I'm not sure what happened to Rpm Steak's truffle burger for lunch but considering it wasn't $9 like this sandwich this is the BEST thing for lunch by far in the entire River North Area. I'd love to see some argue that there's something better. So many things going on in one sandwich. Sure there's the historical combination of salt from the chicken & sweet from the churro but the spicy sauce that accompanies the sandwich on the side which totally elevated it. I picked up 3 tortas and 3 churros to-go after a day at Erikson Institute, just down the block. 4 pm on a Friday was a good time to come as there was only one person in line. Counter person and host were friendly and efficient. The waiting area is awkwardly placed by the door, so I had to keep moving while guests came in and squeezed past me into the dining area, but I didn't have to wait too long. $48 for my tortas take-away, without sides, is steep so I doubt I'd return, unless it's a special occasion, but I'm guessing $12-$13 a sandwich is the going rate in the city for a fresh, handmade sandwich. Too steep for me though, especially with no sides, as my teen eats a lot and one sandwich wasn't enough. My family enjoyed their sandwiches though. My son ate two tortas and my husband ate one. I'm gluten-free and vegetarian, so I didn't order anything for myself. Xoco is a cool and unique place for a quick meal. Very good food! Stopped by here before catching a flight out of Chicago and it was perfect. Massive portion with 4 tacos per order and authentic Mexican flavor. Also got the hazelnut churro that was drizzled in a Nutella sauce and had a bunch of whole hazelnuts in the order. The waiters and waitresses were friendly and walked us through the menu even though we were ordering to go. Waited 20 minutes to get an order. I kept asking around and they kept saying someone will come to me. One of the waitresses told me to go to the hostess to order. Then I was told to go back and sit and wait for someone to help me instead. Attitude sucks although the food is quite good. My friends and I came here for the first time about a month ago, and when I sat down, I really didn't know what to think of this place because it is such a small place and doesn't really catch my eye. I also found the menu small and nothing caught my eye right away (I don't know if the menu is smaller because of COVID or if they just have a small menu in general, but the whole first page of their menu is comprised of guacamole bar, drinks, and a bunch of desserts). Admittedly, 3 out of the 4 of my friends didn't want to stay here after seeing the menu, but we took a chance and ordered, and I honestly really enjoyed my food. My one friend and I ordered the chicken tinga tacos (Heritage breed chicken, smoky chipotle, tomato sauce, local potatoes, caramelized onions, fresco cheese, avocado). The sauce they gave on the side was spicy and SO good, and the tacos were full of flavor. One thing I don't care for is that the tacos are street tacos and are small for the price; they didn't fill me at all. They also don't come with anything on the side. My other friend is a decently picky eater, and she didn't want anything so she asked if she could order cheese quesadillas even though they weren't on the menu, and they did allow this. If I ever come back here, I would love to try a margarita and dessert! If we didn't come here as late as we did, I would have been more open to trying something different on the menu, but since I was very hungry, it made me a little closed off to the menu. We did have exceptional service when we were here and our waiter had a lot of patience with us because we took a decent amount of time to figure out what we wanted. He also gave us great recommendations. Overall, I know this isn't a place I will ever crave or come back to because I choose to, but I would come back if someone wanted to try it because I would love to try the churro chicken sandwich. read more

I can't think of a happier way to start off your day other than a perfect tasting brunch. The price is so so so reasonable and quality of the food is outstanding. The moment when I took a bite of my churro chicken sandwich, I knew I would definitely return. The texture is unforgettable and bursted with flavors. So to be honest I found this place one night scrolling through Instagram of all places and I should have went with the recommendation they put out there but I went with the salad. Now don't take me wrong the salad was great really fresh, full of flavor it could have used a little more toppings on it but I guess that is why it was called Summer Breeze the vinaigrette on it was balanced as well. I did order the guacamole and added bacon and queso fresco to it, the chips themselves are clearly hand cut and made in house. The guacamole was great all the flavors were there I'd definitely ask for some lime next time. As for the dessert it was tasty they make the churros fresh in house honestly that is something hard to find most places are frozen. I used to love Xoco. I'm not sure what happened but their chicken tortilla soup is just terrible. It is sooo oily and has a very Smokey taste. It's not your traditional tortilla soup. I ordered delivery from Xoco as several people recommended the restaurant. The Tlayuda was a standout - think of a giant tostada with just the right balance of beans, melted cheese, veggies, and salsa. It's large enough for two, but gluttons like myself can probably devour one on their own. I was less impressed with the Milanesa torta. Sure, the ingredients were higher quality than a torta you might find elsewhere, but for the price it was nothing spectacular. My friend ordered a hibiscus one...there were a handful of flavors. The loaded guacamole was delicious with so many toppings. For my lunch I ordered the short rib sandwich. I'm impressed by the Spicy Churro Chicken Sandwich. As someone who shies away from mixing sweet and savory flavors in a single meal, this was the most unexpectedly great food of the day. My friends and I dropped by here just a few days after the city fully reopened . We originally meant to go to another restaurant in the area, but couldn't go to the other one due to the crowd. This proved to be a great alternative. Somehow, neither the sweetness of the churro nor the savoriness of the chicken (and the spiciness of the sauce) took dominance in the final taste. Interesting concept here. You wait in a line to order and you are given a table number. After ordering you sit at your table and the food is brought to you. The line was so long to order that if you forgot something or wanted to add something it was difficult to do. Otherwise this concept works well. Things we tried: Ahogada Torta - spicy and delicious. My favorite of the two we tried. Milanesa Torta - great flavor! Chicken was crispy and the bread was fantastic! Chicken tinga tacos - not a fan. They tasted very bland to me and the onions made it have a slimy texture that I just wasn't into. Chips and salsa. Not a huge fan of the salsas. If I come back I'll be trying the guac instead. A 4.4 stars average would be more accurate if given the opportunity to explain. We were able to get a seat right away even on a Friday at 7, something to be grateful for. However, outdoor seating leaves you susceptible to quite the solicitations- keep your water close, it's a commodity (thanks capitalism)!! We shared the chicken tinga tacos and the chicken tlayuda, both pretty notable. We left some tlayuda on the plate at the end but that's only because he had already stopped eating and I didn't want to seem ~thick~ if I kept eating you know. Whatever, he still paid so I guess the tactic worked. Although the tlayuda was tasty, it was nothing like the authentic ones from Oaxaca but let me stop there, no one died and made me the tlayuda judge. When faced the the decisión to order normal churros or glazed, do yourself a favor and order the normal. If I've learned anything from relationships, it's not to mess with it if there's nothing wrong with it, and there is nothing wrong with the OG churro with a little chocolate dipping sauce! read more

Yum! This is honestly more of a 4.5 for me, but still a highly recommend in my book. There's a lot of competition for a good Mexican restaurant in Chicago, and I feel like Xoco found a really great niche by focusing on tortas, Mexican sandwiches. There were so many delicious options on the menu I found it hard to decide exactly what I wanted! I ended up ordering pick-up through their website and got the spicy chicken churro sandwich, the pepito torta, and three plain churros. The pepito torta was hands-down my favorite thing I ordered - it was literally amazing and I didn't want to stop eating even after I was already full which says it all. It's a short rib sandwich and the meat was so tender and all the flavors mixed perfectly together. The tomatillo salsa it came with was also delicious and it also complimented the sandwich incredibly. The chicken churro sandwich I liked less. I thought it was a cute and cool idea, but I didn't end up liking it as much as I hoped I would. It was a mess to eat, it was pretty oily, and it didn't have much depth beyond slightly sweet and very spicy (to me). I'm not saying it was bad by any means, I still enjoyed it, but I don't think I'd order it again. The churros were also a bit lackluster. Still good, but nothing special. I'd be curious to try their more special churros another time but the plain ones were just fine. Went in and ate their churro chicken sandwich and carnitas pozole. I don't typically enjoy gimmicky things like a churro chicken sandwich but this was DELICIOUSSSSS!! The slight sweetness of the churro played well with the spicy chicken sandwich and ended up being a great dish choice. I also wasn't sure what to expect of the carnita pozole but the server recommended it with the pork as it was a stronger flavor and I'm glad we listened to her! The soup was light yet so flavorful. We almost didn't have room but we got their churros and a cookie to go. My boyfriend wants to go back and try a few more dishes so I'm happy this place is still tasty! read more

We also tried their hot chocolate and chocolate café con leche made with their signature bean-to-cup chocolate. Xoco's chocolate has more of bitter, dark chocolate flavor, but in a good way! It's not overly sweet so it's the perfect balance to top a sweet cinnamon-sugar churro or melt into whole milk for the perfect hot chocolate.
