Simply awful cake decorating. The past three things I've ordered have not looked professional. The latest, and worst was my daughters first birthday cake. Instead of a pink and yellow sunshine I got a incredibly poorly planned and terribly executed cake straight out of the 90s. It's laughably awful. The sun is smushed and so is the lettering in addition to being super ugly and not at all what I ordered for a girls first birthday party. I could have saved my $50 and made a better cake myself with absolutely no baking skills. I want to love Wixeys, but this cake is the last straw. read more

Peanut butter tortes to my right. Pastries and cookies directly in front of me. Cakes and rolls to my left. Be still my heart! It's not hard finding Wixey Bakery, because the sweet smell emanating from the bakery will lead you right to its front doors. With the countless options of sweets and goodies, it's difficult to pick out what exactly it is that you want. I personally was torn between the tortes, the pumpkin rolls, the turnovers, the cannolis, the brownies, the cookies, and pretty much everything WB had to offer really. Somehow I managed to come home with only a chocolate cannoli and a chocolate cupcake. (That doesn't mean I won't be back, however, because I will -- but only when I have company so I don't eat an entire box of sweets on my own :)) While the chocolate cupcake wasn't as moist as I wanted it to be, I had to remind myself that this was not a cupcakery so, by bakery standards, it was still pretty good. The cannoli, on the other hand, was absolutely divine. With the right blend of crispiness and creaminess, they alone warrant a second trip back. One of my friends tells me that WB has been around since who knows how long. Apparently most Toledoans also order their wedding cakes here so this bakery must be doing something right (aside from the pastries, that is!) read more

I'm not from Ohio myself, but my dad is a Toledo-an, born and bred. My grandparents still live in the great city of Toledo, and growing up, we would spend one week of our summer visiting our family. There would always be one special day each trip, where my siblings and I would wake up early with my dad to pick up doughnuts at Wixey's. This was my favorite part of vacation. We would rise early, pile into the car, and drive around my dad's childhood neighborhood. As the car rolled slowly through the streets, he would point out the houses of his friends, his grandparents, and his own. Then, the car would turn toward Glendale Ave, towards Wixey's. I love my dad's story of how he asked his bus driver to pick him up at Wixey's rather than outside his house. He would wake extra early, walk to Wixey's, order a couple jelly rolls and stuff them in his mouth while he stood in the doorway waiting for the bus. According to my dad, there were more fields and less concrete when he was a boy, but I'm glad one thing has not changed. I'm glad Wixey's is still there. As a kid I loved taking that first step into the bakery, the smell of freshly baked dough and sugary toppings curling into my nostrils. I would press my face to the glass, peer down at the doughnuts, and wait eagerly while dad placed our order. We'd bring them back to grandma and grandpa's, a dozen jelly rolls and a half a dozen cinnamon rolls that would never live to see the sunrise. My sisters and I would pack back jelly rolls until the sweet jelly fillings made us sick. We'd be chastised by our parents, and would barely move the rest of the morning, but if we could do it all again we would. Half of me wishes I lived in Toledo, but the other half of me is glad: if I lived anywhere in a 30 mile radius of this establishment, jelly would run through my veins. If you think you've had the best jelly roll around, but haven't been to Wixey's, put everything down and head straight to 2017 Glendale Ave. It's quite possible these doughnuts are Heaven-sent. read more

I am baffled how anyone can give this place above 2 stars. Maybe the customer service is great, which makes up for the AWFUL baked goods. I take that back, the birthday cake was OK - nothing great - Costco makes a way better cake actually. I'll admit, the icing was REALLY good on that birthday cake, though. :) What I was most disappointed in was the cookies! They are awful and dry! Each one (and I tried 6 different kinds)! I call myself the cookie connoisseur aka the cookie monster and let me tell you, the real cookie monster would probably spit these cookies out over the trash can, just like me. Not worth the trip. My MIL travels across country to bring us one of these gems for our birthdays.....Birthdays are not the same without them. There is a place in heaven for the baker of these devilish delights....and I am requesting the room next door to him! LOL The owners are very helpful and go above and beyond the call of duty (as they say!). I wish I could give them 6 stars. Great quality and selection, great service. My only wish is that I could get fresh donuts on Sunday morning, but that's a minor thing in the long run. There is a reason Wixey has been around for generations. The donuts are the best, and the cakes are my first choice for birthdays. Always fast, always smiling. I wish they were closer to me. Donuts are up to over a dollar a piece these days, so plan on paying like $15 or more for a dozen donuts. But they are worth it. Make sure they throw in an apple fritter. Their honest and fair prices, matched with their authenticity and home-grown charm stands them apart from chain bakeries (you know the kind I am talking about - do you really want to buy your pastries from a place that also sells laundry detergent and diapers?). Parking is easy to find on a side street or in front of the bakery. Located right off the Trail on Glendale, there is no excuse for anyone passing by to not stop and taste a part of Toledo history. I have had a Wixey Bakery cake every year for my birthday and I have never been dissatisfied. Marble, chocolate, carrot - you will not be disappointed with any of their cakes. Their donuts are also delicious, especially the cake donuts! Wixey's specialty is their cakes (cupcakes - YUM). However, I recently had their chocolate chip cookies and they were nothing special and really hard. Stick with the cakes. read more

After a disappointing visit at another popular Toledo bakery, we went to Wixey Bakery--it was a completely different experience! We were treated very well, the customer service was fantastic. The baker and staff went out of their way to work with us to design a wedding and groom's cake that were picture perfect. The groom's cake was a fantastic replica of a Titleist golf ball and the wedding cake was elegant and lovely. The cakes were delivered timely and in perfect condition to our venue. We received rave reviews from our guests about the taste of the cakes. In addition to the service and the quality of the cakes, the price was right. Whoaaaa NEVER ever heard of this bakery until this last Sunday. We had a baby shower at the Lodge at Strawberry Acres - having lived in this part of town for 33 years - glendale was not part of our stomping grounds. My sister was in charge of the cupcakes and I'm sure glad she was. She brought some of the best cupcakes ever ! Simple, yellow ones with chocolate frosting. Reading the rest of the reviews, I have got to put this place on my list to check out. If I could give this review zero stars, I completely would. I don't even know where to begin with this. So my family ordered a birthday cake a couple of weeks in advance, and it was a $70 cake with custom decorating. We were super excited, and we were even driving two hours into town to pick it up! However, the day that I was to pick up the cake, the bakery called at noon to inform me that the cake decorator called off sick and that I wouldn't be able to get the cake I wanted. I understood that things like that happen, but was disappointed that they called us so last minute because we no longer had any other options. They said they could still make me a cake, but it would have to have very simple decorations and not the design that I wanted. I agreed, however I felt that I shouldn't have to pay the full $70 for the cake when it wasn't what I wanted, it wasn't my fault that it was unable to be made, and I was paying the more expensive price for the custom decorating. The worker asked the owner if she could fix the price and she said that they could give us half off. I still wasn't happy with it, but I paid the money. When I paid, the worker agreed that I shouldn't have to have even paid that for the cake that I received and gave us the owner's contact information and said to call her for a full refund. This is when things got bad. I've never experienced such horrible customer service in my entire life. When I called the owner, she was EXTREMELY RUDE. I couldn't believe it. She fought with me and said that I should have been happy we received a cake at all (even though we placed the order weeks in advance??) and she thought that half off was reasonable. She also wouldn't let me talk and interrupted constantly when I was politely trying to explain how I drove two hours and the reason behind why I felt that I shouldn't have to pay what we did. She finally got so fed up that she just handed over the phone to someone else to refund my money. I've grown up in Toledo my entire life and I know this bakery has had a good reputation for years, and I'm so disappointed that they would get so upset and unprofessional over losing $30 on a cake. The owner said, "go ahead and leave me a review on Yelp, that's fine but I don't think that's very fair because you still got a cake", so here it is for you. There are several other bakeries in Toledo I will be choosing to take my business to from here on out, and I would recommend you do the same. read more

I placed an order for Birthday Cupcakes From this bakery and was running 4 minutes late... yes 4 minutes late and the employees working were very disrespectful and unhelpful. The older woman and younger woman made me feel so incredibly stupid for even trying to pick up my order when I was a few minutes late. When I called saying I would pick it up at 3:30 no one told me they closed at 4 And I was unaware of that. I was told that it was so inconvenient for them to give them to me even though they were ready to be picked up and that I was messing up their whole system By even trying to pick it up. I told them don't even worry about it I don't need them because it caused such a big deal to them and she said "I don't want them to go waste so just give me your card I guess and I'll figure it out." Been going here for years. Not sure how long they've been around but I've gone here for over 25 years and I know they had been around a long time when I first started going here and I understand why. The glazed donuts are amazing. Love the cookies and there is a great ice cream place next door open in the warmer months. Prices are very reasonable. I've had cakes at a couple weddings that were unbelieveable. When my parents celebrated their 50th anniversary a few years ago I bought the cake from their and a lot of people commented it was the best cake they ever had. We chose to go to wixey bakery for our daughters first birthday cake... BIG MISTAKE...we typically love using small mom n pop/ local type places when were able to. We like to support the community. But, in August our daughter turned 1. We went to wixey... we ordered a small round cake with hello kitty. My fiance is the one who went and ordered. He spelled the babies name for her. No biggie... $50 later cake was ordered and ready for pick up on Saturday for the big day. (Middle of august!!) That saturday my fiance grabbed the cake on the way to the party. He said there were a couple people in there... They gave him a quick glimpse of the cake and he was on the way to the party . He got to my MILs house ...i looked at it and the frosting had several cracks (no huge biggie) but my problem is the hello kitty on the front was drawn (still no huge deal) but it honestly looked as if a 5 year old drew it. Not to mention the cake waz DRY!!! I am going to post photos. Anyhow. They also spelled my daughters name wrong MADALYNN was spelled MADDALYN (this was not even a huge deal as I scraped it off and reprinted her name) - i called two days later (they arent opened on sunday and i was not available on monday) i was told to call and speak with the owner .before 11am....When I called either wednesday or even maybe it was thursday...to speak to the OWNER... she said she was going to " speak with her employee and call me back." She didnt!!! So two weeks passed. I called and spoke with her again. She seemed irritated thatd i called back...and said she would offer Me a gift card... whatever. But she said she needed to find my slip and "call me back" (again...she DIDN'T this is now the second time she has neglected to call me back when she said she would) so, being pretty upset..i called again (around october. So a couple MORE weeks had passed)..after her getting snotty and rude with me.. she said "i offered a gift card and thats it." My response is, I dont want to spend that amount of money for shitty service and a cake that looked like a child did it. Why would that be acceptable? This is SUPPOSED to be a professional place of buisness...not a hack shop..she said her business has been in buisness for 85 years.so what? Other buisness have been here longer..look at the major car manufacturers. ..and sometimes they just go down hill with time (with the help of crappy customer service and management- which Seems to be the case in this instance).. i told her I'd have my fiance give her a call and she had some snide remark "oh the same fiance that spelled your child's name wrong?" .....Wow how immature? He didn't spell her name incoorectly. He even double checked. Maybe just maybe the employee spelled it incorrectly.... the spelling of the name wasn't as important as the presentation of the cake...and then to give your customer a bitch attitude? No thanks. I made 5 trips there even making suggestions for the AT&T Techs to get there phone lines over a ditch. I even took down one cable I had installed previous & re-installed it because the AT&T Techs put the "Dmarc" in a different area than me & the owner, Ryan planned. There secretary/accountant Denise & the owner Ryan has ignored my phone calls and faxes for payment. The work was finished May 2019. It is now February 2020. can't figure out where all those 5 star reviews came from. Wixey is sub par common. I had great hopes with all those stars - and what a disappointment. I tried mixed donuts - jelly, yeast/raised, sweet rolls, danish, maple iced. the danish were the worst-don't even go there. Sweet rolls seem to be made of common bread dough, not a sweet roll dough; making them tough not tender and it didn't help that they were well over baked; cinnamon filling sparse and the icing tasting chemical-y. Yeast/raised ok but without the crispy crust and under-sweet for me. The best of the donuts was the cinnamon swirled maple iced one with the crunchies on top - flavor and softness were all there. The best cookie was the oatmeal raisin. They called it gourmet but it was nice and homestyle filled with raisins. Filled cookies were just ok and reminded me of Archway fruit filled cookies. No cupcakes to buy and would really like to have had a chocolate donut or cake ones. totally disappointing. There were a few loaves of bread on the shelf but just common white nothing whole grain, flavored gourmet, round, etc. Really, there are better bakeries in the Toledo area, seek them out. They know if you aren't a regular customer and treat you accordingly. It is a little hole in the wall with prices that will curl your hair. On my first visit, I purchased a small container of bread pudding that was about a 6 on a scale of 1-10. Not bad, so I thought I would give it another try and returned to the shop for more. Much to my surprise, on my second visit I was informed that Wixey Bakery has never had and will never have bread pudding even though 10 days ago I was there and purchased bread pudding. What is upsetting about the entire situation is that the gal behind the counter was downright rude about it and being rude was not necessary. I will never go there again. read more
