Dirty Chai Latte
Megan J.

Swung by mid day on a Sunday for a quick breakfast. Decent amount of indoor and outdoor seating, with both smaller and larger grouped tables. You can self order on a tablet which is nice for those who already know what to order instead of having to wait in line as it'll speed up the process. I went for a non cut, everything lox bagel, minus the capers however, was missed by the staff. I received a cut bagel, with capers. Minor misses but definitely didn't impress me. I appreciated the fact that you could choose to not, lightly toast, or over toast the bagel which at the very least during my visit, was met. The dirty chai latte was really just ok. It was served at a warm-- ready to drink temperature which might not be ideal for those who enjoy drinks hot. My fiancé enjoyed his breakfast burrito but thought it was quite laughable at the amount of avocado in it. We both agreed that it was not worth $46 and wouldn't be bookmarking Wise Sons.

Closed classic on an everything bagel

Coming in close to opening on a Saturday resulted in no lines, which is always a welcome surprise, especially given some of the reviews here talking about the line. There is plenty of indoor and outdoor seating. Parking can be a little hard to find, but there is plenty of street parking around within walking distance. There is plenty of indoor seating and a few tables and chairs outside. The service was incredibly friendly. Took a few moments for my closed classic on an everything bagel, but it was worth the wait. The classic is the smoked salmon with capers, red onion, and plain shmear. Overall, very balanced for a classic bagel and lox. It was a good amount of smoked salmon, maybe a bit too many capers (but those are easy to take off so I didn't mind), and the onion wasn't too overpowering. The bagel wasn't the most ideal, had a bit more of a chew to get through the crust, but the inside was fluffy and worked with the fillings. Price is up there, but for the bay area it's not too surprising. Overall, solid bagel place in Oakland. If I have a craving I now have a place to stop by!

Oakland Wise Sins Deli Pastrami UNEDIBLE sandwich

Hugely disappointed in the pastrami sandwich on rye from the Oakland Store. I only went there because there was a Big Event in SF making my travel there way too long. This sandwich was nearly inedible due to being Full of FAT and they included the BURNT parts in the sandwich. This was the most disgusting excuse for a pastrami sandwich. Why? How? Could SF store be A MILLION times BETTER???

I miss Beauty's Bagels & all of their vegan options!!!! Also, their portion size to price ratio was significantly better. BUT this is a review about Wise Sons, so back to that... My husband & I stopped in here after an appointment to grab some yummy breakfast bagels. They had a fair amount of basic bagel choices, & a pretty good list of sandwiches to choose from. I swear the decor was basically the same as the prior shop, & the staff were just as friendly. I ordered the Bodega on Bialy, & and thought it was okay. The cheese tasted like Craft Singles, which definitely isn't a favorite of mine, & the bialy barely had any seeds or seasonings on it. Maybe I'm spoiled by my local bagel shops, who put a ton more stuff on their bialy bagels. My husband got the Crunchy Spice on an everything bagel, add avocado, & I was definitely eyeing his the whole time. He said it was tasty, just a little on the small side (& I'd have to agree!). For the two bagels alone, it was over $20... If in the area & no where else to go, we would probably come back, because the food was decent, but the price is just a bit much for the amount of food you get.

House Special with an Iced Coffee and an Everything Bagel with Scallion Spread
Brianna H.

Great food, ambience, and service! This place appeared as a top spot in my search for breakfast foods, and they did not disappoint! Between two people, we shared the house special (with pastrami and an iced coffee) and an everything bagel with scallion cream cheese. Our meal came out to $36 and we were satisfied with the amount of food! I also appreciated that the coffee bar has oat milk and self-serve water. I look forward to visiting this place again next time I'm back in town!

We're visiting from LA and had to swing by. I so wish Wise Sons was still in LA (please come back!). Still unbelievably consistent and delicious. We tried Boichik yesterday and it was not good...I'm stunned it has higher ratings than WS. Can't wait to come back to Wise Sons soon. Crunchy spicy bagel is legit.

I wanted a good breakfast and ended up getting an AMAZING breakfast! Came here with my friends and it was our first time. The place is open and spacious, family photos on the walls, and lots of delicious fresh bagels stacked at the front near checkout. The staff were really sweet and helpful. The menu was easy to read and there were many food options. I ordered the Crunchy Spice with pastrami added on the special bagel with onions baked in. (I don't remember the name) So delicious!! I must note that I'm not a bagel eater because I usually feel weird and sluggish after. But this was perfect! My tummy felt great and I still had energy for the day! I would have given 5 stars but I was saddened by the small sliver of pastrami I received. They asked if I wanted it cut like bacon but I wasn't expecting a single piece, especially when I paid extra.

I came here to meet a friend who was in town for only a few days. We both wanted to bagels and she recommended this spot. We both ordered the same thing. And everything bagel classic smoked salmon, closed. I love and everything bagel and I am a cream cheese thot! We also ordered a mocha coffee. I am forgetting the person who helped us (dyed green hair) but she was very friendly and funny. Made sure to answer my ridiculous questions about the coffee. The food came out quickly. I did enjoy the bagel. It hit the spot for me. Next time I may just get a toaster bagel with cream cheese bc that's usually what I crave. No frills, all love for the schmear. The mocha coffee was ok. Though it wasn't sweet (which I wanted) it did not taste like coffee. If I ordered that again I'd add 2 shots of espresso to that. We ate indoors, enjoy the artwork on the wall, and caught up. Though they do have some outdoor seating as well. I'll definitely give this place a try again in the future.

Excellent service, girl at the counter was so patient and explained my options when I needed time to explore the menu. Price was affordable in comparison to other places. Very well staffed, saw many faces in the back working hard, young ppl working out front being in training. Great vibe in the morning. Bagel made in house, has a good chew, no skimping on the greens. Chili crisp is on the spicy side but flavorful and umami. Cappuccino was more like diner coffee, but they didn't sell themselves as a coffee spot so within expectation.neighborhood felt safe in the morning, and chill.

***LATKE-SMASH HASH

I have ordered from them multiple times and they have always been great. But I always got the same thing, the crunch bagel (SO GOOD). Today I went and got the Latke Hash- DELICIOUS! So yummy. Also the staff is so friendly, accommodating and prompt. I brought my husband the Burrito to go and he loved it as well.

Stopped by for a quick breakfast and ordered a classic smoked salmon bagel sandwich (closed) on an everything bagel with an over-medium egg on top. The egg rang up as over-easy, but the cashier assured me it was just because they didn't have a button for over-medium. My eyes watered a bit at the $4.50 price tag for a single egg, but it turns out that was actually for a side-order of two eggs. Made the price more reasonable, but it wasn't what I ordered. I'll chalk that up to a miscommunication. Unfortunately the eggs were, in fact, over-easy. The bagel itself was sadly just not my jam. Super thick crust (almost bark-like) that was difficult to bite through, not much fluff inside, and an unpleasant bitterness from being over-toasted. Either their toasters lack a bagel setting to not burn the toppings, or their cooks don't know how to use it. I'll come back to try the pastrami sometime and enjoy the outdoor seating, but I'll stick to Boichik for my lox fix.

Ashley C.

I got a chicken schnitzel sandwich which was delicious, but was so expensive for what it was. It was around the size of a burger, for about $17. This is a big price to pay where I've gone to other Jewish delis and a sandwich was easily able to feed me for 2 meals. Good food, but too expensive to keep going back to.

Best bagel shop in Oakland. Hands down. Clean place, enough seating for small groups. Food is delicious.

The basic bagel was SO GOOD. It genuinely might be one of the best bagels I've had. I loved the scallion cream cheese, and the tomato was super fresh and juicy without making the bagel soggy. The tomato and cream cheese also helped balance out the stronger flavor of the raw red onion. I'd definitely recommend this one if you're here! The honey truffle bagel had a really interesting sweet and salty combination. I loved the richness of the honey, while the earthy truffle flavor paired really nicely with it. The truffle cream cheese was a little too salty for my taste though. The shop itself is small and cozy, with limited indoor seating and an outdoor patio. They also have plain bagels, coffee, tea, and other options. Weekend lines can get a little long, but the wait is usually pretty reasonable. There's also plaza parking available across the street. Overall, I really enjoyed both bagels and would definitely come back for the basic bagel sando!

Modern bagel shop with delicious bagels on offer…read more The bagels here have the familiar features of some east coast ancestors. We ordered a half dozen plain bagels and cream cheese. The crust makes a noticeable crunch when you bite through and the taste of pretzels comes through clearly. (The shop must add a liberal splash of lye to the water bath.) The dough inside has a salty flavor which can be too much on its own -- but as a result it complements the slightly muted cream cheese to make a tasty pair. The one issue for the bagels is their structure. The crumb loses its shape under any tearing or bending, which makes it hard to support a sandwich. We also noticed that the cream cheese had a slightly grainy texture. All told these are great bagels. Pair them with a cream cheese you like and rip in.

Owner Hatice Yildiz was delighted that (although my Türkçe was quite broken) a citizen from this country could speak her native tongue. She was thoughtful about taking a few minutes to indulge me so I could practice. So touched! Aside: It has been my experience those of the Türkish persuasion are always delighted and generous with the complements (that I don't think I deserve) when a non-native tries to speak their language. I was a USAF military brat during the Cold War, I was privileged to live in Izmir, Türkiye for three years as a child. Ja, we had a daily Türkish language and history class at my grade school. I did not arrive at the best hour, because it was quite busy. HOWEVER, I will say, considering how busy it was, not only was my order was prepared in a reasonable amount of time, the customer service was spot on. As someone who has worked in the front/back of the house at restaurants, Hatice has a well-oiled machine! Next to Lamb Börek, Spinach Börek and Sütlaç (Rice Pudding), Lahmacun (super thin crust Turkish Pizza) is one of my all time favorite Türkish street food. Simurgh's use recipe uses beef, but I prefer lamb--understandably the latter is more expensive. The bread thickness was on point, but I would have preferred it not have baked so long and softer for the roll-up. However, it takes a deft hand to get this pastry to the right thickness and texture. I would have liked A LOT more garlic, onion, coriander, cumin, parsley and red pepper paste spiciness in the beef. But the pickled red onion with Sumac was a really nice touch, and the micro-greens were super fresh. The traditional finishing touch lemon wedges were on the side. When I have traveled back to Türkiye, I have visited The Tatlises store chain for my Lahmacun 'feast'. Last time I had Tatlises Lahmacun was in Antalya in 2003; it was prepared more spicy with lamb, and is served with fresh cilantro/coriander, mint, salata (salad), thinly slice raw onion and a fresh lemon wedge to finish. I will be back to issue the Börek and Sultaç a lap.

I also like that this location has longer business hours than most GF bakeries and serves breakfast all day as well as lunch items. Another big plus is the allergens are clearly labeled online and in the shop. However, I've had negative experiences here on 3 consecutive visits. I go here for my gluten free partner. On one of the visits, I ordered a stuffed bagel and waited for 15 minutes before going back up to the counter to say that I still hadn't received my order. It was busy, but by this time, the person standing at the counter had nothing to do. They apologized and made my order then, but the experience left a bad impression on me since it was my first time eating inside the bakery. On my next visit, I ordered several items inside the bakery to take home with my pickup order and received a pain de chocolate instead of a cinnamon donut, which I didn't notice until I got home. The pain de chocolate costs more and my partner wasn't able to share it with me due to a soy allergy. I suppose I could've been paying more attention, but these items don't have similar names at all, so I was not expecting this error. That said, I made a mental note to pay more attention when ordering inside the bake shop for future orders. On my next visit, I ordered a mocha cupcake and berry muffin, but the cashier rang me up for a hand pie instead of a muffin. Again, the hand pie was more expensive. This time I caught it and asked for it to be corrected. I work in customer service and I act with kindness when mistakes are made because we're only human. However, I believe 3 negative experiences in a row shows a pattern and warrants some attention. I will continue to patronize this business due to the reasons I mentioned at the beginning of this review, but I will now have to be vigilant in ensuring that I receive the correct items and am charged the correct amount. This of course is not ideal. I hope service improves.

OK, OK, so I initially rated at 3 stars because of the prepared sandwiches I received, and the way…read morethey packaged my order, but after having the bagels I upped my rating to 5 stars because, well, they are fantastic. They are a little smaller than some of the other bagels in the area, but that isn't a problem for me. Why? Because they are so delicious. The exterior has some chew and is on the edge of crispy and the interior is dense with a good bite but not dry or hard. The combo of the exterior and the interior is better than any other bagel I've had in my 31 years of living in California. When my husband came home from work and had one of these bagels, he couldn't believe how good it was. This was yesterday, and we already put in an order for a dozen bagels, which we are hoping turns out to be a baker's dozen, to be picked up today. The exterior of these bagels, which are boiled, as any authentic bagel should be, is a little craggy, and the toppings are not afterthoughts, they are GOOD. I never liked everything bagels, but the everything bagels here made me a believer. The salt bagels are special, too. They are not loaded with salt on the exterior, but they seem to have little salty bits inside the bagel, or just inside the exterior. I'm not sure exactly how they do this, but there's a little salt in each bite, If I ever order from them again, in terms of delivery, I personally would not get the sandwiches that involve heat, because when they're wrapped, the texture of the bagel is altered. They more or less steam in their wrapping. And I'd probably not get delivery of cold sandwiches because the wrapping and the time it takes to deliver them result in changed bagel texture, too. They offer home delivery, and I'll take advantage of that, or just order and pick up, because that's just better for the business, financially, and it's easier on my wallet, too. They have some interesting spreads there, different from many of the other places, so I'll try a few of those, but I always have cream cheese at home, ditto lox, and all kinds of toppings, so most of the time I am going to just lay in a bunch of their bagels! Below is my first review. -------- I consider three stars average, and they are specifically for the sandwiches, the bacon, egg and cheese, and the lox and cream cheese. So I ordered both extra toasted, and neither had any crispiness when they arrived. Although the lox bagel was open face and had no heat to it, that sandwich, too, was on a bagel that seemed like it hadn't been toasted, that's how soft it was. I had to check to see that it was toasted at all, and I could see that it was. For the price, there was little lox on there, and it looks like more because they put the tomato slice under the lox and the sandwich was kind of wet, so the lox got washed out. The bacon, egg and cheese was good. The egg was well done, more like a patty instead of fluffy, but that was OK. I prefer the eggs being fluffy, but the whole sandwich was nice, the bacon was generous. I think it only had one egg, the cheese was good, and I got it with chili crisp cream cheese, which was interesting. I also got six bagels, which was $19, very steep, and the bagels are not huge. The thing that annoyed me was that the bag that came had the two sandwiches on the bottom, and the six bagels right on top of the two sandwiches, not in a separate bag, so when I tore open the top of the stapled bag, the bagels and all the toppings on the bagels went all over the place and made a mess. They should put these bagels in a separate bag for you. The bagels were for this evening, and I don't have another paper bag to put them in, and you don't want to put them in anything else. I think I'm going stick to just bagels from this place, and get the spreads on the side, if I get the spreads from them. They have whitefish salad and some interesting cream cheeses.

Less time in the oven would dial that back -- but it gives the bagel character so maybe you want to keep it! But that's the level we're on here. I'm giving subtle tasting notes in a Yelp review. I had strictly been planning my visit to California around the best places to eat around the city and this place is my greatest discovery. The sunshine bagel with the vegan cream cheese rocked my world beyond any description. The cucumbers were sliced so thinly and so crisp. It was a dream come true upon my taste buds. My friend who enjoys lox bagels from time to time said it was probably one of the top bagels she had ever eaten across the country. The atmosphere is very Californian and transplant friendly. The service was quick simple and the food was spectacular. Everybody in that place loved their bagels. It felt like a bagel dream come true! I mean the various cream cheese options to the delicious deliciously made fresh bagels daily. My only complaint is that there wasn't a public restroom.
