I'm not sure how I've never reviewed this Hugo's spot, but this may be my favorite given it's regional focus on Oaxacan cuisine. From the margaritas, to moles, this place has it all. The staff are attentive and the space open and beautiful for a hotel. Definitely check out the mole sampler, and the cricket tacos can be fun. It's hard to summarize the rest of the menu, as I've eaten alot of it over the years, between dinner and lunch dates. Never had a complaint here, and will continue taking friends and family any time they ask for traditional mex-mex. read more

What a wonderful experience giggly squad had tonight at Xochi this date. On arrival, Diego made us feel welcome and immediately offered recommendations for a top notch experience including multiple other attentive staff. The ambience was speckled with day of the dead skeletons which was very on brand for our October dinner. The greatest margarita is a must, we specifically recommend getting it spicy. However some of our guest preferred the "nervous traveler" for a more mezcal smoke. We were pleasantly surprised by the empanadas specifically, with staff being very amenable to our allergy restrictions. The Oaxacan pizza was a plethora of flavors on the tongue and opened our mind to new olfactory exploration. The barbacoa was fall off the bone phenomenal including a delectable sauce causing mouth watering responses from the table. To end a wonderful dinner we had the experience of table side hot chocolate and churros that made us feel like we were on the oaxacan polar express. We ate here on a Saturday evening without a reservation. On arrival we were seated quickly in the outdoor space, which was really pleasant. Our order was taken quickly and the food arrived at a nice pace (neither too fast nor too slow). We had the mole selection and oysters to start, followed by a salad, the octopus, the pork shank special, and sides of green beans and cauliflower for our entree. What a great disappointment! I was really looking forward to have this brunch today October 20 ; since we were celebrating my mom's 79 Birthday. The food was cold the coffee was cold the service was mediocre had to ask the waiter 3 times for coffee refills and water. For $45 dollars a person one would tink they be on top of chancing silverware without asking for them as well as refilling coffee or water . I made this reservation in advanced and they did ask me if we were celebrating something; at that moment I did mention it was my moms birthday birthday so in my mid I was expecting some kind of celebration like singing o something not that my mom needed that but then why ask if there was a celebration? If they don't do something especial. We have been to Xochi once before fore for a Mother's Day maybe 5 years ago and the experience was amazing the food had a great variety and it was hot and delicious. I have also been to other restaurants owned by chef Hugo; but unfortunately his visit to Xochi was such a disappointment! Ambiance is very hip and lively and modern. Food was delicious. If you like mole dishes I would try the mole sampler. I found this dish to be so unique for someone who loves to try different moles. Don't be intimidated by the insects on some of the dishes. Our waiter pointed it out when we ordered and we were able to omit them. Shifting menus depending on hour and day, with some overlap. I visited on an early spring Saturday early afternoon (brunch menu) as well as Sunday morning (buffet menu) at opening hour (opens at 10). Despite being less than 24 hours apart, the experiences were different. During the Saturday early afternoon brunch I tried a series of corn-based menu items. I started with the Huitlasquites soup. The soup is composed of three forms of corn -- corn fungus, corn kernels, and a crisp dried corn tortilla. The corn fungus -- huitlacoche (pronounced whee-tla-KO-che) is a grey blue fungus that grows on non-genetically modified corn, and as such has been historically integrated in Mexican cuisine. This corn fungus is used to create the earthy, dark moss colored soup base. Corn kernels added texture and flavor contrast with their sweetness. Finally, rounds of queso fresco topped with slices of jalapeño pepper were melted onto a crisp corn tortilla. The crisp tortilla was covered by the dark moss green-colored soup base, giving the appearance that the cheese rounds were floating. Each provided a different texture and flavor, while collectively resulting in a complex soup. Camarones Istmenos followed. Large shrimp marinated in chile and garlic infused oil are placed over a mound of rice bound with creamy cheese (much like Italian Risotto) and speckled with corn kernels. The dish arrived shortly after receiving the soup. I had not anticipated they would be served together. Either due to having been overcooked by chef, or having been prepared for service much earlier, the shrimp were rubbery in texture and tightly curled. (Most likely the latter as the contents were room temperature, unlike the piping hot soup.) Nonetheless, the plating was thoughtful and attractive. A chose something unfamiliar, a cool anchiote salt dipped glass of smoky Mezcal with mango and lime. It seems to complement the shrimp dish. Following the corn theme, I ventured to try the Helado de Elote -- corn custard ice cream with crisp corn cookie and corn whisky infused ice cream. It was spectacularly plated, and seemed to be more of an end of meal palate cleanser as the flavors were subtle. Espresso was served with this. The service was friendly and very informative about both the options and the culinary traditions. The next day I visited during Sunday buffet brunch. This seemed like a great way to be introduced to the cuisine, making it easier to order from the daily menu. Ceviche de Rabalo Verde, Tre Leche cake, and citrus salad stood out to me. This was a different experience in there was little encounter with servers, brunch is prix fix. The server forgot to bring espresso and after I inquired it arrived clearly after a trip to microwave as the cup was too hot to handle. A cocktail was brought without my confirmation of this choice (I had asked to check out the buffet first) and there was no comment made when it remained untouched. This service can be characterized as careless. It was great to try unfamiliar food, and I look forward to return, but it seems service does not match the food and dining experiences will likely vary. read more

We came here based on a recommendation from someone at the hotel and it was just a huge miss for us . Our waitress wasn't overall very helpful in her recommendations first off . For drinks I ordered the pink Escalade margarita it wasn't that great - tasted like grapefruit juice and tequila . For app we got the ahi tuna crudo app - it was served like a ceviche with crisps on the side . - overall ok . My husband got the barbicoa meal ( the meat was so tough and chewy I couldn't swallow it . I played it safe and got the Memela which was good ! But tbh it reminded me of something I order from the local taco truck for $3 . When it came time for dessert we ordered the tres leche which was chocolate and the reason I'm giving 2 stars not 1 .. THE TRES LECHE was amazing. So good . They also sent out a complimentary flan that said " happy birthday " on it vs " happy anniversary " - we couldn't help but laugh bc it just fit the less than desirable meal . PARKING: It's $8 to valet if you decide to dine in here. Considering your meal will cost you a little under $50 after tax and 20 percent tip, it doesn't hurt to find street parking (free on Sunday). Xochi is truly an experience, especially during their Sunday brunch buffet. They have a beautiful assortment of dishes that aren't common at most other brunch buffets around Houston, mainly because their cuisine is based from Oaxaca. My favorites are the tamales, migas, and all the veggie dishes. Honestly, everything was pretty good. The only constructive comment I would say is that the BBQ meat was a little dry. There were also bugs in my food and I ate it. They serve meal worms and crickets in some of their dishes (similar to their brother restaurant, Hugo's). It definitely adds fun conversations at the table and interesting social media posts, but I wasn't a big fan of the taste or texture. The service is top notch. Major thanks to our servers who made our experience even more enjoyable. They were polite and always came by our table to clean and take special orders. When it was time to cut our birthday cake (we bought elsewhere), they even offered to cut it for us which was very nice. I would definitely come back one day for their Sunday brunch buffet. With the price tag of $34 a person (almost $50 after tax and tip), I would treat this as a special occasions type of place. Truly glad I was able to dine here. read more

The wife and I came here for a pre-valentines happy hour / dinner. Didn't realize it was a UFC fight night in Houston. We sat at the bar and had a down grilled oysters and almost every plate on the bar bites menu. Tuna and the tostada where stand outs but every item we had was amazing. The service was like that of a michelin starred restaurant. Fresh plates and cutlery with each plate. We were checked on enough but not hovering. We had a couple drinks and sampled so mezcal from the spirit library. The bartender had some great recommendations and brought the bottles so we could see what we were trying. I will say ordering from the HH bar bites menu I am not sure if you really save money, but you get to try a bunch of different plates and they are all good and very complex. read more

At the suggestion of Hugo's owner Evelyn F (see my Hugo's review), we subsequently DID indeed try one of her other restaurants, Xochi, for a Friday night delivery on July 15th 2023 via Favor and we're not impressed -- usually high-end restaurants pride themselves on the quality/taste of their food, as well as the presentation of their food, and the restaurant's ambiance, so please let me explain my 3-star rating of Xochi... Xochi should probably not offer their food via delivery service because our experience felt like their was no quality control of the delivery which, in turn, effected the taste of their food -- and that was a real shame. Our bill totaled $174.13 (including delivery fee + generous tip, which was paid before delivery). In retrospect, it wasn't the best way to experience Xochi because our hot food arrived barely warm and our cold dessert (Helado de Elote), arrived warm and melted since it was stacked on top of our entrees (which were probably hot at the time they were packed?). If that's the delivery experience for Xochi then I suggest you consider discontinuing delivery service? I know it's IS possible to receive the "correct temperature" of delivery food because we regularly order delicious takeout from all around Houston. When placing our online order, we requested the Chapulines be omitted from one of our dishes (Molotes de Xoxocotlan) -- since we just weren't in the mood for them that night -- but your staff didn't read through our order completely so they loaded up the dish with them :( Not cool. As for the actual "taste" of our Xochi food: the delicious (albeit lukewarm) Memela was the most flavorful thing we ordered that night and the most tolerable dish to eat at a lukewarm temp. So yes, to that dish! :) We were craving a tasty masa dish that night but unfortunately, the Molotes de Xoxocotlan tasted under-seasoned and was served without enough of the mole coloradito sauce so it ended up tasting rather "flabby". My husband wanted to try the Taquitos Dorados on the menu but although somewhat tasty, the lukewarm temp was a turnoff so he tried to zap it for 15 seconds in the microwave which ultimately ended up bringing forth just a "fried" flavor but not the tasty flavor of the filling. Overall, it was a very pricey but lackluster (delivery) experience from Xochi and we've decided to make a future reservation in order to experience Xochi's food at the correct temperature and to enjoy the ambiance. We will definitely try Xochi in person, but we suggest you better monitor the food that goes out via Favor delivery or alternatively, discontinue delivery service if you have such limited control over it. The food at Xochi is too precious to leave in the hands of delivery workers not invested in your restaurant's food quality. read more

Superb. Such a wonderful meal at Xochi. If Michelin began awarding stars in Houston, Hugo Ortega would definitely be in the running. Since dining at two Michelin rated Oaxcan restaurants in NYC (Claro and Oxomoco), I have fallen in love with the food - and as amazing the meals I have had in these places, the chefs are not Mexican (not to take anything away from these stellar restaurants)....and still not having the opportunity to travel to Oaxaca, I was really looking forward to try food from a chef that is both native and immigrant from the area, a James Beard winning one no less. First of all, that struck me is that the place is posh. It's located on the first floor of one of the nicest lobbies in a Marriott I have ever seen. Even in such a nice setting, the restaurant doesn't seem stuffy at all - you'll see people dressing from smart casual all the way to formal. Service itself is incredibly friendly and attentive. Started with a couple of cocktails, with our favorite being a mezcal one with roasted corn and chili (can't remember the name, but loved it!). The mole tasting is the one thing I highly recommend getting - the moles are each so unique and delicious, and if you can keep them on the table for the rest of the meal to use them however you see fit. Also the Hongos en Mole Amarillo was fabulous - the mushroom flavor was perfect, and they are accompanied by some of the best tortillas I have ever had. We also go the goat tacos - by this point I was already full, and I think the richness and saltiness of the goat (which is a monster serving) just put me over the edge. The octopus was tender and flavorful with pairings along side the plate. For my main, I chose the shrimp dish. The 3 prawns were done well with head on. The rice was cooked with seafood and the mussels were soft and tender. It is one of the best plated seafood dishes. One tell tale sign of good seafood, is if nothing gets stuck between the teeth . For dessert, we couldn't resist the chocolate caliente. Though it wasn't as thick nor spicy as Mexican chocolate, it was more for drinking than dipping. We went on Sunday for the brunch and was pleasantly surprised that it was a buffet! The food offered during this time are the main entrees usually served for dinner. We tried a little bit of everything and saved room for dessert. The food is extremely unique. The mole sauce was full of flavor. The brisket freshly carved was juicy and succulent. I really enjoyed the shrimp ceviche and broccolini. They had several meat choices and even vegetarian options. Though it's a bit pricey for a brunch, we were very satisfied.
