Update from my previous post. I believe they have finally learned how to fill a Long John! This is the second time my wife stopped and picked us up something and both times now The donut has been full of cream. That is as it should be so I'm raising my star up to four. And I do recommend the Long John's or as some call them cream-filled straight they are excellent now. read more

Got my gender reveal cake here. It was ok- not the most delicious or moist cake I've ever had. I remember thinking it was a bit pricey and the decoration wasn't the most intricate. The person who took my order was efficient and also dry. She did not seem one bit excited to be working on a cake. Would it be my top choice for a cake? My son purchased a cake for me for my Birthday. It was the most horrible, embarrassing, experience of my life. When we took it out of the box, it start to slump to the side and the frosting started to ooze out. The frosting was so thick and gooey, at least two inches thick. Then, when we cut into the cake, there was an actual round hole going in sideways into the cake.. (a mouse?) I don't know. The cake was not great. I put it in the refrigerator that night trying to stabilize the oozing frosting. The next morning I took the remainder to my other son. They ate some. As they sat there the frosting collapsed and the frosting actually fell off the cake exposing a bare cake. They threw the cake out. I can't in any way imagine what happened in that kitchen, but it was terrible. read more

This place is underrated because you'd be surprised at how big this place is, as they have a lot of cooking equipment and supplies in the back. They stock some unusual food items (e.g., Stonewall Kitchen) and have a bakery up front. The bakery is definitely hit-or-miss on their items. For example, the Boston Cream Pie has consistently been the best I ever had, while the donuts are subpar and more often stale than not. read more

This is the perfect place for anyone wanting to create a culinary masterpiece. They have anything that you can think of for baking, kitchen utensils, and kitchen appliances. I also love that they have a little bakery and coffee's area right when you walk in the door that has fresh baked goods that start off your morning on a sweet note. I had the apple cinnamon scone and it was delicious and perfectly made but wasn't as dry as usual scones that I've had in the past, which made this even more tasty. I could spend all day wondering around looking at the mass selection of goods. I know you are wondering then why only 2 stars? They have crammed 10lbs in a 2lb bag. The place is so small. Aisles are narrow and they have crap on the floors and hanging from the shelves. No place for 2 shoppers to pass in the aisles and made me feel a bit trapped. The aisles were a maze. So this review is on the actual cake that I ordered. I had ordered a cake for my friend's gender reveal party. They were good about working with us to offer to die the cake pink or blue if we needed. But we opted to do a 2 layer chocolate cake with pink/blue frosting in the middle (it was $1 extra to do the 2 layers with frosting in the middle) We only needed a small cake so we ordered a 6 inch round cake which was $8.99 which I thought was a good deal since they let us choose the flavor, and they decorated it how we liked. (This does NOT include any 3D fondant embellishments like letters, flowers or figurines. Those would cost extra and I believe would be priced as wedding cakes.) Note: Having the cake decorated in fondant costs more. Also, I recommend taking in a picture if you have a specific design in mind. I had previously used Thrush's to order a cake for my friend years ago and we took a picture in and the cake came out exactly how we wanted. This time, I didn't have time to print a picture and the design we wanted was pretty simple so I just showed the picture to the guy taking the order. The design didn't come out exactly what we had wanted but it was too late to change it (my friend wanted medium/large size polka dots going around the cake kind of like in this link: http://simplysweetsaz.blogspot.com/2011/05/gender-reveal-cake-pink-or-blue.html but they ended up being really tiny dots instead.) Not a big deal but not exactly what she wanted. I did notice that this cake that we ordered did have some flaws (as opposed to the cake I had ordered years ago). I'm not sure if that's because we picked it up the day before we needed it. They told us to store it in the fridge and it'd be ok. When we took the cake out the next day, there was a crack in the fondant on the one side. Also, the cake was kind of lopsided, which you can see in pictures when you look at the cake from the side. As for the taste, it was a chocolate cake with buttercream frosting and tasted pretty good. I gave Thrush's 4 stars because I'm giving them the benefit of the doubt and chalking up the flaws (crack and being lopsided) to the fact that we picked it up the day before. I'll probably use them again in the future but will remember to: 1) Take in a picture of the cake 2) They require at least 2 days notice for special order cakes 3) pick up the cake the same day it's needed if possible read more

Great stop on a Sunday morning for a donut and coffee to go. The two employees, one named Grace, were very friendly and quick behind the counter. The donuts are amazing!! One of the best bakeries that I have ever been to and believe me I have been to quite a few. I almost always have their cake. It is is so delicious! I love that you can buy it by the slice. If you do buy a whole cake, any leftovers freeze great. The cake is moist and tender whether fresh from the store or right out of you freezer. The store in the back has a great variety of baking goods and supplies. I even found a $17 Cuisinart can opener for my daughter. Everyone is friendly and helpful here. Don't miss this gem! read more

This has been a business we have patronized many times both for makes goods and items in the store, but that will happen no longer. When an inquiry was made my one of my children regarding a current position the person she talked with was very rude and made the comment that "being a college student wanting to work for the summer was of little value to them". We got a cake for my bridal shower at Thrush's and I will admit is was really good! We would maybe go there again for something not as significant. We feel like the person who wrote on the cake needs better handwriting and we don't understand why the writing is so small! It made the cake look amateur-ish. It was pretty disappointing. read more

I purchased a package of ready to use fondant from them and expressed my concern that the product was hard as a rock. I was reassured that this was normal and that I just had to work it. After attempting to work it and knead it for half an hour and only ending up with sore hands I checked that package and saw that it expired over a year ago. The event that I need it for is in two days and I don't have the time to go in so I called to inform them about the expired product and they were not apologetic and didn't seem to care that their products are on the shelves well past date. I was very excited about having such a large kitchen store close by but now I will it be shopping with them ever again! read more

Great selection of items if overpriced. General costs are a good 25% above other shops. The balsamic olive oil selections are fantastic and delicious. I've tried many of the various baked goods and generally find them to be overly sweet and somewhat commercial tasting. If you like a lot of frosting and sugar this is the place for you. If you're looking for a delicate pastry I would look somewhere else. They could certainly do with a redesign of the checkout area. You cannot get to the kitchen store without throwing a few elbows at people standing at the pastry counter. read more

I have ordered supplies, mostly sprinkles, from this company. Their prices are affordable, unfortunately their packaging is pretty terrible. Every time I order sprinkles, they never put any cushioning or protection so the sprinkles bounce around the box and they bust open. My last order of sprinkles had to be delivered in a USPS box because sprinkles were making a mess in the post office!!! But they have blocked me from being a customer because they've had "to many problems shipping to our address". Um, what kind of customer service is that??? Unacceptable. After this, I'll never order from them again. It's not my fault that you don't know how to pack your products. Once they're out of packaging, they're contaminated and cannot be used. read more

I went to pick up my daughters Birthday cake and the young lady said it was going to be $26.99. I told her that they quoted me $21.99 on the phone. She said that it was a special design and that it was $5 extra. I noticed then that the handwriting was smudged and there was black icing running down the side of the cake. I almost thought I don't want this, but I did not want to disappoint my daughter. With my unhappy purchase, I took it home. My daughter was less than impressed and said I could have done a better job! If we had her friends over, she would have been embarrassed! I called the office the next day and left a message, no one returned my call. I went in two days later and explained the situation and showed the manager the pictures. I told her about being charged the extra $5 for the design. She barely acknowledged what I was saying and was busy refunding my $5. She did not apologize or ask to make it right! The cake looked beautiful and price reasonable but I ordered chocolate frosting and it had plain white and the strawberry cake with a strawberry filling were bland, almost tasteless except for the flavor of sugar. I had a major craving for an eclair so I packed up my son and took a trip to Monclova to get one. While there I grabbed some other goodies for my other son and husband and we were on our way. I went to take a bit of the eclair and it was frozen. I was so disappointed and did not want to wait. I got a fudge frosted brownie that was perfect. I also got a cream puff. While not frozen the cream puff seemed to have seen better days, lots of other days. It was definitely stale and the cream filling had zero flavor and had a fake texture about it. I actually wondered if I was eating a display. It was awful. My husband had a bite and we threw it away. Seems they are more of a wine sale store than a bakery anymore. read more
