    rugelach and chai latte
    Scott W.

Okay, this review might be a bit of a stretch, but I felt compelled to write it. I have never been here, but my friend was. And they were kind enough to bring be back a package of the Currant Walnut Rugelach. Because my know my love of premium bake goods, and specific passion for pastries that go with Chai Latte, this was a real treat. I am thinking of making my own trip to Ann Arbor just to stop in a get some more. So good!

Quick service! The people working here were very efficient and kind. They had lots of pre-packaged soups and sandwiches. The mozzarella sandwich was great, the pesto was a nice touch. The lemon scone was light and soft.

What an incredible experience. Soo many sweets. I wanted to try them all. Incredible cakes . Amazing candies. We got my b day cake here and it was best I ever had . I will definitely go back.

    Graduation cake

Last year, we enjoyed a meal at Zingerman's Roadhouse and the cake from the Bakehouse was very good that we decided to order it again this year. I placed a phone order for pickup on graduation day and it was just as good. It is a full service bakery with lots of artisan bread and retail shop. My sister who was in town for graduation as well, wanted to pick up some sweets and couldn't decide between 2 items. The associate offered to let us sample the two which we did. He was knowledgeable about the sweets. And she ended up buying both! That is great customer service! Prices are on the higher end but it was worth it.

I love all of their spots. This is outstanding for high quality cakes and pastries. We always get company goodies here. The coffee cakes and breads are particularly fab!

    Rye bread

I stopped by to try their rye bread (bread of the month) and also impulsively picked up a pogcsa. I'm usually not a huge fan of rye bread, but this loaf was on the lighter side and had a perfect balance of flavors. The crumb was fine and even without huge holes in the bread. The crust was nice and chewy. As for the pogcsa, the worker described it as a cross between a biscuit and a scone. It fit in the palm of my hand, kind of an average size of a biscuit. It was flakey on the inside with laminated layers, and tasted of rich butter and a lot of dill. I'm glad to have tried it, although I probably wouldn't get it again since there's so many other things to try. The place was packed when I visited in the morning, but there were plenty of workers and the line moved quickly.

    chocolate eclair & OMG! cupcake

OMG! is right, the OMG! cupcake is a MUST for any chocolate lovers & the chocolate eclair was equally as perfect with it's creamy vanilla custard like filling. We treated ourselves to dessert while waiting on our deli order. Loved the ambiance and whole vibe of the Zingerman's world!

I really like their delicate ricotta donut (available Sundays only, from 8am) . It is airy and light, and almost like a Japanese pastry in sweetness (i.e. under-sweetened, compared to American taste in donuts/candy). Yet 1 is enough to be satisfied. I also like the vanilla cruller donut (Saturdays only)- this one is much sweeter and eggier, while not being too heavy- I have nicknamed it the poor woman's soufflé^_^

Wednesday lunch special grilled cheese and tomato soup - sells out!

This is going to sound snobby but I just don't like bread/bagels from the grocery store anymore. Zingerman's Bakehouse has ruined me. I am literally here 1-2x a week at this point. My go-to for fresh baked bread, my favorite poppyseed bagels, and really delicious and unique cream cheese. The bakehouse also has a to-go sandwiches (think more "normal" than the huge Z deli ones), soups, salads, pastries, cakes/cookies/brownies, frozen items, some pantry items, and a small selection of other Zingerman's favorites. All very high quality and fresh. Some of my favorite weekly specials - Dave Makes Pasta fresh pasta and sauce (new on Thursdays), their Sat morning vanilla cruller, and Wednesday lunch time grilled cheese and tomato soup (so good). My trick with bread loaves is to get them sliced in store for me, then when I get home, I'll take half of the loaf and stick it in the freezer. This allows us to get through the whole loaf without it getting stale. It's easy to pop a slice of frozen bread into the toaster and it tastes like new after we get through the fresh half. Location is easy to get to, with plenty of parking. Follow the signs or GPS if it's your first time, and when you get to the lane with purple/orange, you're in the right place. It seems to get extra busy around lunch time. Consistently nice and friendly workers, even when it's busy. Outdoor seating is great for lunch when the weather's nice. Might as well check out the Creamery, Coffee Shop, and Candy store while you're there! All in the same plaza. They each have different hours though, so make you look that up and plan accordingly! If you go here a lot for bread, make sure to get the bread punch card. Ten loaves to get a free loaf!

    King Cake Slice

Apparently I wasn't sick of paczki yet after eating a ton of them from three bakeries over the pre-paczki day weekend. On paczki day, I decided to try another two places and Zingerman's was the one I was most excited about. I had heard about a group of people who tried paczki at 15 different places around Ann Arbor and Detroit and found Zingerman's to be the best. Given that news and the fact that I love pretty much everything that Zingerman's Bakehouse puts out, my expectations were pretty high. I walked in the shop at approximately 10AM in the morning on Fat Tuesday and found a line nine parties deep, which is one of the busiest I've ever seen this shop. At this point, they had already run out of my top choice, rosehip, but they still had all the other flavors. I picked up two paczki and a slice of King Cake (also a limited special) to try out. King Cake Slice ($4.99) - This is a Northern French-style Galette des Rois rather than a New Orleans-style King Cake. This consisted of super buttery whole grain puff pastry layers that encapsulated a rich almond frangipane filling. The layers are baked until they develop a bit of a crunch. Instead of a light buttery taste I normally associate with puff pastry items, this one had a much deeper, nutty, browned taste. The layers kind of collapsed together and the cake overall didn't have nearly the height or puffiness that the pictures on Zingerman's Bakehouse website shows. The frangipane is heavily almond fragranced, very apparent smelling as soon as I lifted the pastry up. My first impression as I bit through the slice was that it was baked a bit too long, a bit dried out and mushed together. Then again, I haven't had an authentic slice of Galette des Rois before, so I don't know if it was over baked or is just supposed to be like this. Ricotta Paczki ($3.49) - The first thing I noticed was that this paczki was fried quite a bit unevenly - one side was way darker than the other. As I bit into it, the outermost layer kind of peeled off on both sides. This was kind of strange as it's something that didn't happen in any of the other paczki I tried. The dough was chewy, but the chew felt less like a brioche chew and more like a bready chew with a lot of gluten development. It was by far the most bread-like of the five bakeries I tried. I did like the filling - the tanginess of the ricotta really came through and balanced well with the slight sweetness of just a bit of added sugar. Chocolate Cream Paczki ($3.49) - This time the fry seemed to be to be similar on both side, but both sides were also quite dark, indicating that perhaps it was over-fried. In addition, the darker fried areas glistened in the light and made me wonder if it absorbed too much oil in the frying process. Then again, the skin didn't peel off of this one unlike the ricotta paczki. Texture-wise, it was pretty much the same as the ricotta. And again, I loved the filling; rich chocolate flavor with a perfect amount of sweetness that still allowed the natural bitterness of the chocolate to shine. Overall the paczki had great fillings but the dough was only okay. To be honest, these were probably some of the worst offerings I've gotten from Zingerman's, right next to their bagels. I'm not sure if it's just this batch that wasn't great or if they are always like this every year. I would not get them again given other bakeries around that are plainly better. If I had to rate the paczki by themselves they would be a 3 and the King Cake would be between a 3 and 4. Still, overall Zingerman's Bakehouse still deserves my original 5 star review given how great most of their other items are. Maybe I should just stay away from their once-in-a-year items.

Danishes shaped, filled and baked during class
    Stephanie H.

Zingerman's BAKE had one of the best cooking/baking classes I've ever taken. I did a course on making Danishes that was a great experience. The instructors were knowledgeable and helpful, and every part of the experience was well-timed and thought out. Danishes require a laminated dough which is hard to pull off in 4 hours. So, over the course of the class we: made our own butter block and dough; shaped and filled dough that BAKE staff had made the day before; laminated our dough; egg washed and prepared the shaped danishes for baking; tasted the baked pastries. At the end of the class, we received 18 baked danishes, our laminated dough and filling (enough to make 18 more), and recipes for the dough and fillings. The class was tons of fun and educational, and with all the danishes we got to take home I definitely felt like we got the value out of the price. Highly recommend taking a class along with a friend or family member!

Reasonably priced at $45 a session and conveniently located in the spacious kitchen of the Westminster Presbyterian Church on Scio Church Road, Sprouting Chefs offers attendees the chance to make new and theme based meals in a safe, fun and supportive environment. Throughout the 2 1/2 hour class, Lilian and an assistant provided supervision and instruction to the students, as they moved through all of the steps to make three age appropriate, yet creative menu items. In the class my daughter attended, they made a cucumber salad, homemade Southern-style macaroni and cheese, and mixed berry shortcakes with lemon curd. Completely at ease with the children, Lilian infused the class with instruction on technique, such as how to properly hold a knife; kitchen rules, such as to always say "behind" when you are coming behind someone with boiling water or a hot pan; and nutrition information, such as information on the differences between organic, locally grown and conventional produce. At the end of the class, which included a generous tasting of all the dishes, my daughter and her friends left with a take home bag of the dishes they had prepared and a recipe booklet so that they could make the recipes at home with their families. The girls had a wonderful time and I would highly recommend the class to other children and teens who enjoy and want to learn more about cooking.

Instead, the kitchen was quiet and had a nervous energy, with none of the guests knowing where they were supposed to step in to help. Guests can expect to stand at their own station for five-plus hours in what is essentially a stress position and wait until one onion or chicken breast is passed between the 12 or so attendees to chop. Not only is this extremely dull, it resulted in our soup being over-seasoned and opened everyone in the class up to the mistake of an individual. One of Chef Denene's friends was in attendance and for some reason she largely only interacted with them, talking to them at a volume where no one else could hear and tasking them with the few opportunities available to actually cook, apart from my group there were many individuals in the class who came alone and were not engaged with or made to feel included by the Chef, who had the same attitude as a teacher who doesn't care your group project and is stressed out by being unprepared. If guests had difficulty cooking they were not given help, instead the chef would step in and do it herself. The bulk of the feedback we received was from Chef Denene reminding us which sink to wash our hands in, where to toss aprons, to wash dishes, and other trivial things that made our group feel more like free labor than students. This lasted from 10-1pm, upon which we enjoyed our soup and rellenos. The later was tasty but the soup was inedible by two in our group who thought it was too spicy as a result of the seasonings being measured by random class patrons who were receiving instruction secondhand. Our group left after this, not confident that the next four hours would be more interactive or than the end product would be tasty enough to make staying worth it. Rather than a class, this is more like a chef's tasting that you watch be made. If you do not know how to chop an onion you may learn something, but all in all the majority of recipes were not taught in anyway where you could feel confident in re-creating them at home, which was my hope. One would be better served spending their money either going to a nice restaurant or taking a class through an educational institution where the instructor has an interest in being a facilitator. I'd like to think that this was an off-day and would be interested in taking a different class if the Chef would explain her reasoning for the class structure. TL:DR: Not a cooking class in the way that you're thinking, vibes are off and at times rude.

Unlike some cooking classes that only allow for you to watch how the food is made, classes at Le Chat allow you the opportunity to be fully immersed in the cooking experience with the other classmates. Chef Denene does a spectacular job of teaching the class and demonstrating techniques that make cooking easier and more enjoyable. She can tell when people may be struggling with a certain task and she knows how to teach them how to perform that task more efficiently. From tasks as simple as how to properly dice green onions, to learning how to make a five star creme brûlée, Chef Denene is a true professional, minus the arrogant flare that can be seen in the "superstar chefs". With classes such as the recent San Francisco Chop House, complete with an appetizer of white cheddar crab dip with toasted artisan bread and a main course of bacon wrapped filets with sour cream chive mashed potatoes and fresh popovers with parmesan butter, it's difficult to not want to come back every week! And when dessert consists of freshly made orange-glazed doughnut holes served with a mocha latte toffee crunch sauce, it's easy to reconsider your career and want to go to culinary school. Needless to say, the two hour drive to get there is well worth it. The facebook page has great information and pictures as well. Chef Denene, thank you thank you thank you for another amazing experience and I look forward to returning soon.
