I found a piece of hair in this Swiss roll.

I found a hair in this Swiss roll and I called to tell them , but the owner didn't care. It was so disgusting. I threw everything out in that same box. I would never go back or recommend this place to anyone. Their pastries are overpriced. Please don't go there.

Mango mousse cake, pina colada mousse cake, Blackberry mousse cake, banana chocolate cups, tiramisu ball. $21.00 for 7 pastries.

Excellent pastry shop tucked in a little strip mall along NW Centre Street. I appreciate the location of this pastry shop because you can purchase excellent quality desserts without having to drive across the city and go downtown where most French inspired pastry shops are often located. You must try the tiramisu pastry ball, hands down my favourite dessert there. The fruit flavoured mousse desserts are elderly/Asian friendly because my 90 year old grandma often enjoys treats that are easy on the tummy, light and not heavy tasting and, "not too sweet" (Bonus points in my books.) The prices ranges between $3.00-$5.00, which is affordable for delicate, high quality pastries. You can tell that a lot of work and effort is put into the detailing and design of their goodies! My money is well spent for the effort and quality, as I would never be able to make these masterpieces myself!

A slice of their Strawberry Vanilla Cake, looks almost too good to eat!

Orchid Pastry is the best kept secret in the NW. Hidden amongst the most unassuming of strip shops along Centre St and 64th, you wouldn't know you passed by quite possibly the best Pastry Shop in town if you were driving by. This sweet shop prepares exquisite hand made French/Persian delights from pastries, to bake goods and even cakes. You can order a box of sweets, cake slices, and other sugary delectables. Cakes will need an order as they prepare them on an order basis although they do have smaller log cakes. What I love about the sweets here is that Orchid Pastry's technique is different from nearly every other shop in town: their desserts are not overly sweet but still incredibly delicious, the cakes/slices are moist and not powdery dry, and they use fresh, real ingredients. Just one bite of anything and you'll taste what I'm talking about. I should also mention that customer service is always solid here, it's always kind, courteous service with a smile. Keep in mind that with this level of quality comes an acceptable premium in price. These aren't your safeway or superstore cakes so be prepared to drop a fair amount on these desserts/cakes if you're thinking about ordering one for a party (you should be thinking of / making up an event that calls for one of these delights -- "60 hour work week celebratory cake, anyone?"). Final word about this place: get up, drive here, try their sweets, and spread the word so that Orchid Pastry is no longer Calgary's best kept secret!

Yikes... working so close to Orchid Pastry is a health hazard! Tucked away in the corner of a strip mall, you would never know this charming Persian bakery existed. I especially enjoy Orchid's pastries because they are not overly sweet and light. My favourite items to get are their variety boxes (about $15-$20) that contains 3 vanilla jelly rolls, 3 cappuccino jelly rolls, and either 3 napoleons or 3 tiramisu. They also make baklava, canoli, puddings, and a variety of Persian cookies. The sponge cake of the jelly rolls are moist with a light cream filling. So far, the napoleons are the best ones I've had, with flaky puff pastry and a whipped vanilla custard-like cream. The tiramisu is also in my category of favourites, with moist layers of coffee soaked cake surrounded by a light chocolate cream. The cookies are about $1.60/each or cheaper for half a dozen or dozen (~$10). Highly recommend any of their buttery shortbread cookies especially the fruit filled sandwich ones or walnut with icing sugar. Other baked items to try are the: chocolate wafer; berenj (Persian rice cookie) with poppy seeds; and this chewy almond sandwich cookie with vanilla that looks and has a texture of a macaron. If you're in the area, stop by Orchid Pastry for delectable pastries and cakes. Definitely will not disappoint!

Should you not want to venture all the way downtown for your pastry, this is the place to try. I've been twice and the service has been courteous and efficient each time, the staff are friendly and patient should you take some time to decide (such as in my case). The macaroons are not melt in your mouth amazing quality, however their cream puffs and other pastries are definitely something to try. It's not too pricy and they do offer a quality catering service. However, the shop is smaller on the inside and not good for more than 4-5 customers at a time. There is no outdoor or indoor seating-more of a grab and go experience.

I felt the need to venture down the rabbit hole and explore this foreign store with the exotic name when it caught my attention one day. I asked myself, "Was this always here?" I walked in and chatted with the lady behind the counter. She was the sous-pastry chef and they've been around since 2009. They recently made the sign bigger (I guess bigger IS better!! Lol. It worked on me.) The inside is decorated in French classic style with a cute chandelier and trimmings. The atmosphere already screams, "TAKE MY MONEY!". The display case may look small but it's full of tasty French delights. I always pick up a piece of German Chocolate Cake, their signature Rollets and Tiramisu. Now I know who to blame when my skinny jeans won't fit me anymore. The sous-pastry chef informed me they use real fresh cream in all their pastries, nothing processed. You can definitely taste their craftsmanship: the desserts are light and fluffy with the perfect amount of sweetness. The price is $3.50/pastry but it drops to $3/pastry when you buy 6. It's not cheap, but you get what you pay for: outstanding quality. They also do cakes for any occasion and recently started doing wedding cakes. I wish I discovered Orchid Pastry much sooner. It's a neighborhood gem, and is worth stopping by if you're in the area. They're so good, they're gonna make muffin tops of us all!!! Hahahaha!!

Bite size Cappuccino cake, jam pastry and chocolate wafer

Orchid is a classy Persian pastry shop tucked into the corner of a less than classy strip mall. You would never know it's there unless you're really looking, but not knowing about it is a shame, which is how I felt when I walked in the door for the first time today. The owner said it's been open for three years. If you have someone to impress, Orchid will do so with its pastry presentation alone. I ended up choosing three items to sample and spent $4. Not bad, as these pastries are somewhat elaborate. The jam pastry I chose was made with raspberry, so the taste and texture reminded me of the jam jams that my grandma used to make, but fancier. The chocolate wafer was good too, but less sweet than I was expecting. Sort of like Tiramisu. The Cappuccino bite size cake looks like a cupcake, but it's not. It was very spongy and I should have used a fork to eat it. It also wasn't overly sweet but had all the right tastes for a coffee-flavored desert without being overwhelming. For an extreme sweet tooth like myself, these deserts didn't quite satisfy, but they are very good. I imagine that other treats have more sugar. I'm tempted to return for a log cake (they look amazing) or maybe even custom order a birthday cake. The website is also simple and classy, which is nice. Here you can see they have a few other interesting desserts and a second location at the Calgary Farmer's Market.

OMG ......the pastry here are amazing. My boyfriend surprised me with a variety pack filled with four different type of pastries. Each one look way too pretty to eat. The tiramisu here is one of the best I've had. Really light and fluffy with a perfect amount of coffee flavour. The jelly rolls were soft and fluffy; not overly sweet. I definitely will be going back.

Variety pack with 3 Neapolitan rollets, 3 cappuccino rollets and 2 pistachio napelonis.

Ever since we had kouign amann almost a decade ago in a French patisserie in Quito, Ecuador of all…read moreplaces, my husband has been on the hunt for the best kouign amann wherever we travel. The bad news is, there is no good kouign amann in Seattle or anywhere in the western US (so far, by our calculations). The fantastic news is that there IS stunningly delicious kouign amann in Calgary! I first balked at La Boulangerie because I had bookmarked two other bakeries to try. But I'm so glad we came here. Walking up to the storefront, I took in the quaint outdoor tables and the people enjoying a coffee and brunch. The first language I heard outside was French, which only added to the idea that we were in the right place. It wasn't busy when we walked to the counter at an off hour during the week, but I could see this place being slammed on a nice weekend. Do yourself a favor and take the time to look at all of the treats in the case. I had no idea which one to pick, but I'm so happy I went with the pear marzipan croissant - something I wouldn't easily be able to find at home. The savory breakfast crepes were tasty but could have been enhanced by a sauce on the side - the ingredients inside were a little dry. The Nutella latte was AH-MAZE-ING. Sweet, hazlenutty, but not overpowering. I immediately looked up a recipe for a future attempt to recreate it at home. The standout by far was the kouign amann, which comes in more than one flavor (insert mind blown emoji here). My husband chose a vanilla-filled one. Holy lamination. The layers, the glaze, the crunch. The vanilla cream filling was somehow both fluffy and delicately flavored yet sturdy enough to survive a day in the car. If I could fly back to Calgary every weekend just to buy a single kouign amann from this place, I would. Service was wonderful and we were surprised that that instead of calling our number, the staff walked each component of our order out to us. Highly recommend. Please visit and fulfill all your kouign amann fantasies!
