I'm giving this clinic an "okay" review. Prices are a bit higher than average, which I can understand for the location. My main issue is that you cannot stay with your pet during exams. At almost every other vet I have used, except emergency hospitals, I have been able to be present for exams, vaccines, and procedures to comfort my pet. I was told this was a COVID policy, but years later it is still enforced and it feels outdated. Another concern is privacy. Sensitive conversations are held in the lobby in front of everyone, which feels uncomfortable. Even large corporations like Petco state on their website that pet parents are allowed to stay with their animals during visits. If a corporation can allow it, a smaller clinic should too. The staff and doctors themselves are fine, but these policies take away from the good work they are trying to do. Overall the clinic is okay, yet the approach feels cold and out of touch with the needs of both pets and their owners. read more

2024 was a tough year for my family. Two of our senior cats fell ill and we chose to euthanize. Murphy was 18, Boots was 23-24. We adopted both of our boys at the CACC on the same day in 2008. The care, compassion, consideration and love we received from Riverdale Veterinary Center on Johnson Ave was so appreciated and will never be forgotten. Our fur babies are our FAMILY. Special thanks to the Vet Tech Dom(Dominique) who was an absolute ANGEL and Dr Chang who understood our grief and held space for us until we were able to compose ourselves today. I bought my cat here because he had suddenly lost an alarming amount of weight. $1000 dollars later he is much better. Great! The problem is that when I talked to the vet on the phone he told me to finish all the medication. One of those was a steroid. When I tried to ask if this advice applied to that medication he just talked fast and loud over me repeating " take all the medication until gone." Now I find out that abruptly stopping steroids is quite dangerous and they need to be tapered down gradually. This is unconscionable. I bet that if my pet was still sick and potentially up for more treatment costing more money he would have gladly spent a little more time considering the medication. I would advise others to look for a more ethical veterinary practice. read more

I used to go to a different place when I rescued my dog but it would typically get really crowded and not convenient for my schedule. Riverdale Veterinary Group has been so good to me and my girl. She is now 7 and needs immunotherapy drops and medication for different types of allergies and when her primary dermatologist closed practice the doctors at this location made sure I was not left out in the cold. They took over the prescription so I could have the refills available, and I am so grateful. I bring her for bi-annual checkups, nail trims, and her regular preventative vaccines. I like the fact that they not far from home and open 7 days a week. The whole team here is amazing specially Isabel who recently swiftly helped me schedule an appointment for a vaccination. I had an awful experience here: 1) All pet problems get talked about in front of everyone in the waiting room, so don't expect privacy--this was pretty unusual 2) You don't get to watch them handle your dog; actually, they took a blood test from my dog without asking me (when my dog was with them in the private room) and then later we determined it was not a necessary procedure (heart worm test, had already had one the same year) 3) The vet offered to "price-match" meds which felt very car-salesman-y. What is this, Walmart? 4) The vet had "forgotten his prescription pad" so I needed to come back if I wanted the script 5) $80 for a visit 6) I was worried about my rescue's teeth and the vet told me my dog's teeth were fine--a few weeks later they started falling out and her next vet recommended removing 11 of them. Her teeth and breath are excellent now and she seems to be in far less pain 7) I was worried about my rescue's anxiety (she had had a rough life) and asked about puppy prozac. The vet patronizingly asked me, "Is this your first dog? Just buy her a toy. She'll become addicted to prozac." Her next vet prescribed a low dose of prozac and she's done amazing with it read more

I'm still a loyal customer to this Vet for 6+ years. I love the staff, they're extremely helpful, and they are sure to let you know what needs to be done moving forward to secure the proper treatment of your pet. My only complaint is that they're quite expensive. But I get It, the neighborhood they're in, I'm sure rent isn't cheap for the building they're in. I just feel you can find similar options for care elsewhere at a fraction of the price. None the less, this establishment is awesome and they do their job extremely well. read more

I am so disappointed that i don't even know where to start. This place is a business that just want to make money and do not care about your pet. I really wish i could give them - 0 stars! Stay away from this place if you love your pet! The only reason i came here is because i needed to update my frenchie vaccines for an event i was attending to and unfortunately my vet did not have any appointment available before the event. Since i live around, i decided to come here. I waited over an hour after my appointment time. The staff is very rude and unprofessional. As soon as i walked in i felt a weird, they took my frenchie and didn't let me go inside with him (this was before covid) i don't know what they did to him or who did it. I took my Baby to neutered after she had a cyst rapture on her breast. Surgery was great and so was everyone else. My only problem is when I request a cleaning for her teeth they would go around on the price detailing well we might have to extract or do more we can't give you an extract price. When i insisted on a estimate it continued to show procedures I didn't request with a estimate of almost $900. I ended up taking my time and did a plaque clean up on my dog for free. This is an email sent to the practice on 11/5/21. Three days later I received a response saying the owner of the practice was going to reach out to me. As of yet I have had no contact from them. " Good Afternoon, I have been wanting to bring this situation to your attention for some time, but I wanted to gather my thoughts. I have two fur babies that have been patients at your practice for their entire lives. I've never once had a major complaint or any kind of problem with the practice. That is until recently. On 10/9 my dog presented with shortness of breath and we took her to the animal hospital. On that date she was diagnosed with with secondary lung cancer. We were given steroids and advised to follow up with her regular veterinarian. I called your office on Monday 10/11 asking to see either Dr. Tucker or another physician who would be available to see us. I was abruptly and rudely told that there was nothing available until the next Monday 10/18. I explained that my dog was just diagnosed with cancer and I needed some help, and again this gentleman very rudely just repeated himself that there was nothing available that week. On Tuesday 10/12 I called made an appt for Monday 10/18. I asked for a Dr. to call me because I had questions concerning my dog's quality of life due to her diagnosis. I had never had a terminally ill animal before. I was scared and felt completely helpless and was hoping to get some guidance. I did not receive a call. I called again on Wednesday. No return call. I called again on Thursday and again no return call. As fate would have it Cecelia's health deteriorated and we had to euthanize her on Saturday 10/16. My dog was a patient in your practice for all 14 years of her life, and my cat is currently still a patient. We have spent cumulatively thousands of dollars over the last 14 years, but aside from that I've always had the utmost confidence in this practice. I needed guidance as to how to adequately gauge her quality of life along with several other end of life and hospice care questions from her physician but instead I ended up turning to google which is in no way a substitution for medical guidance. Perhaps it's just my grief making me lash out in a way that is not typical of me, but please in the future do better if someone calls you with questions about their terminally ill baby." read more

Edit: I had to edit this review as we spent over 700$ on two visits for my cat and the condition she had was not diagnosed. The first time we were sent home being told that nothing was wrong. The second time they did see an issue but could not offer a diagnosis or solution that worked. We had to go to another vet; and turns out she had an aggressive cancerous tumor on her leg that required an amputation. We are currently in the process of surgery with another vet. This clinic is good if nothing is wrong with your pet. It may be good just for shots or basic issues, but not for something life threatening from our experience. I am sad to give Riverdale Vet a one star review. My pets (Nori and Lucy) are patients here for over 5 years and I never had a problem. The front desk staff is friendly, the doctors are knowledgeable. However, I arrived 10 minutes early for Nori's appointment today and was told to have a seat. Slowly but surely, the waiting room began getting crowded. Social distancing was not enforced so I asked the friendly receptionist if I could wait outside and have her call me when the Vet was ready for Nori. She confirmed my number and I went outside. I walked Nori. I sat at the bench. Please note, it was 30 degrees outside. 15 minutes later, I went back inside to check the status of my appointment and simply to warm up cause it was cold. Josh, the manager, greeted me with a "Ma'am, I am going to ask you to wait outside". I tried to reply with the fact that I was already outside for 15 minutes although I arrived early for my appointment. Josh cut me off mid sentence, raised his voice (thinking I didn't hear him the first time), and again told me to wait outside. I again tried to explain that I was there before... Josh would not listen. I lowered my mask to speak because I was under the impression Josh could not hear me or understand me but then Josh really got loud and said, "Ma'am! We are in a pandemic and you have taken off your mask! Please leave, now!" At this point, I informed the receptionist that I was going to write a review on Yelp and Facebook regarding this poor service and Josh again asked me to leave. After further consideration, I decided not to leave out of principle. I told them I would not leave and I didn't care if they called the cops. Josh truly told the receptionist to call 911. When the police officers arrived, they heard both sides. I highlighted how although they tell you "one person per pet", the waiting room was full of pets with multiple adults accompanying them. I highlighted how I volunteered to wait outside in 30 degree weather although everyone else was already waiting comfortably inside. I explained that my pets are both patients there for five years and I simply wanted the vet to see my dog. Josh refused. Josh told the officers he wanted me to leave. The two officers were in disbelief and encouraged me to report them to the BBB. In an effort to resolve the issue, I asked Josh, "would you really prefer that I file a complaint to the BBB instead of treating my dog?" Josh replied, "your one measly review is not going to hurt us, we have thousands of positive reviews" And so I'm here. The doctors allowed this man to turn away a loyal pet / customer. As I stated earlier, I am sad to write this and have experienced this horrific visit to our vet. I reiterate: even the police officers were in disbelief! Recommendations: The front desk must schedule appointments in such a manner that everyone does not show up at the same time crowding the waiting area. I love doctors Fried and Emmerich and Stacy and Tracy at the front desk. i don't like the big guy who is the "manager" on weekends - he once made me wait outside in 22 degree weather during the pandemic because my dog was getting groomed and did not have a vet appt. He also once made a vet appt for me, I wrote it down, and when I got there it was on their scheduoe for a different day. The only bad apple. Everything and everyone else is the absolute best and on the money all the time. Dr Fried is a top diagnostician and his staff of mostly female vet associates and most of the vet techs really care about the animals and will talk to you until you understand what is going on. So try to go on any weekday - they are even open on holidays. Very dedicated. read more

After being loyal here and taking our 2 cats and 1 dog here for FOUR YEARS our dog was sick and we made an appointment to take her in. We gave them the courtesy of calling to let them know we had car troubles on the way and would be arriving late. On the phone, they said "okay no problem." No mention of this effecting the appointment. Then we get there and they let us sit around for 40 minutes without a word said to us after checking in, before THEN telling us that our dog would have to be seen after every single other animal that day because we were late. When we asked what time that would be, they said they had "no idea". After that level of disrespect, lack of understanding, lack of compassion, and lack of transparency about their policies, we are never ever bringing our animals back here again. These people do not give a shit about animals or people at all. After 4 years of being loyal patients they couldn't even have the common courtesy to tell me on the phone that my dog would be seen last and instead tricked us into waiting over 40 minutes for absolutely nothing. We have been taking my 150 lb fur baby here for 9 years. No one has ever tried to rack up the bill, as others have implied. In fact, if anything they have always been very conservative in their management of any issues he has had. Dr Fried as also taken care of my children's smaller pets - hamsters and rats. It's hard to find an exotic vet. We have also boarded him there and the locksmith next door tells me that he has seen the staff play with him when we have done so. Usually their front desk is good, except this morning. I was there around 10:05am -10:10am July 2 2022 to pick up prescription that I ordered. The lady wasn't nice front beginning. After when she pass me the prescription, I asked politely to have envelope to put prescription. She said "no". That's it. I thought maybe she didn't hear clearly what I said(because I was wearing mask and I do have accents). Therefore I asked her again, then she said " I said no". She also raised her voice up. Wow, that was shock to me. She might not in good mood but it's so unprofessional. I decided not to go in this time never again. Dr. Fried has been my vet for many many many years, but over the past couple of years the service from front desk staff and the manager has really deteriorated. It is very sad because Dr. Fried is an amazing doctor but the treatment that one receives really makes you question wether you should return. My last visit was one month ago, I didn't receive any news and when I called I was faced with "no results" because they didn't draw enough blood to begin with and they never called me to follow up. To add salt to the wound I spent a few minutes going back and forth with the manager because he "LOVES" to argue with the patients. There is ZERO accountability on their part. I transferred my four fur babies from Yonkers Animal hospital to the Riverdale veterinary group and I have been so...satisfied with care that was given to my pets. I have two cats, a dog -Shiba Inu and Guinea pig and they were attended to with the upmost care and compassion. All the vets are good and the prices are reasonable. Recently my daughters Guinea pig had an episode of rectal bleeding. I called for an emergency appointment and the front staff assured me that they had to ask Dr.Fried if he could see my daughters precious Hazelnut. Dr.Fried agreed to see Hazelnut and was treated . We called up the office, read the medication off the bottle to the receptionist. They said they'd re-fill it. I went to pick it up. When I got home it was the wrong medication. (Which is messed up.) We brought it back and he couldn't understand why or what the issue was. That's ok... but he kept insisting we were at fault!!!! I explained that over the phone I read from the spilt bottle the rx. When I couldn't remember the 5 syllable name off the top of my head he basically said, see you don't even know the name. We ended up in a shouting match. My fur baby is a nervous wreck when we go to the vet so I was really surprised when my fur baby let Dr Chang examine her. We have nothing but good things to say about her, she takes the time to explain what's going on with your pup, what the medicine will do to help and course of actions needed to take to make your pup feel better. My crazy pup is ONLY seen by Dr Chang for these reasons as it shows she truly cares for your pups well being. The ladies in the front are also wonderful, there's an older attendant who is just so sweet she is always flexible with scheduling and almost always can get me a same day appointment. They almost killed my cat. Completely negligent. My poor cat had a urinary blockage which meant he accumulated urine in his blood and ultimately experienced kidney failure. These people led us to believe he was in good hands - but really - all they did was not treat him, leave him in a cage for 8 hours while he suffered, only to call us shortly before closing time that he was gravely ill and needed care at a different facility. Great. It gets worse. This other facility told Riverdale that they could not treat my cat and that he needed to go to an emergency animal care facility. Was that message relayed to me? No. What was relayed to me instead was "bring him back here tomorrow." So I didn't know that this second facility couldn't treat my cat until the vet there, in tears, told me what she relayed to Riverdale. Meanwhile, my poor cat continued to suffer. At this point I was told he wouldn't make it through the night. Heartbreaking. I then drove to Cornell Animal Hospital in Stanford. It was a long emotional drive with my cat, who I was just hoping would still be alive when I got there. Cornell saved his life, thank God. But it wasn't cheap. All in, it cost roughly $10,000 to get my cat back to normal. It wasn't easy, either. He needed blood transfusions, catheters, IVs, and lots of medicine. Oh, and you know what I was told when I took him home from Cornell? "He should have been here sooner." I will never, ever, ever go to Riverdale again. You shouldn't trust them with your pet's life. read more

My dog Diesel was very ill and I tried to get him an appointment. They could not see him for about 4 hours. I understand they are not an emergency clinic but he was their patient. My dentist sees emergency patients and sometimes I have to wait. I took him somewhere else and we had to put him down. They did call to follow up and I informed them of what had happened. 6 months later I received an email to schedule a vet appointment for him. The waiting area was spacious, clean and everyone there practiced social distancing. Everyone was very professional! The doctor who saw Joe was Dr. Emmerich. Came home from 4 days away (yes, we had a cat sitter check on the kitties consistently while we were gone) but found our 19 yo Kubi-the-best-cat-ever to be weak and lethargic. Called for an appt and they saw us right away. When a cat is two decades old and that frail, you prepare for anything. Took my teenage son with us- he and Kubi grew up together - and together with the dr we made the decision to put Kubi down. I was feeling overwhelming guilt: why didn't we bring him in before the trip; if I were a better Catmom he wouldn't be so sick; am I giving up on him too soon; am I selfish for wanting to keep him alive no matter what? I was ready to be judged... but all we experienced was empathy and compassion from everyone. They gave my son as much time as he needed to say goodbye to his oldest and dearest friend in the world. The dr patiently explained the process and assured me that I'm not the worst Catmom in history. And they gave Kubi gentle peace, again letting my son linger as long as he needed. Overall, they made our loss and our sorrow manageable, and also sent my son home with a plaster cast of Kubi's wee paws. Every detail, every kind word, it all meant so much to us. read more

If anyone knows me, I'm very hard to please. And when it comes to my dog I'm the biggest pain in the ass. I love my baby and become extra over protective for her. I'm not going to lie. My first impression of riverdale Vet wasn't so sweet I guess they had an off day but after speaking with Stacey and the head doctor, doctor fried, I felt comfortable and my baby would be safe. After my second appt I was sure that this would be the place to take my girl. The staff is great and they are really nice to the animals. I've been to other vets in the Bronx and always felt I was being sucked for my money or the people working there weren't as passionate with the animals as they should. I'm happy I found this place. CUSTOMER SERVICE From vet to receptionist, I found the staff to be super professional and friendly. They did not rush me through the process. Since it was my first time at a vet's office, they patiently explained the process to me. I was very happy with the care they took to heal my kitty cat. I have been bringing my pets here for many years. Dr fried is very kind and very knowledgeable. The vet assistants and reception staff are also very kind and pleasant, which means a lot, especially since many visits are very traumatic fie both the pets and the owners.
