9/9/26: Carlisle Diner is just down the road from Dickinson College, so we chose it to take our daughter for dinner and we're glad we did! We didn't realize they are under new ownership since our last visit & it's all new decor inside and a new menu. We ordered their grilled cheese sandwich with a side of applesauce; lemon pepper broiled salmon with broccoli, sweet potato fries, and a salad; prime rib with salad and broccoli; and a cup of chili. Plus a pumpkin roll and a scoop of vanilla ice cream for dessert. Everything was delicious!! "Typical" diner menu but the food we ate was Restaurant quality. First impression when I walked in was not really good. The set down counter was cluttered and was being used for staff stuff. The area I could set at was visibly dirty and needed wipe down. The next thing was my sever. Her personality was very dry . Now listening to the rest of the staff. That is not the norm. Today I ordered the senior Haddock. That came with a drink and dessert. The fish was cooked to perfection. And the tapioca was freshly made. If I had to make any comment on the food it would be my soup was overcooked. Now setting at the counter I saw a lot of different dishes coming out of the kitchen. There was not too much that i saw I would turn my nose up at. This place was swamp. So I probably saw it all. So I'm sure with their menu they will have something for you. Do I recommend this place..,, Yes it's diner food. My meal was above average. I liked the overall value. Our waitress seemed like she did not want to be there, and she forgot several things (my chips, my friend's side of Mayo and my other friends drink). My third friend asked to be sure the shepherds pie did not contain onions, as she is unable to eat them. She was assured that it does not contain onions, but it did. Today wasn't a good day. The breakfast was great except for two things. Got my toast and there was a tiny spot of butter on some of the toast and none on the others. Secondly, the new manager came in wearing heavy cologne, or body wash, that fumigated the front of the restaurant. He stood at the register the entire time we were eating, and the smell was enough to gag a maggot. It ruined the taste of our breakfast and the enjoyment of the moment for us. In general, we love coming here. Good service, good food and good price! Frequented this diner many times over the years in it's various incarnations - hadn't been by for a number of years, but found myself in town while waiting for an EARLY appointment - remembered the diner. Was seated quickly - typical no-nonsense 'let's get down to business' service. Food came quickly...ordered breakfast (ham & eggs). Food was decent as was the portion size. Ambience was '20th Century Diner' - which is fine for me. If you want food and no frills, this is your place....if you want an exquisite culinary experience...it isn't. If you're looking for some good old fashioned diner food, then the Carlisle Diner is a great local dive to check out. They have a full menu of breakfast, lunch, and dinner options for you, and it's the standard affair you'd find most places like this. It's pretty cozy, but we didn't feel packed in at all. There are options to sit at a long counter or at a booth/table if that's more your style. My wife and kids enjoyed breakfast - the pancakes are huge! I ordered a monte cristo (my go to diner food), and it was alright (not the best, not the worst). I wouldn't recommend ordering a side of bacon - you don't get much at all for the price. The service is the reason holding it back from a full five stars. It wasn't overly busy at all when we were here, but we didn't see our waitress except to order and to pay the check (which we were ready to do, but had to wait around for almost 10 minutes for her to finally make her way back over to us). Like I said, it wasn't super busy, and I'm generally pretty gracious with service workers, but it was awkward, and that's why I mention it here. One of the few diners in the area that has online ordering. It was very easy to use and the pick up process was seamless. The food was everything you can ask for from a diner. This is a typical diner with a large menu covering everything from breakfast to dinner and in between. They have a parking lot but it's an easy walk from Dickinson College. They have Pepsi products. The waitress was normal without much of a personality unless your a regular (aka they don't like new people unless possible student) nothing with telling soups or specials which I know there one the board. We had mott's sticks as an appetizer the lobster bisque was bland and fake crab. Shrimp basket fresh out of the frier and the fries yummy. Quick service for sure. The chipped beef was thick and had a fair amount of dried beef, not overly salty. The potatoes are well cooked but lacking any seasoning. One dish requested cheese n onion with potatoes so it was graced with some American on top. Sadly they don't make their own corned beef hash. read more

Apparently there are 3 or 4 diners owned and operated by the same people, this being one of them. According to my friend who is local, I've now tried them all. I believe there's Walnut Bottom, Fairgrounds, and this one with possible one more. All in all a diner is a diner. I usually frequent them more so for breakfast, but occasionally I'll dine in. On this particular visit to a diner, I had a hot open-faced sandwich; prime rib to be more specific. It was served with mashed potatoes and another side, I opted for beets which were somewhat unsatisfactory, but overall it was a good meal. The price was right as was the portion. The only shortcoming I can really point out is the service seemed rather slow. Almost inattentive. Granted, there was a large party sitting behind us, but I only ever saw one server working with them and it wasn't ours. We hardly saw ours at all. My fiance and I had stopped here while out running errands... The young man who seated us and got our drinks was very pleasant however our waitress never offered a breakfast menu when it was 10am, she was rude while taking our order, and it was very unprofessional that she only visited our table 2x throughout our visit. The food was undercooked and poorly presented. My fiance ordered a burger with chips, never got the chips. We were there there over an hour and a half, with only 2 other full tables in the diner. One star for the extremely nice waitress and another star for the super short wait time for food. Sadly the speed that the food came out said volumes to the quality of the meal. The food was nothing special - sometimes a bit too salty, atmosphere was meh, and management was rude. I had a minor issue/question about my dish that the manager came over to answer. She was a petite, blonde lady with the customer service ability of a twelve year old. She plastered on a very condescending voice when she offered to bring me something else if I wasn't satisfied with my meal. I politely declined and thought that was the end of it. HOWEVER, when you have a wall made of MIRRORS, you should remember not to pull a face after turning away from your customers. Ya'know, with the reflection and all. She was so incredibly rude and had the poor waitress scrambling and apologizing to me. The wait staff is good, the food is diner food. Exceptionally fast kitchen. Atmosphere is a diner. You get a diverse group of people depending on the time you go. Unfortunately I am not allowed to go there due to the owners discriminatory practices and her judgmental attitude. I do not wear shoes for medical reasons. The only thing that has cured a nagging back problem has been to toss my shoes out the window. I tried to reason with her to allow my shoeless presence (there aren't any other diners that care that I've come across) but she wouldn't have it. Didn't even care that it was for medical reasons. It is not against any health code or law. It is no more or less unsanitary than one walking in off the streets wearing shoes. You see the same amount of foot as one wearing flip flops. Yet she still denies me entrance. I would say to go here anyway, but its very hard to support an owner with this attitude. read more
