I was putting my house up for sale and I couldn't help but notice my poor, sad dresser looking all in shambles. Kind of a tragedy really, because this is a Drexel Heritage mahogany piece, and it was just stunning back in the day. Unfortunately, the top is scuffed, and the pulls have been falling off and scratching the wood. I'm a bit embarrassed to admit I used a screwdriver to open some of the drawers for the last 7 years!! I've been meaning to get it fixed, but I just never knew how to find someone to help. Thankfully, I got a referral to Wood Wizard. Katie returned my message via text, asking for pictures, and then we talked by phone and scheduled a service date. I was thrilled to learn they could come to my house to do the work, and there wouldn't be any lingering chemical odor. The communication with the company was excellent from beginning to end, which was CRUCIAL, as I moved out and the house is vacant, due to the shelter in place. I was coordinating remotely with several other contractors simultaneously, and on a strict deadline to get my house on the market. Tyler did an excellent job refinishing in one afternoon. He even helped me with some other things that he did not have to do: 1 Noticed water spilled on my hardwood floor and was concerned the floor would get damaged. Rather than make a note of something else he could charge me for later, he mopped it up. 2 Made me aware of oil stains in my driveway. I'd had several contractors park their trucks there, lately, so thanks to the heads up, I was able to schedule a clean up so that my house will look good for professional photos! The final result is amazing, and I'm really happy to see my beautiful dresser restored to its former glory, and updated to look more modern with new pulls. I was reading a post in a hobby related site that I'm a member of this morning. It was regarding worst brain farts(hobby related)that you've had that were pretty costly. It reminded me of the time I accidentally knocked over my very very expensive loudspeaker and an entire corner of the speaker cracked/broke into pieces. It was in black lacquer. A beautiful piano black high gloss shine. I wanted to cry. A place in Canada where the speakers were made, was the only place that said they could probably repair it. A neighbor recommended the Wood Wizard in Martinez. This was several years ago, I can't remember the owners name, but he's nothing short of a miracle worker. You couldn't find a hint of the speaker ever being damaged. I even had an expert in Highend audio look at it and stated my speakers were in excellent condition. Amazing work and artistry, really. Our puppy chewed the bottom step of our wooden staircase and a Restoration Hardware coffee table. Darrel arrived on time, and spent almost 3 hours doing his repairs, working steadily. In the end it did end up costing me $625 for his time, but my wood does not look repaired, it looks like the damage NEVER OCCURRED in the first place! He was so nice and his office manger promptly returned my phone calls and communicated via email to confirm the appointment date and time. My original contact was in November and I had to wait until January 26 for an appointment, but Darrell is well worth the wait. I am just thankful to have found someone with his ability and training. Had a really bad experience with these guys. They came over to fix some scratches that came from the factory on our cabinets. I was working from home, and the wood wizzard went to work on the cabinets. I wish he would have stopped after doing 1 door and asked what I thought about the work, instead he spent a few hours and touched literally everything (all cabinet doors in out kitchen plus the cabinet boxes). Because the finish was so flat on our cabinets and there wasn't any variation in the wood, his "fix" ended up just looking like a bigger, shiney spot than the scratch . They look terrible, and our cabinet supplier ended up having all of our doors replaced by the factory. Stay clear of the wood wizzard of you have a flat sheen and little variation. read more

Darrell, the "Wood Wizard," was a referral of a referral of a referral for a complicated kitchen cabinet repair that was tricky because of the type of stain originally used and its prominent location in our kitchen. Other refinishing contractors were nervous about it, but one "knew a guy" who "knew a guy" and we're so happy we found Darrell. He and his new partner/apprentice Billy did a fantastic job making bringing our kitchen back to normal. While not perfect, the match work they did was really impressive and we're the only ones who would notice that the restained cabinet wasn't original. The other touch-ups they did throughout the kitchen made things look "like new." Their work really is art. And Darrell's a nice, honest guy who takes great pride in his work. They're not cheap and their schedule is lengthy (we had to wait months for our turn in his very busy schedule), but if you have a tough job and need someone who's going to get it right, Wood Wizard is your place. Darrell Stimson and his son Sam just completed refinishing all our kitchen cabinets -- and the tops of our teak dining-room table and two large teak buffets. They were on time, neat and friendly, done in less time than allowed -- and they did a beautiful job. Darrell is an artist in touching up water and heat stains, matching the wood grain until the damage disappears. The Wood Wizard did an amazing job on our water damaged 1920's Mahogany Two Tier Table. The table also has brass trim, handles and accents. This table holds a brass statue on the top tier. The bottom tier had major water damage and the veneer was both darkened and peeling as a result of that damage. The end result was amazing! We have hired the Wood Wizard a couple of times and have been extremely pleased. He was very thorough and precise and produced great results. He and his assistant were easy to work with, friendly and reliable. The results of his work were pretty stunning, especially considering that the job we hired him for was something that no one else was willing to tackle. We have rough-sawn wood walls that had been bleached by the sun, but very unevenly. Where pictures had hung for years, the walls were much darker (having not been bleached by the sun), and we wanted to have the color of the walls evened out and enhanced without losing the natural, rough-sawn look. This is an unusual problem and no one else we asked knew how to approach it. We were very pleased that Darrel took the time to carefully figure out what would work, kept checking in with us about what we wanted, and did a beautiful job making our walls looking a million times better. I think he mostly works on furniture but he really seems to know how to deal with wood in any form. We really loved working with him and especially the results he produced. I am puzzled by all the rave reviews. This man was very bad tempered, argumentative and arrogant. I would never hire him again. I treat anyone who does work for me with the utmost respect. When I graciously asked him to explain his approach to repairing the window frame stain (out of curiosity because I love to know how to do things), he got hostile. Most workers enjoy explaining their process. Then he insisted on blasting right wing radio loudly in my house, which (politics aside) is simply unprofessional. (Most workers use headphones or ask permission to play things or work in silence.) He did an acceptable job in terms of quality, but nothing exceptional. And he was very expensive. He would not give me any suggestions for how to care for the wood into the future (proper cleaners, etc.) which again was bafflingly hostile. read more

The Wood Wizard has worked on my house and furniture several times over the last 10 years. He is pleasant, prompt, neat, provides accurate estimates of work times and cost, and most importantly, is a true wizard. He repaired a crack in the bend of our 1928 mahogany staircase railing that had spread to 1/2 inch wide in places. He filled the crack, made the area more stable, and touched it up so that it is virtually invisible. He also refinished our front door and gave it much more protection from the elements so that it will last another 78 years. He knows how to maintain the integrity of valuable antiques when touching them up. He is expensive, but worth every penny read more

Darrell just left my house after refinishing a small dresser and dining room table. Yes, he is as good as everyone says. I can't even tell that my furniture has been worked on. As a bonus, he came in under the original estimate that he provided. FYI, he has been in this business for a while. He started by restoring antiques while he was still in high school. We unfortunately experienced a few nicks, scratches & minimally gouged dents in the footboard of our sleigh bed due to contractors moving things around the master bedroom. The Wood Wizard was called in to hopefully ameliorate the damage but the finished product more than exceeded our expectations of the outcome. We couldn't see a scintilla of evidence of any remaining damage. The bed looked like it did the day it came out of the furniture store. On a satisfaction scale of one to ten, I'd rate the finished product at least an eleven! read more
