January 18, 2025 - I got the baked black pepper chicken on rice with cheese. My girlfriend got the cheesy baked BBQ pork on rice topped with a fried egg. In my opinion, I was not the biggest fan of the rice. It tasted a bit stale to me and the rice was a bit hard. I tried my best to coat it in the sauce to cover the taste. The decor is nice and modern cozy. Someone put since time and effort into creating this space. I really wanted to like this place. The menu seems to combine Cantonese favorites and some HK style western dishes. On the recommendation of the waitress (this should be something they are known for or is very popular... but i don't know of this was the case) I tried the stay beef rice noodle soup. Since it was a set meal it came with a drink which was nice. The flavor was OK... but I can't say it would get me to come back. The portion was OK... but I kinda felt it was recommended because it's the cheapest to make and with the soup will be filling. It was all ok... but if this is "the recommendation" it didn't wow me in any way to make me feel I have to come back and try other things too. I know that can be a tall order without knowing palette preferences but that's what asking questions to me could guide the recommendation. They have a cute menu which I forgot to take a pic of that isn't ripped/dirty as some Chinese restaurants I've been to. They offer a build your own baked dish which is incredible because I love baked with rice dishes. I got the chicken for the first time with added mushroom. Cost is reasonable around $15. My new favourite HK cafe! Better yet, the owners are Macanese -- so their menu also offers authentic dishes from Macao, which is so hard to find here. Clearly beloved already as it was very crowded and our table of 6 had to wait a while for a table. The space is large but fills quickly. You self-check-in at the door, and wait patiently for staff to call your name. It's analog but works! The staff are super friendly here. Our party of 6 enjoyed all the food and drinks! Came here on a weekend right after 12pm. Luckily the weather was terrible so got a table fairly quickly. The restaurant is much smaller than I thought and the tables were awfully close to each other. A guy was wearing his jacket and his jacket literally hit my arm but he didn't apologize - how rude! In terms of food, got two "baked" dishes to try. Both were tasty and it came with a free drink. I've never been too into the thought of baked dishes like so, but a friend pushed me to try the baked BBQ pork on rice, and I was completely sold! The sauce was so rich and flavourful! I added a bit of the Chicken Steak to the rice as well, and that added a nice punch to it all. The gravy for the chicken was insanely good too! I'm so glad I tried this place out, and these dishes are a must get when I go again. It's very popular so it's best to try to book a reservation ahead of time! The acoustics are terrible inside the restaurant. It's so loud. You have to speak very loudly to people you're dining with to be heard. The baked chicken in Portuguese sauce on rice with cheese came out looking good. However, the sauce was too salty and the chicken bland. I suppose they didn't season the chicken. We were a bit shocked with the portion size of the salt and pepper calamari. For $12, I expected more (or maybe I just expected too much?). The coating on the calamari was soft and not crispy and it was so bland. Also, the calamari was on the chewy side. I suspect they get these frozen. I've heard many good things about Woodstone eatery so I just had to see what the hype was for my friends. Its a nice change of pace to see a HK style cafe menu utilize a lot of modern design and very high quality photos, which lead me to choose the bbq pork on rice with cheese ontop. Breakfast: I had a classic HK breakfast of macaroni in soup with ham & and fried egg. The bowl is deeper than it looks by the way. For those of you who haven't had this dish before, let me just say that there is an art to a good macaroni ham soup. The soup can't be too salty, and the macaroni needs to retain its texture (not al dente, but definitely not mushy either) - and this dish hit all the boxes. Lunch: Incredibly filling - I finally got around to trying their famous spicy bbq chicken thigh steak, and it is as delicious as advertised! The chicken was huge and packed with spiced flavour. If you want to soak up the juices and gravy, definitely go for the spaghetti/rice instead of the fried potatoes. The curry beef brisket bread bowl is a new menu item, and it was also much bigger than we anticipated. I love that they included extra curry on the side to soak up all that soft, yet sturdy bread bowl. The curry isn't watered down or too thick, and you get nice sized chunks of tender beef brisket. Barely any veggies in sight for both dishes, which you can decide if that's a pro/con ;) Honestly, the only thing keeping this place from a 5 star review is that it is a little bit pricier (especially with my macaroni soup) than other HK-style cafes, but then again, their menu is more unique! read more

Location: In a plaza in markham. Fun fact there is an internet cafe in the plaza. Parking: There are lots of free parking in this plaza. There's a lot of food places but they have an appropriate amount of parking. I've always found parking. But if you're worried about it get someone else to drive you and have them drop you off at the door. Fake an knee injury if you need to. The inside: I really like the inside. It is both casual and kind of nice at the same time. There's a very interesting decorative wall in the middle. The food: It's very interesting. This is a Hong Kong style eatery. And there is some Hong Kong stuff but when speaking to the owner or manager I find out it's also a Macau based place. I didn't realize that it was a former Portuguese colony and that influence the food. So the food here is unique in that it has Portuguese influence. I think that it's so good. It's one of my favourite restaurants. I have found that over the years it is starting to become more Hong Kong based because I think that's just what's more popular in the area but they still have the Macau style dishes that I like! If you are looking for another place for HK food, you should check out this spot. There is ample room to park (though I recommend making sure your car door is locked given some recent car break-ins). The service was quick and straight forward. We didn't have to wait too long (5-10 mins). Be prepared to be seated closely with others. The portion size was enough for a meal and comes with a tea. Despite a seemingly large parking lot, we struggled to find parking during lunchtime on the Friday before Christmas. Fortunately, there was a table for 6 open when we entered. We decided to go family-style, so we ordered the fried salt and pepper wings, macau style stewed beef brisket udon in soup, hainanese chicken on rice, chicken pad thai, baked fish fillet on spaghetti in tomato sauce w cheese, and classic bbq pork. The wings were nicely fried, but were pretty small in my opinion. The chicken on rice was nicely presented and I was a fan of the chicken pad thai, which was a bit spicy! My personally favorite was the fish with spaghetti and the classic BBQ pork was also very tasty and flavorful! Overall, the menu was very extensive and I would definitely recommend it! I was near Woodstone Eatery and had heard about how great its Hong Kong-style food was. I came here for lunch. The eatery is in the same plaza as Mr Sub, Mi-Ne Sushi, and more. The parking lot was busy, but I found a decent parking spot fairly close by. I backed into the spot and walked in. I waited patiently for someone to come over. It took a while. I eventually got a nice man who got me a menu and had me sit at a booth. I was just in time for happy hour. Yay, deals! I got hot tea immediately. The downside was that no one came to take my order for fifteen minutes. It wasn't all that busy at 3 pm. I eventually waved my hand and arm around to flag one of the servers. It was ridiculous, but the extra arm exercise worked. I got the following: - Hot milk tea - Beef brisket with instant noodles in broth My hot milk tea came out first. I drank it growing up and it brought back good memories. It was good. It wasn't terribly sweet, which I appreciated. The beef brisket with instant noodles were delicious. I loved how tender the beef brisket morsels were. The instant noodles were chewy and perfect. The broth was so good. It was hearty and comforting. I saw many folks come in with takeout orders. I'll need to do that next time. The food is yummy and it's worth exploring the menu more. Maybe service is better when it's not just me dining in. This place isn't completely your average Hong Kong cafe style restaurant. It some what stands out by incorporating a number of dishes from Macau, which gives it a unique menu. The food, however, is a bit of a mixed bag especially the Macanese dishes. Some of the dishes are spot-on and feel very close to authentic, while others are completely off the mark. For example, their curry fish baguette and stir fry minced meat w/ potato is a winner--it's very close to what you'd find in Macau. On the other hand, the sha dan pork chop was fairly off. The flavors and execution just weren't quite there. All in all, it's a decent place to visit. While some dishes are a miss, the ones they get right are a pleasant surprise, making it worth a try if you're looking for something a bit different, or a bit Macanese. read more

The tables are a little cramped so often have to squish in between to pass the aisle but not too bad. They have a pretty extensive menu and it is presented like a magazine booklet style. I ended up getting a baked udon with pork chop in Thai style green curry. It was quite spicy with very subtle green curry flavour. The sauce was a little too lumpy for my liking. The portion size is decent but definitely leaning towards the littler side compared to other hk cafes at around the same price point. The food comes with a set drink and I got an iced lemon tea (upgrade to iced drink is $1.75). At first they gave me an iced milk tea instead but we alerted them it was the wrong drink and they readily remade it. WoodStone Eatery is tucked away in a smaller plaza, but they have many parking spots (which somehow fill up very quickly). Here is a summary of the dishes I've tried: Cheesy BBQ Pork Rice with Egg - This is their most well-known dish. I've tried it twice, and I fail to see the hype. It is good, but I didn't think it was out of this world. It has tomato sauce which helps cut the grease when eating it. The cheese doesn't do much for me here. Honey Garlic Chicken Wings - Love these. Plump pieces, made fresh. Crispy and coated with garlicky and honey goodness; inside, they are moist and tender. You cannot go wrong with these. Thai Lemon Chicken Wings - Also love these. I can't really pick a favorite between the honey garlic and these ones. The flavoring is perfect, with a hint of sourness paired with fragrant Thai herbs and peppers. These are dry wings that are tossed. Hainanese Chicken with Rice - Not a big fan of their rendition of this dish. I would probably not order it again over other dishes. However, it does count as a healthier choice than their saucy meals. Beef Brisket Curry with Rice - It was good; the brisket was tender and somewhat fatty. The sauce was delicious. It came with one random piece of cauliflower and some potatoes. The rice was soft and paired very well with the curry sauce, which I wish was a tiny bit thicker. Order online through their website instead of delivery apps! You can save so much. For example, the Beef Brisket Curry rice was $18.20 on the app, while it is $14.50 online/in person. Overall, there are a lot of delicious choices you can make at this restaurant! The service is friendly too. read more

Wouldn't be against it to come back if someone suggested it, but wouldn't suggest it as a place to come to. Salt and pepper wings - Deep fried wings were seasoned nicely. Came hot and crispy, just how fried wings should be. The mixture of salt, pepper and garlic was really good, also goes well with the rice in the Hainan chicken rice if there is not enough flavour. Cheesy baked BBQ pork on rice topped with a fried egg - This dish sounds amazing, the pictures on the menu for this dish looked amazing. Hence it set the stage for disappointment when the dish did not coe looking like the picture. It was not cheesy enough; BBQ pork was not juicy enough. Would not recommend. Hainanese chicken - An iconic dish with a thumbs up on the menu. The chicken was deboned and was cooked tender, but there was no flavour in the chicken. The sauces, ginger scallion and sweet n spicy sauces saved the chicken somewhat. Rice also needed more seasoning. Also did not come with a traditional chicken soup on the side. Been to wood stone multiple times and I've been satisfied with the quality of the food and the prices. Today I ordered the BBQ pork on rice with a fried sunny side up egg (I believe you can choose how your egg is prepared), and upgraded my complimentary beverage to a cold milk tea. The dish also came with a single broccoli and their signature soy sauce for the BBQ pork. Overall, I enjoyed the dish. The BBQ pork was crispy on the outside and soft on the inside, the perfect bite of BBQ pork. With the meat drenched in the sweet-salty soy sauce, the overall combination is a must try. The white rice and fried egg wasn't anything special, typical jasmine rice you would find at a Chinese restaurant, with a runny fried egg. Their milk tea was also very strong, although not the strongest tasting milk tea I've had in the Markham/Richmond hill area. I came here years ago when it first opened and remembered it being a modern style Hong Kong cafe. The vibe, decor and style is still the same. I love how their menu is so well designed. We tried two of their baked dishes - the baked black pepper chicken with rice with cheese, and their baked bbq pork rice with cheese, topped with a sunny side up egg. The food was good and served hot out of the oven. I really like how the rice base is fried with an egg. The bbq pork was tender and the sauce overall complimented well for both dishes. The service started off pretty good but then it got a bit slow later on. one thing was that we were so disappointed by the cold HK milk tea. We have had bad HK milk tea where the tea is too strong or too much milk, but this was just flavourless. Edit: Both my boyfriend and I got terrible stomach aches the next day. There's ample seating in here and luckily for us they have highchair for the bb. Here was what we ordered: Wings & Fries-$11 - You get 5pcs of wings/drums mix and fries that remind us of school cafeteria fries. Its decent. Hainan Chicken on Rice-$14.50 - One of their signature thumbs up item that has lightly seasoned rice, chicken was quite tender but not the skin part and it comes with sweet chilli sauce and green onion ginger. Honestly, we thought this one was pretty tasty overall. The sweet chilli sauce ain't the same as the usual sauce that should come with it. Cheesy BBQ Pork Rice w/Fried Egg- $15 (Upgrade to cold drink $1.95)- Portion wise was decent and the tomato like sauce covering the rice and meat reminded me of the canned baked beans. The BBQ pork was nice, tender and enjoyable dish. Milk tea was pretty decent as well. Overall, one of the better HK cafe to try for sure. Everything we tried is good and no compliant really. We came during Stage 3 and several precautions are in place such as contact tracing, several plexiglass dividers and social distancing markers on the floor. People generally wear their masks when they are supposed to. The Portuguese chicken has plenty of flavor in the sauce and a good amount of salt. It also comes with a hot drink. The chinese veggies in broth was very clean tasting. The atmosphere is casual, but quite loud with the background music, servers chatting, customers talking loudly, and the sounds of the kitchen (including the blender going!).
