This is my go to place when i'm in the area! The drinks are amazing. I tried their seasonal pumpkin cheese cake latte and omg it was so good. I usually grab a simple matcha or coffee but i went back the next day for another one lol. The sandwiches are so delicious, ive tried about half of them on the menu. Service is always great as the staff is super welcoming. My bestie wanted to try this place out because she got a tiktok on it. Stopped by and wasn't let down! The staff and environment is very welcoming and friendly. There's a lot of seating area to go in, enjoy a coffee and study! I tried a cherry latte (sounded interesting!) and it was really good! The cherry wasn't very strong but you got a little hint of it near the end. My bestie got the espresso cherry cola tonic which was also really good!!! The vibes here are immaculate as it's very laid back and trendy. Everyone from the workers to the customers have a cool/hip vibe that fits well in the camp area. Got the spicy sandwich which had layers of flavor on what I think is focaccia bread. The bread was a little hard compared to the other sando I got but it still worked as a modernized Italian sandwich. The breakfast sando was fluffy all around with the eggs and soft bread with the smokiness of the ham. I think both would be better with a creamier sauce they both kind of just tasted like olive oil which got soaked in the bread. Both were still good though and would recommend. The strawberry vanilla matcha latte was super good as well. The matcha quality was smooth and definitely one of the better ones out there. Service for the drinks were super fast and the workers are nice too. Sandos took around 20 mins but it was pretty crowded since it was a Sunday. I really expected this place to be better! We visited on a Saturday afternoon and it was packed - waited 15 minutes to order. Parking is really tough if you just want go to this cafe and not around the lab. The shop itself is super cute and clean, but I wouldn't recommend for quiet work. They have their wifi posted around the shop. We ordered the matcha lattes with honey and oat milk and they were not good. Didn't even taste the matcha, too much honey and it wasn't mixed well so there were clumps of honey at the bottom, and the oat milk was overpowering. Work in Progress in Costa Mesa is my go-to spot for a consistently great flat white. They use Stereoscope Coffee, but in my opinion, their baristas are even better trained than Stereoscope itself. The roast is a light to medium profile, smooth and balanced. There's always a line out the door, which says a lot, but it moves quickly. The one downside is that they don't use organic milk (like Juliette's and Endless Quest do), but aside from that, I love it! Their pastries are good, but they sell out fast--so if you miss out, you can always grab one next door at Blackmarket Bakery. I stop by about once a week, and it's always worth it. The vibe has a subtle European feel, almost like a café in Spain. Highly recommend! read more

This was a miss for me. Their rosemary latte tasted watered down and lacked flavor. Nothing special stood out from this drink. I am sure some of their other latte items are better. The breakfast burrito was bland and included tater tots, cabbage, and a sauce that didn't complement the burrito all together. The inside of WIP is decently sized with a fair amount of tables and chairs. Not a lot of back support for the chairs as they are boxes, unless you are in the lounge seating. I would not recommend working or studying here at all with a group because the tables are really small with little room for movement. There is one big table in the center, but it gets crowded fairly quick. Also, the WiFi was not working and there were a majority of people using their hotspot and we had to use our hotspot as well. The service was quick and everyone was friendly and welcoming. The decor of the cafe was cozy and contemporary and I did find it relaxing. But given the small space, I found it difficult to concentrate and move around when it was busy and crowded in the cafe. This would be good for a quick coffee chat and go. I hope to return and would give WIP another shot as this was my first impression. read more

I think everyone knows that this is a spot in Orange County that everyone goes to for Matcha and coffee. This is such an IT spot because they do their drink so well and ambience is crazy good. This is a nice little spot in Costa Mesa serving some quality coffee and a nice selection of pastries/sandos. The coffee is super good and I've gotten lattes that were seasonal and also their vanilla lattes. They all do really taste very good and high quality. The food here is pretty good too with the kitchen serving soups and sandwiches that are pretty gourmet. The interior is super big with both indoor and outdoor seating. I used to go to wip a few years ago and it was great. I think quality went down over the years as they went viral. I work in coffee and I will say that their basic espresso drinks (fw, cap, latte) are great and espresso is always dialed in. As for matcha, I would say there's nothing special. For now, I really only come to wip for their food. The am burrito and spicy sando are rlly good! Otherwise, ambiance is very busy and loud so I don't recommend coming here if you're trying to get work done- or atleast bring noise cancelling headphones. Trying to find a seat is typically always a mission too. I recently tried their brown butter graham cracker cream top on a matcha and it literally tasted like nothing lol. The texture was almost like waxy and the only flavor from it was the graham crackers they crushed on top. I would honestly just go to nook across the street for a matcha. Baristas are fine and services is usually good but my recent visit when I tried to give their drinks another shot, it wasn't as busy since I went on a week day and it took the baristas a long time to make one drink and they were standing around and chatting. My son ordered the recommended chicken fried steak breakfast and was truly delighted with it. I had scrambled eggs , toast and fruit. WIP is nice. Been here a few times. Today we got the breakfast burrito - one with bacon, one with pastrami. It is a good meal. I would say that it's not your typical breakfast burrito - there's a lot going on with lots of different ingredients compared to your normal breakfast burrito (beans, curtido, scallions, etc.). I could see why some people would love it but it's just not what I'm really going for when I'm going out for a breakfast burrito. I would say I would get it again, it's definitely quality, just doesn't make it on my top breakfast burritos of all time list. Still love WIP tho My wife also got a mint matcha, which was so nice. Some coffees have that acidic taste to it and theirs is so smooth! I've had the breakfast sando, AM burrito & spicy sando. I love that the food here isn't a huge portion where you need a nap immediately after. It's filling while still being light enough to continue your day. The bread is soft and buttery. This is a super cute area, and a hidden gem nonetheless. I got a Matcha latte with an Ube milk, it was pleasantly sweet, but not overbearingly sweet. The Matcha flavor was not as prominent as I would like, but it makes sense since I did get an Ube flavoring to it. We also got a regular latte with a maple brown sugar syrup, which was pretty delicious. The seasonal summer sandwich I got was very good and the breakfast burrito was excellent. The staff was extremely friendly and it was a pretty clean coffee shop overall. Based on Yelp, it seems like their sandwiches are pretty popular here but I actually didn't really see many people order sandwiches. It's a bit of a tight seating besides the outdoor bench that was pretty spacious, but the vibes here were pretty nice. I ordered this toffee hazelnut latte and it was pretty decent! Although it was a lot sweeter than I liked it to be, so the overall drink was okay haha.
