I am in Chicago often for appointments at Northwestern and have tried lots of restaurants for a quick meal. Ended up at Flaco's for happy hour and it did not disappoint. I was born and raised in San Diego and was just in San Diego over the weekend. So of course my taco standards are very high. I don't know who said these are not authentic...ok so some of the flavor combos might not be what you find on a street cart taco in TJ- but OMG these were the best tacos I've had in a long time! All the authentic flavors you would expect and love in a taco!. The tortillas are hot and fresh. Taste like they were made 2 seconds ago (they don't make them onsite but they are delivered fresh daily). I tried three different tacos and the marg flight. My husband and I were visiting Chicago and on the way to our train stop, I saw a sign that said margaritas, so we took a little detour here first. We went on a Friday and it happened to be happy hour! I wish I would've read the specials and menu better, because we ordered lime margaritas before I saw that they had margarita flights for $7 during happy hour! I would've gone with that, but the marg we got was still a good second. It was a welcome frozen treat on a warm day after a ton of walking. It definitely tasted like they just freeze a cheap mix, but the presentation was pretty. Service was fabulous, the guy working the counter was helpful and friendly. I really liked that they had an ad to support the Illinois Coalition for Immigrants and Refugee rights. The lotería stickers you get for donating were cute too. While we were drinking our Margs, we saw that they had chicken tacos for $2 during happy hour so we got one to split (we were headed to dinner). It was one of the best tacos! Came here with a coworker to grab a quick lunch during our business trip. Menu options and prices were OK. There was indoor and outdoor seating available. I got the al pastor and fish tacos and my coworker got the al pastor bowl. We also got chips and guac to share, and horchata and hibiscus as drinks. The taste seemed weak to me. It didn't seem like it was seasoned well and the flavor profile felt lacking. The horchata also tasted a bit powdery and tasted a bit off. Overall it was a casual and fast spot to grab some food when in a rush. I don't think I'd be rushing back here on my next visit to Chicago though. read more

Consistent lunch spot for my coworkers and I. Quality is the same on each visit and I would highly recommend the bowls! Their chips are freshly made and their guacamole is delicious. On occasion they have an horchata with espresso- I wish this was a staple menu item! It is delicious, but I've only seen it available once or twice. Their lunch staff is friendly and the service is very quick. Their aguas frescas are also fresh and delicious. This was my first time in Chicago and my husband's second, so I let him take the lead when it came to finding tacos. We had been walking around all day and were on the verge of getting hangry when he remembered a place he'd visited on his last trip. When we walked in, it wasn't too packed--it was still early for dinner. My husband ordered the pozole, while my mother-in-law and I both had the chicken tacos. I also ordered the sangria. Being of Mex heritage and having lived and traveled in and through the US I have consumed a fair amount of Mex food ranging from Fair to Great in quality and taste. In my opinion Flaco Taco falls in the lower part of that range. Flaco's Taco presents as a fast food joint and as such ambiance is a non-starter. The food (tacos - carne asada combo) was average at best ... the sides (rice/beans and chips) were below average. Having recently relocated to Chicago I will seek out other Mex eateries in the hopes that I will find a "go-to" establishment... Flaco's Tacos unfortunately does not fit that bill.. read more

During a work trip in Chicago, I wanted something quick-ish to eat, so my concierge suggest Flaco's Tacos. The service? Excellent. My server explained my options and kindly put my drink in a to go bottle for my convenience since I had a bit of a walk back to my hotel. This spot is super festive with indoor and outdoor seating, so perfect for Taco Tuesday or any lovely summer session. I ordered the shrimp tacos with rice and beans, and jamaica/hibiscus drink. I don't love corn tortillas but my gosh- these were fantastic! Fresh, seasoned well and paired wonderfully with the two sauces (red and green). The rice and beans were a hit too. As a West Indian, I'm used to more ginger and spices in my hibiscus drinks, HOWEVER, it was a great way to cool down. As much as I want to explore what else Chicago has to offer, the temptation to return here has been living rent free in my head! We stopped in here after finding out that the Potbelly's across the street was closed, and Soupbox was long gone. We came for quick carryout and it was good! I did not take any pictures of the food, as when food travels it becomes less 'photogenic'. I took a nice festive picture of the closed dining room. I got the black bean tamale and the fish taco, I think. (so sorry this was 2 1/2 weeks ago!). I will definitely go back to try more. If it wasn't so hectic and troubled on Chicago Avenue I'd consider dine-in when they open. Maybe the margaritas would be worth it.. read more

Had catering from here for a lunch meeting, and found the food filling and enjoyable. The guacamole and chips were great, although I do wish the guacamole had just a bit more lime. Loved the chip texture- fresh and crunchy! The refried beans were very smooth and more "liquid-y" in texture than what I'm used to, but still tasted good (a little too salty but nice bean flavor). The tacos had an ample amount of meat. Not a huge taco fan in general, but these tasted pretty decent. The rice was mid, a bit undercooked and not particularly flavorful. Tried this place because of the convenience to my hotel and it was just all around terrible. The cashier was very unhelpful, unprofessional and almost nasty. Had a friend waiting for him and they kept talking about needing to get to their evening plans. How about the plans your customers have to have a decent experience that they're paying for? He even came to the counter with a hairdryer and declared that no one should use the restroom because he was about to get dressed. I could not believe what I was observing but had already paid for my meal. My friend asked for his opinion about taco choices and he was really rude about it. Food was mediocre; under seasoned and not very good. How can anyone make bad tacos? Tried the fish tacos (no seasoning and it had no texture); shrimp Tacos had overcooked and rubbery texture. Guacamole was horrible and served almost frozen. There is no way that was made on premises and if they did, it was stale and had been in the freezer. It was so cold that it was inedible. I really like this place! It's a great location; walking distance from red line Chicago Ave exit is convenient. Water Tower location is my favorite location as its close to Shopping and Michigan Ave. When I want Mexican food, this is my go-to place for dining with friends or alone. I have taken out of town friends here for dinner, eaten with family for lunch and celebrated birthdays with close friends. Recently I had a snack for myself was a great break for me. There's indoor and outdoor seating (if weather permits) at the 3 Chicago locations. I have been to all 3 Chicago sites: Water Tower: my favorite. Close to shops, people watching, great energy. Edgewater: best outdoor seating, even had a heat lamp when I ate outdoors one winter. Printers Row: I found this location intimate. I'd only go to this place with friends and won't go here at night by myself. Sign up for their Rewards Program if you eat here often. We stumbled upon this place after spending some time hanging out on michigan ave. This is arguably some of the best Mexican food that I have had in chicago. I ordered the buritto which was stuffed to capacity with chicken , rice, veggies, sour cream and cheese. The chips and queso was to die for as well and the horchata has me searching for recipes because it was so good! The service was great; the staff was friendly and attentive to us. My husband and I stopped here en route to the red line. I've past this place dozens of times when I used to work on Pearson and Michigan and finally stopped in. I can't remember what my husband got, but I enjoyed my chicken elote tacos and he enjoyed what he got. Easy to order from the kiosk.
