I'm not sure if it's officially called Popcorn Pawz or Riverdale Grooming, but either way -- this…read moreplace is like popcorn for my dog's paws... comforting, warm, and puts a smile on both our faces. I brought my dog in for a full grooming session and walked away seriously impressed. The groomer who worked with him has been grooming professionally for over 30 years -- and that level of experience showed in every detail. My dog looked amazing: beautifully trimmed, relaxed, and not the least bit anxious. He even walked out with a little extra bounce in his step like he knew he looked good. Before coming here, I had read some negative reviews, and honestly, I'm glad I trusted my own instincts -- because my experience couldn't have been more different. Let me address a few of the complaints I saw online: "The staff is rude or unfriendly"? Not at all. I found the team to be welcoming, patient, and clearly focused on the animals. They listened to what I wanted, asked questions to make sure they got it right, and treated my dog with genuine care. "Bad communication or language barriers"? Completely untrue in my visit. They spoke clearly, explained the grooming process, and confirmed every detail before starting. Even if someone's first language isn't English, their professionalism and love for animals come through loud and clear. "Pets are handled roughly"? Absolutely not. I observed how they treated my dog -- and others -- and saw only kindness and patience. My own dog is a little nervous around strangers and especially sensitive about his paws, and the groomer handled him so gently it was like they'd known each other for years. This is not some flashy pet spa trying to upsell you treats and bandanas. This is an experienced, neighborhood grooming spot where animals come first, and the people working here know exactly what they're doing. You can tell they've built trust with long-time clients over the years -- and now I understand why. So, whether you call it Popcorn Pawz or Riverdale Grooming -- this place is a gem. Great service, skilled grooming, fair pricing, and most importantly, my dog left looking and feeling fantastic. I'll definitely be back -- and my dog is already wagging his tail at the thought.

I gave the owner/groomer explicit instructions that NO hair was to be cut, trimmed, clipped or shaved (ex between her paw pads). She violated these directives and made a mess of my dog''s coat. Her coat has been clipped short and unevenly; the long dense feathers on her belly and legs have been trimmed and thinned raggedly, and entirely cut away between her hind legs; she was given a rough blunt sanitary trim; there are blotchy areas that are chopped to less than 1/2"; her head and legs have been shaved, and her ears cut lopsidedly; and her long thick ruff is cut short and thinned. Ironically the hair between her paw pads was not touched; I told the owner this is the one area where she could be trimmed. She didn't even brush her out; she has been shedding all over my furniture. The owner denies she did anything more than bathe her (and says she has a video to prove it). This is simply not true; my dog's coat is proof enough (and I have taken photos to document it). I have consistently worked to preserve my dog's thick, full-bodied coat and dense, long feathers. The quality of her double coat has been compromised, as have the insulation and protection it offers. It will take months with careful, consistent grooming for it to return- I hope- to its natural state. If you want your dog's naturally lush double coat preserved, and your instructions followed with honest communication, avoid this business.

Given his thick, curly, and matted coat, his grooming was significantly overdue and necessitated the expertise of a skilled professional. Upon scheduling the appointment, I was uncertain about the groomer who would attend to Henry. Although I had encountered some of the most unfavorable reviews for other establishments, Petco in Riverdale received comparatively more positive feedback. As Henry's grooming was urgent, I reserved the earliest available slot. Our groomer was Simon, who exemplified professionalism! Simon demonstrated politeness, confidence, and professionalism right from the start. He quickly reassured me of his abilities and eased any worries about entrusting Henry to what was in store for him- an overdue grooming session. Simon created a warm and safe atmosphere, mindful of Henry's tendency toward anxiety in unfamiliar settings. Simon demonstrated exceptional attentiveness by reviewing Henry's specific requirements in advance and ensuring VIP care. Furthermore, Simon proactively contacted me prior to Henry's appointment to inquire if an earlier time could be arranged, and he explicitly conveyed that no dog should be hurried--an aspect I greatly appreciated. When I arrived, Simon checked us in and reviewed Henry's vaccination records to ensure everything was up to date. I appreciated his dedication to safety, as such carefulness regarding the safety and health of pets and staff is uncommon today. I really valued Simon's thoroughness! Simon dedicated his efforts to grooming Henry from 1 PM to 4:45 PM, carefully attending to all necessary grooming tasks for Henry, i.e., bathing, de-matting, shaving, teeth cleaning, and nail clipping. The list goes on, as Henry required the full range of grooming services! Despite Henry's challenging coat, Simon was transparent about the grooming process, kept me informed, and requested additional time to ensure a superior result. He handled Henry's anxiety with great care and showed a deep understanding of how to work with this breed's natural tendencies toward nervousness and needing reassurance. Simon empathized with Henry's emotional needs and endeavored to soothe him during grooming. He often updated me via text message--an available communication feature at Petco--and was receptive to my suggestions for handling Henry's sensitivity. These updates from Simon were invaluable and reassured me that my dog was in good hands. When I arrived early for Henry's pick-up, Simon graciously informed me that Henry needed additional grooming and invited me to watch, which I found especially thoughtful. Subsequently, he provided a comprehensive care plan tailored to Henry's specific breed and coat. Simon's extensive knowledge, kindness, and sincere concern exemplify his professionalism as a groomer, especially suitable for dogs with nervous or high-maintenance dispositions. I wholeheartedly recommend Simon to anyone seeking a compassionate and professional grooming experience at the Riverdale Petco location. I, of course, have scheduled a follow-up appointment for Henry with Simon. I am exceedingly pleased that Henry and I were fortunate to be placed under Simon's care--an instance of fortuitous discovery! I no longer need to continue searching, as I have found Henry's preferred, top-tier groomer. I highly encourage Riverdale/Bronx area residents to entrust their pets to Simon for grooming services. Both you and your pet will undoubtedly appreciate Simon's outstanding work. Thank you once again, Simon!

I took my kitten to get a SNAP test for FeLV and FIV today 8/22 at 4:30 pm. I knew he could very…read moreskittish as he has never been to a vet before. The first thing that greatly concerned me is where they test & vaccinate. It is on the open floor with no door enclosing your pet. This is a nightmare for skittish cat owners; there are plenty of dogs roaming and a motion censored door not far away. Had he ran, he could've hid anywhere in the store, or worse, ran into the parking lot. My kitten was indeed skittish, and in turn was handled quite aggressively. He was burrito'ed in a blanket to stop him from moving, but in that was being strangled by it around his neck. He was in EXTREME distress wherein his third eyelid came down over his eyes. His leg was being pulled in a position that appeared painful and this went on for two vials of blood. I understand it's hard to do this with a scared and wiggly kitten, but I have never seen any of my cats in distress like this, nor heard any of them scream in that way. It was forceful to the point where I feared he wasn't breathing. I was so afraid for him I started crying. I would have appreciated a pause in the test so he can calm down, or even some kind acknowledgement or soothing words to the kitty. I would have been happy to bring him back another day with gabapentin in his system. Once the exam was done, they put him in his case. The person who drew blood said to the other, "check his leg." I was legitimately afraid it could've been sprained. There was a spot of I'm not sure-- blood or feces-- on the carrier where they put him. They said nothing and zipped him up. I tried to converse with them to soothe my stress about what just happened. The person who drew the blood was extremely dismissive. I asked her if they had anything I could give him. She coldly replied "you need to go to the vet for that." (The other person working gave me a churu for him, so thank you.) Still, neither acknowledged my kitten after-- no soothing tone or pet or look in his eyes. Person I've been describing said I can go home and get the results email unless it showed up positive. While on line one of them came up to tell me the tests were negative. No check in on the kitten who was screaming in the carrier. Again, I understand it's hard to do this with a wiggly cat. Still-- not having an enclosed space, and having a tech/vet with such little compassion made this all the more a horrible experience

To cut it short we stopped in today after getting out from work. The store was lock, perhaps for security matters. I proceeded in ringing the doorbell. It looked like there was no one on sight. Out of a corner a Caucasian woman emerged, I assume it right after the events unfolded. This woman seem like she did not one to let us in. First hand she semi open the door and asked us very rudely what did we want? I was very surprise by the attitude and the stern dislike look in her face mind you no good afternoon or any courtesy greeting. I blurted out that I needed products to control fleas for our dog. She decided to let us in, my husband felt offended with her attitude and we decided to leave right after we step in. Why spend money where you are clearly not value as a potential customer? Seriously what was her problem? Obviously anyone that comes to your store is to either purchase something or might have a question. So, why have a business open if you cannot be courteous to your neighbors? She than got upset and blurt something out, I told her plain and simple that she was being a racist, why do you have a business in the Bronx? I mean Kingsbridge is predominantly African Americans, Hispanics, Asians, Albanians and Greeks. So if you can't stand Spanish or whatever particular races you have issues with than you should rethink your location. I am rather offended because she than decided to follow us out and stared taking picture of our car. Like seriously what do you think, we wanted to rob your store or what? Did she assume this because I am Hispanic? This is just intolerable; we are in NEW YORK. I really hope that people think twice about doing business with someone with her behavior. I know I am certainly letting everyone know about this incident.
