I contacted this company because my fiancé and I want to refinish our hardwood floors but it can be pricy especially for people on a budget like us so we thought we would DIY 1 room ourself to see if we could do it to save some money. I wanted some advice besides YouTube videos I've watched so I called top knot flooring and I believe I spoke to mike the owner and asked if he would give us some advice on how to do our floors. I was surprised with the amount of knowledge he gave us because I was sure he would just want us to hire him instead to make some money but it was the total opposite. He was extremely knowledgeable and walked me step by step on what to do with our floors. Yes we did it and it was manageable but If you have the money and can pay for someone to do it, hire this company! I can tell they do great work and the communication is awesome. Mike and his crew removed carpeting and old hardwood and installed 3/4 x 4 1/4 birch hardwood in living room/family room, closets, dining/kitchen, and hallway/entry, to match previously installed hardwood in bedrooms. Installing natural hardwood is an art form, as each piece must be selected for length and color/grain pattern. Darker pieces must be spaced appropriately with lighter pieces and those with unique grain patterns and/or knots. The finished look, when done by true professionals, is just beautiful; much, much better than laminates. The whole house has a brighter, cleaner look now vs. carpeting and darker 2" hardwood. Worth every penny. They also removed and replaced furniture and installed new baseboard. The work was done on time, at a reasonable price (less than I expected), with a minimum of interference to our daily lives (3 days). read more

I don't like to write negative reviews, but feel I must in this instance. I had originally written a positive review, but after what has happened after the install I can no longer keep that review and must write a new one. My initial communication was positive. I left a VM and received a call back immediately from Mike's wife and she had Mike call and set a consultation. Everything seemed fine from estimate through install. Mike had indicated the price wouldn't go above $9000 and it did go 500 over, but besides that the install was fine. What was really disappointing was how sloppy Mike and his workers are. Mike mixed a leveling compound 2 days in a row on our front porch. Before he did this I let him know that the pavers on the porch and front yard were new, so please be careful. Despite this, he mixed the compound and left numerous large drops on the pavers, which are still there to this day. At the end of the project, there were several other things that he left in a way that was very unprofessional. They took a large chunk of wall out, broke picture frames and left them on the floor, did a really sloppy paint job of baseboards, left cement to dry and damage door frame and porch and walkway, etc etc.. These are labeled finish of job 1-8. When the job was complete they didn't even do a good job cleaning the floor. His guy, Carlos, swept but that's it. When I presented all of these things Mike did come back out, but it was obvious he wasn't happy to come back and didn't apologize. He seems like a guy that does not say sorry. So as time went on (install was 11/16) we noticed lots of other finishing issues....things that should have been done and weren't. They installed flooring in the bathroom but didn't seal around the bathtub. So water just ran down the bathtub and under the floorboards (picture labeled bathroom, no sealer). We also noticed that there were several boards that were coming apart (picture: floor separating). Mike sent his guy and fixed these issues. Again, no apology and I did have to chase him a bit to come back out. Since then, more floor boards split apart and we noticed some other questionable work, especially around the fire place and our back door. His guy, Carlos, shot some caulking into gaps where he should have put transition pieces. (pictures: Bad finish 1-4). Again, Mike sent his guy to fix these, but I had to chase him for more than a month and we was quite unhappy to send someone. Again, no apology or explanation of why these things were happening. Recently one more board split. Mike sent his guy and a text "I can't keep coming to your house for free man". The board that his guy fixed popped back up the next day. Mike now relayed the message that any future work will be at $175/hour. One more big issue...Mike said we didn't need new subfloor....he put some of the leveling compound in between some of the plywood joints. I told him that was OK with me as long as the annoying squeaks would go away. He said, "should be fine". Well a year later the floor squeaks worse then it used to. So, after spending over 11,000 all told for new flooring,-flooring which Mike said would last at least 20 years, we are very frustrated. Had the floor stayed together, like it should have, Mike wouldn't have had to come back even one time. Had he left the job done without damage to my property, he would have never heard from me again unless I needed more work done. To give Mike credit, he did come out and fix things....I did have to chase him to do so. It seemed like finally the floor was going to be fully fixed and I wouldn't have to call him anymore...then this last issue happened and responding with the line "$175 hour to come to your house going forward", really rubbed me the wrong way. So now I have to write a negative review which I hate doing. I'm unsure if there is some sort of manufacturing defect with the floor he sold us, or is it's just bad installation, but either way this was a bummer of an experience. I'd definitely not recommend Top Knot. I'm guessing he might be better with real wood flooring, but with clicking synthetic installation, I'd bet you're going to have similar issues. read more

This review is for flooring we had put in around Nov 2017. Top Knot was recommended to us by our contractor. They installed new hardwood floors for at least 600 sqft and tied into existing hardwood floors that they sanded and stained that covered 900 sqft. We had 2" top nail flooring placed. At first we thought the floors looked nice. They worked with us on the color, and were pretty timely about completing the project. We also had them come back and do the baseboards. However, after they left the painters literally had to go over the whole house again because there were marks all over. The owner, Mike, said this was normal, but we were not about to pay for the repainting, so that was worked out. Fast forward about 8 months. We started seeing holes where the nails were. We called Mike who he came out and gave us some line about the wood putty being water based and that this would happen. He also said it was due to water in the crawl space, which there was not. He said he would send someone over to fix it...he never did. Many emails passed, and he said he would drop off the wood putty on our porch and we could fix it. This also never happened. And now we are noticing many cracks and chips in the flooring, putty is popping out and leaving holes. I went to their office couple times during regular business hours while I was 6 months pregnant and it was always closed. Mike even knew this when he came out to check the floors. We are very disappointed that in only 1 years time these problems have come up. We spent over $12,000 on these new hardwood floors and did not expect this. Our floors that have been in the house for 70+ years don't even have these problems. From the past promises that he made about fixing things, we know this is not going to get fixed. We talked to other flooring contractors about this and everyone said it was sloppy work that could have been avoided. I am beyond upset at this company at the lack of responsiveness, accountability and unapologetic behavior. read more

Mike does not stand behind his work. We had hardwood floors installed (not inexpensive!) 2.5 years ago, and we've developed some issues. I called several times and got no response. The only way I could get him to call back was to ask for an estimate for a new install using his online form. When Mike called me, I let him know that we have some problem areas on our floor, and we set up an appointment for him to come look. Guess what? He pulls a no show! I call back several times, no answer. Look, I'm willing to pay if there's a fix due to wear and tear. I need to address the problem areas, and he should stand behind his work if the installation was bad. I think I'm being fair. read more

Top Knot Flooring was a sub to our contractor so I'm not sure about the cost, and the floors look good. However we had some issues that bothered us. Mike showed up at our house at 6:50am and walked into our house unannounced. My wife was still home getting ready and showering and she was spooked that someone was in the house. Mike left in a hurry and left my side gate wide open so my two dogs decided to take a walk down my neighborhood street while my wife and I were at work. Luckily my neighbors saw my dogs a half hour later down the street and returned them. If either one of my dogs had been hit by a car or picked up by the pound I would be doing much more than writing a poor review. Then Mike had the nerve to make excuses and blame the wind for the gate and basically lied about how early he showed up. Unfortunately for him I have home security cameras that saw everything happen with time stamps. On that same day I discovered while watering my plants I saw he left our contractor's lock box with our key inside unlocked and wide open for anyone to grab my house key IN OUR FRONT YARD. After all of this I forced my contractor to be present at the house while he finished the job the next day because he could no longer be trusted. I have yet to receive any contact for any kind of apology. He gave us a good first impression in his walnut creek store but he repeatedly showed he has no respect for my wife and I or our home through his actions. I simply don't trust him enough to hire him again. read more

We just renewed our house with LVT floor under Mike's leadership. We were nervous before engaged Mike when we read some of the bad reviews about him. However, I learnt that he lost his family member at that time. What we like about him: * Knowledgeable: He takes time to walkthrough various products and options with us. * Customer focus: He didn't give up but continue to follow up with us when we seek for other contractors to compare prices. We eventually come back to him. * Value for money after we compared numbers of quotations, his quotation is the best. * Great quality of workmanship. The result is without squeaky sound. That's very crucial because we had done our floor before with other contractor and the result was with annoying squeaky sound FOREVER. * Efficient timing. I've thought a lot about this review, and I've also considered not writing it at all, because I don't like to write negative reviews. At the time I worked with him, Mike had almost exclusively five-star reviews. As a person, I like Mike. I think he's an honest guy who tries to do his best for people. We are similar in age, and I really respect him for putting together what seems to be a successful business. Unfortunately, I think I caught him at a rough time in both of our lives. I was just moving into a new place, he was experiencing some personal difficulties. Having been in that boat before, I stuck with him through his personal difficulties (didn't look for another contractor), and he came to do the job. The job itself ended up okay, but not great, and there are a lot of little things that I would have liked to have seen fixed (for example, there was an area of a few square feet of floor that did not get a top-coat, and there were some small chunks taken out from moving the appliances back). Normally, I would have asked him to fix the issues, but at the time I discovered them I just wanted to put the whole mess behind me, so I'll do it myself at some point. I also have questions about the durability of the finish itself, and I'm a little bummed that I will probably have to go back in a few years with a "refresher coat" of something a little more durable. If I had known about it, I would have paid a little more for the materials upfront to get a more durable finish. The bigger issue, I think, was that his workers left my appliances out in a surprise rainstorm, uncovered. It would have taken five minutes and a couple bucks in plastic to cover them, but it didn't happen. After it was plugged in, there was enough water sloshing around inside the refrigerator to cause a short circuit until it dried out. Mike was pretty cavalier about that, basically saying "it should be fine." Eventually, it was kind of okay, so all's well that ends well, I guess, but I still feel like he didn't really care about my stuff. I suspect that if he had left his own stuff out in the rain, his wife would have been (rightly) upset about it. For me, that's a sign that, at least at that point in his life, he didn't really care enough to treat my stuff respectfully. And I think there are understandable reasons for that, it's just unfortunate. This was going to be a one-star review, but Mike earned a second star by coming out to work on a Sunday to get the job done in time. The bottom line is, I think he's a good guy, and knows what he's doing, but the devil is in the details. I don't regret working with him, but I do wonder if there are better folks out there. I'm still trying to decide whether to give it another go with Mike in the future and see if things work out better. But maybe there are better choices around? read more

Where to begin.... We hired Mike Pelletier of Top Knot flooring based on the recommendation of a General Contractor who's house we had seen down the street and loved the floors. When we met with him he was very clear with us that he is meticulous, honest worker, and pays close attention to all the detail... He said he was a NO BS guy that he didn't book jobs but rather just give me a deposit and I'll lock in your job which we did that day, fast forward six weeks to the week before the job was to start and Mike was like Oh sorry I got the dates mixed up Im too busy can we push it a week I should have pulled the job there and then!! Back Story: We put the job out to bid and even though their bid was the highest of 3 we went with Mike Pelletier at Top Knot because he talked the talk. He showed up first day and everything seemed good albeit a bit off... We stated again to him that all we wanted was for him to "just exactly match the stain of the hard wood floors house down the street" that same day he laid out stain colors and said this was what they did at the other house pick one. After that That was the end of Mike we never saw him again. His workers were on time, and worked through. They however had zero guidance from Mike or on site supervision and so the job went sideways Unfortunately at that time there was a death in Mikes family so Mike had to go back east. Which was totally understandable. He left on a Thursday, and came back on a Tuesday. Note, he started our Job on the Monday three days before he had to leave but we never saw him on site again until we stopped the job. When my wife did get him on the phone he said " i really don't care about your job right now". Well he should of because his team messed up the entire floor stain and finnish, and they had to be completely redone again. He never replied to any of the three emails I sent him but did reply to one of my wife emails. The job was to have taken ten days but when the job was going on to its 3rd week of not having our house or correct floors He finally decided to come by after we told him we where stopping the job since the floors needed to be completely redone. At the same time we met the owners of the house he did down the street, and they said if they knew we were using him, they would NEVER have recommended him. And we would never either. It was a exhausting experience with Mike and Top Knot .. oh and she said he wrote nothing down, so he didn't even know the color they stained the floors Incidentally he didn't write out job up correctly either even after multiple email exchanges For such a spiritual man Mike is not a nice man, nor does he treat his workers properly which just seem odd... His workers Jaime and Javier worked very hard and completed the install of my luxury vinyl planks and baseboards in 5 business days. I was referred to Mike by the contractor remodeling my bathroom. I was in a hurry to move into my new house, but wanted to get the floors sanded and refinished before we moved in the furniture. Got 2 quotes and mike was the lowest. Told him my schedule to move in and he said it wouldn't be a problem. "IT WAS" didn't show up when he said he would. When his guy did show up he work a few hours then left when I stepped out to run an errand. Didn't finish the work on the scheduled date. He held up my move in date. When I questioned him about not showing up and his guy leaving early all he had was excuses. The work was average at best and took to long. Should have done the work myself and saved myself the head ache and the $$$ read more

Can't say enough good things about Mike and Eileen at Top Knot! My wife and I bought our first home and when I went to pull out the old ratty carpet, I was surprised with 3/4 of house with hardwood floors. Some rooms were in good shape, but a hallway and the large living room had some rough spots. (The living room looked like there may have been a crime scene, haha! ) I knew I didn't have the skill set to handle floors and we are new to the area, so naturally I looked to Yelp. Mike was my first call and he made time to come see the floors that evening. He was super friendly, knew what he was talking about and could work within our tight timeframe. (I needed to be moving furniture in within 10 days) He worked up a few estimates for me based on our "what ifs" and scheduled a time for my wife and I to come by to pick out colors. The showroom visit was great too. We have a 7 month old and trying to concentrate on things like picking flooring colors can be a challenge. Elaine and Mike made us feel at home and even helped us keep the baby occupied so we could make our choices. Fast forward a few days and Mike had us come by the house to see the completely sanded and repaired floors along with the additional room we added. He laid out a several colors that we had chosen and we made our final decision. FLAKEY: Seems like a nice enough guy, he came to our house to give a quote and I accepted the email quote and start date. Then he asked if I could schedule earlier, I said I'd try. Several emails later he gave me a LATER start date (a full week after the original date). Confused, I asked him if we could not go back to the original date I thought we had agreed upon. Believe me I was nice. It was an estimate for a 5 bedroom house refinishing the WHOLE house of wooden floors and I wouldn't want an offended worker messing up my floors. BUT... he never emailed back. I received a bid to do the flooring in my home & it was awkward. I felt, the employee could have done a better job measuring the rooms. The final estimate was not what I asked for, nor did it provide the appropriate quanity of what I need because the measurments are off. Which caused the price to be thrown off. In addition, it appears the company will pass along an extra fee for using a credit card, which is tacky to me. I'm sorry, but I don't have $10,000 in cash sitting in my account & would have to use a credit card. I'm sure they do a fine job, but it starts with the estimate. read more

We needed new hardwood for half the house and got a quote the next day. The living room/ dining room needed refinishing and the plan was to match it. When work started it turned out the old hardwood was too thin to refinish but they gave us a fair quote for the replacement and did the work in less than a week. I had topknot refinish my floors. While the original experience was great I have found the prolonged experience not so great. With the slickness on my hardwood floors I experienced a fall that shattered my knee causing 2 surgeries due to the slickness of the floor. I still cannot walk. My dogs cannot get up when on the hardwood floors because it's to slippery. I have not contacted the company to grieve my differences because I figured it was my fault. read more
