Our two new gates, gorgeous and substantial, are a pleasure to see and open. We've had them for a few weeks now and still every time I pass through them, I applaud myself for having found FCR Fence & Deck and having had the wisdom to move forward with their company. From beginning to end the experience was great. I'd reached out to multiple companies, planning to take numerous bids, but amazingly found that few were unresponsive. FCR on the other hand was quick to respond to my inquiry on their website Contact page and were quick to set up the estimate appointment. The downside was I needed to wait two weeks. In the meantime I met the Project Manager from another company and was pleased with the experience, except that I never received a bid even though we texted several times. Rob Quinlan from FCR was similarly on time, but his amiability, professionalism, and communication, both in person and in subsequent texts, set him apart. He has excellent follow through, too, as our gates attest! He also really knows the ins and out of gates. When I said I wanted ours to be pushed open from the street side, Rob asked if we had a pool. It turns out that if one has a swimming pool, the gate legally has to swing out to the street. Rob explained that pulling a heavy gate is harder for little kids than pushing it, making it less likely they can access a backyard and drown! I was so impressed with Rob that I told him then and there that I wanted to move ahead with FCR. I received the quote and a contract later that day. It showed the options for the two different types of Redwood. Rob had explained that the photos one sees of beautiful fences are always made of the more expensive wood, from the heart of the tree. I had said that was the one I wanted, but it was still great to see options and prices laid out. I was able to sign the contract electronically. It was another two weeks before the actual installation, but the day of the work was fast and smooth. The crew and Rob arrived separately and on time. We all discussed every detail afresh, this time with Hector and Paco weighing in with their own expertise. There was some discussion among the men as to how and where to install the posts for the new double gate so that it would stay strong for the long term. I was consulted as well and made it clear that longevity and easy operation were paramount to me. I also mentioned that I was nervous about the possibility of there being a pipe to the house in that area, one that was private and therefore not marked by the utility companies. (Rob had done his company's legal duty of arranging the 8-1-1 Dig Ticket ahead of the work day). Rob took me seriously and walked out to the sidewalk, saw that there was indeed a drainage outlet there and told Hector to dig slowly and attentively. Rob left for the day and Hector and Paco got to work. Hector did find the water pipe about 12" down, right where the post was supposed to go. He had me come out and see the situation. He gave me two options: place the post over the pipe, in which case it would lack endurance for the long term, or go two feet down in the hole he had already dug closer to the house. I opted for the deep hole and the reliable fence. I was glad to have been consulted. I was grateful for Hector's having found the pipe without damaging it. Both gates and the small fence surrounding them were completed between 8am and 3pm. The areas were all cleaned up. Hector had me come out and assess the work. The gates have easy and sturdy hardware on them. They open and close with ease, swinging into the backyard as specified. They're attractive, substantial, and show every sign of enduring. I knew from the good communication that I could simply hand the check to Hector. Rob was going to come by to make sure I was happy but I said I was exceedingly pleased and insisted he didn't need to. He followed up with a text nevertheless to double check and I gave him a glowing, detailed review. Later that day I received an invoice showing I had paid. FCR refinished four redwood decks that probably hadn't been taken care of in well over a decade (before we moved here). They look stunning now. While they were drying I'd just stand at the door staring at them. Every time I walk by, I look out and smile. The decks feel luxurious now, so clean, smooth with no splinters; and water beads right off it. We had Rob out for a quote and he was just as nice as he was earlier in the year when we were looking at support reinforcements, which we postponed because refinishing was going to bring much more aesthetic appeal and enjoyment. The quote was very reasonable. Rob explained how the process worked and what we'd need. We're two neighbors in upstairs condos with two decks each. I was super concerned about major disruption because I'm in very poor health and unable to leave home for long, needing to stay and sleep while work is going on. Neighbor and I also have pets who need to be contained while the workers access our front decks, which are only accessible through our very small condos. The guys were very late the first day, my only complaint, and mainly an issue because I'd timed my meds for their arrival. I was in bad shape, spacey and very cranky, but perhaps they've dealt with worse. :) William and Beto were wonderful. They spent four days powerwashing, sanding, and staining. We asked them to scrape further between the boards to get out stuck gunk--leaves, dirt, some old roofing nails and pebbles. One deck has a lattice all around which involved them spraying rather than brushing, so they needed to tape around the lattices. They suggested doing that deck all in one day, which made our lives easier as I could release the beasts indoors the last two days, expecting no interruptions inside. They were very respectful of property. We have downstairs neighbors on both sides who were going to be inconvenienced. William and Beto did their best to wash off residue from powerwashing above, that might have ended up on landscape and windows below; and they moved some potted plants. They cleaned the windows next to the decks as well. They were very resourceful finding outlets, using ladders and extension cords to access the decks without stairs, and dealing with parking in our full lot. William brought a stain color card and I circled the two my neighbor and I thought would look good. At the last minute I looked up another online and was able to send the three solid stain names to Megan at the office, who was always a pleasure to work with on the phone. Turns out the last-minute color was the best. William and Beto put down samples and it was an easy choice. We're very happy with the color. They worked quickly and brought in a third worker to get four decks done in four days. I would definitely work with FCR again. read more

Mixed experience with FCR when I had a shared property fence (~120 feet) rebuilt. For future customers, I would be mindful of confirming scheduling, and making sure the finish quality quoted matches your expectations. Pros: - Fast quote, flexible scheduling. - Fence built quickly (~2 days for previous fence removal + construction) - Cost was competitive, with split billing for neighbors. Cons: - Date mixup. The fence builders came a week earlier than scheduled, right when I happened to be out of town, but interestingly also came on a Tuesday instead of the Monday communicated over texts and emails. Not sure what happened here. I wasn't able to get a response by FCR over email or phone before or during construction, and was called back only after the fence was already built, which was quite stressful. - When I got back into town to inspect the fence, the quality was a bit shabbier than I expected. Looks fine from a distance, though up close the surface finish was rough, with some trim splintering already. Prior to construction, I was sent a picture of a recently built fence that I thought would be representative of the finish and construction quality, but the finished fence didn't really match. read more

I called the company to see if they are able to replace the slats in my cyclone fence. The person answering the phone said that she would check with her supervisor, and call me back. After a week with no response, I called the company back. I was told once again that she would check with the supervisor, and get back to me within 30 minutes. I waited and waited, and did not get a response. I don't expect the company to be able to replace the slats, but I did expect the company to call me back one way or the other without leaving me hanging. I also have a wooden fence that will need replacing, but I won't be calling this company. read more

This was to replace 142 feet of fence on a corner lot in a high wind area of El Sobrante. Dylan and Megan were awesome to work with and the construction crew were incredible.
