Strawberry ice cream with chunks of strawberries
Cherryll C.

We visited Calgary for a day, went to the Calgary Tower and craved for a cold treat. I yelped the closet ice cream shop from the Tower and it led me to Village Ice cream. It was about a 10-15 minute walk. I got a scoop of strawberry ice cream, my husband and daughter got the Melted Chocolate flavor. They were both creamy and tasty! No wonder a lot of people come here for a treat. This place is highly recommended!

Hands down some of the best ice cream I've ever had - from a pricepoint, taste/texture, and flavor offerings, Village Ice Cream is top tier. Got their Earl Grey and seasonal Rhubarb Crumble and wow, both flavors were phenomenal. Super creamy, strong flavors, and a great scoop size! If you're in Calgary, this place is a MUST. They offer normal and kids sized scoops, indoor and outdoor seating, and even pints. Samples are allowed!

Great ice cream!! 4/5 -- just a bit on the sweeter side and a bit heavy. But quality and taste was good. Service 5/5 -- server was kind and patient. I'm a bit Ambiance 4/5 they should add more seats for customers. Overall -- 4.5/5 would go back for some more next time.

Village Ice Cream actually has a few locations, with this one (Victoria Park) being their original shop. Basically, the building and entrance are further into the parking lot, away from the street. Said lot is pretty accessible from all directions thanks to the connecting parking lots and inner street (between buildings), though some of the other lots are fenced off as part of private property. The most well-known directions are that it's at the end of the 10 Aveuene SE cul-de-sac. We were actually walking down 4 Street SE, and they had stairs leading up to the cul-de-sac. We were there during the summer, and they had a long enough line that most of the people were outside. And while there was some indoor seating, the setup (like the open garage door) was designed for people to hang around outside in that parking lot area in a community event fashion. Not a lot of shelter from the sun (or rain if it came down to it), but they were great about having free, cold water inside and right next to the door. Nothing was too sweet. They do have a few vegan ice creams, but it's grouped with the seasonal stuff so the flavors are rotated out. We REALLY liked their ice cream, it was so good! The North 49 Honeyberry was lovely and the Toasted Coconut had actual coconut bits in it. And while I don't usually like toasted coconut shreds (too chewy), they did something here so they were more like delicious sprinkles. And their Earl Grey had a pronounced tea flavor. With how hot it was that day and all the walking we did, this was perfect. Next time, I would love to try one of their sundaes or a cone. My parents wanted me to note that it seemed to be a "young person place" lol. Overall, we will definitely be looking out for more of their locations when we come back to Canada.

Sadly not a fan of this one. I love ice cream but found my experience here lacking in flavor. Easy to find, with ample street parking. Staff were friendly and welcoming and gave us time to decide our flavors. Prices and sizes were easy to see and a great setup inside. They do encourage you to take your dessert to go but have benches outside. It was raining out so not a soul in sight. The vegan cookie dough was good considering it was vegan with ample cookie dough bites but I found lacking in a nice vanilla taste. The coconut was nice and creamy and I suppose coconut is a light flavor but I also think I've had better for a far better price. Sadly will not be back.

Amazing flavor combinations, unlike anything you've had at your average ice cream shoppe. Was excited to try this place because it was in the yelp top 100 best ice cream shops in Canada. I am so glad that I made the trip to try it. It is worth all the hype. Everything is locally sourced and made in house. You can tell that they do not add any food coloring into the ice cream. My favorite was the rhubarb crumble. It is only seasonal, but I recommend you try it before it is gone. The amazing subtle taste of rhubarb, that I never would've thought about combining with ice cream, but it is a match made in heaven! Servers are super friendly and they allow you to taste samples before you select your favorite flavors. Plenty of seating space and it is nice and cool inside the store so you can enjoy your delicious ice cream without it melting so quickly. My hubby tried the maple pecan and he loved it. It was very good and I usually love pecan ice cream however, I decided to be more adventurous and try the seasonal flavors and boy, am I glad I did!

I came here with my sister. I treated her for dinner and she treated me to ice cream here. We both got 2 scoops of ice cream each for $7. I got the Huckleberry flavor and the Two hills Earl Grey. My sister got the Chai Vegan Cookie and Two Hills Earl Grey. The flavors here are not as rich as Made by Marcus or Earnest in Vancouver. You get to sample before purchasing. I also tried Guide Mint but it wasn't very minty. The Chai Vegan Cookie was another one I liked but it was too dense and too filling. Overall, it was good ice cream. The location doesn't attract a lot of foot traffic. It is somewhat hidden. The decor is quite nice. There are benches inside and outside. Getting a pint here is definitely a better deal but it really depends if you want to eat it on the spot or bring it home.

Be prepared to wait for some really great ice cream. They have some classic flavors and also have some unique flavors as well as sorbets. I decided to get the Huckleberry Kid scoop because from the sample, it was pretty yummy. I also got the cone, which costs $1 and it seems to be made in house. It was worth the wait for me. They have great seating as well. I recommend coming here to try it out. They also sell stickers which costs $1 and it's cute.

Melted chocolate tastes just like store bought chocolate flavour ice cream. Not impressed.

I think this place is overrated. This place is just away from the downtown/city hall area. Not much foot traffic as most people drive here. If you are walking over from City Hall area, just keep going even though it looked like a deserted street. There was a line when we got here. I was excited to try the ice cream since the reviews were mostly good. The selection was not huge which was a good thing as I think the staff would be even more annoyed if people asked to try many flavors. I usually keep my sampling to just 1-3 flavors. I tried the Midnight Snack (seasonal flavor) and Maple Pecan. I decided to get something different and went with the Midnight Snack which was to have a mix of snack food in it -- cookies, chips, and dunno what else. I had the sundae and it only came with 1 scoop of ice cream. The whipped cream hid the pecans and hot fudge. It reminded me of New York City's Ample Hills' The Munchies which had pretzels, potato chips, crackers and crushed M&Ms. Because of this comparison, I find the Village's version paled so much. It was a "lite" version and so forgettable that I could hardly recall the taste now. I only remembered the whipped cream and pecan nuts of the sundae. The service and attitude of the staff was also quite bad. I think the staff were overworked with the constant stream of people waiting to order. Still I did not think the cashier should be quite rude to tell me to move away from the counter after paying as I was waiting for my sundae. Not my issue if your co-worker was slow in giving me the item and/or you were too overeager to take my money. Not a place I will be back as service aside, the ice cream just was not that great to warrant a second visit.

Ferraro Roche & Gigi's EggNog

Favourite Village ice cream flavour and go! Need more time? I don't blame you, there's too many incredible ones to choose from. Pictured above is a double scoop in a cup (always in a cup, I'm not a cone person) of Ferrero Roche and Gigi's Bourbon EggNog. Because what better way to enjoy the taste of the holidays than in ice cream form. Here's what I love about Village... they take pretty simple and traditional flavours, but knock them out of the park when it comes to execution. You never really have a disappointing experience there because the base ice cream is so strong and the mix-ins are just an added bonus. I've eaten a lot of ice cream in my life (it's kinda embarrassing to admit) and Village is in the top rankings. Here's my thoughts on these 2 Holiday Seasonals: RATING: 8/10 - Gigi's Bourbon EggNog This rating is based on my OWN personal preferences. While I love eggnog, it's not within my top Christmas flavours. Plus I'm a sucker when it comes to mix-ins whereas this one doesn't have any. The base is strong and on the boozy side, so if you're an eggnog fiend, you'll absolutely adore this one. RATING: 8.5/10 - Ferrero Roche I LOVE HAZELNUT. Village releases this flavour almost every holiday season and I'm so happy they do. It's like a Bueno bar in icecream form. Plus I love the ferrero chunks to break up the texture of the ice cream. It's crunchy and delicious! Both of these are a winner and depending on your preferences will likely depend on which one you gravitate towards. You can never go wrong with Village Ice Cream

So happy to have stopped here during a quick stop in Calgary. We walked up and as described, it was in an area that you would not expect until you saw all the cars lining the street. The line was out the door on a cool Sunday evening but it moved fast. We tasted a couple options before choosing our flavors and prices were reasonable for such good and unique ice cream. The staff was very helpful and despite the line it moved quick. We ended up with single scoops of the carnival corn, village vanilla bean, cardamom & guava coconut milk. The flavors were all spot on and also not overwhelming. The carnival corn which we thought might be too much was very good and actually had popcorn in it. The cardamom was a treat and the vegan guava coconut milk was light but fresh with the fruit flavor and way creamier than I expected from coconut milk. While the ice cream was wonderful I truly enjoyed eating it out on the sitting area outside. It was perfect for enjoying good food with family & friends.
