We were met with a pleasant greeting to which we requested a booth by a window... Apparently I wasn't real clear because he brought us to a booth where I would be sitting next to a wall... Me moved one booth to fulfill our request: "by a window"... Things improved greatly from there... Our server was there taking our drink order before we even sat down... Very impressive... Drinks came within 30 seconds; then she took our order... I ordered 3 eggs scrambled soft, wheat toast dry, and the home fries that come with it... Wife ordered French Toast with powdered sugar... Food wasn't memorable, but I'm alright with that, We had my two grandsons with us, and I didn't get to eat a bite. My problem is that when I arrived home, and unpacked my boxes, I realized that a part of my order was never brought to the table. My order offered choice of soup or salad, and I had chosen a chowder that was a soup f the day. Never arrived, was not boxed up, AND, I gave the server a 20% tip, in cash. Two friends and I stopped in for lunch on a Friday. It looked good from the outside and we decided, "why not give it a try". We were very pleased with the service, cleanliness, and food. We stopped in on a Sunday morning at about 11 AM. As we walked in, we were greeted by a friendly employee. We were seated almost immediately, and our drink order was taken quickly. My husband ordered eggs, sausage, hashbrowns, and rye toast. I ordered the chef salad. Both meals were served to us in a timely manner. The eggs and sausage and hashbrowns were hot. My salad was fresh. The dining room was very clean and we enjoyed the music playing in the background. The restrooms were clean. My Dad & I have visited 3 times in the last couple weeks as my Mom has been recovering a nearby, acute care rehab hospital, and Sunlight Diner has proved to be a wonderful "home base" in Mechanicsburg. The 1950s-era theme and oldies music playing give the place some personality. The team at Sunlight Diner is consistently friendly and they deliver great service, and the food, from eggs to meatloaf to tuna salad sandwiches - are consistently delicious, delivered quickly, and reasonably priced. We have visited Sunlight Diner two times recently, once on a Thursday morning and once on a Sunday morning. On our most recent visit, on a Sunday morning at 11AM, our party of three waited about 10-12 minutes for a table. We ordered 2 coffees and 1 juice, and each ordered an omelette. My Florentine omelette was good and so were the home fries. My husband had the cheesesteak omelette and my dad had the mushroom Swiss omelette. Service was good and food came out quickly despite the restaurant's tables being fully occupied. The portions were ample, not huge. And the prices were reasonable. A note that they put the total amount of the bill on the back of the check so you need to turn it over. The front of the check did not have the correct number and it was lower so we didn't know. We have found our new "go-to" place for breakfast. Yes, the staff are great, the owner/manager warm and friendly, and our food was well prepared. But there is one thing Sunlight Excels at for our area: Grits. We often order grits rather than potatoes when we go out. And every where else is a crap shoot. Will I need a fork to eat them so the the water can drain off? I've actually exchanged grits for home fries because what came to the table shouldn't have been allowed out of the kitchen. A solid choice for breakfast, this classic diner has the usual goodies and I stuck with exactly that, an omelette that was nicely loaded with ham and bacon and sausage. No veggies here, other than the sliced tomato I chose instead of home fries. I'm doing a keto diet and this is perfect. (The toast went on to my dining companion's plate.) But my wife is pregnant. My daughter is 3. And my son is 8 with asthma. And as we sat and ate breakfast on their outdoor deck, one after another, tables lit up their cigarettes. Then they continued, cigarette after cigarette. Filling the small space with billows of smoke. Yes, it was outside. But it was horrible. And the 2nd hand smoke is unsafe for pregnancies and any lungs. The bathroom was a little dirty but not bad. The main hub of the restaurant was cute but a lot of ceiling tiles and moldings were broken. With tlc and taking care of the health and safety of their customers, things could change. I had fish and chips that were 3 small portions of what appeared to be frozen fish filets and breading. Fries were frozen and fried as well. We arrived Saturday morning about 830 or so and even though the parking lot looked full we were seated right away. Our waitress, Holly, greeted us with smiles and took out drink order. Great menu with options but not overwhelming choices. Holly took our order and came back with coffee refills and just a few minutes later our breakfast arrived! Unfortunately I can only give this a 1 bc they allow smoking in their outdoor seating, which is absolutely atrocious that this is still legal in 2021. It's unfortunate bc the staff was very nice and the food was good. We don't feel safe taking our children into inside eating establishments but subjecting our children to smoke is horrible. I admit it. I'm bougie and particularly when it comes to food. However, I like to think that I'm objective in my restaurant evaluations and one of the matrix I often refer to is "appropriately priced." Additionally, let me state that I have worked in more restaurants than I care to count and started in hospitality at 17, from diners to fine dining. The hashbrown was under cooked, almost raw, there was cheese on the omelette when that wasn't mentioned in the description on the menu, the mushrooms were from a can, there should've been sausage on the omelette and wasn't. Oh, I also ordered a side of corned beef hash that was 1000% from a can. Bro, listen, even if I wasn't a good cook, I'm sure I would be capable of making my own corned beef hash out of a can. I had high hopes for the Mechanicsburg Diner. It's close to my job. Wasn't too expensive. As soon as I got out of my car and walked to the door, I wanted to turn around and go back. Can we say "dirty"? Incredibly run down and dirty. I was there for lunch and there were maybe two other people there. The layout is weird. The furniture was cool but the vinyl chairs and formica tabletops looked like they hadn't really been wiped down well in ten years. The decorations on the wall were faded. Papers and flyers were taped up next to the cash registers. The dropped ceiling was ancient, mirrored tiles with all sorts of discoloration and spotting and the tracks were RUSTED. Attached to the hanging pendant lamps were remnants of tinsel from 1965. Euh. We sat in the back near the restrooms and had a lovely view of the hallway they were using as storage for random crap and the air conditioning unit with 50 years of dust accumulated on it. Then there's the food. The menu was pretty standard. Difficult to read and organized poorly. We ended up ordering specials. The waitress brought my boyfriend the wrong soup. I had an open turkey sandwich and the gravy on top was so thick, unctuous and gloppy, it looked more like vanilla pudding. It was obviously made from a mix and bland. There wasn't really enough of it either. The turkey was good. The portions were small. The french fries were the frozen coated kind and they were a little underdone. BF had a patty melt. The patty was so small, it didn't cover half the bread. Our waitress went between hovering every single second and then ignoring us at the end of the meal when we were looking for the check to get the hell out of dodge. She say down at the table behind us and proceeded to have a conversation with the diners (friends of hers?) about a repulsive medical issue. It did give me a chance to visit the bathroom. Oh, the ladies room. What's the first thing you do when you open a door to a dark room? Feel around for the light switch, right? Well, it was right there next to the door but is the kind with outlets on it. I could easily have shocked myself but I was saved by the heavy duty, thick, orange extension cord plugged in there that snaked up the wall and into the ceiling. I'm pretty sure that's a fire code violation, by the way. Once the light was on I could see the decades' worth of dust all along the walls toward the ceiling, the mirror that was only wiped as high as a short cleaning person's hands could reach (about halfway) and a hand dryer that looked like a survivor from WWII. Absolutely DISGUSTING. The toilet, while old, was clean. I will never, ever go back there, not even on a dare. read more
