    Small Snack Pack

Let's talk sweets... This is a hot topic for me. My specialty. Sweet Relief has been my go-to for special occasion desserts. Their cakes are indulgent and you guessed it--sweet. Not sickly sweet but the perfect amount of sweet. They also prepare little cakettes that are perfect for sharing without a crazy amount of leftovers. This time around I ordered a single slice of their Nanaimo Bar Cake (I've been dying to try this ever since it was listed in Avenue's Top 25 Things to Eat in Calgary) and their small assorted treat box. Let's talk about it... RATING: 9.5/10 - Nanaimo Bar Cake It's brilliant that Sweet Relief does cake by the slice. Sometimes you just can't justify a full cake by yourself (imagine that?). Take two sweet treats, like layered cake and a Nanaimo bar, that are superb on their own and mix them together--a mash-up made in heaven. I never doubted the logic here but it was even more scrumptious than I imagined. My favourite part is the middle layer--the crusty coconut layer, just like the bottom of a Nanaimo bar (the icing on the cake--sorry, bad pun). It's heavy, it's rich, and oh so good! Did I eat this all in one sitting? Hell yeah....I couldn't resist and these are healthy portions. I'd been dreaming about it for days. RATING: 8/10 - Snack Pack I also ordered their small variety snack pack of baked goods. I've only experienced their cakes so I was pumped to try some of their other goodies. While everything was tasty, the rich, moist brownie stood out. I love chocolate. This treasure trove also includes a macaron (tasty blue morsel), sugar cookie (a melt-in-your-mouth bunny). I'm happily anticipating the salted caramel candy bar, sandwich cookie and chocolate covered oreo. Every single treat was crafted and packaged with care. I'm super impressed with the value and quality of everything I bought. Whether you're looking for a special occasion cake or decide you deserve a treat and who doesn't during these long, dark days of isolation? Check out Sweet Relief to fulfill all your cravings.

The Oreo cookie cupcake was pretty good but the vanilla sprinkles cupcake was less than good. I've made better tasting ones at home. I'm hoping to go again before we leave to try other flavors. I tried the Calgary O cookies which were just "ok." The sprinkle cookie was soft but the frosting inside was bland.

Sweet Relief has two locations, this one and a booth at Granary Road and I've visited both on numerous occasions. Although I can bake I do like to order cakes for family birthdays and celebrations, especially if I'm doing all the other cooking for a big group of people. Deidre the owner and master chef is the sweetest person ever, she's as sweet as her cakes are. All the goodies are delicious but it's the cakes that I keep coming back for, you can customize flavours and add-ons so they meet whatever preference you (or the birthday person) have and they make a real statement at dinner.

So I was told by my sister that she wanted a fancy cake. Most bakeries needed weeks of notice. Called sweet relief up and they were willing to take the time to hear her demands. With the expectation that I was going to get a no, I was surprised they said no problem! So one week later I went in and it was ready. But they went above and beyond and added details to make it special. They have a variety of cookies, cupcakes, ice cream, everything! Thank you for making this so special for my sister and those cookies were amazing!

I LOVE sweet Relief. Since opening of the store I've been a loyal follower of her sumptuous, delicious desserts. I get all my birthday cakes for this little shop; that serves up heaven on a plate. The staff are friendly, and I'm sure many delicious years are to follow!!

This bakery's location is really close to my work, and it caught my eye shortly before my daughter's 2nd birthday. I wouldn't have thought to order her cake, but being pregnant and lazy, it occurred to me that picking up a finished cake the day of her party would be well worth the money. Deidre was quick to respond to my email, and was even able to accommodate my request for a gluten free cake. She was easy going about design ideas, and didn't charge me any extra to do a design that wasn't a standard from her website. The cake (chocolate with peanut butter icing for the filling) was so yummy, served our big group with leftovers to spare, and everyone kept asking me if I should be eating it because they couldn't believe it was gluten free. The shop is beautiful and Deidre was a sweetheart - I'll be back :)

Was walking around in the neighborhood when we came across this adorable pastry shop! The cupcakes and macaroons here are not like any other ones I've seen before. They are so beautifully decorated and they taste like heaven! Joel, the store owner is so nice and his wife, Deidre is a world-class trained pastry chef. I'm definitely coming back here!

I met Deidre At the Bridal Fantasy show and hired her to bake my wedding cake in August 2015. Despite Sweet Relief being a newer business in the industry, I was impressed with her experience (apprenticed through the Banff Springs hotel) and the flavour of her samples. I met with, and ordered samples, from 3 companies in Calgary on the same day. I brought all the samples home to my family and tasted them all. Unanimously, my finance and our kids all chose Deidre's cakes. The best part, was that her quote was also at the best price! My husband selected a rich chocolate cake with chocolate mousse, and I supplied a picture of what I wanted it to look like... The end product? The cake looked fantastic, meringue mushroom decorated, and tasted even better! I had several relatives confess that they are double helpings and how pleased they were with a wedding cake that was also incredibly delicious. I ordered enough thinking I would save the top tier, but alas... There was none left! A great success. Deidre was professional, prompt, and all was delivered to perfection on time. I would highly recommend Sweet Relief for your special event cake or pastries!

Loved my birthday cake, the owners are so friendly and helpful!! Plus, the sweets are delicious!!

Ever since we had kouign amann almost a decade ago in a French patisserie in Quito, Ecuador of all…read moreplaces, my husband has been on the hunt for the best kouign amann wherever we travel. The bad news is, there is no good kouign amann in Seattle or anywhere in the western US (so far, by our calculations). The fantastic news is that there IS stunningly delicious kouign amann in Calgary! I first balked at La Boulangerie because I had bookmarked two other bakeries to try. But I'm so glad we came here. Walking up to the storefront, I took in the quaint outdoor tables and the people enjoying a coffee and brunch. The first language I heard outside was French, which only added to the idea that we were in the right place. It wasn't busy when we walked to the counter at an off hour during the week, but I could see this place being slammed on a nice weekend. Do yourself a favor and take the time to look at all of the treats in the case. I had no idea which one to pick, but I'm so happy I went with the pear marzipan croissant - something I wouldn't easily be able to find at home. The savory breakfast crepes were tasty but could have been enhanced by a sauce on the side - the ingredients inside were a little dry. The Nutella latte was AH-MAZE-ING. Sweet, hazlenutty, but not overpowering. I immediately looked up a recipe for a future attempt to recreate it at home. The standout by far was the kouign amann, which comes in more than one flavor (insert mind blown emoji here). My husband chose a vanilla-filled one. Holy lamination. The layers, the glaze, the crunch. The vanilla cream filling was somehow both fluffy and delicately flavored yet sturdy enough to survive a day in the car. If I could fly back to Calgary every weekend just to buy a single kouign amann from this place, I would. Service was wonderful and we were surprised that that instead of calling our number, the staff walked each component of our order out to us. Highly recommend. Please visit and fulfill all your kouign amann fantasies!
