First time here for a lunch after arriving in Chicago. Nicely decorated interior lots of colorful wall hangings. Greeted right away. Luis was our server and he was very pleasant and helpful. Complimentary chips and salsa. Very good chips with just the right amount of salt. Ordered a couple of horchatas and they were delicious. We tried the ground beef enchiladas and a ground beef taco. Enchiladas were big enough for 2. Taco and enchiladas were made with potatoes as one of the ingredients. Very strange. First time we have had this. Downside... the beef looked and tasted burnt. Not sure what was going on. Just wasn't appealing. Overall not our best experience. I would say give it a try and see what you think. read more

This spot is definitely a hidden gem in the Lakeshore East area downtown Chicago. Unless you go into the little section that it's located at, you will probably never know it's there, however, it is by other popular restaurants. Sad to say there are not a lot of authentically good Mexican options in the downtown area of Chicago. There are a couple that are absolutely terrible, but I won't even go into mentioning them lol so I can honestly say that this spot is a top Mexican restaurant option in the downtown area. Everything that I had was good from them, starting from the margaritas to the appetizers. The quesadilla that they make comes made with four different cheeses and which ever four they chose are amazing together! Both of the entrées that we had were good. I tried thriflautas and my niece had the was quesabirria and outside of the fact that they both had great flavor, there was so much food on the plate. Definitely worth the price! We went to Gordo's for dinner on a Sunday and were seated right away. I loved that they had dog-friendly outdoor seating. We ordered the quesabirria tacos (comes with three tacos), the taco flight where you can pick any three tacos, and a large Jamaica to share. The quesabirria tacos were delicious, with very tender and flavorful meat, though they were a bit pricey at $18. For the taco flight, we chose the chicken, cochinita pibil, and fish tacos. The cochinita pibil taco was really good, and I loved the pickled onions. My boyfriend had the fish and chicken tacos. He said the fish tacos were good but would skip the chicken next time. The large Jamaica was perfectly sweet and refreshing, ideal for a hot day. I thought this was a nice quick meal, will definitely be back to try their other items. read more

Have gone to Gordo's a bunch of times, since its right across the street. Gordo's has the best cocktails. Their Bloody Mary and Jalapeno Spiced margarita are my favourite - it has the perfect blend of spices. Big fan of their enchiladas and chorizo tacos. The service I received at Gordo's has sometimes been very good, and at times very disappointing. Do not forget to have their stuffed hot churros. They will blow your mind if you love warm deserts. read more

Tucked in a Lakeshore East community, this taqueria is a must try! The moment you're seated, you're served with complimentary salsa, verde and chips. Chips are always so fresh. I have tried tacos, quesadillas, tostada, fajitas, chicken soup. The food totally hits the spot. Usually my go to is Tinga and chicken taco. Also, it is very reasonably priced. The margaritas are exceptional too. The vibe is pretty chill, casual. The place is vibrant, clean and very tidy. The staff is very friendly, pleasant and hard working. The service is quick. What a fun hidden gem. After a morning of ice skating at Maggie Daley park. We were a hungry group, with many choices of where to eat. Decided to take a chance on Gordo's. I have been wanting to check them out for a while. The restaurant itself if clean and nicely decorated. The service was great! We really enjoyed all the staff we encountered. The guac, salsa and chips, tacos, and enchiladas were all delicious! My only dislike was the music was a tad louder than it needed to be. We love this place. I HIGHLY recommend the Rajas tacos (corn or flour - both are wonderful). The queso dip is also absolutely stellar here. My partner has gotten various combinations of the tacos here as well. I've also tried the tiny quesadillas (very good) and my partner has had a few other things off the menu. Gordo's is a nice, casual spot for Mexican. We went here on Saturday before St. Patrick's day, but only waited about 20 minutes for a table. The atmosphere is loud and open. It's nicely decorated with Mexican-themed trinkets, and the margaritas are strong and tasty. The complimentary chips and salsa are really good and I think they're made in house. I had three tacos with flour tortillas. They were decent but nothing special. My friends liked their dishes more, though. Our waitress was friendly and attentive even though it was really busy. The chicken pastor was a little dry and lacked flavor but the pastor was delicious, juicy and packed with flavor. The service was fast and efficient. I got the chilaquiles and they were ok but I asked for my eggs over medium and they came out less than over easy. I also tried a Michaloda which I had been wanting to try and was not a fan. Getting here was kind of difficult to find depending on where you're coming from. We came from the upper level and could not figure out the location at all. Google kept telling us we arrived but we couldn't find it until you look on the wall of the downstairs plaza and you see this giant menu on the side of the building. Then you follow the directions to other restaurant and use the escalators to head downstairs. The service was great. Everyone was friendly and helpful when we were there. The food was delicious as well. The jamaica drink tasted very much like hibiscus and not powdery. The tacos were a good size and very flavorful. I wish they had another dessert but they ran out. Saving grace for this review is the food. After an originally quoted 20 minute wait for a group of 7 it turned into a 50 minute wait with false wait updates. Service was subpar. After receiving our food the waitress hardly checked on our party. Right before receiving our meal a waiter had dropped a tray of drinks and unfortunately myself and another person in my group were affected. This time forgot to take any pictures, but we had had a light breakfast and wanted a mid afternoon lunch but not too heavy as we were headed to Chinatown for dinner. I ordered two tacos; Carne Asada and chicken Tinga. My friend ordered a shrimp taco, which she really loved, and two others. While the Carne Asada had good taste, I had some grizzly bites so not as good as I would've liked. I also felt like chicken tinga could have more flavor. The chips and salsa were fresh and very good. Reasonable prices at a good location so would go back but try different things. Our server was attentive and took care of us well. I'll rate those places right where it currently is. Went here earlier this week on Taco Tuesday! Woohoo. They had $3 tacos. The margaritas were fine. I think light on the tequila, IMHO. Taste was good. The bar service was super slow, for some reason. The restaurant is nicely done. The focus inside is a huge bar. Our server was on his first day on the job, but he was a good guy. Then we had the chips and salsa, which were good. Cheese quesadillas are a good appetizer. This was probably the best food we had for the night. And then the rajas taco was ok. Maybe I should've chosen that other mushroom one. Maybe they could have more taco options for vegetarians. That's all I've tried. Next time I want to try the enchiladas as well. The menu asks you to ask the server for happy hour appetizer specials, but my server wouldn't tell me. He said it was basically over (ends at 6). So, I ordered Wednesdays special which starts at 6 and he said I had to wait until 6...so, I can't order happy hour or the special. So, I waited and ordered the steak fajitas. The steak was so chewy and overcooked. I couldn't even eat it. Wasted $15 on those. The veggies were fresh, but undercooked and lacked flavor. Only good part was the guac that came with the fajitas. Also note the fajitas are not served with cheese, sour cream or tomatoes/salsa but also not served with cilantro/onions and lime. Disappointing visit. This is such a cute place that we stumbled upon while walking near Millennium Park. With so many authentic and delicious taco places in Chicago, Gordo's Tiny Taco Bar was disappointing. Cochinita pibil, again, tough one to get right especially when you've had the authentic stuff in Mexico. Didn't like this take, at all. Probably my least favorite of the bunch. We ordered takeout from here a couple nights ago and we're very disappointed. The tacos weren't filled and lacked flavor. If you request a taco be made without one of the ingredients they ignore your notes. I ordered the special, shrimp adobo taco, Al pastor, and Rojas. My husband ordered similar items, we also got two empanadas, one shrimp and one chicken and a small horchata. The empanadas came with a creamy green sauce that was decent and the tacos came with red and green salsa which were pretty tasty. The horchata wasn't bad but didn't taste authentic, it tasted more like Cinnamon Toast Crunch in a cup. Overall, this place wasn't awful but there are so many great authentic taco places in the city that I wouldn't feel inclined to retuned. read more

Good enough if you need a quick bite for lunch. The entrance for this is at the back by the Lakeshore East Park. I could get there easily from Swissotel by taking the east exit and going down the stairs outside. They make their own lemonade here. It is not very sweet which I appreciate! Since the empanadas are made with wheat flour and I'm gluten-free, I ordered tacos on corn tortillas: Pastor without onions - this was the second best. It still had onions in it but they were easy to pick out. I should have eaten it first though. It was cold by the time I ate it. Chicken without pico - this was the most plain. The Pico de Gallo must really carry this option! I did not finish it. Carnitas without onions - this was the better of the two. Very moist. No peppers (must be mixed already with the onions) but the jalapeños helped with the flavor and moisture level. The tacos came out fast but I was there just after they opened they fill up very quickly for lunch so get here early. read more

We've came here twice now, once during cinco de Mayo and last night for taco Tuesday. Each time we had incredible service from David! The chips seem store bought and stale. Salsa is good but also seems store bought. Tacos and empanadas are really good but extremely greasy! I LOVEEEE Mexican food but this place is unfortunately too greasy for me. The margs are great though! Love that you can ask for a spicy jalapeño marg also! $5 during happy hour! The restaurant itself is cute but lacking something.. maybe more decor, better music, can't quite put my finger exactly on it. Writing this review for Taco Tuesday. I came here yesterday for a margarita and to sample the "taco flight" (3 street tacos of choice). I have not been in this spot since it was the former Mezcalina (RIP). Many of the details are the same, and, most importantly, the food and service are as excellent as they were in the previous incarnation. This was a great way to kick off the return of happy hour specials. I opted to sit indoors as it was sprinkling, but felt confident in doing so thanks to the sanitation protocols in place. I hope to be back soon, possibly to sample the brunch offerings and outdoor seating options.
