Ok, this is a hidden gem! What is mostly a donut pastry shop has a hidden secret! Pretzels! The ham and cheeses stuffed pretzel is an incredible treat! I also picked up a couple of pretzel sticks. The first bite fills your mouth with the best fresh pretzel taste I've had. Forget auntie Anne's and those kiosk style pretzels. This is the real deal. Service was friendly and fast.

I love this place and make it a point to visit everytime I come home! I got 6 donuts for $9.50. Apple fritters always costs a little more though. Service is fast and you're always in and out. This year they are on break from Jan 1-17. We always get: - glazed donut - chocolate glaze - apple fritter - chocolate - pumpkin

Fantastic affordable family run bakery. This bakery was recommended by a friend and I've gone back every week since she told me. The staff are friendly and the offerings are great. Parking out front can be a bit tight, but people are usually in and out quickly so haven't had a real problem. I first had a bear claw and cream filled long John and today I went for the cinnamon roll variation. Cinnamon Pastry: It's not bad. Definitely prefer a risen product. But good if you want more of a croissant feel. Cinnamon Roll: I was amazed how good this thing tasted for the price point. Let's just say that I went to a certain famous local brand's bakery and would recommend this shop over that! The texture of the roll was very light and melts in your mouth.

    Custard Paczki Cut in Half

Apparently I wasn't sick of paczki yet after eating a ton of them from three bakeries over the pre-paczki day weekend. On paczki day, I decided to try another two bakeries, and DJ's Bakery was the most recommended in Ann Arbor. I stopped by prior to lunch and there was a line 7 or 8 parties deep. It went really quickly though, maybe less than 5 minutes to the front - they are super efficient with getting everything packed up and ready to go. I already had way too many paczki the past couple of days so I only picked up two: Custard Paczki ($2.50) - The first thing I noticed were just how large and heavy these were. My best guess is that these are something like 50% bigger than everyone else. When I picked them up, I could feel that they slightly warm to the touch, a very promising sign that these were very fresh. As I bit into the pastry, I noticed that the color of the dough was a pretty stark yellow, indicating just how rich the dough is with egg yolks. The texture was similar to really rich brioche, much denser than a normal yeast donut, with a very nice chewiness that was chewy but lighter on the teeth than a developed bread dough. The filling they use is a pretty standard custard and the top of the paczki is dipped in chocolate. Overall this was a delicious pastry. Cream Paczki ($2.50) - Again, the dough was every bit as fantastic as the custard paczki. The filling was the only difference, and this I thought was very good. The cream was smooth, sweet, and had a rich taste. Delicious. The paczki here are the largest and cheapest (by 75 cents) of the 5 places I visited. This was also the only bakery where I regretted not buying more. DJ's is my #1 pick so far for paczki considering both cost and deliciousness. Edit: I actually enjoyed DJ's so much that I went back during the weekend to try out their normal donuts, this time to compare against two of the other highest recommended donut places in/near Ann Arbor. We decided to get the classic glazed and a cream long john from each place to compare. Glazed Donut ($1.65) - This donut looked the tallest of the three glazed yeast donuts but it kind of caved in as I ate. The holes in the dough are way larger making this very fluffy and airy. The center hole almost closes in on itself due to how much it puffs out. The donut is soft and very compressible and is the most uniform looking donut, big, with both sides looking almost perfect. The donut is fried well and has a nice golden brown color on both sides, with the requisite strip of lighter colored dough in the middle. The glaze adheres pretty well, but also has portions that flake off. Cream Long John ($2.25) - This is the only one of the three without chocolate ganache on top. Instead of being filled from piping into a hole, this one is cut in half and filled with cream. The cream is by far the smoothest cream of the three and has the most pleasant mouthfeel. The exterior tastes of fried dough without much sugar. Overall, it's not as sweet as the long johns from the other bakeries. Again, the donuts here are superb and my favorite of the three bakeries I visited. DJ's is the place I will return to when I'm in Ann Arbor and in a donut mood.

Clean, simple Bakery featuring classic donuts and pastries + some seasonal favs. Usually busy but the staff moves super fast! This place has my vote for top five best apple fritters!

    Apple fritters

The apple fritters are dangerously amazing. It has crispy edges and is soft and fluffy on the inside. I love the small chunks of apple inside. I came in the afternoon and they still tasted so fresh. It paired well with an iced Vietnamese coffee, which was sweet and delicious. The space is casual and has some inside and outside seating.

The BEST donuts in all of Ann Arbor, hands down! The donuts are fresh, fluffy, and delicious! I visited Ann Arbor recently for a work trip, and stopped by DJ's because of the stellar reviews. The woman at the counter was so sweet and had the biggest smile on her face when I walked in! The assortment of donuts was vast - I couldn't decide, so I opted for a dozen. After picking them out, I was floored by the price - $20 and some of them were specialty donuts!!! Incredibly reasonably priced!! I took them home with me to Detroit, and my family agreed they were amazing. The donuts stayed fresh for two whole days - unheard of! I wish I could have stayed to have coffee, but I was already late for a meeting. However, the atmosphere was very warm and inviting. I'll have to take my family next time I'm in the area!

I saw an ad for a Grain Latte (mi-su-ga-ru) and was so curious how it would taste. I haven't noticed it anywhere else (other Korean bakeries), so had to make a trip just for the drink, along with their other goodies. Omg, from the first sip, I was transported back to my childhood. I used to drink the multigrain drink that would come in powder form. But this drink was elevated by the espresso. What a perfect combo! Now this latte isn't sweet, so if you are looking for sweet, this won't be the drink for you. I had my hubs try it out and said he could taste espresso with an aftertaste of the grains- not something he would order, himself. But I'm definitely going to! He ordered the pistachio latte and I could tell it's very different from other ps's I've had from Monday Coffee Club or from Yemeni coffee houses. It definitely has that light, Korean, nutty taste that isn't strong. The baked goodie, I'm happy to say, has expanded and they offer so much more than they did since my last review. They've added a few nice tables and chairs, so you don't have to leave to enjoy your pastries or coffee, unless there's no spots. Highly recommend Y if you enjoy desserts that's not too sweet.
