The Chelsea bakery may be the best doughnuts in Washtenaw county. They make the classics flavors everyday fresh. Their muffins are perfect as well. My son remarked at how good it was when he ate it faster than I could ask to taste it. But I can say that the doughnuts were exemplary. We tried them all at home, perfect. Custard long John, they also sell out of the ham and cheese croissants. They are amazing for a lunch. Smaller size place excellent fast service. It was a few minutes before they closed so it was a little rushed. We ordered a variety of donuts including a cinnamon roll, cream filled, old fashioned and pumpkin spice. The pumpkin spice was sharp and tangy. The vanilla cream was carefully filled. The old fashioned was a classic cake donut. The cinnamon rolls were large enough to split between multiple people. While not as well known as bakeries in nearby Ann Arbor, Chelsea Bakery is worth a visit if you're in the neighborhood (or a road trip if you're not.) they have a plethora of delicious pastries. The filled ones have been my favorite here, especially the raspberry. The bear claw is amazing. If you plan on stopping by on a busy day, such as Fat Tuesday, plan ahead or get there early. They get pretty busy but it's well worth it! They also have Vietnamese coffee, a weak-in-the-knees favorite of mine, and it's quite good. read more

I have to admit that after having eaten some glorious meals more than several times at the Common Grill, I was unprepared when we parked along the curb in from of the restaurant this morning and walked across the street to what turned out to be a wildly unexceptional bakery. The bakery's storefront gave a strong, unambiguous message about what we didn't find inside. The interior was drab and rather low rent, with a few tables and chairs. While the prices for the cookies (60 cents each) and pastries (ranging from $1 - 2 each) were reasonable, the selection, even though it was mid morning, was minimal, and the cookies and pastries were only tepid imitations of what a good bakery could produce. I had several chocolate chip cookies and a chocolate long john, the latter filled with a yellow custard. All were disappointing. The iconic Tollhouse recipe has made it difficult for even a mediocre home baker to mess up chocolate chip cookies. But these cookies made us cry. I think that if you don't particularly care what the combination of white flour, white sugar, butter, and chocolate produces, then this is the kind of unimaginative cookie you could make. My girl sampled other cookies and pastries, but finished none. We saw no cakes displayed, but a price list was available. The bathroom was clean. So, in summary, a hole in the wall for people who don't know what good bakeries can actually do. read more

Friendly service, slightly overcooked donuts. Every employee I've met here is very friendly (and good with kids) --- but it's a little off-putting that usually only two or three trays will be filled in a case that holds ~15. Most of the donuts I've tried have been reasonable, but overly crunchy. Never stale-dry, but definitely overcooked-dry. Chocolate glaze, sprinkles (note kid reference earlier), and a cinnamon roll were all similar. I'll try the bowties or raised-glazed next time... but the smiles might beat the donuts here. read more

Since I am not a regular, I don't know what their typical prices and deals are for bulk purchases. The woman behind the counter this morning was pretty rude to me when I asked questions about this. There was a lot of attitude and some aggressive tone in her demeanor. Even though I was the only customer in the store, she was hurrying me through the process, which only added insult to injury. Word of advice: when a customer asks questions (especially if they are not a regular) maybe exercise a little patience and implement some basic customer service? When I saw the option for a tip, I laughed internally. What a joke. Wish there was another bakery in Chelsea that I could go to instead for donuts. What a lovely little Bakery with the most delightful owner! Not only were her baked goods and pastries delicious but I found out in conversation that she lived in San Diego for 14 years so we could talk San Diego/Ocean Beach talk and it turned out her husband's relative owns the OB Donuts. I have been there when I was in that neighborhood. I'm very picky about cream filled Donuts and prefer white cream filling over custard filling but I don't like a filling that is too sweet. She had only one cream filled donut left so I bought it and it was perfect! She also gave me a tip on a bakery in San Diego I should give a try to. Pecan Cinnamon rolls are amazing! I am so glad this bakery opened up on Main street. Not too dry, but done baked goods. Cinnamon anything is fabulous and the staff is super fast. They accept cc and have a small seating area and drink cooler with appropriate options. Get there early to make sure your favorites are available. Wonderful, wonderful and just plain wonderful! Their product is homemade and fresh. The couple who run this bakery pour their hearts into serving top-notch delights. My family and neighbors gobbled the box of apple fritters, chocolate dipped donuts, and blueberry muffins within 30 mins. (think: big box stuffed with fresh goodness!) Moving from the East Coast I haven't been impressed with what Michigan has had to offer as far as restaurants and bakeries but this one hit the mark and I will gladly drive the 30 mins to stand in line. Look no further for delicious doughnuts! I've been here several times and it's been packed with customers each time. Don't worry about waiting in line long though, the employees (owners?) work at high speed and the line moves quickly. They offer the standards (plain, glazed, jelly, sourdough, sprinkles, etc...) and the fancies (bear claws, fritters, eclairs, etc...) along with a bread selection (pretzel sticks, rolls- try the roll stuffed with ham & cheese, ask to have it heated so the cheese melts). Beverages are limited to bottled items in the cooler and seating is limited but everything is clean (including the bathrooms). Overall, well worth the trip! read more

I've been here at least three times since the bakery has opened, and I must say I am relatively impressed. The overall establishment is clean, and looks well kept. Some seating is available, but not much beyond that. The store itself is rather quaint, but there is still plenty of room for it to feel comfortable. The display cases did appear to be about half stocked on each visit, but it was also later in the day when I arrived, however, and this really has no bearing on the actual rating. The staff has also been consistently friendly with each visit, which is always an important factor. My only major complaint is the parking. Since the location is right on Main Street, there are only a few parking spaces right by the bakery. There is a parking lot behind the strip, however, if nothing is available out front...this lot can be a little confusing to get in and out of if you aren't from town/familiar with it, and it may be hard for some visitors to find. And most important...the donuts! Chocolate-glazed cake donuts are my favorite, and I am quite impressed with Chelsea Bakery's. Very fresh, and moist- even the sprinkles (I like my sprinkles)! Everyone in my company also agreed that their donuts were wonderful as well (especially the apple fritters). Pricing is also quite reasonable. I believe most of the regular types of donuts are less than a dollar. Quite fair if you ask me. In summary: Cute downtown bakery, reasonable pricing, minimal parking, but totally worth it for the quality of treats received. read more

Visited because a local shop owner made a recommendation. It was amazing! We were t ok d to go early as they sell out on the weekend and sure enough they only had pretzels with cheese in center so we got two of the last five. They were SO GOOD!!! The coffee was a different type of bean and we tried both hot and cold. Again, did not disappoint!! We ended up getting the last pretzel and more coffee to go. Not fancy and The coffee is pretty ordinary. But the donuts.....omg....the donuts! the donuts are pretty much as good as donuts get. A classic, mom & pop local donut shop. One of my very favorites anywhere. BTW. The lady behind the counter (a really sweet asian lady) and her husband own the shop. The husband works over night to make the donuts and the lady shows up very early to sell them. They do not use preservatives so, the donuts and muffins will not store well-they make a limited quantity because they do not want to have to throw any out. But...this makes them really good. I have been away from this area for awhile and I had the donuts at the Chelsea Bakery. Two years ago, they were very fresh and not stale. The chocolate glazed donut I had today was stale and not tasty at all. It didn't hit me as being as good as the ones I had two years ago when they first opened and had taken over a upscale cake/cupcake shop. I guess the donuts are better in the morning. One thing that disturbed me was that a saleswoman came into this bakery while I was sitting at a table. She told the owner (a short Asian-American woman) that she was with Aflac and could she speak to the owner. The owner did not even get up and speak to her politely and blatantly lied and informed this saleswoman the owner was not there and that the bakery would not be interested in Aflac. I thought this behavior was rude and badly reflected on herself and her business. I also felt the owner brushed off this saleswoman because her race. I went outside and told the saleswoman that was the owner and she lied outright. I will never come back to this business and I suggest you give it a miss! read more
