Solid sweet and sour pork. I have been thinking about when I'll be getting it again.

We got a Nasi Lemak and a few Kaya Toasts, along with a Kopi Tarik. Everything was really good! The Kaya toast was bigger than what you'd get in Asia, with more Kaya in it too, but just as delicious with a comforting flavor. Nasi Lemak is my favorite all time dish, and this one hit the spot as well. It came with a generous amount of anchovies/peanuts and the sambal it came with was great. If I had to nitpick, I do wish the rice had a bit more flavor, but not a big deal. The kopi was really good, though I wish it came earlier with the toast instead of after we got all our food. Not a big deal, and service was good other than that. The restaurant had a good amount of tables and barstool seating, although it filled up completely by 1pm! If you want some Malaysian/Singaporean in NYC, this place is a must!

Some items really shine, while others feel a bit flat. The Hainanese chicken was disappointing to say the least, it was very dry. The kaya toast on the other hand was a big win, subtle coconut flavor and floral pandan comes through with the cream filling between buttery toast. The calamansi drink was very artificial and overly sweet.

My favorite was the roti canai, but all of the savory dishes were very good and comforting. I normally never finish my rice, but the chicken rice went very well with the tom yum soup. For dessert, we ordered the ABC, which was a shaved ice dish with a variety of toppings. I didn't enjoy it as much as the other dishes, but it was refreshing and light. This meal came out to be about $35 per person after tax and tip.

They also had small pieces of chicken in the spicy sauce. The beef skewers were amazing!!! Heavenly! They were juicy and so so flavorful even without the dipping sauce. It is clean and roomy inside.

Urban Hawker isn't a restaurant, but a food hall with lots of Singaporean and Malaysian food vendors. This means lots of different options to choose from. :) We split a Hainanese chicken rice plate and an order of chicken and lamb skewers, both of which tasted very yummy. From my initial impression, I was honestly kind of underwhelmed. When I first entered, it seemed like a ghost town with so many of the tables empty like it had just opened minutes ago. Towards the later evening after 6:30-7pm, it started to get packed towards the back. This food hall consisted of several stalls mostly Singaporean & Indian cuisines - with some hint of Filipino, Chinese, Malaysian , etc. You order, find a table and pick up your food when it's ready. [Just note that some dishes come out in plastic containers as if you are taking it to-go even though you are dining in]. I opted for a Singaporean spot called Prawnaholic and opted for the #3 HOKKIEN MEE. Don't get me wrong, it was good. But I'm not sure that the dish was that good to equate the cost in terms of portion size or taste. Maybe if it was slightly cheaper, I could make sense of coming back, but otherwise, I think I would prefer buying other dishes elsewhere. Overall, I find that price are high (typical midtown prices for foods) for average tasting foods. I personally was okay with trying it once and would prefer other food options as opposed to this food hall.

My order: Garlic Noodles- Add Tofu ($1.00) and Add extra Soft Boiled Egg ($1.75) "Light and savory noodle soaked in house soy sauce, topped with soy egg, bok choy, crispy garlic and scallion." Their description is perfect and I love that the noodles came with a generous portion of perfectly cooked and well-seasoned bok choy! The tofu was delicious and I am so glad I added an extra soft boiled egg. I have consumed a LOT of soy eggs in my life, even been blessed to have past korean roommates make for me regularly- this was the BEST, most flavorful and perfect texture soy egg I have had - maybe even including the ones consumed in Japan I decided to indulge with the Crispy Shrimp Fritters appetizer $7.00 "Crispy shrimp (4 pieces) coated in our homemade batter, with sweet chili dipping sauce" If I had known how delicious and generous a portion the garlic noodles were, I wouldn't have ordered this app as it was simply not needed- however I am glad I did as the shrimp were delicious and perfectly cooked! We opted for the 15 course dinner that samples through their entire menu. It is a perfect amount of food for two people and I recommend this experience very much. The meal starts with a cozy chicken and noodle broth soup which was so warming and comforting, just what the doctor ordered in this weather. The second round of food was two types of salad and a corn fritter. I loved the pickled salads as they had a nice crunch to them and tasted delicious. The fritters are a good size but a little bit greasier than I liked. The last round is where all the curries are brought out on a hot plate. There's shrimp, lamb, beef rendang, chicken, tofu etc. There's also white rice and skewers of chicken and beef satay coated in a delicious peanut sauce. Some of the curries I liked very much - like the fried tofu and the sauce on the shrimp curry was divine. Beef rendang fell a little flat for me as it wasn't as decadent, thick or spicy like authentic rendang is. The lamb curry had a sweet taste which I found a little odd. The chicken satay was juicy and delicious but the beef satay was rubbery and hard to chew and a weird texture. I definitely expect better from a satay skewer. Our server was kind and kept the flow of the food going. The final course is a little coconut pandan flan which was very very good but the texture is firmer than what I like. Flan should definitely be a bit softer and creamier. Either way it's tough to nail a 15 course dinner expertly but I do think if they made a few needed changes to the quality of food this would easily be a 5 star experience! If you live nearby, definitely give this beautiful cozy family run restaurant a try!!

My husband said it was a 4.25/5, and next time he would want a normal dish. I wish they had a vegetarian Rijsttafel (like in the places we found in Amsterdam), but they had a ton of vegetarian dishes regardless. I went a little overboard and ordered the tofu sate, gado gado, and kare sayur. The tofu sate with the peanut sauce was amazing, but my favorite was the gado gado. I was so happy. That peanut sauce is incredible. The waitress said the kare sayur is a popular dish with vegetarians, but it didn't blow me away like the other dishes. It was a trek to get out here from Manhattan, but I would do it again. The two ladies working at the restaurant were so warm and friendly. I was very happy.

So when the server asked us what we'd like to drink, we asked for hot water (later found out we were charged $1 for each cup of hot water). We ordered the beef rendang, chicken satay and singapore noodles (with tofu and vegetables). I had been hoping to try the soft shelled crab but perhaps it's out of season or no longer on the menu as I didn't see it. The chicken satay came out first, it was 4 sticks of skewered chicken drenched in a slightly spicy creamy peanut sauce. This was the second favorite dish of the table as the chicken was tender and the peanut sauce paired well with it. The singapore noodles were unexpected the favorite of the table. The flavor profiles weren't too crazy just a simple curry flavor but mixed with the thin noodles and other ingredients, it was savory and not too heavy to eat a lot of. The beef rendang was the last dish to come out, the beef pieces were very tender and this was the spiciest dish out of all 3 that we had ordered. It came with about a bowl's worth of white rice on the side and some cucumbers and purple cabbage salad. It was a pretty okay lunch. Not the best Malaysian food I've had (Chinatown is still the best spot for me) but it's a good spot if you're craving Malaysian food in the west village area. Bathrooms were immaculately clean which is always a plus.
