Sometimes the best dessert adventures begin with a memory. I hadn't been inside this building since high school, back when it was something entirely different. More than twenty years later, I found myself back in Enola on a Friday night with one mission: find dessert. Specifically, I was hunting for peanut butter pie for myself and cheesecake for my Adventure Buddy. As I was trying to think of somewhere that might have both, the Squeaky Rail Diner popped into my head. I wondered if they still had the legendary dessert case I remembered all those years ago. Spoiler alert...they do! The moment I walked through the door, several staff members greeted me and offered to help. The dessert case was absolutely loaded with pies, cakes, cheesecakes, cannolis and just about every other sweet treat you could imagine. For this visit, I was only stopping in for takeout dessert, so this review is based solely on that experience rather than the diner's full menu. After a few minutes of what can only be described as an internal dessert debate, I settled on three slices to take home: peanut butter cream pie, classic cheesecake and Cinnabon cheesecake. The Cinnabon cheesecake practically jumped into the box on its own! The desserts were packaged quickly, checkout was easy and about $22 later, I was headed out the door with Friday night dessert secured. Later that evening, the official taste testing began. The peanut butter cream pie was good. Not life-changing. Not disappointing. Just a solid, acceptable slice of peanut butter pie. The classic cheesecake, unfortunately, was my least favorite of the three. It was noticeably dry, almost as if it had been sitting in the case a little longer than ideal. It certainly wasn't terrible, but it also wasn't one I'd order again. Then...we opened the Cinnabon cheesecake. Game over! Cinnamon roll on the bottom. Cheesecake in the middle. Another cinnamon roll on top. Whoever came up with that idea deserves a raise! It was rich, creamy, perfectly balanced and easily the standout dessert of the night. If someone told me they were making a special trip to Squeaky Rail Diner just for that cheesecake, I wouldn't question it for a second! Would I make another special trip for the entire dessert case? Probably not. Would I happily make another trip for that Cinnabon cheesecake? Absolutely! Sometimes all it takes is one exceptional dessert to earn a return visit. read more

We stopped in when we were in the area and it was a pleasant experience. The hostess and our waitress were both amazing. My wife got the turkey and stuffing/filling. The portion was huge. She chose a side salad and pickled beets and fries with beef gravy for her sides. They were all very good. I just had a bowl of chili. It had a good flavor, but I didn't care much for the large kidney beans. That's just a personal preference and nothing I would fault them for. This one is definitely worth a stop. read more

Second time visit to the Squeaky Rail Diner. Although there was no "greet"... we did get seated within seconds of arrival... Our server arrived to get our drink order before we even had a chance to sit down... Very impressive... When she returned, she took our order... Even though the diner was very busy for a Sunday morning, our breakfast came in a timely manner. I had three eggs (scrambled soft), wheat toast dry, and the home fries... Wife had French Toast and crispy bacon... Everything came still hot; and it tasted very good. Again... most impressive... Additionally, my coffee cup never came close to being empty... The place was clean and appeared to be well maintained... The decor is of a railroad motif... Parking was ample with easy access from the highway... I do HIGHLY RECOMMEND the Squeaky Rail for a visit to get a great breakfast... PS: We have the same breakfast everywhere we go so I can compare "apples to apples"... read more

I gave this 5 stars because it is got to be one of the WORST places I have ever been. It might have been nice once, Before you sit down, visit the restrooms. is that black mold? I saw a dead roach in the ladies room, was that part of the decor? Now for the dining. My stomach is still trying to decide if it wants to upchuck. When did zucchini come as fried tubes like fish sticks...omg..when they say your sandwich comes with chips, lol, they do, a small bag of what looked like smashed lays. It's been many years since I have been here. The last if I remember correctly. Is the reason that I haven't been back. Today service was friendly and polite. My order was hot and came out in good time. Overall flavor was not a home run. But was a little better than average. If I had to say something negative about this visit. It was 75 degrees in this place and was extremely uncomfortable. Based on this visit I will come back. And recommend this place. Service was the best part of my experience today. read more

Ok. A standard diner experience. Table had country fried steak - large portion and lots of sides. Also had a California Benedict - eggs poached just right but avocado was not ripe enough. First time here, after googling best breakfast in Enola. Glad I didn't see the Yelp score before showing - don't know why it's rated ! I had a great experience! Came in early Friday, place was less than 20% full, multiple staff members greeted me and I got seated immediately. Was greeted promptly, got my drinks quickly, menu felt simple & easy to read, which allowed me to place my order right away. The waitress seemed to know some of the regulars and was casually table-checking. The food was great. Hot, large portion. I'm leaving full. I always check a place's country fried steak as my first thing to try from a new breakfast joint I haven't been to -- I'll have to stop by here again next time I'm in Enola. Great for breakfast. Bacon was crispy. The eggs were perfectly over light. The rye was perfectly toasted and nicely buttered. And the potatoes! To me, the true measure of a diner breakfast is the potatoes and these were stellar. Crispy on the outside and fluffy on the inside. Our server kept our coffee cups full too. I arrived famished for lunch!!! I was told there was a shift change but saw only one other staff member come in. Anyway service was quick and friendly by Shanon. We got a sea and turf platter with steak, stuffed flounder with crap, mash, Cole slaw, crab soup. Also ordered broccoli and cheese stuffed chicken breast with string beans, mash and salad, a cup of crab soup. The steak was well seasoned but not cooked right. It needed to be cooked in higher heat to get the fats browned. The mash needed salt and a bit of butter. The crab soup was better when we added half n half to drown down the salt. A bit of butter would've helped to! The salads where basic just baby mixed greens, grape tomatoes, red onions and a few cucumbers. I asked for oil and vinegar, I got a bit of old vinegar. I wasn't sure if it was old red wine or old balsamic maybe watered down. I looked old or dirty. The oil was a small amount as well. If a customer asks for oil and vinegar and you're going to bring that little caddy don't you think it should be refilled before you bring it to the table? Anyway the flounder stuffed with crab meat was ok. It would've been better if stuffing had a bit of butter and lemon rind in it. The top of flounder was dry and it should've had a butter crumb on top sprinkled with dill and olive oil drizzle. The string beans were fresh out of a can. Low sodium but no other flavor. It could use some garlic powder and cumin. It was like eating at a hospital. The bathrooms need to be cleaned. There's dirt on walls, baby changing table, faucets, cabinets, doors, floors. The chairs in dinning hall look like they have layers and layers of dirt. The blinds all need to be wiped clean some have dried food bits. It was so gross! First and last time I'll come here. The food was very good although I got (heavily) buttered toast, when I asked for it dry. I was served decaf coffee that 6 creamers couldn't tame!! Someone(not my waitress) came to ask if it was ok. She said she was making a new pot because she saw how old it was. Next cup was ok w just 2 creamers! Although nice historical railroad pictures were nice to look at, that's the only nice thing about its decor. I will not go there again due to the ladies room was filthy! When we went to the diner, we were going to celebrate our family gathering. It's was supposed to be good. Now we know it was disgusting and to never go back again. We found a nose hair into my food and we saw a guy rubbing his butt and dropped an egg and picked it up and put it back onto our plates. Let me set the stage.. we walk in and no one even greets us.. waitresses are standing around talking with each other and no one is paying attention to the front. A table busser is standing behind the bar counter eating butter from the little butter packets. This should have been enough to turn right around and leave but we were hungry and heard the food was good.. wrong! The waitress was nice and got our drinks right away.. then we sat.. coffee was mediocre, water was tap and we waited. Food came.. steak was raw, Benedict was over cooked and cold, pancakes had hair in them.. hair!! That's when we were told our bill had been comped and we left. A group of veterans and family got together here to catch up in person following a year of primarily virtual contact.. I enjoyed a Chicken Mediterranean wrap that was hardy and delicious. I drank hot tea.. Pictures on the walls portrayed railroad history in keeping with the restaurant's name and theme. Waitstaff were kept busy with frequent rotation of customers. Kudos and much thanks to Molly for providing outstanding service. This is a terrific gathering place in an ideal location off routes 11/15. read more

I really like the food and have been a regular for quite some time. However, the service is going down the tubes. There are a couple of servers who do a great job, but the rest not so much. Tonight I walked out after nobody even acknowledged me sitting there waiting to be served. The servers were all sitting at the counter chatting and ignoring the few customers in the place. I respect that servers do not have easy jobs, and I go above and beyond to be respectful, not be demanding or critical, and I tip well. On two separate occasions, I overheard servers explaining to customers why it is so important that tips be given in cash and not included on credit/debit card payments. This was something I had never thought about, so to this day I now leave cash tips. It's no longer worth it to me to drive to Enola to eat there. Sorry to say that, but I feel let down. read more

We were in the area for a few minutes and wanted to grab a quick but good bite at a kid friendly place before continuing on our trip, this place checked off all the boxes. The only reason I didn't give it a 5 was the bathrooms were a mess and in bad need of remodel and the outside was in need of cleaning up and landscaping. The bathrooms really drove this rating. Otherwise the food was really good "diner fare". Around the table we got a club sandwich, patty melt, salad, ham and our son got pancakes. The service was amazing, our waitress had a great sense of humor, everything was spot on and when our 3yr/old asked for pancakes he said he wanted Mickey pancakes. We told him they would be regular pancakes but she brought us pancakes that looked like Mickey Mouse!! All in all a great diner. It's not fancy, but it has it where it counts. read more

However, I saw the server across from my table walking across the dining room wiping her nose with the back of her hand, a big long wipe. Anyhow this woman was at the register when I went to cash out, she had her hand out for $$, didn't ask how everything was, didn't say thank you, just put the receipt down and turned her back on me and proceeded to take the cash drawer out. Formerly the Summerdale Diner, I visited here with two friends on a count that I have never visited here before and always wanted to try it with the new ownership. Yes, the prices are quite fair. But the food is solidly mediocre (nothing home to write about) and the service is quite inconsistent. I got the Squeaky Rail Feast and I asked for Canadian bacon instead of real bacon and messed up. Instead of pancakes, I got French Toast. While it is big and tasty, you only get two pieces and that makes it a slight letdown. I also felt the two pieces of toast it comes with were over toasted. The "home fries" were also overdone. It also came with juice, which I got cranberry, and while it came in a nice size, tasted too sour for me. Another friend got the Monte Cristo and it looked great, but outside of a pickle there is not much it comes with. When it comes to eating here, stick to basics and nothing more. That way you will not be disappointed with the end result. read more

We were on our way back home and my husband wanted some lunch. He didn't see any place he wanted to try as we headed south on I-81. So, we agreed that once we got on Route 15, we would try someplace in Enola. When we saw the Squeaky Rail, I suggested stopping in. I told my husband that if the place didn't look clean, we wouldn't eat there. Upon entering, it indeed looked clean. We were greeted and seated immediately. We were here around 2:30 p.m. on a Thursday and the place wasn't very busy. We were looking for a not too filling meal so we zeroed in on the sandwiches. I saw that they had a grilled cheese sandwich and for a little extra money, you could add bacon or ham. Our waiter showed up to take our drink orders. The drinks aren't listed on the menu so I asked him what they had. He said, soda, iced tea and juice. So I asked if they had ginger ale. He said "nope". Well, what did they have? Pepsi products, it appears so we both ordered a root beer. I ended up ordering a grilled cheese sandwich with bacon. It comes with chips and a pickle. The server asked if I wanted fries---no, just the chips. My husband ordered a BLT which also came with chips and a pickle. The grilled cheese sandwich, while edible, was the worst grilled cheese sandwich I ever had. It didn't even hold together as it was easy to separate the bread from the filling. So, I looked closely and noticed how incredibly stingy they were with the cheese, with 2 very thin slices that didn't even cover the bread. The bacon portion was generous enough but the cheese barely registered. I know that the grill needs to be greased to cook a grilled cheese sandwich but my sandwich was super greasy. The chips came in a bag and were a local brand that is made in York, PA (I forget the name), they were okay. My husband found his BLT to be decent enough which had me wishing that I, too, had ordered one. He said he would eat it again. While our server was attentive, he wasn't the friendliest---not rude or nasty just on the abrupt side---I guess that's the best way to put it. Before the tip, lunch cost $14 + change, so no complaints about the price. Like many diners, you pay at the register. We don't know if we'll stop in again next time we're driving through. For a traditional 24/7 Family Diner, I was actually impressed. After our last concert, a friend of ours in the chorus recommended this place as a way to basically celebrate a season well done. Well, we had the restaurant mostly to ourselves, it was about 8:30 when we arrived. They had already set up for a very large group like we had. I got their Honey Dipped Chicken and a side of fries, mashed potatoes with Chicken Corn Noodle soup. The soup was good, though you all know I prefer the kind with the large Dough Balls in it. The Chicken reminded me of Silver Springs a bit in both size and taste. The mashed potatoes were a little on the cold side, but I didn't really care as I enjoyed the food. The server was also very quick in getting refills even with the big group The place isn't perfect, but I liked the food enough that I would like to come here again if I'm ever in the Enola area. Stopped in around 8:30PM with four friends. We were seated quickly and the waitress was quick to take our drink orders and continued to check on us until we are ready to order. There are a lot of menu options so it took us a bit to decide what we wanted. After placing orders out food arrived our meals arrived in about ten minutes tasting hot and fresh. I ordered the open faced roast beef sandwich with mashed potatoes and applesauces. Everything was good but it was obvious the gravy came from a jar and wasn't homemade which was disappointing. The other people at my table ordered salads, soups, ham dinner, and a gyro. Everyone said their food was good and they would order it again. Our entire meal for 5 people with drinks wasn't even $55. Really a great deal! It's nice this diner is open 24/7 and even later at night you can get a quality meal at a great price. We will definitely be returning! read more

It's been a long time since I've stopped here for breakfast. Glad I did for sure! Biscuits and Sausage Gravy was amazing and those biscuits were definitely freshly made. Been coming since Great Grandson was born, 3 years ago. Was coming 2-3 nights a week. At first, everything was good. Except for the High Chairs/Booster Seats which were always dirty. Bathrooms are very lacking. However, this past 2 months, things have changed and not for the good. We always ordered mac 'n' cheese for my grandson. Lately, when it comes it has strands of mac that are hard as rock, like they were scraped from around the edge of the pan. Til I picked them out, there was hardly any "good" mac to eat. Stopped ordering that. I always get Country Omelet, no gravy. Omelet was nice sized and very good. Was in last Thursday, omelet came out like it was scrambled not in omelet form. That was ok, I ordered a side of Home Fries w/onions and the order was nice sized. Ordered same thing last night, omelet was small, side of hash browns were a joke. So many onions you couldn't see potatoes, turned out there were hardly any. Very small size. When I pay, I always add the tip to the card. Past 3-4 months it depends on who it at the register. All of a sudden, I cannot add tip to card. I said I always did this and they tell I couldn't have because they are not allowed to do that. Last night, the girl said she never heard of that rule and was able to add tip to card. There is no consistency in the food and the form of payment. Service used to be great but too many staff changes. We come in, everyone is behind counter "Chatting". No greeting. They always forget something that you have to ask for it. I got to the Squaky Rail Diner during a slow time, so I was sat down immediately. The waitress was very nice the entire time and when I ordered my food (the Mushroom Swiss Burger with a side of French Fries), it got to me fairly quick (approx. 10 minutes maybe). The food was cooked to perfection, however I wish they didn't put so many onions on it. My roommate, who was also with me, ordered three slices of French toast. They were cooked well, however it was the first time we have been to a diner where the syrup comes in little packets. All in all, the service was good!
