Well this is embarrassing. It took a friend visiting from out of town to learn that Bird Dog Baking…read morehad a permanent home on a prominent corner of Ypsi... for years. Even worse, it's amazing. And I'm not one to gush over bakeries. And this bakery does it all. Naturally leavened breads, sweet pastries, savory baked goods, and great coffee all in a clean, well lit, charming, and friendly space. While I have had BDB's rye teacake at Argus in the past, I had not delved deeply into their full line of products. This changed last week when I popped in and fell in love with their buckwheat financier, spelt scone with braised collards, cheddar, and bacon, and their Ypsi sour loaf. Here's the bottom line: the flavors and textures are just freaking fabulous. Across the board. Financiers, scones, and bread all share the same praise. Remarkable crunchy crusts, juxtaposed with tender interiors, and flavor that just goes on and on. Brand new fan. Well worth the drive out to Ypsi. I think I found my new favorite hangout with those big big windows, easy weekday parking, and free wifi. My hope is to get there early enough sometime to get a hot baguette out of the oven, or some other loaf when it is still warm. Hot bread and good butter is the best food combination on Earth. I'm ready to throw down in defense of those words. I suspect when I get that timing figured out, Bird Dog Baking might be able to squeeze its way into the top spot of my greatest culinary experience of all time. But I'm a simple man, with simple tastes... even if I have almost impossibly high standards. Oh yeah, they also are seriously into local grains, using a wide variety of lesser known grains, and all kinds of other super cool and nerdy food stuff. But you don't have to know any of that to fall in love with the spot and the culinary team behind it. Just go, eat, and enjoy.

It is a little difficult to find - it's just off Washington St and can be accessed via a larger paid parking lot (free on Sundays though). It's a small place inside with seating for maybe 7-10 patrons. We opted to take ours to go but there were a few people eating inside! Service was really friendly. They have a small menu but to me, that just means they focus on doing those things right. A few sweet and a few savory options and some coffee drinks as well. We ordered the bacon, egg, and cheese biscuit sandwich and the vegan focaccia sandwich (both with hot sauce on the side). The hot sauce was really good and actually spicy! My husband enjoyed his biscuit sandwich, saying flavor was good and the biscuit held up well and did not fall apart. My vegan focaccia sandwich (roasted broccolini with almond romesco, turmeric pickled zucchini and fresh greens) was delicious. Everything was crisp and flavored so well and the focaccia was fresh. The sandwich was messy but totally worth it - and huge. Definitely recommend. Thank you so much, Beara!

Service is very fast…read more After 8 years of hearing about Dom's, I finally got to try it and I have to admit, these are the best apple fritters and donuts I've ever had. Even more impressive, my husband said the apple fritters haven't changed and taste exactly how he remembers it from undergrad. We just went in for some apple fritters but left with a giant box: 3 apple fritters, 2 glazed donuts, 2 cider donuts with cinnamon sugar, and 2 eclairs with custard filling. Those apple fritters were massive and heavy! We split one with a black coffee and it was amazing. Then, we split a glazed donut. Generally, as far as donuts go, my all time fav is a plain glazed. This was the best apple fritter and glazed donut I've ever had! Actually! We shared the rest of the box with our family and grazed on them throughout the weekend. Definitely worth going out of your way to pop in for a sweet treat if you're in Ypsilanti, or the Ann Arbor/Detroit area.

We got a blueberry pie (freshly baked), an apple strudel and half a poppy seed strudel (both frozen). You can get the strudels either freshly baked or frozen to bake later; same with the pies, I suspect. The pie and apple strudel are the absolute best I've ever had, and I grew up with a grandma who made these desserts! The poppy seed strudel was also very good, but it has raisins, which is traditional, but I personally don't like very much. The apple strudel does not have raisins - yay! Gretchen does heritage baking, hence the desserts are not overly sweet, which I really appreciated. They are perfect!

They ran out of the Maple glazed when I came so I got the Bear Claw, Apple Fritter, and decided to try their Cinnamon Roll that was more flaky. Everything tasted fantastic and that flaky Cinnamon Roll had a great sweet and buttery flavor!! I still prefer the glazed but it was good!
