Salmon Toast

Food quality, and taste is 5/5. They use good quality ingredients, you can tell by its taste and how delicate yet simple the dishes are. Items are priced reasonably. Presentation wise, I'd say 4.5/5 because the food is presented well but plating could really be improved. Service is honestly so so great. The staff are super nice and kind! Ambiance honestly is 3.5/5 only because I see how much potential there is to the place. The food is no doubt absolutely good and I just wish the ambiance could match it just to package the whole brand. My unsolicited comment or advice would be to add art or decor to the place. Don't get me wrong, it's not bad at all. The restaurant/ store ambiance has a homey and authentic aesthetic -- but I just think it could be improved by adding a bit more of decor/ art and perhaps by also improving the table arrangements/ set up. I've been more than once and will keep coming back.

I had no clue Manuel Latruwe Belgian Patisserie & Bread Shop was situated in Victoria Park. I've driven by this spot many times and never gave it a second glance. It's been open for almost two decades and it's located beside a Chocolaterie Bernard Callebaut. We dropped in on a Saturday afternoon. This place reminds of an old school, fancy style patisserie/bread shop. At least there's some free parking out front. Hours are very standard for a patisserie. They had baguette sandwiches, bread, duck and rabbit pate, homemade jams, sorbet and ice cream. For sweets, there were macarons and cakes. Macarons are $2.10/each but get slightly cheaper if you buy more. Individual cakes were $6.50. They had almost two dozen worth! Be prepared to hem and haw. Cakes looked decadent. They ranged from $20.00 to $30.00 (depending on the size). - Macarons ($26.00 for 12) - we were here for one thing and one thing only: macarons. We picked a variety of flavours; from what I can remember, these had a decent texture but neither of the three of us were blown away.

Chocolate croissant. Probably one of the best I have ever had even though I wish there was a little more chocolate

They have a good selection of fresh bread and pastries. I loveddddd my chocolate croissant. The coffee, however, was gross. Would not recommend coffee but come here for some higher end pastries and bread!

Items Selected: Almond Croissant Sour Cherry Turnover Apricot Almond Danish Mille Feuille Still amazed that there are eateries in 2017 that scorn pictures, but finding just that as I casually snapped a photo of Manuel Latruwe's pastry cases, it was after a brief moment browsing the shelves that the urge to leave was set aside, a good choice as the Belgian Patisserie's Viennoiserie are some of the finest in Calgary. Told that the warning was given due to the Chef's policy of hiring a photographer to take promotional shots, but that I was welcome to take pictures of anything I purchased for 'personal use,' it was with a curtailed order of four items that I seated myself at a small table towards the back of the café, the four item spread clearly the work of someone with talent, a quick perusal of the website indicating that the Chef had enrolled in culinary school at age twelve and had thus been pursuing his craft for nearly four decades. Now offering his confections in Calgary for over eighteen years, the season and region continuing to inspire innovation to this day, it was with a loud crack and shower of crumbs that a knife cut into an Croissant topped and filled with lightly sweetened ground-Almonds, not one drop of Frangipane to be found here or in the Apricot and Almond Danish that spoke volumes about the benefit of an early arrival as the layers were still crunchy and the filling still warm-to-touch. Told that the Sour Cherry Turnover was a new item, the separation providing an almost a Cruller-like effect to the pastry itself, suffice it to say that those favoring tart over sweet would be well-advised to investigate this option further while traditionalist will be pleased to see a textbook Mille-feuille that would only be better if made a la minute.

Disappointment! I like their croissant and I thought they have a nice breakfast too. If you want to eat breakfast then I would say go somewhere else. They should have at least a vision when it comes to what to serve. Look at the photo: a piece of bread, three slices of cheese, jam, butter and egg. No fruit, no greens or tomatoes, the plate was basically empty. This was 8 dollars. Not again, never!

If there's one word I could say about Manuel Latruwe's, that word would be, QUALITY. I forgot to check in there this morning :( But, thats because my senses were completely overwhelmed by all the pastries. I always get the Lemoncello Danish (OMG if you love lemon anything like I do, you must have this especially with Earl Grey tea or a black coffee, ugh so good) Blueberry Danish (if you're not allergic to blueberries like one of my friends are... sad right? I know, you must try this. This morning I picked up a large quiche that has Boccaccio, Tomatoes and Basil for $14 (I'm sharing it with coworkers as I write this haha). I was being adventurous today and wanted something different for breakfast. They asked if I wanted them to heat it up for me and so they did... but it took 10 minutes :P I didn't know what to expect honestly, I mean I didn't ask what the quiche's shell was made from or anything. All I knew was that I loved the ingredients because I love Margherita pizzas and I was just trying something new... ... The quiche falls apart really quickly as it has a very soft texture. The taste... WHAT?! Sooo unexpectedly amazing... my eyes popped outta my face! I was not expecting it to be this good. Seriously. I think the crust is made with the same dough for croissants; and its topped with fresh ingredients. A friend introduced me to this place. We had the Le Sablon for breakfast; Smoked/Cured Salmon on top of a slice of bread with a poached egg in the middle and small steamed potatoes. I've had better dishes with salmon and eggs, but Manuel Lawtruwe's specialties I guess lay in their pastries. Friendly staff and delicious treats. Please excuse me while I finish my quiche haha.

spilt creme brulee that was liquidy as soup
Xenia V.

So we just moved into the neighborhood and after a few weeks decided to give this place a try. We go in after work at 4:45pm on Monday, all the shelves are already cleared and you cant see any pastries. Ok, fine so we order a creme brulee to go. The girl then passes us the box, without any warning as to how liquid it is or to keep it upright or not. No bag is given, so as we carry on to Sunterra market for additional desserts, I place it in the bag given there. By the time i get home 15 min later, the $7 creme brulee is a splaterring mess of things all over the container, completely uneatable. The consistency looks like it was more liquidy than any creme brulee I've ever had (usually more on a custardy side) and clearly the caramelized top didn't hold it down nearly enough. So I go in to the store as soon as I'm able next time (fri, after work, as i usually work 7-5) to tell what happened to the sales associate there and warn them that more customers will probably be quite unhappy unless you package up certain desserts properly, make a not that they should be kept upright or that they are way more liquid than one would expect. She only shrugs her shoulders and starts lecturing me that creme brulees are liquid by nature. No apologies, no offers or replacement or compensation- nothing. SO, sorry to tell you, MANUEL LATRUWE this is THE WORST CUSTOMER SERVICE I've ever seen!!! And I've been in customer service industry for over 20 years. You've lost my potential business as a neighbor and all of those who I hope will take the time to read this review. In this day and age this is completely unacceptable. It doesn't matter how good your products are, if you don't have the front end staff trained to provide courteous and friendly experience, the business will not sustain itself.Good luck.

Twyla Y.

It's always a good day when Manuel Latruwe is involved! Such a great place to pick up a nice loaf of bread, and when I stopped in earlier today I was happily surprised to see so many Gluten Free choices of desserts. Even a macaron sorbet sandwich thing - gluten AND dairy free! SO GOOD!

Regular croissant.
Steve R.

Went here hoping for a good and local croissant. The texture and density were pretty good, however the flavour was off. The taste had some sort of lingering and unpleasant flavour to it, likely due to the butter used. The price was very high for a single croissant as well.

Nelly B.

This place a nice selection of desserts, macaroons, pastries, cookies and take home frozen pizzas, croissants, cinnamon buns etc. I have been here also for lunch and their quiche with side salad was delicious.

Medium Spinach & Feta Quiche (half ordered for take away) with a side salad.

I tried their north 49 honeyberry flavor (always flavors) and their matcha lemon cookie flavor (seasonal flavor). I really liked the north 49 honeyberry flavor because of the slight tartness of the ice cream. I also don't like my ice cream too overbearingly sweet so north 49 honeyberry flavor was a good choice for me. The matcha lemon cookie was a solid optional too for a seasonal flavor. I'm a sucker for matcha flavor and the lemon cookie complemented the matcha well. The lemon cookie also added nice contrasts in texture too. The ambiance is nice too, I like the open space and greenery. I feel like the thorough menu description beforehand was a good touch so I felt very confident in what I wanted when ordering since the descriptions for flavors were so detailed. Would recommend trying Village Ice Cream and there are several locations throughout Calgary!
