The best, if not one of the best bagels I've ever had in The Bay, and what might be basic breakfast ingredients turn out to be a perfectly made sandwich bagel. There was always talk about the Beauty's Bagel Shop from my local shul and well felt like I had to try a local bagel place. Bagels are life. Nice place, unique, and fresh. The exterior is nice going from the windows all the way to the kerb. You can smell the freshness of the bread rising and travelling around the place from time to time. Bagels are set in baskets behind the register which is helpful to know what is available. I was able to build my own bagel. Everything bagel, toasted. Regular cream cheese. Tomatoes, red onions, and capers were added. Capers were way too salty and a lot were given. One is given a number if the item is for here, time was a bit too much for a single bagel but on the bright side it was a good-tasting bagel, noting major but I did order my usual favourite with certain ingredients. Regularly one of my go to bagel shops. They make Montreal style bagels which are a little thinner than a New York style bagel. Bagels are excellent. I've also had the fried chicken sandwich which was excellent. The matzo ball soup was a little understated for my taste but was packed with chunks of chicken, noodles, and carrots. Latkes were perfectly round hash browns and were creamy like a fried mashed potato rather than a shredded potato. Different and delicious. Cute building with casual seating inside and out. Been here a few times, got the bagel open face sandwich each time, and have always been disappointed with the size, and portioning for how expensive it is. (Two open face bagels + avocado was $36 pre tip.) That being said it is unfortunately one of the better bagel options in the area. Levy's bagels in alameda has better portions for cheaper, but they're not open Tuesdays ‍. When prompted to tip for my carry out order, I left a custom tip of a few dollars. When the employee at the register saw that I didn't tip "enough," her professionalism immediately dissolved, she didn't say thanks, and she stopped being friendly. Unprofessional to try to guilt me because I?? Didn't give you enough free money for doing your?? Job??? I may be in the minority here, but the fact I tipped at all on a to-go order was generous imo. To blatantly disrespect the customer bc you think you're entitled to my money? That action right there shows me you don't deserve the tip. I won't be coming back anymore as the quality of the food was barely bringing me back, but to be treated so poorly in the face of a gift... wow. I ended up getting a sesame bagel with turkey, cheese and lettuce. I will have to say it was a bit dry and hard. It kept scraping my mouth becuse it was so hard. Stopped in on a Friday morning about 30 minutes after they opened. I've heard it's usually pretty busy, but there were only a few people in line ahead of us. Ordered the classic and a bacon egg and cheese sandwich, both came out super fast after ordering. I also recommend trying their house made hot sauce, it says it's hot but wasn't very spicy in my opinion, but definitely was tasty. There is no parking lot for this location and you do have to find street parking. At the time we went it was not difficult to find a spot on the street. With crisper cucumbers, this bagel experience could have reached greater heights. They also only had two options of bagel flavors to select from, onion and everything bagel. I normally would not go for either. My pick up order was easy to find on a to-go rack, labeled with my name. Food was where things went south. Drip coffee tasted harsh. I realize I'm spoiled cause I drink the finest coffees at home, but I expected better. Egg and cheese, on everything bagel, with tomatoes, capers and pickled onions, was clunky. The bagel itself was bready, soft, well seasoned, but lacking a crackling crust. It did not appear to have been toasted. Completely dry, not schmeared with anything, which is a major faux pas. In a classic bodega egg and cheese, the bagel is toasted, dripping with butter or a dab of mayo or aioli, so that the entire sandwich from bread to filling is hot and juicy. I also got a bialy. I'll start by saying the customer service was friendly and helpful! The ambiance was super cute and trendy. The food came out super quickly after ordering. However it was $40 for 2 bagels and 2 deviled eggs. So my expectations were already high based on this. However my salmon bagel was very bland, even with hot sauce. The bagel itself was thin and dry. My boyfriend got the egg bagel and added bacon which looked better than mine. We both agreed the deviled eggs were strange. They tasted like orange and hummus.. We had the biscuit sandwich which had brisket in it Winthrop a side of arugula and the smoked turkey bagel sandwich (with an onion bagel because that's all they had left). The smoked turkey bagel sandwich was refreshing and I got smashed avocados in it and it was barely there so I wouldn't recommend it. The brisket was delicious but it honestly lacked a little bit of flavor so the hot sauce at the table came in handy. First, I ordered the classic on an everything bagel. The classic is Salmon lox with capers and onions and of course the cream cheese. The amount of food was perfect and they do not skimp on the cream cheese. The favors were spectacular. Then I ordered the lemonade expecting it to be average. One of the few shops open at a seemingly early time of 8a, my squad and I had to grab something quick to head from Oakland back to LA - I love a good breakfast bagel sandwich and I had to give this sweet spot conveniently off the freeway a try. I had always heard of Beauty's, and was thrilled to see that they were in the neighborhood. We ordered the smoked trout salad on an Everything bagel and a breakfast sandwich on a plain bagel. They did not disappoint! The bagels had a nice chewy texture, and if you've never tried smoked trout before, run--don't walk. The garlic aioli they provide on the side as dipping sauce for the potatoes is amazing. Prices are a little steep ($30 for 2 people), but as to be expected with the price of food nowadays. There are certain things that go hand in hand, and the city of Oakland and Beauty's Bagel Shop is definitely one of them, as they have been serving up some of the best bagels and breakfast sandwiches since opening near the MacArthur BART Station in the city's Temescal neighborhood. Original owners Blake Joffe and Amy Remsen left their native Philadelphia for the streets of Oakland looking for a new life and the one thing they said that they missed most was those classic East Coast bagels from home, so they decided to open their own bagel shop taking over for a former Korean restaurant along Telegraph Avenue and bring old-school, traditional bagels to the Bay Area. It just sounds so simple! And for eleven years it apparently was that simple as Beauty's Bagel Shop has been a local staple with lines out the door of bagel lovers waiting for their signature Montreal-style bagels that are cooked in their wood-fired oven. Since 2020, they have merged their operations with San Francisco's own venerable bagel shop Wise Sons Delicatessen, as Beauty's owners are now responsible for creating a new recipe of bagels for all the Wise Sons locations. At this location of Beauty's, they have decided to keep their name, as their downtown location did take on the Wise Sons name, and perhaps most important of all they replaced the store's wood-fired oven for a convection oven so it can cook more bagels at a time. Getting to this location of Beauty's Bagel Shop is rather easy as it is a couple blocks north of the MacArthur BART Station and accessed by car by the West MacArthur Blvd exit off of Interstate 580 when headed east. Parking is the bigger challenge as it's mainly residential in the surrounding neighborhood. Luckily on the warm Saturday afternoon that I drove to their location to pick up a menu item for a weekend brunch, I managed to find residential parking along 38th Avenue. By the time I walked by there was still some considerable activity going on at least outside as many diners seemed to be enjoying their meals in the open bistro tables that they had set up, and there were some people still in line ready to order at their fast-casual counter area inside their shop. At Beauty's Bagel Shop, they still sell their bagels at Kettle Boiled Bagels as they are made with locally milled flour and a cold fermented dough. The menu features of course their signature bagels that they sell a la carte, per half dozen and dozen, plus they feature cream cheese, spreads and even veggies to add to your toasted bagel on their menu. They also serve full meals at Beauty's Bagel Shop with Omelets, Breakfast Sandwiches, Bagel Sandwiches, traditional Jewish cuisine such as Matzo Ball Soup and Latkes that they call Noshes on their menu, Sides and of course Sweets. Since I was here for the first time, I opted to go for one of their Signature Bagel Sandwiches, and since I have previously ordered and enjoyed their traditional Classic Bagel Sandwich with smoked salmon, I decided to slightly step out of my comfort zone and order their Smoked Trout Salad Sandwich, which was also served was leaf lettuce, red onion, and red radishes and with so many options of flavored bagels to choose from, I opted for their Onion Bagel. To add to my meal I opted to order one of their Chocolate Chip Cookies, which featured some of the largest chocolate chips that I have ever seen in a cookie. My final bill for two of their menu items was a little under $16 before tip, which wasn't too bad. It didn't take too long for my sandwich to be prepared and once I returned home I enjoyed but didn't necessarily love my Smoked Trout Salad because the bagel wasn't toasted enough or the way that their bagels are now created can't necessarily hold up the cold creaminess of their Trout Salad mixture. But that did taste good so I thought there was a lot of promise in the other dishes that Beauty's Bagel Shop has to offer as both their Fried Chicken and Pastrami Reuben Bagel Sandwich sound amazing, so I would definitely go back for those dishes and to try more of their pastries as both their babka and rugelach looked amazing from their case on their counter, and if they are good as their chocolate cookie then I'm sold. As for their signature bagels, there may be some issues that still need addressing as when they merged with Wise Sons they said they wanted their bagels to have a crispy crust on the outside and a chewy center, which would resemble the bagels that we've always wanted. I hope that still remains the case as despite the new ownership their mission remains the same: to bring the nostalgia and love behind our food to a new generation, and I still think they succeed doing that at Beauty's Bagel Shop in Oakland's Temescal neighborhood. read more

I really enjoy the slaw. If it weren't for the slaw, I don't think the bagel sandwich would have been as good as it was. The slaw added a nice sweetness and definitely helped with the lack of seasoning on the chicken. I still feel like it could have used a sauce of some sort, but adding the pickles on it helped the flavor out too. I don't know, it just... didn't really blow me away. It was average. On my last visit the breakfast sandwich with the added house-made sausage was delicious. Highly recommend the sausage they make in house. Also got 3 other bagels, 2 with scallion cream cheese and another with salmon cream cheese. They were out of the salmon cream cheese so added some slices of smoked salmon instead which I appreciated. We ate breakfast here twice in 3 days. Food was delicious, had Lox and cream cheese on a bialy- great flavor with capers and red onion. Also shared two of the egg sandwiches. Coffee was great (Stumptown). Not fancy, but you go for the food, don't you? read more

Just like many other restaurants, Beauty Bagels is a victim of the pandemic, but unlike some it survived by converting into a Wise Sons instead. I had not gotten to review the old Beauty Bagels previously, but that was one of my favorite places of all time - I ate there regularly - and indeed the old beauty bagels was my best bagel of the SF Bay Area, as it blew Boichik Bagels out of the water, so this review is a comparison to the old and the current Wise Son's rendition. I have already given this multiple attempts to see if Wise Sons can get their quality back up, but it is really no longer the same Beauty Bagels unfortunately. Bagel Quality - This is a huge loss. Gone is the springyness of the old formula - and the new bagel tastes similar to something you find in an average bagel shop - sorry Wise Sons, you should not have gotten rid of the Wood Fired oven. The insides are not just as chewy and springly, and just feels more like regular bread now, and feels more dense than before. As for the bagel seasoning, that also feels weaker. My favorite bagel used to be the Salt and Pepper, but every time I had it (over 4 different visits) it was sure consistently lacking. I barely tasted the pepper and salt popping out in the mouth, and i could have fallen for an almost plain bagel instead. Visually I do not see much pepper on it like it used to. Salt and Pepper bagel is something I would not even bother with anymore. Fried Chicken Bagel Sandwich - The coleslaw smothered in way too much sauce, and the color is completely more red then in the past. The fried chicken meat itself tastes a lot blander. There seems to be something lacking, maybe less seasoning or sauce or something, but it felt like bagel + chicken + coleslaw thrown together without any adhesion - kinda like an album with random songs listed together, but what is worse is that the songs are not even really hits. This item is the biggest disappointment from the old Beauty's Bagel - where I considered the old to be equal to Bakesale Betty's chicken. Mushroom Breakfast Sandiwch (+greens) - The egg did not have enough taste as it was moderately seasoned. Gone are the packed flavors of the egg, and now it just seemed really simple tasting. The spinach portion is also vastly reduced too. Overall it seems like its a little better than something a non-cook bachelor can make on a weekend. The color of the egg is just more pale yellow than the golden yellow color of the old item. Smoked Trout - This one had the same insides as what I remember before, and granted it doesn't require a lot of cook time I would expect there is not that much variation. But again the bagel itself is not anything special. But if I want a smoked Trout bagel, I might still come here. For a bagel sandwich experience (with emphasis on the sandwich itself) i would not come here again, I'll would just head to Saul's in Berkeley instead, which I had thought it has a taste way closer to the old Beauty's Bagel. For plain bagels I might still come here as its taste per cost is still better than Boichik. But really I never came out here before the pandemic for plain bagels anyways.
