Heard a lot of great things about this place, so this place has been on my list for quite awhile and finally made it. If you want amazing, fresh, and supreme sushi, this is the place! If you are thinking, no need to think. Go! Trust me! You won't regret it! First of all, the sushi chefs are Japanese, so you know that the sushi is going to be legit. And it was busy there from customers and take-out, so you know that everything will be fresh, too. There were so many options to choose from the menu, so I had to ask for a recommendation. My friend and I were recommended to try the omakase option and, boy, that was a perfect choice! There were 3 types of omakase and we chose the first one. -Sushi omakase - $70 -Sashimi omakase - $80 -Sushi & sashimi omakase - $90 This was my first omakase experience where I walked out super full and impressed. -We were advised to eat each piece without soy sauce because each piece was curated with their own unique flavors. -After our first bite, we were advised that we could ask the sushi chef to adjust the rice and wasabi ratio in each sushi piece. We decided to keep it as is. -The wasabi here is really good, but spicy, so if you can't handle the spiciness, definitely ask for less. I was crying because of the wasabi but I didn't want it to be adjust because it was so good. -On the menu, it states that you have 2 hours, which allowed us to enjoy the omakase at a nice pace. -The udon soup you get in the end is made with hand-cut, chewy noodles and it was a perfect ending. -And this omakase also includes a dessert at the end, which was a perfect sweet ending. Nice cozy sushi restaurant in the area with free parking on site. Brought a friend to try their sushi specifically their specialty roll since most reviews are based off their Benton boxes and sashimi omakase which looked fresh and clean. We tried the Titanic, love spice, tuna amazing, Naruto and spider roll and their octopus carpaccio. Their lunch came with a small salad and soup and at the end, you get either green tea, vanilla or red bean ice cream. My friends favorite was the Love Spice and Tuna Amazing while I enjoyed the Titanic and Tuna amazing. The spider roll felt a little disappointing due to the vastly small amount of crab. Octopus carpaccio was slightly too salty as it's doused in ponzu sauce but still a nice dish. Next time we will be back for the sashimi omakase. We stumbled upon this hole in the wall when looking for dinner before our movie at the iPic. We are so happy we did! Upon entering, the small space is filled with happy patrons ordering an array of sushi platters. It seems to be BYOB, as many people had brought their own wine bottles upon sitting. As we sat, we were given hot green tea and our menus which were filled with pages of authentic dishes. We ordered the soft shell crab, per our waiter's request, a miso cod dinner box, deluxe sushi platter and negi toro handrolls. Disappointing. We arrived exactly on time for our reservation, and we were seated more than 20 minutes later. We ordered as soon as we sat down, just a couple of appetizers and some sushi. The appetizers came out fairly quickly, then the first part of the sushi order. But the second part of the sushi order took 45 minutes, leaving half the table to wait for their meal. One of their maki was wrong, but we didn't say anything - no one wanted to wait any longer for food. The moriawase selection was pretty plain and generic except for a piece of otoro. In fact, 40% of it was cooked shrimp, mackerel, eel, and squid, among the cheapest nigiri you can get. The service was... odd. Empty plates sat on our table for a long time. Miso soup inexplicably arrived at the end of the meal. And we had to flag down the lone waiter/host anytime we needed anything. We did see some more artful plates of fish going to other tables, so maybe we didn't know what to order. We also saw a lot of people waiting by the door for a long time. Maybe they'd enjoyed better experiences in the past, but of course that wasn't much consolation to us. Apart from the quiet old man working away behind the sushi bar, this place really felt like it was flying by the seat of its pants. The vibe was chaotic, and the food was just okay. Been meaning to try this place and finally got a chance to this evening. First and foremost, the chirashi was on point. Quality of fish was great. The staff was very friendly and seemed to always come by at the perfect times. The kids loved the tempura udon and enjoyed the shumai. Portions were solid and we had leftovers. As an early Valentine's Day celebration, we decided to treat ourselves to an omakase dinner. I made reservations for the Friday before V-Day for a 6 pm counter seating. There are only 6 seats so make sure to reserve. Otherwise, if you do omakase at the table, the fish is served all at once and it's just not the same experience. I wasn't expecting NYC-quality sushi but I have to say that the quality was up there, and you get a much bigger bang for your buck. We did the sushi and sashimi omakase ($90) and we left so stuffed. You would never find such a deal in NYC. Here is everything we ate: Chawanmushi (steamed egg in dashi) - this was a nice opener to the meal Sashimi plate (hamachi, amberjack, yellowtail, octopus, uni/scallop/ikura) - I liked the hamachi and yellowtail. I didn't love the amberjack - it was pretty basic, as was the octopus. The star of the show was definitely the uni/scallop/ikura. It came nestled in this cucumber flower thing For the sushi pieces: madai, fluke, striped jack, botan ebi with Hokkaido uni, hamachi toro, ika with uni, kanpachi, otoro, Hokkaido uni, needle fish, seared otoro, salmon with ikura. My favorites were the ebi, hamachi toro (I've never had this before and seriously, it just melts in your mouth), otoro, uni, and salmon. The rest were good but pretty standard pieces. After this, there was more food. They give you a fried shrimp head (my fave!) and Korean udon noodles in soup. I was already so stuffed at this point but the noodles and the broth were just so comforting, I had to eat it. The meal ends with your choice of green tea or red bean ice cream. I wouldn't say any of the pieces are super innovative or creative but again, it's the price point for the quality and quantity you get. Overall, it was a great experience. We spent about two hours there. The staff was also really nice. They were super busy that night but were very apologetic, and honestly, we didn't mind hanging out and eating slowly. I can't wait to come back and try some more sushi, and I will definitely be ordering a bowl of those noodles. And that's the great thing about this place - if omakase isn't your thing, they have other options, including fushi (sushi rolls with lots of sauce), and kitchen entrees. Their lunch specials also seem like a great deal. Tip - BYOB but if you're going to do the sushi and sashimi omakase, I'd recommend saving your stomach real estate for just that. There's also a parking lot with a good amount of parking, so it was nice to not have to worry about parking in Fort Lee for once. read more

Yamagata is a terrific "standard" Japanese restaurant in Fort Lee. The biggest problem I have with this restaurant is that it is very small, so it is often fully booked. Make a reservation by calling them in advance. The first time we came here, we made the mistake of showing up with a party of four and expecting to be seated at 6 pm on an arbitrary Thursday. They were too full and sent us away. You can get a lot of typical Japanese dishes and typical Americanized Japanese dishes here. You can get standard Japanese appetizers such as agedashi tofu, tempura, tatsu-age hamachi kama (yellowtail collar) and yakitori. You can also get chicken, shrimp and salmon teriyaki, salmon or shioyaki (grilled/salted fish), katsu and tonkatsu (fried pork), a number of different types of udon noodles, and of course sushi. The warm foods were all cooked very well (we particularly enjoyed the seafood dishes - grilled fish, hamachi kama). The sushi all tasted fresh. They give red bean or green tea ice cream at the end of the meal which was a hit for our kids. I am sure we will keep coming back. read more

This is not a traditional Omakase set up or spot but if you're looking for no frills, quality fish, and an incredible budget friendly and casual spot to get in your cravings, this is for you! They offer the Omakase at the bar as well as seated. I prefer to have this at the bar so that the flavors are more fresh piece by piece when it is served. Their Omakase starts off with a warm appetizer, followed by the nigiri pieces, and then a noodle soup, which is always my favorite part because I crave something warm and comforting after the nigiri pieces. We came here at lunch time on Saturday and waited 20 min for table. We ordered the lunch set. Everything was good except the Chirashi doesn't have uni. (The menu's picture show that it has uni). This is an interesting sushi place that offers omakase (chef's choice), which is what I'm going to be focused on. The chefs all speak Korean and this place was packed on a Friday lunch! Anyways, if you want the finest omakase experience, this isn't it. Go to 69 Leonard St or Kura and spend multiple times what you are paying here instead. Pieces of nigiri are very large and some are flawed. However! You get a toooon of food for your money and several pieces were excellent as well! For $70, you get a chawanmushi, edamame, salad, 10 (I count 13 though) large pieces (I'd say 1/3 bigger than usual) of nigiri, including 2 pieces of otoro, excellent Hokkaido uni, and spotted prawn. Also came with a noodle soup and a green tea dessert (genmaicha?). This is a lot of food. At a usual budget Omakase of 12 or so pieces, you get much less. A pleasant surprise! The meal started with a chawanmushi (steamed egg) edamame, and salad. These were all decent. Then the sushi pieces started. My impressions are below. Snapper with sea salt on top- there was too much sea salt and it was overpowering Fluke with shiso- good rice (somewhat warmer than room temp). The wasabi underneath the nigiri was super overpowering here and my friend and I teared up. I did not have high expectations of the rest of the meal going forward. Things improved a lot though! Shima aji- this was a big meaty piece. Good. Scallop with citrus. The scallop was firm and tasty. Citrus juice was a great addition Spotted prawn topped with uni- excellent. Good bite. Uni complemented the prawn magnificently. Kanpachi belly (amberjack) with spicy yuzu- firm, good amount of acid. Squid with uni- ok, didn't pair that well with the uni Yellowtail (hamachi-) soft, a bit spicy. Good. Hokkaido uni- a pleasant surprise to see the more expensive uni variant at such a low price point (for Omakase). This is one of the best pieces of Hokkaido uni I've had. Creamy and had a very long sweet aftertaste. Would've gotten another piece if I wasn't full from the meal! O Toro (very fatty tuna)- lots of sinew. Very fatty as expected. Also a huge piece of fish like the other pieces. Fried shrimp head - crispy and yummy Seared toro- Rich, savory, and had a nice salty sauce. Not sinewy like the previous piece of toro. Anago (sea eel) 2 ways- sea salt and with eel sauce (and an additional topping). Sea salt piece was on the more bland side. The piece with sauce was very good, and the additional seasoning (not sure what it was) added a good kick. I literally swear by Yamagata. It's the only restaurant I feel restored to full health capacity after eating there. The best quality ingredients will do that and they have that here. The most delicious, melt in your mouth, toro with all the health boosting fish oils, the most succulent scallop sushi you'll ever find. Even their agadashi tofu is an experience. It should be a three and a half stars dining experience. We order the Bento lunch box with white Fish as our picks, because my girlfriend had it many times before and it was delicious, not today. But the manager or owner handle the complaint very well. He took our order and tasted it in the kitchen and confirmed our findings that the fish was not cooked throughly, that's why it was mushy in the center. He apologized and took care of our bill. I got a decent variety of 7 piece sushi and 6 piece scallion roll (basically just rice). The beef appetizer was just meh and the deep fried soft shell crab was also meh (nothing special). The omasake is cheaper here than other places and I have to say that many pieces were so interesting and fresh; very delicious. Many melted in my mouth and every bite was a party in my mouth with so many different flavors. Considering that your whole table gets the side dishes that come with omasake, you will all feel pretty full, if not, almost satisfied. However, I would like to note that I had to wait 20 minutes after my reservation time which is why they gave us free "service dishes." Wow, Yamagata was so good! I've been to a few Omakase places in NYC that are pricey so I was a little hesitant to have Omakase at this place at the price point on the menu. But, they didn't disappoint. This place is like a hidden gem in NJ! Great Omakase and it's BYOB! The staff was so welcoming and kind. We drank sake with chefs and had a good meal. By the end of dinner I was so stuffed! If you're going on a Friday night, definitely make reservations because they get crowded. Also, I think if you're going here for sushi, 100% do the sushi Omakase dinner - it's worth it. The other guy starts yelling at me for "cancelling" but legit yelling. I proceed to explain that I'm not cancelling but simply asking to move it down. He continues to yell at me telling me it's a hassle because I'm taking up 2 tables then hangs up the phone on me. I proceed to call him back and give him a taste of his own medicine... he calls me back from his cell phone and starts cursing at me in Korean. My guy, are you okay? We've been here multiple times and have yet to have a bad bite. Each time we've done the sushi and sashimi omakase. Fair warning it is a lot of food and you will leave fully stuffed. The quality of the pieces here rivals NYC. The omakase has a great variety of sashimi, nigiri, as well as dishes. Leave room for the udon and ice cream at the end! The service here is impeccable too, teas always filled, plates cleared after every bite. This place is BYOB which is great. They are so generous too, first time we were there didn't know it was BYOB and they offered their own private supply. I first walked in and saw the dine in seating was filled to capacity, but the moment my friend and I were noticed, which was very quickly by the way, they asked us if we wanted to dine outside. We were okay with that so we went. The servers were very hospitable and they would check on us pretty often. The deluxe also comes with UNI - which honestly i don't think is the best but!! - something I wouldn't expect at that price point.
