Scallop roll, BC roll and Negihama
Sara A.

I have been meaning to check out this little eatery. Once we walked in but had just missed their lunch hour. Authentic Japanese sushi, not loaded with intense flavour sauce or too much rice. Had a variety of sushi rolls and miso soup. Love the miso soup, the smoked bonito flavour was evident but not overpowering. The seaweed and tofu were delicious. Sushi 1) chopped scallop roll - satisfying and it is clean tasting, not loaded with too much sauce which is nice 2) BC roll - skin is nicely bbq and again, lightly drizzled with sauce. 3) negihama roll - fresh and delightful. Just enough chopped green onions Look forward to my next visit as it is probably my favourite sushi place in this area of Vancouver.

A Japanese restaurant ran by Japanese family. Sushi is really fresh and is somewhat limited. When I say limited, it is because there is only one sushi chef. He understands his limits and doesn't take order unless he knows that he has enough time to make it. It is all about quality. I have seen people who walked in and he turned customer down. The place is small and so it is best if you make a reservation. Food might take awhile to prepare but its totally worth waiting. Super fresh sushi. I highly recommend giving this place a try.

Our plans for lunch got messed up so we decided to go for sushi instead. Never can go wrong with sushi in my books. Scanned for a new spot to try and found Yagoto Sushi Dining. It's located right beside Evelyn's Coffee Shop. We dropped in 20 minutes before they closed for lunch on a Monday afternoon but they were very accommodating and didn't rush us. It's run by a very gentile Japanese couple. Love the mom and pop shops. Jazz music was playing on the speakers but the inside is pretty quaint. Small and compact. They have a lot of lunch specials. Lunch bento boxes, a variety of dons (poke don) and sushi/sashimi/nigiri/udon/chirashi combos. Super reasonable! The regular menu is short but standard: appetizers, salad, sashimi, grilled, udon noodles, donburi, maki, nigiri and sushi rolls. - Green tea - complimentary and hot! The waitress was great and refilled our cups several times. - Nigiri combo ($10.50) - tuna, salmon, ebi, white fish, tuna maki and miso soup. Miso soup was a bit oh the salty side. Nigiri was good quality and fresh. The tuna maki was excellent but a few pieces had some potent wasabi bites. I'm talking it'll clean your sinuses out. - Chirashi & udon combo ($12.50) - mini chirashi, mini udon and green salad. This was the perfect amount and a great way to try both dishes. The udon broth was sweet and the noodles had a good bite to them. The chirashi had a nice mixture of salmon, tuna, white fish, ebi, tamago and REAL crab. I was impressed. Rice was done properly/correctly. Another awesome sushi find. Great quality and care taken. Will be back.

Two days ago, I tried Miyoko Salon the first time. It's good. During conversation with the hair stylist, she knew I like authentic Japanese food so shared with me that the neighbour Japanese restaurant Yagoto is run by Japanese chef so I tried buying a party combo A home for dinner with the family. (Actually, the restaurant is popular and while waiting I see quite some customers coming to pick up their orders and/or waiting outside for their order. Note that it's not fast food and it takes time for the chef to prepare for each customer order one by one. To save your waiting time, better place order by phone first. ) The maki combo was good and I brought my wife and son there the following day to order again at their choice. The sushi are good and authentic. The Japanese chef Yamamoto San is very friendly too.

Notice the super lean version of teriyaki, I like that. Everything sushi related has been top notch here.

Reviewed years ago, still so good. Awesome chef, can't wait to see him craft some sushi again. I like the negitoro the nigiri combo.. always wild salmon which is nice to not have to ask for it..

In the neighborhood at St Johns School for a basketball tournament . Needed a quick bite for my son. Ran out of the gym hit the street and came across Yagoto. Expecting to be served pre-made sushi rolls - the go to's - teriyaki and dragon rolls- but I WASNT. He made them from scratch - put a lot of care into one. Super fresh - super yum. I will go back to explore the menu some more. Plus they were super affordable...

Roll combo, small chirashi don, and a special combo.

Great hidden sushi gem in Van! It is a small restaurant right on Broadway. The sashimi is very fresh and the rolls are great - perfect proportion of fish to rice. The service was very attentive. I would come back in a heartbeat!

This is truly one of the greatest mysteries of the Kits culinary scene! Here you'll find quality sashimi/sushi at a reasonable price, a Japanese-run premises and a bright and tidy interior. Yet the place is empty on a Tuesday evening. I mean, we're the only table at 6:30 pm and while we were there they've received like one take-out order over the phone. Yes it's THAT quiet. I think a lack of cooked items on the menu might be the culprit but who knows. Go figure

We yelped for a cheap sushi spot close to Arbutus Club/ Crofton field - and yelp popped up this 4.5 spot. There are a bunch of sushi spots on this two block strip close on Broadway. We were a group of two adults and three kids. The kids got a mix of Maki, Rolls, and Combos. Of the things we ordered: - the Special A Combo was good value and well executed. The dressing on the salad was unique and tasty, the miso soup as a little small but flavourful, and both the BC Roll and the California roll we're good - though I would recommend the BC Roll as it's got a good amount of Salmon meat in it - versus other places that are more about just salmon skin. The two pieces of seared tuna and salmon sashimi was good, and the salmon and evil nigiri also pretty standard. The chicken teriyaki was very plain - lightly seasoned, no skin, and a light soya/ ponzu type sauce, not the typical gelatinous teriyaki sauce. - The kids said Plain Udon was good. It was very plain looking. Haha. But the kids ate it all up. - The unagi and prosciutto roll was unique. It was smaller and lighter on prosciutto that i thought it would be. Overall, the value for the money was good. The rolls are very light and fresh - so I wouldn't say we felt really full at the end of the meal, but the food was tasty. Service was polite, timely, and accommodating to our kids' allergies. This place is a good "quick value eats" sushi spot.

Wow. Totally floored that on westside, to get this quality from an authentic Japanese chef, this is my go-to from now on---before their prices go up. It's insanity. Ordered Gyozas (lots of meat as per pic) and fresh: not like some places where you can tell the edges are chewy from a hasty defrost. House Roll: fresh pieces of sashimi & a light special sauce Real crab cali roll: the best I've had Tomago: made in house, not as sweet as I would've liked it but still good. Free wifi! Not sure if it's date worthy, a bit minimalist decor but perhaps for casual. Quite a selection of menu items but don't expect any over the top special rolls with crazy sauces, they're not Korean or Chinese haha.

Ikura Don

Hole in the wall place, simple, but beautifully prepared and sourced food. One sushi chef, very attentive and careful, he even helped serve tables when needed. The perfect small sushi joint. Rice is light, barely Kombu scented, moist. Had local uni nigiri and an ikura don - sublime.

Deluxe assorted nigiri

Been here twice now because it is close to work and conveniently near the 99 bus stop. It's a small restaurant and can get quite busy during the dinner hours. The first time I tried the mini chirashi and udon combo, along with an ika shiso roll, chopped scallop roll, and some toro and hamachi nigiri. The fish was all fresh. As well, the price points are quite affordable and the quality is good. For my second visit, I ordered the deluxe assorted nigiri. For $20, you get 10 pieces of fish. This was definitely worth the price. The only disappointing thing was that I wanted to order toro, but they had run out. I ended up ordering the northern lights roll. In the description it said chopped scallop with asparagus and salmon and avocado on top. When it arrived, it was 8 pieces, and it was a lot for one person to eat. Only thing was that instead of asparagus, it was cucumber. Overall, the food is good and servers are friendly however sometimes slow. Both times, there was only one server, so when it got busy, it was hard to flag her down. But again, they were very nice.

From the gold railings to coat check to a piano on the stairs to an old school oyster bar showcasing their wares proudly on display, Joe Fortes has a lot going on for it. But perhaps more so than anything else is an amazing happy hour for anyone who loves oysters. Service Before diving into the food let's talk about service. The servers here are dressed in the old full whites with black ties and give you full service. They have an expert knowledge of the menu and are willing to give you any and all opinions if asked. They check on you frequently and make sure you're having a good time with enough banter to make it friendly and welcomed. Happy Hour - Alcohol With that out of the way, we can talk about the happy hour. Yes, they have a great deal when it comes to their house red and white wines where you can get 6 oz for $6 CAD or 9 oz for $9 CAD. Their beers range from $5 CAD to $8 CAD and their cocktails are all under $10 CAD. Happy Hour - Food They have some incredible truffle fries, cut thick and sprinkled with parmesan as delicate as snow for $9 CAD. Their crab & corn fritters are slightly chewy but packed with flavor and come at $12 CAD. The coconut prawns sound just as delicious as they taste and come at $13 CAD. I would avoid the Steelhead ceviche though as it was more mashed avocado than ceviche. However, HOWEVER, the star of the show are their oysters. Coming at $1.75 an oyster, you get to be as gluttonous as you'd like whilst keeping your pockets happy. Vancouver is known for their amazing seafood and with this happy hour from 3 PM - 5 PM it gives you 2 hours to fill your belly with as many oysters as you can. Even if you ordered 50 oysters you would be under $90 CAD. I should know, I did that. Last Thoughts Even without the incredible happy hour Joe Fortes would be a restaurant you have to visit during your trip to Vancouver. With a great selection of food on their menu, wait staff that feel old world and professional, and a setting fit for the city, the happy hour is just the bonus that makes visiting Joe Fortes even more enticing. Come with an appetite, leave with a smile.

We were STUFFED, for the price you're paying the portions are very fair and quality you can't beat! I've had seafood in the Bay Area, Boston, and even across countries in Asia, but I was SO impressed by Blue Water Cafe. It is a MUST if you're in Vancouver. Everything was honestly a 5/5, the only dish I would pass on is the Yellowtail, I just wasn't a fan of how much it was wavering between raw and cooked fish, along with the char. It's just not for me, but my parents enjoyed it. Nevertheless, some of the highlights was the sablefish, oh my gosh melt in your mouth. Sablefish is Vancouver locally caught, so very fresh and it has a sweet undertone with the soy and sake marinade. This was my favorite along with the Seafood Tasting for Two, which features scallop ceviche, Dungeness crab salad, albacore tuna tartare, and smoked sockeye salmon terrine. You get a diversity of fishes and flavors, which is most certainly worth the price point. It's the gems of the appetizers put into 1 order. Halibut was also noted to be locally caught, the slices were thin and a perfect app. Hamachi Kama is yellowtail collar, which has a rich, succulent meat. It tasted buttery and was also melt in the mouth. The Dutch Mule was a ginger ale with sorbet. Absolutely delicious mocktail, I held back on ordering a second. The service was also amazing!!! Our waitress welcomed us warmly to Vancouver and even gave us a complimentary dessert to welcome us to the area, even giving us tips where to go near the area and what sights to see in Vancouver.

And while there are no shortage of seafood restaurants serving fresh crab on the Steveston waterfront, we wanted to give The Crab King a fair shake. I'm so glad that we did! My wife ordered a King Crab for herself which, after tearing it literally limb-from-limb, eventually declared it to be tied for her favorite boiled crab dish anywhere! High praise coming from such a consummate crustacean connoisseur! For myself and our son, an order of fish and chips, and the grilled chicken sandwich rounded out our order, both of which were crispy, tasty and delicious. Regarding the fish and chips, they appeared to be tempura-battered, and I'm still not 100% sure what type of fish it was. It may have been cod, but it seemed more like catfish, but either way, it was tender, juicy, flaky and delicious. No complaints here! More than anything, though, the employees here went out of their way to make our experience enjoyable. Our toddler son, who is normally extremely well-behaved in restaurants, was having a bit of a fuss here and there. Without prompting, the servers brought us a little radio to play music for him, as well as a couple of toys to play with, one of them being a wind-up truck that they gave to him to take home! He loved it there, and still plays with it at home! They even played peek-a-boo with him from behind the counter, soliciting laughs and giggles, for the better part of 15 minutes! That sort of customer service is nearly impossible to find, and should be praised and cherished wherever it is found! Whatever the past may have held for this restaurant, the Crab King is an entirely new animal now, serving up fresh seafood by uncommonly wonderful employees, in a fantastic floating location. They even offer to cook spot prawns and other seafood purchased from the boats docked at the nearby waterfront marketplace, for a modest fee. With all these things going for it, there's no doubt who wears the crown of Crab King in Steveston Harbor!
