This is my second visit to Wolfe's diner. They're 100 miles from where I live so travelling I know it's time for a break or I'm 100 miles from home. I was there last Saturday afternoon after the lunch crowd was gone heading back from Rochester. I topped off the gas tank and was hungry. So I park and head inside. It's not a big place. Several tables on one side and the bar on the other. I grab a seat on the end at the bar. The waitress comes over and I order a cup of coffee and look at the menu she provided. I'm pretty hungry not eating anything that day so far. I decide on the breakfast special ( 2 eggs any style and home fries). I add toast and bacon. Eggs over medium. The coffee is pretty good. I'm looking at traffic patterns in my phone, checking out the weather. Food arrives pretty quick and the plate is covered. Toast is fresh, home fries and good, bacon crispy and eggs cooked to order. The coffee gets refilled and I'm enjoying every bite. I like the old school diner vibe with the fresh coffee and diner style foods. I am finished and quite full with an excellent meal. I get the check and it's pretty cheap. She gets a good tip, I'm done with the coffee and out the door. I have been going past for maybe 20 years and stopped now twice. I think it will be a regular stop on my way to Rochester back and forth granted they're open. I think they're closing for a few weeks in August, just be aware. Been driving by Wolfe's for about 14 years. The lot is always full and I've heard good things. Finally had an opportunity to stop and have a meal since I was in the area on business. My coworker and I left feeling, meh. Plenty of food it just wasn't all that great. He had a country fried steak, mashed, and carrots and his bills was about $10. He took food with him and reported it was "ok." I had a western omelette, dark dry rye bread, an order of home fries, and an order of French ghosts. The toast had butter on it. The home fries were mushy and flavorless. The omelette looked great but had no flavor. And the French ghost was bread soaked in pancake batter. This was confirmed by our extremely friendly and attentive server who even stated, voluntarily, that French toast is supposed to be bread with eggs, milk, vanilla, possibly cinnamon and then topped with powdered sugar. My entire meal tasted "tan" -- flavorless, mushy, meh. My food came out to $16.50 with the coffee. Perhaps the burgers would have been a better choice but omelettes are usually a safe and tasty option. Our server was a gem and we liked the inside of the diner -- which was clean, comfortable, and "cozy" -- but without good food and good coffee, well, I won't go back. read more

My partner and I happened to pass by this place on our way to a wedding and I pulled a U turn at the next light to go here. We love old fashioned stainless steel diners. This particular diner is beautifully maintained. There's even old table jukeboxes at each table that still work! I ordered sausage gravy and biscuits and an order of scrapple, which I've never had before. The food was good, and while scrapple isn't quite my thing, it was an interesting meat pancake to try out. Ask what's home made (most of it) and what they recommend. The prices for all of the lunch specials just can't be beat. I got a staple menu item which was the Wolf Burger....1/4 lb. cheese burger with onion rings for $3.50. That's a good deal. Next time I'll add bacon to it, though. Also had some of their home made soup (chicken and rice) which was very good. Can't beat a bowl of home made soup from a diner and as I already said, the service was extremely fast. Keep patronizing these places or we'll continue to get overrun by fast food chains. Wolfes Diner is a classic! Let's set the stage--it's an honest-to-goodness real stainless steel diner built by O'Mahoney in 1955. It's pretty much original and unmolested since the day it was built. The wear marks on the counter Formica are a testament to this establishments longevity I always get breakfast and it's always great. The price is embarrassingly low so I usually leave a tip equal to the price of the food--you should too. The staff is THE MOST FRIENDLY and accommodating I've ever experienced. Really wanted to give this place a chance, considering it's an authentic highway diner from another era. Unfortunately it's a top contender for "kitchen nightmares". I've had my share of crap food while traveling but this is amonng the absolute worst. Ordered a Greek salad and onion rings. Entire salad was filled with slimy transparent rotten lettuce. "Oil and vinegar" dressing was two bottles-- one cheap vegetable oil, one white vinegar with dust on the outside and the "mother" floating in the bottom of the bottle. What can I say, I'm a sucker for the traditional stainless steel clad diner. After a business meeting in Harridburg, driving back to DC on Route 15. Shiny, diner...gotta stop. Had a hot chicken sandwick with mash under a proportionate server of vibrant yellow gravey and pickled beets on the side. All I can say is yum. Not overly complicated, but everything as it should be, chicken from one cooked right there, not out of a box. And my gosh the coffee, I forgot how much I love the diner coffee. Tyr it here and you will understand why firefighters and cops can drink 6 cups a day. SMOOTH and just the right amount of bite. I darnk three cups with lunch, free refills arriving without asking. The waitress was prompt and attentive, pointed out that the waffles for chicken and waffels weren't homemade, ditto the pies and kept us on the right track. You'll try it for the nostalgia, you'll come back for the decent basic food and the more than decent prices. My test of a good old fashioned diner is a cheeseburger, fries, and chocolate milkshake. I was not disappointed. Although not the gourmet burger you might find at that place up the road, it reminded me of the burgers my mother used to fix, complete with lettuce and tomato. The fries were hot and the milkshake just right. The waitresses are very friendly and attentive and remember the regular's orders when they walk in the door. I might consider becoming a breakfast regular or a pie and coffee regular if it were on my daily route. I will come again on a different day at a different time to try something else from the menu. Decided to give this diner a try after passing it all the time on 15. 5/5 for ambiance, (granted I'm rating this on a diner scale...) they have the stereotypical jukeboxes at the tables, kitschy signs that have sassy phrases on them. The table and booths were clean, and the waitress friendly. It seemed like she knew everyone there. 4/5 for Food. I had the turkey club w/ bacon, and it didn't disappoint. The turkey was hand carved, flavorful, and not the least bit dry. I would go back for this sandwich. I also ordered a chocolate milkshake, which didn't disappoint. My mom had one of the specials, chicken corn soup and a bbq beef sandwich. The soup was good, but the sandwich ended up looking more like a sloppy joe than bbq beef... My dad had "The Big Mess", which looked to be a scramble of potatoes, ham, and eggs. It was a full plate, and he finished all of it, which I would take as him enjoying it! Where. To. Begin. Call me a jerk, but I don't get the hype. On very few occasions have I been led astray by Yelpers, but this was one of them. This was the kind of place that looked clean, but felt dirty. We landed here after being at Ashcombe's and well there are very limited options for dining in the area and we were starving. After reading all the positive Yelp reviews we actually left the bar area at TJ Rockwells to come here. Big mistake. I guess I was expecting was "Diners, Drive-Ins, and Dives." You know...awesome food even if it isn't prettiest place. What I got was 80s TV dinner. After stewing over the menu of comfort food dinners, we both opted for the turkey dinner with "homemade" mashed potatoes, filling/stuffing and a veggie. This is not something I would eat on any other day of the year than Thanksgiving, but it felt right given the setting and choices. The meal came out. I tried to remain positive despite becomingly increasingly unsettled by my choice of place and meal. The gravy was practically fluorescent yellow and there was a pool of it on top of the relatively dry turkey. The popular "homemade" mashed potatoes tasted like they were "homemade" from a box. And the stuffing!! It was literally torn up pieces of white bread (that I'm certain were never baked) with a few shakes a dried parsley doused with the glowing gravy. Green beans...they were from a can. As we choked down our food we saw another couple come in and look around warily before they scurried out the door. Sure the service was fast. The waitress was nice-ish. That's about all I can say. I'm really perplexed by all the positive reviews. I would not go back. read more

This is a truly authentic diner. It is owned by a wonderful Greek family who will treat you as one of their own if you are kind, but if you are rude, will not take your guff, nor should they! We had high hopes for this classic diner. There aren't many of these beauties left and it's always exciting to find one on our travels. We don't expect fine dining, but are always looking for solid diner food- open-faced hot sandwiches, Salisbury steak and gravy, turkey and dressing. Food that, at the end of the meal, satisfies belly and soul. And coffee. We like a hot cup of strong coffee. This is what we hoped of Wolfe's, but sadly, this is not what we found. The space is small and a cheery waitress whose voice and happy spirit filled the space directed us to seat ourselves. The lone empty booth was a crumb-filled mess which we promptly brushed aside and our joyful friend quickly brought us menus and place settings. If it wasn't for her super service, this would be a one-star review. But she is the star of this place, treating customers like old friends who she is just thrilled to see again. She brought my husband a cup of their "Maxwell House" coffee, named on the menu as maybe a vestige of times gone by when that brand signaled quality. The watered down brew was piping hot, but had no body, even for such a supposedly deeply roasted bean. I ordered the Salisbury steak with mashed potatoes (homemade, the menu exclaims), lettuce with bacon dressing and my all-time favorite: coleslaw. My husband, after much deliberation with their extensive menu, chose the chicken and waffles. Our coleslaw came out first and was followed by my lettuce with dressing. I'm not from this part of the country, but my husband is and I made him taste the salad. The dressing was like a cornstarch slurry made with sugar water with bits of bacon it. I wondered if this was just what bacon dressing is like here. He confirmed that, in fact, it was not. That coleslaw though! O! That coleslaw was wonderful. Finely grated cabbage and carrots in a perfectly balanced creamy sauce. I should have just ordered the coleslaw. Just the coleslaw. My Salisbury steak arrived with a prepackaged-just-add-water brown gravy covering a tough hamburger steak and canned mushrooms. The mashed potatoes did indeed seem homemade. It wasn't terrible. I'm not saying it was amazing or maybe even good, but it was palatable enough to make a quick meal of at only $6.75. My husband's chicken and waffles though? That was a mess of an entirely different proportion. Imagine two thin Eggo waffles covered with sliced, roasted chicken and the oddest yellow-colored goop that you've ever seen trying to masquerade as gravy. The waffles were soggy and the meal felt more like salty baby food than a dinner entree. He sent it back and asked instead for a bowl of ham and bean soup. The soup was okay. It was watery and really had none of the delicious beany flavor for which Central PA's ham and bean soup is known. Perhaps we should have stuck with breakfast, but we truly love diner classics and we're just looking for a diner experience that was not merely a sad replica of a menu from a time before interstates when diners like Wolfe's lined our country's highways, drawing in locals and travelers alike who were seeking great meals, hot cups of coffee and good conversation. We might stop back in for some of their coleslaw and perhaps to give breakfast a chance. But we won't be ordering dinner here again. We'll have to look for our diner fix elsewhere. And that's a bummer because places like Wolfe's are rare and we want them to succeed. read more
