I will say that she's very patient and kind. The only feedback I could offer to her is to allow more of us to do more hands-on stuff in the beginning of the class. I do understand that she's teaching us how to use the instruments in the kitchen, but the point of the classes is to be interactive, and many of us spent 30 minutes in being in the class just watching which was essentially a waste of time because my philosophy is that you should be doing instead of watching. Now in terms of the chicken, the cooking process was long. It took around 1 1/2 hours to make the dinner which was all right, but most of us were hungry by the end. I will say the class was worth it for the French pastry. We made profiteroles which was super fun and a lot of us really loved it. The dinner was not very filling though and the class did not have enough chairs for us to sit down when we were going to eat our food. Many of the participants in the class were elderly in this required them to be standing up for 3 to 4 hours, which was very intense even for me. All in all, it's a very good concept, but I will say that they need to be more prepared to handle a large class volume, and they need to allow us to do more hands-on stuff instead of us watching, especially since we're paying money to learn how to cook!

The first cooking class was Latin steak night where we made steak with chimichurri and gelato for dessert. The second cooking class was crabcake with steak and garlic aïoli with oven roasted asparagus and chocolate lava cake. It was such a delicious meal. And she is a fantastic instructor. I've signed up for my third class and can hardly wait. As for the store itself, the staff are really nice. I've purchased a number of items here. If you take a cooking class you also get 10% off in the store which I took advantage of. They have a beautiful selection of just about everything you would ever need for your kitchen and serving goods. What's not to like about that?

Sprouting Chefs is new to the Ann Arbor area, and offers hands-on cooking classes for children and teens ages 8-16. Reasonably priced at $45 a session and conveniently located in the spacious kitchen of the Westminster Presbyterian Church on Scio Church Road, Sprouting Chefs offers attendees the chance to make new and theme based meals in a safe, fun and supportive environment. Throughout the 2 1/2 hour class, Lilian and an assistant provided supervision and instruction to the students, as they moved through all of the steps to make three age appropriate, yet creative menu items. In the class my daughter attended, they made a cucumber salad, homemade Southern-style macaroni and cheese, and mixed berry shortcakes with lemon curd. Completely at ease with the children, Lilian infused the class with instruction on technique, such as how to properly hold a knife; kitchen rules, such as to always say "behind" when you are coming behind someone with boiling water or a hot pan; and nutrition information, such as information on the differences between organic, locally grown and conventional produce. At the end of the class, which included a generous tasting of all the dishes, my daughter and her friends left with a take home bag of the dishes they had prepared and a recipe booklet so that they could make the recipes at home with their families. The girls had a wonderful time and I would highly recommend the class to other children and teens who enjoy and want to learn more about cooking.
