(I'd prefer a 0 rating): Avoid this groomer. On July 3, 2026, I brought my Miniature Australian Shepherd to Universal Pet Care on Mosholu Avenue for a basic bath and nail clip only. I gave the owner/groomer explicit instructions that NO hair was to be cut, trimmed, clipped or shaved (ex between her paw pads). She violated these directives and made a mess of my dog''s coat. Her coat has been clipped short and unevenly; the long dense feathers on her belly and legs have been trimmed and thinned raggedly, and entirely cut away between her hind legs; she was given a rough blunt sanitary trim; there are blotchy areas that are chopped to less than 1/2"; her head and legs have been shaved, and her ears cut lopsidedly; and her long thick ruff is cut short and thinned. Ironically the hair between her paw pads was not touched; I told the owner this is the one area where she could be trimmed. She didn't even brush her out; she has been shedding all over my furniture. The owner denies she did anything more than bathe her (and says she has a video to prove it). This is simply not true; my dog's coat is proof enough (and I have taken photos to document it). I have consistently worked to preserve my dog's thick, full-bodied coat and dense, long feathers. The quality of her double coat has been compromised, as have the insulation and protection it offers. It will take months with careful, consistent grooming for it to return- I hope- to its natural state. If you want your dog's naturally lush double coat preserved, and your instructions followed with honest communication, avoid this business. read more

I brought my little Billy in today for grooming. He's a Havanese & shih-tzu mix. Norelly and her team did a great job with him. He's sometimes nervous but she said there were no issues, and he seemed very happy and excited to show off his new haircut. Highly recommend this place! read more

This place is very nice. The woman is super sweet and is the only staff member I've even seen at the business. Be very specific with what you want. I wasn't and ended up with my dog having an extremely low/buz cut. They always do great work. They usually keep our dogs 1.5 -2 hours. The payment it weird. They do not accept card only cash/Venmo/zelle. That's the weirdest part. Also the pricing seems to vary. One time I paid 45 and one time I paid 65. Good services, weird Payment/pricing. read more

I brought my 4 year old ShiPoo here based on all the rave reviews on Yelp and one personal recommendation. I am highly disappointed to say it is the absolute worst grooming my dog has received in four years. For starters, the groomer was 45 minutes late and had my daughter waiting outside in the cold rain with our dog. We understood our dog was matted and she would require a short haircut - however - the groomer basically shaved our dog down like a skinless cat and made zero effort to actually brush our dog. My dog's once fluffy tail now looks like a think little stick. Lastly, since the groomer couldn't shave my dog's face down like she did the rest of her body, she trimmed her face quite unevenly (one side of the face has longer hair than the other). We will NOT be returning here ever. Not sure what everyone else is/was raving about sadly. I only came here because we moved from Westchester to the Bronx and the trips back up to Hartsdale (my dog's original great groomer) were becoming quite a mission. Lesson learned. We drove past this place once and I wanted to find a cheaper place to get my dog groomed. The groomer here is so nice! She had a great way with my dog (a Pomeranian mutt of some kind) and I love the way she trimmed him. His fur is kind of weird and usually you can see the tracks when he gets shaved down from the razor. But she did a great job and I can't see any tracks at all. We will definitely be coming back here. NEVER RETURNING!So I went to this place super last minute to get a haircut for my pup who's a mix with Bichon frise and toy poodle. His hair was already a bit long and some knotted spots and they shaved his whole fur off! I specifically told them the inspo for the haircut and because to them it was too knotty they trimmed everything off, my dog looks completely different. Also, I've gone to get his grooming before and it has never once happened where they just cut off all the hair, they dematt it but I guess universal pet care doesn't believe in that. Very bad experience with them I will not be going back! Highly do not recommend if your dog has certain type of long hair because they will just do what they want with them! After searching online trying to find a groomer for my 3 month old Cockapoo Nico my prayer was answered. The owner is super sweet and gentle as she eased my fear of having my Nico groomed for the first time. She was quick and even gave me suggestions on training. My Nico was afraid of the noise from the blow dryer, scratched her hand and she was so nice about it knowing that comes with the job. I hate to give an operating business a low rating. I wish I could be writing this review with accolades but sadly I cannot. My one star rating is because this is not the place to take your dog if he/she has long hair. I have a Shih-Poo with long hair. He's been groomed all over the United States. It's expected that a long hair dog will have a few knots, which is why most groomers charge a detangling fee but I could tell from my interactions with the owner that she was not interested in working with a long hair dog. She insisted that the only option was to cut his hair short and ended up practically shaving him. I was very clear about that not being what I wanted. I tried to build a rapport with this business and become a regular customer but I will not return. If your dog needs more than a wash and blow, I would not go here. read more

Amazing!! So Sorry i cant remember her name but i never forget a face & she was amazing. I took my puppy in for her 1st groom on Wednesday she was pretty hairy n had knotting , maltipoo hair is non easy to maintain. I didn't even recognize her when i picked her up she was beautiful and looked so happy.They were so professional and attentive to detail, very clean shop and work area. This groomer does a decent job but nothing to shout about. She did a nice job the first time,but the second visit, she cut my dog and said nothing . I noticed the cut when I got home. It was not a deep cut but it was a cut. Will not take my dog there again because of the lack of honesty and the cut. She is a nice young lady who does a decent job but I had gone to another groomer who did superb job and then,after 8 sessions cut my dog deeply in 3 places. After doing hours of research I came across Universal Pet Care. I Called Saturday and made an appointment for Sunday which worked out perfectly because that's my day off and My appointment was at 11 o'clock. (Very nice on the phone too) I brought our Havapoo to get groomed for the very first time and the owner was very very nice and caring about my dog Luna. It look like we were the first clients there which was awesome because she got to have one on one time with her. I filled out some paperwork, showed her a picture of how I wanted her hair cut to look or close to the picture's haircut. She said it would be a little shorter then the picture because her legs look shorter then the rest of her coat. (I was cutting around her legs due to some matts she had) She told me that she was going to give me a call when she finished Luna's grooming session. I walked around the neighborhood, found a restaurant, got a call Literately an hour later that my Luna was all done. As I was arriving back to the salon all I can think of was how gorgeous my dog was going to look. AND SHE LOOKED BEAUTIFUL. Exactly the cut I asked for and she never looked happier. I'm not in the habit of writing reviews but Universal Pet Care is AWESOME!!!! I'm the proud owner of what used to be for dogs: a Pomeranian named Hercules (subsequently passed away May 4, 2017), a Siberian Husky name Sampson (we call him Icee because of piercing blue eyes), a Pootese named Zeus, and the one that started it all for me Yorkychon named Adonis. I used to go to the Petco to get my dogs groomed but for some reason they didn't come back the way I wanted them to know matter what I described to the groom. My mother was the one who actually found UPC. I wouldn't go anywhere else. I call, make an appointment, drop my dogs off with the description that I want, and I go back to pick them up they know great!!! Norelli is not only a sweet person she's a professional.
