Beauty's has absolutely gone to trash. Ever since they were bought and stopped doing wood fired bagels, their bagels are just chewy bread. The salmon quality for lox is not as good. I tried the apricot rugelach today and it was inedible. The apricot filling had no flavor and the dough was basically raw, oily goo. Their "latkes" are molded pucks of smashed potato, more akin to German potato pancakes -- which is not the same as a latke. I parked and paid the meter, got in line and had about 20 people ahead of me, ordered 2 bagels to go and a black coffee, waited at the counter and enjoyed my coffee, bagels were ready in 5-7 minutes, snapped a bunch of pictures, ate half of each bagel while it was still fresh, and saved the other half for later. The bagels: Classic $8.75: Smoked salmon, cream cheese, red onion & capers, served closed-1.5 ounce - this was my favorite. It had the perfect ratio of salmon and ingredients and left me wanting more. For the price, I liked this bagel much better than Russ & Daughters in NYC. Organic fried chicken $11: Creamy beet coleslaw - good but I wished the chicken was more moist and tender with a little less batter. I'll definitely be back for the classic bagel. read more

One day (probably on my deathbed to be honest), I will let go of my New York City-related bagel snobbery. Until then, I've been and will remain notoriously picky about West Coast bagels. Yet, Beauty's has become one of my local bagel favorites since moving to the East Bay. Do they have the same texture and flavor that I go used to growing up in Brooklyn? Not exactly, but I'm not sure you could ever find an exact match for certain Northeast bagels. Everything from water type to boiling/baking techniques will influence bagel quality, but I think Beauty's does a great job of making their bagels crusty outside with a chewy interior. I've had some of their bagels "to go" and thought they held up well (with their in-house cream cheese) even after a few days from their baking date. I've tried their breakfast bagel sandwiches a few times and thought there were tasty if possibly a bit too pricey for me to get on the regular. I imagine that the price is on the higher side due to the quality of the ingredients, and I thought my most recent sandwich was well-constructed with a gooey yet measured quantity of cheese, fluffy eggs, and crispy bacon. I liked the chicken sausage when I had it in the past, but thought it was sweeter than I would have liked. There's definitely a reason the weekend breakfast/brunch lines are usually on the longer side, so you should definitely give Beauty's a try! read more

Oooh nothing portrays the beauty of adulting more than enjoying artisan processed goods in cute little shops! The Bagels and delicious coffee at Beauty's makes this one of my favorite places to pick up and go to brunch. It is pricey but the bagels are so filling that I'd doubt you'd want more to eat for the day - especially if you get the open faced classic (portions are generous), and the quality of lox and cream cheese is divine. All of the cream cheese used is sourced from a local creamery, so you can't get the combination of Montreal style bagel and fresh cheese anywhere else - I live for one-of-a kind eats, and farm-to-table fare so Beauty's is a winner in my book. If you're into latte's etc...do not pass on a Flat White here, you're welcome :) This is totally a 5 star establishment but I've given 4 because they haven't quite yet mastered the art of organized foot traffic within the shop. Delicious bagels! I'm always looking for brunch spots with good food and that don't have an hour long wait. This fits the bill. Came here on a Saturday around 12:30 pm. Parking was easy, we found a spot in front, but as an FYI these are metered spots. It was still busy, but there was no wait to order, or for a table. You order at the counter, get a number and seat yourself. They have a large selection of classic bagel sandwiches and lots of omelette sandwiches too. I went for my favorite: a lox bagel with no veggies. I also got a chai latte. The bagel was delicious and chewy. I wish it had been toasted a bit more (not sure if I even asked for it to be toasted though). A little disappointed that there wasn't a lot of lox in the sandwich - maybe one slice. The chai latte was delicious and not sweet. It tasted like real chai, and not like chai-flavored syrup which is what you get at other places. read more

It's hard to pass by Beauty's and not pick up some bagels! They put out Montréal-style bagels, which are smaller and slightly sweeter. Plenty of variation within this style if you've been to St-Viateur's or Fairmount. Sesame ones are particular good, though I'm usually an Everything guy. The smoked fish salad sandwich is my standard, but the breakfast ones are a joy. Plenty of seating inside and out. The staff seem like they love their jobs, which is reflected in the cheery service. read more

I've been to Montreal and I still dream of a warm sesame bagel I ate at St. Viateur topped with cream cheese. It was so mind blowing and chewy and delicious, that I immediately went back after finishing and ordered a second just to see, and "yes!" it really was that good. I smiled from ear to ear. I've never had anything like it since. The fact that they duplicate the Montreal recipe here at Beauty's down to the honey water bath was the selling point that got me here. Beauty's bagel shop is Berkeley-adorable, funky, fully staffed and very popular, but the sesame bagel I ate here was nothing like the bagel I ate in Le Plateau. It wasn't warm from the oven and chewy and soft-tough in a way that just cannot be believed. However, it was good. Of coarse, there are some California bagel things I like that you would absolutely never find in Montreal, like the option to have your bagel toasted, which you'll never see at St. Viateur. Just look at all the toppings you can get at Beauty's that would be a huge no-no on a bagel in Montreal: bacon (can you imagine?!) and egg. Quelle horreur! The idea of a bagel sandwich at St. Viateur's is a foreign concept, but you can call me a honorary Californian because I like a good prepped bagel sandwich and even egg on my bagel from time to time. Ultimately the sesame bagels at Beauty's are harder and not right out of the oven like they are in Montreal. I did try having their sesame bagel toasted warmed and that helped a good deal to get it closer to the chewy Montreal bagels from the source, but of coarse it fell short. I have loved this place since they opened. The bagels are indeed delicious. It's sad to say I feel really different now as I ordered online last Sunday morning - 6 all sesame bagels. I went to pick it up and didn't open the bag to check. When I got home I realized I had 6 mixed variety - and they were stale. They gave me day olds. I guess because I ordered so early in the morning? They don't answer their phone and have no contact info or email listed - I tried to reach out to them to work it out before just leaving a bad review. If you're going to give loyal customers wrong orders that's one thing- mistakes happen- but to also throw down day old bagels instead of fresh at 7 am? Super lame. Ordered a dozen assorted and 1/2 dozen sesame for pick-up the next day. Picked up order and brought it home only to find the sesame bagels missing and the ones I received were clearly whatever was leftover at the end of the shift and already fairly stale. Thinking the sesame were in a separate bag I return to the shop only to be told, they had run out of sesame and had reversed that charge. Why had no one mentioned that before or at pick-up and what's the point of pre-ordering? Had to pick up some Thomas's bagels at Safeway so I would have enough for morning party. I first visited this "shop" in 2015 on a day when they were hosting a pop-up for the new Berkeley business Augie's Montreal Deli. I totally loved the smoked meat sandwich that I snagged that day, but it sure wasn't served on a bagel. I returned to Beauty's as a first-time bagel customer earlier this month. At the moment of my visit, my temporary basecamp was the parking lot of the Sutter Health Surgery Center across the street. I scrambled across Telegraph to get myself a classic smoked salmon bagel sandwich ($13.32, including tax and tip) and was sure glad that I did. Ordering was quick and easy; moreover, the sandwich was ready a few minutes after ordering was complete. This is seemingly where all the cool young people of the East Bay come on Saturday mornings. We came in around 10:30 and it was bustling but we luckily managed to snag a table. The staff are friendly and the clientele generally relaxed. By the time we left at noon, it was packed. I ordered the classic bagel - cream cheese and salmon, and may have missed a trick - it was good but wasn't exceptional. (As a non-American, I might be less good at judging bagel quality.) The chocolate egg cream, a kind of soda cocktail, was an interesting and novel menu item (at last in my limited experience) which I had to try. We've read about Montreal Style Bagels and saw that Beauty's offered them. On a lazy Saturday where we had nothing scheduled and we needed to get out of the house, we headed over to check them out. There were a few other food places nearby but only one other was open at the time. Parking was fairly easy to get close by. There were a couple of occupied tables outside and most of the tables inside were occupied as well. It was pretty busy but the pace was very quick. We kept it simple and ordered an Original on a Plain Bagel. The bagel itself is on the smaller side and seemed to be fairly dense. The flavor was good but we didn't notice any honey flavor. Of course, the salmon, raw onion, cream cheese or capers may have had something to do with that. We'll have to drop back by when we're in the area to try other flavors. Service was quick and friendly. We ordered ours to go and stood in the wrong place and were asked to move around the corner to wait. We did so and then were constantly asked by other guests if we were in line for the restroom. Somedays, you just can't win! lol! read more

Staff was really friendly, efficient and organized, which I loved. I ordered BEC on and everything bagel and it was simply delicious. Great ingredients, fresh and warm! A perfectly hipster spot serving up perfectly hipster bagel offerings. I've been a fan of the Temescal location for years. Ordering online makes the Beauty's process particularly enjoyable. Although simple in decor and offerings, this place offers a lot of "customization" options so that you really can get just about any breakfast or lunch experience you want! I love that there are clear price breakdowns for things like the Mushroom Breakfast Sandwich, like if you add bacon (duh). Another favorite is that they offer Everything Bagels *and* WHEAT Everything Bagels. The coffee is nothing to write home about, unfortunately, but not detrimental to the rating. Street parking can be limited on weekends, but I've never spent time circling. The ambiance has that Oakland vibe that you can't find elsewhere, and the attention to detail of experience makes a difference. Quality food at a reasonable price. I love to hit Beauty's on a wknd morning around 8:30 because the bagel bins are hot and full, the staff is jammin' friendly service, and the guests the just plain happy. That's what a good restaurant is all about to me: super good food, welcoming environment and a community enjoying it all. The bagels are really good. Best I've found in the East Bay. The poppy seed bagel is just obliterated in a covering of seeds and that means you actually get a poppy flavor, not just specks wedges into you teeth. I'm partial to the salt n pepper bagel they make, too. I do think a place like H&H in NYC has better bagels, but Beauty's are Cali-fine. They serve full breakfasts and make drip and espresso coffees that are good, too. Parking can be tricky on Sundays especially as there's a huge popular church right next door. read more

We went after the lunch rush. They were quite slow. The cashier was not very friendly so it just turned the whole experience sour to begin with. Too bad, this was highly recommended by my coworker and it was just disappointing. The bagels texture was closed to the NY bagels. But they ruined one of the bagel by toasted too much and burned the bagel. My kids usually love bagels didn't like this place because "they served burned bagels". My bagel with cream cheese was under toasted (or someone forgot to toast) and the cream cheese was cold and harden, like the cold Safeway cream cheese block right out of the fridge.
