The only issue we had was that our food took forever! We waited for over 50 minutes and then finally asked our server for our food and she said the food is delayed because you ordered poached eggs and those take time. Over 45 minutes? For poached eggs? It was confusing because if that was the case we would've ordered a different style of eggs if we were told. I finally did have to change my eggs and asked for fried eggs and they brought the food out after that. We were entertaining guests and raved about wishbone, our guests ended up being hangry! Actually it was one of our guests who went and complained to the manager. I could understand if some other dishes take longer to make but it was the poached eggs that held us up? Absolutely some of the best southern/Cajun food in Chicago. It seems like they had a few difficult years during Covid, but we hung with them and now the place is humming and it looks like they're expanding their hours. If you get a chance, go for the Happy Hour specials on Friday, it a condensed menu with smaller portions, but it is fantastic! Brunch is fantastic too, and it is so difficult to choose from the great menu offerings, but you'll never go away hungry from this place. Great food, great drinks, great staff and great owners. They do not offer any handicapped entrance. They have a door that would be used with a handicap button, but this door is locked and on it is a sign that says "Please use revolving door". When visiting Chicago, my friend suggested we go to Wishbone. I was like "I'm from Texas, why would I want to order Southern Food in Chicago?" Boy was I wrong. This place is awesome. I had the blackened chicken with Collard Greens and Spinach. Man oh man it was so good. So I walk in and the place is really clean. I walk to the restroom to wash my hands and the restroom is not only clean, it smells clean. I walk back to my table and I'm greeted by a waitress that's passing by. I get to my table and we order. After ordering and me expressing my doubt, the food comes fast and smells delicious. I dug into my bowl of greens first, and immediately wished I had another bowl... wow they were so good... The chicken was seasoned and cooked to perfection. This place has great service, great food and is in an area that from what I understand is pretty fun at night. Sometimes restaurant experiences can last as long as a full meal or can be as short as a single to-go order. In my opinion, neither is greater than the other and both ought to be treated with the same importance as the other. Even though I ordered one item to-go, that food item should've been the same quality as one ordered in the restaurant. But this was NOT the case. I entered and ordered from Wishbone on a little whim to have a bit of a meal before work. I saw from the menu posted on the window that there were "Homefries." Fries are usually what I order from any typical restaurant as a small pick-me-up without spending to much money. That was what I ordered from the host stand as soon I entered, with a special request for it to be seasoned with black pepper as well. The hostess ensured me that the order already comes seasoned with salt and pepper. From a quick look around, the restaurant was moderately seated; not busy and not empty either. I assumed I wouldn't have to wait too long for my order. And while that much was true, it was also SUSPICIOUSLY speedy. Not two minutes right after I receiving and signing my receipt, the hostess returns from the kitchen with the fries. After I left and I opened the to-go box, I was met with an utter disappointment of potatoes. It wasn't the fact that I initially thought the potatoes were of the matchstick shape when you normally think of "fries." The BIGGEST PROBLEM was the quality of something that can be so easily cooked and prepared, yet even that failed to meet the absolute lowest expectations of fried potatoes. The "fries" are instead just hash and grilled onions. Moreover, I could tell easily by its texture that it was old, most likely pre-fried, and probably sitting around for a while. It was not crispy, not hot, and MOST IMPORTANTLY NOT SEASONED. The biggest crime to ANY fried potato dish is to not find any ounce of seasoning whatsoever--especially when you requested it to be. I literally could not find one speck, one grain, ONE MINUSCULE GRANULE OF SALT NOR PEPPER NOR ANYTHING. My suspicions were all but confirmed. Whatever cook or chef that made that order probably didn't give any second thought to the quality of my fries that afternoon, and I think it's saddening that the standards for something as simple as fries couldn't have been accomplished by a kitchen that's been operating for so long. Now, if whoever is reading this has made it this far into my long winded review of an order of to-go fries, I'd want them to know that I'm PETTY but that is NOT WITHOUT keen observation and appreciation of the restaurant culture here in Chicago. As I'm closing this review, I see that someone else has claimed Wishbone's food as "soul healing." From these initial impressions and Wishbone's seemingly lack of care of my food, I'd beg to differ. read more

We typically only go to Wishbone when my parents are in town, and the service and food are always great. That being said, if you're not in a Southern comfort mood, there won't be a lot of options for you on the menu. We went during a slow day, so it slowed her to be attentive but there weren't very many staff there. There were so many options and everything sounded good. I ended up getting the shrimp and grits which were so so so good. Now, it wasn't made the traditional way. They had a creamed sauce that the shrimps and grits were in, I believe mushroom based. Whatever it was, it was a nice twist. It came with a side so I got greens. My family had the salmon cakes, greens and red beans and rice. I tried hers and it was delicious. I have such great memories of Wishbone when I lived and worked in the west loop. Tonight, I stopped by for dinner before a show. I couldn't be happier that I remembered how great the food is here! A few friends and I came here for Sunday brunch. There's a nice outdoor seating area that's perfect for brunch; you can bring your dog friends to brunch if you wish. Located in a cute neighborhood in Chicago, I really enjoyed the southern cuisine of Wishbone. This was the family's first time to Chicago and I enjoyed coming outside of the downtown area. Wishbone boasts on its southern menu and I see why they've been named a favorite in Chicago. I wish there was more on my plate, because those two cakes disappeared rather quickly Hubby's entree: blackened chicken. He said he wasn't excited about it. He mentioned it wasn't terrible but the chicken was dry. Children were satisfied for the most part. My son enjoyed his buckwheat pancakes and it filled him up. Daughter had the strawberry pancakes. When I turned 50 I decided that catering meals like Thanksgiving and Christmas would be the way to go. Since that time I have been trying different places and trying to find it. My boyfriend and I stopped in for lunch today. We waited until AFTER the lunch rush--about 1:30pm on a Wednesday. We were able to sit down right away and had a very nice server. No pulled pork today. It took a LONG time to get our food. Not sure why since the restaurant was not busy. The food arrived hot, which was a bonus. The portion size on the chicken was pretty small but it tasted good and was very juice. The brisket was just okay. I don't think I would order it again. Maybe it was the way it was sliced, but it really reminded me of gyro meat. The sides. The cornbread muffin was good. The collard greens were bland and missing seasoning. The kale salad was the BEST though. I am going to have to try to recreate that at home. The mac and cheese was rather bland as well and we had to doctor it up with some hot sauce. I came here for brunch and would best describe this place as your traditional brunch spot but with a southern flair. It makes for really interesting dishes like breakfast andouille sausage and a variety of omelettes. Speaking of interesting, what I will remember most about this place was the interior decor and how unique it is. While I was waiting for the food, I found myself gazing up at the giant mural of flying animals. There's also various paintings around the restaurant of abstract animal art, which was really intriguing. I ordered the red eggs for brunch, which was extremely tasty. I would make a few modifications to it, but let me explain the dish. It comes with two eggs any style (our waiter recommended scrambled or over easy) that is under a bed of melted cheese and sour cream. There's also a salsa that comes with it too, but since I'm not a fan of spicy I asked for it on the side (although they insisted it wasn't going to be spicy, I was still skeptical to try it). To the side of the egg/cheese mix is a heaping amount of red beans. While everything was very tasty and flavorful, here are the changes I would make. There were far too many beans on the plate and a lot went to waste. I would also suggest moving the sour cream to the side of the plate as a dipping sauce, that way the flavor of the egg/cheese mix isn't lost in large amounts of sour cream. I am heartbroken that the Lakeview location closed down, so I had to make the trek to the west loop. Worth it as usual! The atmosphere is boisterous and friendly. It's always difficult to choose what to order- I miss the hush puppies of the Lakeview location! My go tos are the Cajun shrimp and grits, the blackened catfish, the corned beef hash and the brisket hash. I love how the bloody Mary's have a seafoody taste. The menu is so good all around it's hard to have a regular order! Love the vaulted ceilings and the farm animal murals all around. It gives the space a unique feel. I like to see business booming, good sign of good food. We got seated at a cozzy corner table near a window and surprisingly it wasn't cold. I had the pleasure of dining with my friend and his Mama while she was in town at what I'd consider to be some great Southern comfort food, depending on what you get! Be sure to get more during your meal if you have a hankering for it. Next came the Crawfish CakeS... the name is misleading because you only really got a small piece for $6. It had some good flavor to it, but just wished it was hotter and bigger considering how hungry we were. Our food came shortly after and we were greeted with a massive piece of fried catfish. The fish was very good and the batter was crunchy! The size made up for the appetizer, but I wish the batter was more infused with the fish itself. It felt very separate from the catfish, but who am I to complain? It was still good. My sides were the cheese grits and mashed sweet potatoes, both of which were good in itself. For dessert, we ordered the peach cobbler (bomb!) and the Strawberry key lime pie, which was literally a shaved strawberry on top of a slice of pie. While not the most original, it was still good and filling. Wishbone has got its formula down, no complaints there.
