good...

Just Cake It

Bleh! Cake tasted like it was made from cake mix in a box and not from scratch. I've always had…read morefondant cakes but hers was the driest that me and my guests tasted. It was embarrassing! * The main issue: she messed up the color of the cake character (black instead of blue) even though I sent her photos of the character. My photos say it all! Even Pinterest would show that Pete the Cat is BLUE, not black! My son didn't recognize the cake topper at all and to think it was his birthday cake! My guests thought it was Felix the Cat, too! I had no choice but to make a joke about it. I also wanted red, white, blue and brown shoes on the cake. But NO white shoes. She did incorporate my request for strawberries, blueberries and musical notes. But that's about it. She told me I should've specified that the cat is blue, not black. So it's MY fault then??? She said she did her research, right? It would have been nice if she double checked with me about the character color while she was making the cake. She offered some discount for a future cake but instead I asked for a small refund since I was just visiting Calgary but she refused, claiming "that the cake you received was as requested." How can it be AS REQUESTED when she didn't get the character color right??? If one really intends to satisfy her customers, wouldn't she do anything to make things right at least?? The only 2 good things (hence the 2 stars) were that we had a cake on my son's birthday and it did look good on pictures except for the black cat. For sure, I won't be ordering from her in my future visits to Calgary and for sure won't recommend her to my friends as well. She said I was the first one to complain about her cake. Well, I hope that she buys herself the book Customer Satisfaction for Dummies (if there is one) and takes the minutest cake details to heart so that I will be her last dissatisfied customer as well.

Great cakes. She never disappoints with both the quality of the art and the taste of the cake…read more Her cakes have been so good that many of our friends are now regular customers. I will always remember the look on my son's face after he ate the custom made cupcake on his birthday. Rather, I'll never forget how much cake he had on his face as he couldn't open his mouth wide enough to get it in as quickly as he wanted. Strongly recommend.
